3 March 2021

Gaynor is very distressed

Gaynor is sitting disconsolately at home with a cup of coffee;

She has a WhatsApp audio message

a message alert appears on her phone to indicate that there is an audio clip via WhatsApp from Angharad.

She listens to the message . . .

“Do you miss Sheryl?” Angharad is asking Hywel and he replies that he is;  he thinks about her almost every day.   She was a very special woman, and they had a strong bond.   “She and Gaynor sound very different,” says Angharad.

. . . with increasing concern

“They are – Gaynor is solid and reliable, like an old bike,” Hywel’s voice can be heard, although we know this message was spliced together from two conversations.   Gaynor is very upset.

Eifion is on his tea break

Eifion is having a cup of tea outside the back of the salon when Izzy appears, asking where Jason is.   She is told that he has gone to get some more guttering.

"Jason's taken over as manager, then?"

“He’s taken over as manager, then?” she assumes, and Eifion did not anticipating he would like working with Jason, but thinks he is great.

"He knows what he's doing – unlike Mathew!"

“He knows what he is doing, unlike Mathew!” he sneers, and she insists that he should be encouraging Mathew to come back.   “He said he prefers working from home, rather than APD.

"All he's doing is switching TV channels"

“All the work he’s doing is switching TV channels!” she growls, “I don’t think he goes to APD more than an hour a day.”   Eifion looks upon that as one of the perks of being the boss.   “I’m really worried about him – haven’t you noticed how low he is?”

Eifion hardly ever sees him

Eifion says that when he leaves in the morning, Mathew is not up, and when he returns Mathew is already in bed;  “It’s like he has given up!” whines Izzy, but Eifion looks disinterested.

“Well, you obviously think more of Sheryl than me!” rages Gaynor, after she has gone to see Hywel at his house.

"That's not true, Gaynor"

He argues that is not true and he does not know what she is on about, so she gets out her phone to play the recording.

She cannot find the message now

“She recorded you and sent it to me,” she says, but then discovers that the recording has mysteriously disappeared.

"What – it's disappeared off your phone?"

He regards this with disbelief, to say the least, but she insists that she is not making it up;  “I heard you – you said that I’m reliable and solid, like an old bike.

"You compared me to an old bike!"

“You compared me to an old bike!”

"Perhaps she tampered with the recording"

He points out that she has misunderstood – either that or Angharad has tampered with the recording;

"Before you had the breakdown"

“She told me that they used to call you ‘the old bike’ in college, before you had the breakdown.”

"I never had a breakdown!"

Gaynor denies that she ever had a breakdown, and is adamant that she is not ashamed, but swears that Angharad is lying.

“Do you think I imagined all this?” she demands, and he recalls that she imagined a few things about him and Sheryl.

"I heard you saying nasty things about Sheryl"

He says that he heard Gaynor saying nasty things about her;  “Oh, don’t tell me – she recorded me as well?” Gaynor sighs, and laughs when Hywel says that it was by accident.

"You're a fool if you believe her!"

“Like she recorded you ‘by accident’ and edited what you said?” suggests Gaynor, “You’re a fool if you believe her!” and with that she marches out of the house.

"It won't be long until you're in a much smaller house"

In the Deri, Lisa finds Tesni, who says the house can be small when everyone is at home;  “It won’t be very long until you’re in a much smaller house, with a lot more people, paying an and arm and a leg for it,” warns Lisa,

"I've contacted a friend in London"

“That’s why I wanted to see you – I’ve contacted a friend of mine in London – she might be able to help you find somewhere to rent.”

Tesni regards that as really nice, but she is now not really sure that she wants to go;

"It's not the right time for me to go"

“I’ve been thinking about what you said, and it’s not the right time for me to go to London.   Don’t worry, I’m not staying because I’m hoping something will happen between us – I have other reasons, and I can’t run away from them.”

Lisa is pleased that they will have ‘Tasha’ for a while longer, and says that is a good thing for everyone.

