27 September 2023

Colin surveys the scene . . .

Colin comes into the house and is very surprised to see the state of disarray;

. . . and goes in search of Britt

“What the hell?” he exclaims and then shouts very loudly for Britt.   He rushes upstairs to see if she is there, still shouting.

"What you need is a full breakfast"

Delyth and Maya walk into the deli and Delyth suggests that what Maya needs is a full breakfast;  “That always sorts me out on a hangover.”

"I didn't sleep well, that's all"

Maya simply says that she did not sleep well and that is all.

"It's no-one important"

A message arrives on Delyth’s phone, which she says is no-one important.

"You've been up to something since last night"

Maya realises that she has been up to something since last night, but is not given any details.   Delyth has to make a phone call and goes outside to do so, instructing Maya to order full breakfasts and a glass of wine.

Jason looks at his phone

Jason is looking with concern at his phone when Kelly comes downstairs;  “I though you had gone to work,” she says,

"You said you were leaving twenty minutes ago"

“You said you were leaving twenty minutes ago.”   His excuse is that he had to send a few work messages, which he has now done;

"See you later, Kelly"

he will see her later.

She suspects something is going on

She is still looking concerned.

Breakfast has arrived

Delyth returns to the deli, where the two plates of food are on the table, looking very pleased with herself;

"Everything is sorted"

she announces that everything is sorted.

"What are you talking about?"

Maya wants to know what she is talking about.

"I've just spoken to Douglas, the lovely locum"

“Well, I didn’t want to say anything, but now it’s confirmed – I’ve just spoken to Douglas, the lovely locum I helped to lock up yesterday, and he said he’ll look after the pharmacy for you.”

"Why?"

Maya wonders why this is necessary.

"You and I are going away"

“You and I are going ‘bant[away]” Delyth continues, and she is asked for more information, as there are not supposed to be any secrets between them.   “It’s not a secret – more like a surprise.”

"I don't like surprises, D!"

Maya is adamant that she does not like surprises, but is told that is tough and that she will find out when they get there tomorrow.

“Because last night you were yourself again  you were having fun using Welsh without thinking about it, because Gaynor made it ‘sbort[fun] and I realised that I haven’t been very supportive of you – at least, not in the right way – and I want to make it up to you.”

Meanwhile, their breakfast is getting cold, but still Maya is demanding where this holiday is;

"Mind your own business"

she is told to mind her own business.

"The place is fine as it is"

Colin is looking with incredulity at a roll of rather opulent wallpaper and pointing out to Britt, “The place is fine as it is!”   She agrees that may be true for the two of them, but if they are going to foster, there are loads of things they need to think about.

"Exactly – not jumping in full pelt!"

“Exactly – not jumping in with gallons of paste and paint and decorating full pelt!” he snarls.

"I didn't spend a fortune, Col"

She protests that she only bought some things from APD that were on sale and did not spend a fortune.

"That's all for now"

Then Jason walks in with more rolls of paper;  “That’s all for now – it looks as if you’re tackling a huge DIY project.   I’ve put in an order for the rest of the stuff.”

"There's more?"

Colin is infuriated that there is still more to come and Britt insists that she has not spent too much.   Jason confirms that as they are doing the whole place, the price is not too bad.   “What?” Colin shouts.

Britt explains, “Just the places people see – like the living room, the kitchen, the bathroom, the spare room,”

"You are doing the whole house!"

and he realises that it is indeed the whole house.

"Whoa, slow down, Britt!"

Jason leaves the house and Colin warns Britt, “Whoa, slow down, Britt!   Have you even asked Hywel Llywelyn for permission?   He owns the place.”   She replies that she has not done so yet.

"There are so many things you haven't thought about!"

“There are so many things you haven’t even thought about!”

“Don’t you make out that I don’t know how much work is ahead of us – I’ve read about every step until my eyes are crossed.   There are so many things we have to sort out – it’s going to be hard for us as it is –

"We've both got a criminal record, right?"

“we’ve both got a criminal record, right?   So everything else needs to be perfect – so what do you say?

"Are you going to help me, or what?"

“Are you going to help me or what?”

Looks like Colin will have to agree

He is afraid  he will have to do what she says.

Jason is still studying his phone . . .

walks along the street towards APD, still looking at his phone,

. . . an gets an unpleasant shock

and discovers that Howard is waiting for him outside.

"What are you doing here?"

“What are you doing here again?” Jason rages, “You’ll have to leave.”

