The aftermath of the nonexistent wedding

As the untouched wedding cake and several presents sit forlornly on the kitchen table at Penrhewl, Eileen calls Sioned’s name,

Eileen looks at the photo

and looks at the photograph of the three of them.   “Sioned, where on earth are you now,” she worries, then puts down the photo, face down.

Guto is having Wi-Fi problems

At number 10, Guto is practising his Spanish, but is having trouble with the Wi-Fi;

His father's problem is a hangover

Gerwyn comes downstairs in a very fragile state, and is just sitting down when Guto shouts for Tesni.

"I need the Wi-Fi for this Spanish thing!"

“I need the Wi-Fi for this Spanish thing!” he yells, but she replies that she is not using it.   “You’re logged into something!” Guto protests,

"Keep it down, Guto"

and their father urges him to be quiet.

"Everyone always sides with 'poor Tesni'!"

“You always take her side – everybody always sides with ‘poor Tesni’!” Guto moans, as he packs the laptop into his bag, “There are too many people here anyway to have any peace!   Do you know what?   Stuff you!” and he storms out of the house.

"Please sort out the Wi-Fi, Dad"

Tesni comes clattering downstairs, exclaiming that she is not using the Wi-Fi, but is on 4G, and her father wonders what is the matter with Guto.   “Please sort out the Wi-Fi – it keeps dipping out,” she says,

He slowly rises from the chair

and Gerwyn gets out of the chair with difficulty, going in earch of painkillers.

Then Jaclyn comes in and glowers at him

Jaclyn comes in and glowers at him;

"I've been worried about you"

“Where have you been – I’ve been worried about you – shall I put the kettle on?” he says, and she thinks that is a good idea.

"They showed me no respect!"

In the shop flat, Ray tells Jason, “I had to ask them both to be quiet at one o’clock!   They showed no respect that I was trying to sleep.”

"That other idiot's still in bed!"

Mathew comes in, feeling the after-effects of last night, and Ray grouses, “I’m sure that other idiot’s still in bed – you won’t get much work out of Eifion today!

"I'll go and open up APD!"

“I’ll go and open up APD.”   Mathew says he will be there after a quick cup of tea.

"I know you're not flavour of the month . . ."

“I know you haven’t been flavour of the month since the day you were born, and you have to take it because he’s your Dad,

". . . but what Eifion done to upset him?"

“but what’s Eifion done to upset him?” asks Jason.

"Dad's just found out he likes men"

“Dad’s just found out that Eifion likes men,” is Mathew’s answer,

"Are you going to let him talk about Eifion like that?"

and Jason enquires if he is just going to let his father talk about Eifion like that, behind his back.

"You're the boss, Mathew!"

Nevertheless he acknowledges that Mathew is the boss.

"Have you seen Sioned?"

At the door of the shop, Eileen asks Ffion if she has seen Sioned, and Ffion can understand her concern;

"Remember, Sioned's tough"

“But remember, Sioned’s tough.”

"It's cold to be out here?

Then Ffion notices Guto, sitting with the laptop on the bench, which has now been moved into the alley, and thinks it is rather cold to be sitting out there.

"I can pick up the café's Wi-Fi from here"

He explains, “I can pick up the café’s wi-fi from here,”

"You shouldn't leave that there!"

but she suggests he does not leave

She points to the discarded dog-end

the remains of his smoking on full view in future.   “I thought you’d stopped, to concentrate on the Spanish,” and he says he cannot concentrate in that house.

"You have to promise to stop smoking"

“I’ve told you you can use the flat,” she sighs, “But you have to promise to stop smoking – I can’t have someone stinking of smoke in the flat!   Come on, then, I’ll take you over there quickly.”

Gerwyn haltingly tries to explain

Gerwyn is attempting to explain, “Honestly, I didn’t . . . I would never . . . she was drunk, upset over the wedding, she didn’t know what she was doing!”

"Everyone knows she wouldn't look twice at you!"

Jaclyn angrily replies, “Obviously – everybody knows she wouldn’t look twice at you!”

"You didn't snog Sioned, Dad?"

Tesni has evidently been listening and rushes downstairs, wanting her father’s assurance that he did not snog Sioned last night.

"Her tongue was halfway down his throat!"

“I didn’t snog anyone,” he begins, but Jaclyn reports that her tongue was halfway down his throat.

"She snogged me!"

He is quite adamant, “She snogged me!” and Tesni regards it as disgusting.   “I didn’t want to!” he continues, but Jaclyn did not see him complaining.

"You're worse than embarrassing, Dad!"

“You’re actually worse than embarrassing!” Tesni snarls at her father,

"People will stop talking about it before long"

but he predicts that people will stop talking about it before long;

"They haven't stopped talking about Mam and Garry!"

“Really?   People still haven’t stopped talking about Mam and Garry!” she points out, “I’m going out – I can’t stand the sight of you both!”

"Sort yourself out!"

Jaclyn abruptly tells him to sort himself out.