Garry comes to the bar and asks Cassie to put a bottle of chablis in the fridge for him and also to keep a table free for him;

"A date, if that's not too old-fashioned"

“I’ve got a date, if that word is not too old-fashioned.”   She appreciates that men move on more quickly than women,

and wants to know who is the lucky woman,

Garry is not revealing anything

but he is saying nothing.

Then she suddenly realises that Jaclyn will be working the shift and advises him to go elsewhere;

"She'll be glad I've moved on"

“I’m sure she’ll be glad to see that I’ve moved on,” Garry tells he, with a smile.

"Whisky, at this time of day?"

Mathew is lounging on the sofa, watching the television, when Eifion comes in and notices the whisky bottle on the table;  “Whisky, at this time of day?” he comments,

and Mathew replies that he cannot stand the stuff.   He also wonders why Eifion is home at this time,

"Why is APD closed?"

and Eifion asks, “Why is APD closed?”   He receives the vague answer that Mathew will go in later, and enquires, “When – after Bargain Hunt, or after trying more whisky?”

"Just go away, Eifion!"

Mathew assumes that Izzy sent him, and simply wants him to go away;  “I’m not here to put pressure on you – I’m just worried,” Eifion says,

"We could do with your help"

“Everything’s fine at the salon, but we could do with your help.”

Mathew is convinced that they are quite happy without him;

"Dad always used to say I was in the way"

“Dad always used to say I was in the way – things are easier without me!   Jason could have died – and all because I didn’t charge my phone!”   Eifion assures him that Jason is fine – apart from the trouble with Sara.

"I think I'll go to bed"

Mathew decides to go to bed;

"Let's go out for some fresh air"

he takes no notice of Eifion’s entreaty to have a shower and then they can go out for some fresh air.

"What are you doing here?"

Gaynor returns home to Llwyncelyn, and is shocked, not to mention angry, to find Angharad sitting there.   “What are you doing here?   Get out, now!” she shouts,

"Your mother's jewellery is over there"

but Angharad calmly points out that her mother’s jewellery is on the table.

"The inscription is there!"

When Gaynor looks, the inscription is there, and she is amazed.

"I had copies made – it was worth it!"

“They’re not the same ones – I had copies made,” is Angharad’s reply, “It was worth it.”   Instead of leaving the house, as instructed, she enquires about Hywel’s whereabouts, and hopes that the message did not upset Gaynor too much this morning.

"How does it feel?   Losing everything?"

“He’s left you, hasn’t he?   How does it feel?   Losing everything?” Angharad taunts,

"Go, or I shall call the police!"

and Gaynor threatens to call the police.

"We've had this chat about the police"

“We’ve had this chat about the police,” she is reminded.

“Yes, but as you know, I’ve got nothing else to lose!” rages Gaynor;

"There's still your freedom, Gaynor"

it is pointed out to her that there is still her freedom.

"This is where your things are . . ."

Angharad has one parting gift for her, placing a sheet of paper on the table;  “An address – this is where the family photos and some of your personal stuff are –

". . . if you want them"

if you want them.”

Gaynor is surprised

As soon as she has left the house, Gaynor picks up the paper and is surprised by what she reads

Garry's date surprises Cassie . . .

Cassie is surprised when she sees who is Garry’s date;

 . . . it is none other than Lisa

Lisa walks in and greets him.   He asks Cassie for the bottle of chablis,

"We're lucky to have Jaclyn"

and makes sure that Jaclyn is aware of what he is doing;  “Jaclyn’s such a good chef – we’re lucky to have her.

"Remind me, what are the specials today?"

Remind me, what are the specials today?”

Jaclyn reels off the list

Jaclyn quickly reels it off, “Lamb with spinach, roasted butternut squash, halloumi salad with pomegranate, carrots and harissa dressing – everything else is on the menu.”   Garry enquires if the lamb is local,

"As you know, all the meat is local!"

and is informed, “As you know, all the meat is local.”

"You really like her, don't you?"

Lisa remarks, “You really like her, don’t you?   It’s obvious what you’re trying to do.”

"I'm not paying you for your opinion"

He snaps that is not paying her for her opinion, and it appears that Jaclyn as also aware what is going on.

Hywel gets out of his car

Hywel’s car arrives in the high street and he asks Izzy if she has spoken to her mother;  “Not since that awkward conversation,” she replies, and can see that something has happened.

"She said she got a message from Angharad"

Hywel admits they have quarrelled again;  “She said she got a message from Angharad where I said nasty things –

"I'm sure Angharad tampered with it"

“I’m sure that Angharad tampered with it, if there even was a recording.”

"Could be one of those self-destructing messages"

Izzy says that it could have been a voice message that self-destructs, which she uses, so that if she says something stupid, there is no evidence.

"Will you phone her, Izzy?"

“Will you phone her?   She won’t answer my calls,” Hywel asks, and she does so.

"Mam, where are you?"

She asks her mother where is she is, and urges her not to trust Angharad, instructing her mother to come home now.   Then the signal disappears, and they are both very worried.

Izzy finds her mother's location

“Angharad told her where her stuff is, and she’s there now,” says Izzy, who then consults ‘Find My Friends’;  “Yes, I have her last known location.”

"Right, get into the car"

She and Hywel hurriedly get into the car.

"What has Jaclyn got that Dan didn't?"

As Jaclyn is by the bar, Lisa asks, “What has Jaclyn got that Dani didn’t?

"Everyone thought you were perfect for each other

“Everybody was shocked, thinking that you were perfect for each other.”

"Do you believe there's only one perfect person?"

Garry wants to know if she believes there is only one perfect person out there for us;  she says he is asking the wrong person.

Their stage-managed jollity does not impress Jaclyn

“Laugh as if I’ve said something funny,” he suddenly instructs her, and they both burst into peals of laughter.   She tells him that is hilarious, and she had no idea he was so funny.   Jaclyn walks away from the bar with a look of disgust.

Gaynor arrives in the snowy woodland . . .

Gaynor’s car arrives in some woodland, where there is snow on the ground;

. . . and looks around her

she gets out and looks around, catches sight of Angharad

She goes in pursuit of Angharad . . .

and follows her.   As Gaynor approaches a wooden footbridge,

. . . finding some of her tattered clothes

she is astonished to see some of her clothing, which has been ripped to shreds, hanging from trees.

She is bemused

She cannot understand what has been going on.

There are photos attached to the trees . . .

A few steps further on,

. . . which puzzle her

she finds various family photos pinned on the trees

It is as if she is in a fantasy world

and she looks in disbelief at the surreal surroundings.

She continues through the wood . . .

As she continues through the woods, passing various tattered clothing and shouting Angharad’s name,

. .  and finds charred photographs . . .

she finds the remains of a fire, containing the charred remains of photographs.

. . . then sees a reflection of Angharad

She looks up and catches sight of Angharad’s reflection in a pool of water as she is led on.

"Very generous, Garry"

Back at number 7, Lisa thinks that Garry has been very generous with his payment, and he believes that he has had his money’s worth.

"You've paid for the 'full service'!"

“Not really – you’ve paid for the ‘full service’!” she points out, “If you want it!”

"I'm not a man who needs to pay for it!"

He tells her not to take this the wrong way;  “I’m not a man who needs to pay for it,” and then there is a knock at the door,

Lisa slips out the back way

so Lisa proposes go out of the back door, in case whoever it is gets the wrong impression of him.

"Is your date still here?"

As expected, the visitor is Jaclyn, and Garry invites her in;  she asks if his date is still there.   “She might be upstairs, waiting for me,” he answers.

"I can't play these games any longer"

Jaclyn cannot play these games any longer;  “I’m not sleeping – Ger is low, I don’t know what’s going on with Guto – and Tesni is leaving home.

"I have nothing else to give"

“Everywhere I turn, people depend on me and I have nothing left to give.

"If your objective is to get me to hate you . . ."

“If your objective is to get me to hate you, you’re succeeding.”   She turns and leaves the house;

Could Garry be feeling some sympathy for her

Garry appears to have had an effect on Garry.