Mathew comes along the road

Mathew comes along the road and Eileen runs across to ask him if he knows where Sioned is.

"She just wanted to get drunk"

He imagines that she will have her head down a toilet somewhere;  “Things got a bit out of hand – she just wanted to get drunk.”

Sioned emerges from Hywel's house

At the other end of the street, the door of Hywel’s house opens and Sioned staggers out;

"I have no idea where she is, Eileen"

fortunately this is behind Eileen, and Mathew lies that he has no idea where she is, so Eileen goes back into the shop.

"We could start again in the Deri"

Rhys suggests that they could start again in the Deri, but Sioned could do with some sleep;  “Thanks for looking after me last night,” she says, and he replies that it was a pleasure,

"You haven't, Rhys?"

but is sorry about the love-bite on her neck.

Then Mathew approaches,

Sioned scurries away

and Sioned quickly walks away, rather shamefaced;  Mathew follows Rhys into the house,

"You took advantage of her!"

accusing him, “You took advantage of her – she was too drunk to think straight.”   Rhys enlightens him that Sioned knew exactly what she wanted.

“She was a mess – she was emotional!” Mathew goes on, but Rhys argues that people cope in different ways –

"Sioned happens to cope in a 'physical' way!"

“and Sioned happens to cope in a ‘physical’ way.

Seeing Mathew’s disgust at this, Rhys replies, “She’s single and I was happy to be a rebound – I had a laugh!”

"You make me sick!"

Mathew growls, “You make me sick!” but Rhys regards him as simply too nice.

"I'm going for a shower"

Sioned arrives back at the farm with a black sack containing her wedding dress;  “I’m going for a shower,” she says, and her mother wails that she has been worried sick.

"Rhys 'looked after' me"

“You didn’t need to worry, Mam – Rhys ‘looked after’ me.   I’ve got every right to do what I want.

"But Rhys has a girlfriend"

Eileen reminds her that Rhys has a girlfriend, but that makes no difference to Sioned;   “What about me, Mam?   Do you want to know why DJ didn’t want to marry me?

"He's gone to Ghana with Non!"

“Non – he’s gone to Ghana with Non!   So don’t stand there and try to make me feel . . .”   She hurries upstairs.

"Ten minutes at the most . . ."

In APD, Ray is in a particularly bad mood;  “Ten minutes at the most – that’s how long it takes to get a coffee from the café.   It’s such a waste of money, when there’s a kettle here.

". . . and he's been gone more than half an hour!"

“That Eifion – he’s been gone more than half an hour!   It make you wonder where he’s really gone.   If I was his boss . . .”

"I'm your boss while you're here"

Mathew points out that is not the case, so he should keep his opinions to himself;  “I’m your boss while you’re here – Dad, please, just leave it!   I’ve had enough of you just picking all the time!”

"Don't involve me in this"

Jason is very keen not to get involved in this argument, and Mathew goes on, “All I hear is a constant negative running commentary –

"I can't do anything right"

“I can’t do anything right.   I threw Izzy out because you didn’t like her, and now you know who the ‘real’ Eifion is, you’ve turned against him.”

"That kind of depravity doesn't run in our family!"

Ray answers, “As we’re talking so plainly, I’ll tell you that kind of depravity doesn’t run in our family!”   Mathew, on the other hand, maintains that it is natural, and if his father has a problem with it, he should pack his stuff and go home.   “Are you throwing me out?” Ray demands.

“No, Dad, I’m giving you a chance to change your ways!” Mathew roars,

"You've been poisoning his mind!"

and Ray accuses Jason of poisoning his mind.   “If you have a problem with me, that’s fine!” Mathew yells,

"Don't you dare bring my friends into this!"

“But don’t you dare bring my friends and colleagues into it!   Now go!”

But Ray will not give up so easily

When Ray continues to argue,

"Get out, now!"

he is again told, “Get out, now!”

"Thank you for supporting us, Mathew"

Jason is very impressed by Mathew’s support for him and Eifion;

"What shall I do next, boss?"

he salutes, “What do you want me to do next, boss?”

"Upper case X, lower case y . . ."

Ffion reads out the wireless password to Guto, “Xy368Pz,” and the laptop is connected;

"I'll pay for the Wi-Fi"

he says that he will pay for the Wi-Fi, but she will not hear of it, and he likes the taste of the coffee.

"Help yourself to as much as you want"

“Help yourself to as much as you want – and there’s plenty of food in the cupboard – make yourself at home,” Ffion tells him as she puts on her coat, “There’s no need to feel awkward – the fact that you’re safe and doing something constructive, instead of smoking, is enough for me.”

"Feel free to come and go as you please"

She leaves a key for him;  “Feel free to come and go as you please,”

"Make the most of the peace and quiet"

and advises him to make the most of the peace and quiet.

Gerwyn cannot face a sandwich

Gerwyn cannot even face a sandwich;  “And it’s not because of the hangover,” he tells Jaclyn, “Everything you said was true.”