She arrives home and is going for a shower

When Jaclyn has crossed the road back to number 10, she is greeted by Tesni;  “I’m going for a shower,” says Jaclyn, and her daughter offers to make something to eat, but she would just appreciate a cup of tea.

"I'm not going to London, Mam"

“I’ve got some news,” begins Tesni, “I’m not going to London – it’s expensive and the time isn’t right.”

This is very cheering news for her mother

This is the best news that her mother has ever had, and she feels much better now.

Gaynor walks even further . . .

Back in the woods, Gaynor continues walking and then comes upon and even stranger sight;

. . . and finds a bizarre scene

some of her furniture is arranged in a clearing.

She looks round in disbelief

She looks around incredulously, then hears Angharad’s voice;

"Why have you brought me here?"

“Why have you brought me here?” Gaynor demands,

"So you can get your stuff back"

and is told that she can get her stuff back.

“You’ve destroyed my stuff – like you’ve destroyed everything else in my life!” Gaynor shouts,

"What have I done to deserve this?"

“What have I done to deserve this?”

"Because of what you did to me in college!"

“I thought a clever woman like you would have worked things out – because of what you did to me in college!” Angharad exclaims, but Gaynor protest that she did nothing,

"I don't even remember you at college!"

and does not even remember her at college.

"It wasn't enough to steal Colin from me!

“You must have been so jealous of me – it wasn’t enough to steal Colin from me, you had to go for him as well –

"Everyone saw you throw yourself at him!"

“everyone saw you thrown yourself at him after every lecture!   Who would have thought there was so many questions about cynghaneddu?”  [harmony]

"You means Deiniol Richards?"

Gaynor realises that she is referring to Deiniol Richards, and Angharad continues her fantasising,

"You ruined everything!"

“We had something so special – and you ruined everything!”   Gaynor is adamant that she had no interest whatsoever in Deiniol Richards, but this does not stop the ranting;  “Do you have any idea of what happened after you reported us?”

"I had no idea who you were!"

Gaynor had no idea who she was, let alone that she was seeing the lecturer.   Angharad is under the impression that the two of them always had chats, but Gaynor screams, “We didn’t – it’s all in your head!”

"I was kicked out of college because of you!"

Angharad is losing her temper and shouts to Gaynor to shut up;  “Aways talking – going on and on – and thinking everything you say is so important!   I was kicked out of college because of you!

"Everyone turned their backs on me because of you!"

“Everyone turned their backs on me because of you!   Family, friends – and the only thing that kept me going was knowing that

"One day I would take everything away from you!"

“one day I would take everything from you, too!   Your home, the people you love!”

"You reported Izzy!"

Gaynor realises that it was her who reported Izzy, and is told, “You made it so easy for me –

"I never thought you'd believe that about your own daughter!"

“mind you, I never thought you’d believe that about your own daughter!”

"It was so easy to get Hywel on side!"

Gaynor is horrified by the mad woman before her, as the ranting continues, “It was so easy to get Hywel on my side!”   Then there is the sound of Izzy’s voice calling for her mother,

Angharad 'does a runner' . . .

and Angharad runs away, with Gaynor chasing after her.

. . . but ends up motionless on the ground . . .

Angharad trips and falls to the ground;  Gaynor, with hatred in her eyes, approaches her, motionless on the ground,

. . . with blood seeping from her head

with blood coming from her head.

A convenient, weighty rock is picked up

The voices of Hywel and Izzy are growing closer as Gaynor reaches down to pick up a rock lying nearby.

Gaynor looks at it, then . . .

She looks at it, summoning up the courage,

. . . prepares to unleash her fury

and raises it above her head, with the intention of bringing it crashing down on Angharad’s skull.

"Don't, Mam!   You'll lose everything!"

At that auspicious moment Izzy appears and shouts to her mother, “Don’t!   You’ll lose everything!”

"I've already lost everything!"

Gaynor responds that she has already lost everything,

The rock is thrown to the ground

and in her fury hurls the rock to the ground, sparing her tormentor.

Gaynor's stare of unmitigated hatred

She stares down at the inert figure with a look of unmitigated hatred.