"I shouldn't have said that"

She now regrets saying it and admits that she was ashamed she did, urging him to stop saying sorry.

“At least I know how you’ve been feeling these last few months – I know I can’t make things right,” she says,

"I hurt you in the worst possible way"

“I hurt you in the worst possible way, in front of everybody – I’m the one who’s sorry.”

"It was horrible, that snog!"

He complains, “It was horrible – no, not that – the snog!   Thank goodness I’ve had a tonsillectomy!

"Don't let me within 100 yards of that woman again!"

“Please don’t let me get within 100 yards of that woman again!”

Ray prepares to leave

Ray is furiously packing his bag in the shop flat when Mathew comes in;  “I never thought I’d hear my own son talk to me like some riff-raff!” he declares,

"Look, I'm sorry, Dad"

and Mathew says he is sorry.

He start to unpack again

Ray regards this as an apology and begins to unpack;  “I knew you’d come to your senses.”

"I stand by what I said"

Mathew is only apologising for hurting his feelings, but stands by what he said.

"I know how hard it was to raise me"

“I appreciate how hard it was to raise me by yourself, but part of the reason to come here was to stand on my own feet, to grow a backbone, and I’ve done that.   Please, listen to me – I’m going to make a lot of mistakes in my life, and I accept that, but at least they’ll be my mistakes.”

Ray emphasises that he has made more than his fair share, which Mathew acknowledges;

"I've never heard you admit you've made a mistake"

“But I’ve never heard you admit that you’ve made a mistake, let alone say sorry.”

"Coming here was a mistake"

Ray snarls, “Well, here’s one for you – I’m sorry I came here in the first place – I’ve had one disappointment after another since arriving.”   Mathew stresses that he does not want to be the person his father wanted to be,

"If you're ashamed of that, you'd better go"

and if he is ashamed of that, he had better go.   Picking up his bag,

"I'll be out of here before the sun sets!"

Ray informs him, “I’ll be out of here before the sun sets.”

Sioned is asleep . . .

Sioned is catching up with some sleep on the sofa at Penrhewl;

. . . and Eileen brings her a drink

her mother has made her a drink, predicting that the vitamins will make her feel stronger.

"What am I going to do, Mam?"

“What am I going to do, Mam?” Sioned whines, “I knew exactly where my life was heading this time yesterday.   Get married, run a successful farm, raise a family.

"Now I've lost everything"

And now I’ve lost everything – I’ve lost my best friend – he just made me feel . . . I don’t know – I felt there was a point to life, a purpose, that I belonged to something.”

"I can understand how you feel"

Eileen can understand how she feels,

"I know I've always gone for the bad boys . . ."

and Sioned continues, “I know I have always gone for the bad boys, but I was certain things were going to be different with DJ.

". . . I never thought DJ would break my heart"

“I never thought he’d break my heart.   Please don’t say that there are better days ahead.”

"You won't find it in a man's bed . . ."

Her mother maintains that she will feel better, some day;  “But you won’t find it in a mans bed –

". . . especially one who eats you alive!"

“especially one who eats you alive!”

"I promise to get someone to fix it"

When Guto returns home, Gerwyn apologises about the Wi-Fi earlier;  “I promised to get someone to fix it as as soon as possible,” he says,

"There's no rush, Dad"

but Guto is now of the opinion that there is no rush, and has brought his parents a present.

This puzzles Gerwyn

They are unsure what has caused this sudden change of attitude.

Tesni comes in through the back door

Then Tesni comes in through the back door, commenting that they have not divorced yet;

"It will take more than Sioned Rees and Garry Monk"

“It will take more than Sioned Rees and Garry Monk to split us up,” her father explains, as he watches television,

"I should treat you to  five star hotel"

and remarks that the hotel there looks nice.   “I think I should treat you to a night in a five-star hotel.”

Jaclyn will not argue with that"

Jaclyn will not refuse that, and Tesni proposes to have a party while they are away.   She immediately leaves again, maintaining that she has work to do, “Organising a party!”

"She's only pulling your leg, Ger!"

Jaclyn explains that she is pulling his leg,

"I'm just happy we understand each other"

but Gerwyn is just happy that they understand each other now.

Ray will soon be gone

As Tesni comes out of the house, she sees Ray packing his belongings into the taxi;  “Have you offended him again?” she asks Mathew,

"I don't know if he'll ever be back"

who does not know if he will ever come back.   He asks how things are at home

"I think Sioned did them a favour"

and she replies, “I think Sioned did them a favour, in a weird kind of way.”

"Did you hear where Sioned slept last night?"

“Did you hear where Sioned slept last night?” he enquires, as he sees Rhys come out of the chip shop, “Some people have no shame!”   Tesni tells him not to start rumours, but he points out he was told by Rhys himself;  “And he doesn’t care either!”

"Luned – that pig of a boyfriend of yours . . ."

He goes into the shop and Tesni immediately takes out her phone;  “Luned, I’ve got some news for you – about that pig of a boyfriend of yours.”