"We have business to deal with"

Howard is still insisting that they have business to deal with,

"I don't want people seeing us together"

but Jason is equally determined, “I’m sorry, but I don’t want people seeing us together.”

“You’d better let me in, then,” Howard suggests.

They start furniture-moving

Britt and Colin are moving the shelving from under the stairs, while he makes it perfectly clear that he is not happy about this.

"You'll be glad when we're top of the fostering list"

“No, but you’ll be glad when this place is a palace – and we’re top of the fostering list,” she replies.

They move the heavy item again

"Look how dirty it is behind here"

and Britt can see how dirty it is behind where it was standing,

"That's not too bad"

but Colin does not consider that to be very bad.   “We won’t be allowed to foster if there’s dust everywhere,” she insists, “We’ll have to clean before we do anything else.”

She hurries to get the vacuum cleaner

As she gets the vacuum cleaner, Colin cries out in pain as  he has injured his wrist while trying to move the piece of furniture.

"Argh – I think I've pulled something!"

“I think I’ve pulled something in my wrist.”

"I want that payment, Howard!"

In what Jason believes to be a secluded corner of APD, he reiterates his demand for payment of the bill.

"You said you'd take other forms of payment"

Howard reminds him that he said he would take other forms of payment and again says, “You want revenge on Jinx and I need to pay my debt.   It makes sense and you know that.”

Who is that in the background, listening?

What neither of them realise is that Kelly has come into the shop and is listening to their conversation

"I can't do this now – you have to go!"

as Jason replies, “I can’t do this now – I’ll be in touch – I’ll phone or text you, but you have to go now!”

The shadowy figure slips away

As Jason turns to go back inside, Kelly slips quietly away.

Colin seeks medical assistance

Groaning with pain, Colin enters the pharmacy

"Let me take a look, Colin"

and Maya wonders what has happened;  “Britt wants me to decorate and shift things,” he tells her.

When she wants to take a look, he removes the packet of frozen peas

Whoops – frozen peas all over the floor"

and unfortunately drops some of them on the floor.

"Can you move your fingers?"

“Can you move your fingers?” she asks and he does so with difficulty, then moves his wrist in circles.

"Probably just a sprain"

She diagnoses that it is probably just a sprain, for which she can give him anti-inflammatories and a ‘Tubigrip’ to give it some support.

"No more DIY for the foreseeable"

“But you’re going to have to tell Britt there’s no more DIY for the foreseeable,” she instructs him,

He welcomes that news

which he regards as quite a relief.

"Why don't I make use a cup of tea?"

“Tell you what – why don’t I make us a cup of tea and you can tell me all about it, while I show you how to wear this,” she proposes, adding, as she points at the floor,

He has some clearing up to do

“And then I’ll make you clean them up as well!”

"Who else were you expecting?"

Jason arrives home at Bryntirion and calls for Kelly;  “Who else were you expecting?” she demands.   He says that sometimes it feels like a dozen people live there

"I wanted us to have a bit of alone time"

and she advises, “Dai’s taken Ifan to the cinema – I wanted us to have a bit of alone time.”

"Do you have another romantic afternoon planned?"

“Do you have another romantic afternoon planned?” he smiles,

"More like an afternoon of explaining"

but she was thinking more of an afternoon of explaining, actually.

"A heated discussion with Howard"

She sits down the sofa and tells him, “I heard you, having – what would you call it?   A heated discussion with Howard –

"What's going on, Jase?"

“what’s going on?”

Jason is temporarily speechless

Jason is lost for words.

Colin explains the background

Colin explains to Maya, “I’m worried that Britt’s rushing – it’s only a few years ago since I lost my daughter, Izzy.   You would have loved her – and Aaron, Britt’s youngest, he only left home a while ago, so are we just trying to fill a gap – ‘bwlch’?”

"Is that a bad thing?"

“So what if you are?” is Maya’s reply, “If you can offer a child a loving home and it gives Britt fulfilment at the same time, is that a bad thing?”

"We need to do it right"

Colin stresses that it is not something to take lightly;  he is happy to foster, but, if they are going to do it, they need to do it right.   “I’m just worried that Britt is going at it ‘can’ milltir yr awr’ – a hundred miles an hour.”

"Delyth gets things into her head"

Maya can understand that;  “Delyth gets things into her head and puts her foot on the pedal – it’s all sorted before I can get a look in.   I get frustrated – but then,

"If they mean well, is it a bad thing?"

“if they mean well, is it such a bad thing?”

"Well, speak of the devil"

Just then Delyth comes in through the door;  “Speak of the devil,” says Colin,

"I'm fine, now Maya's sorted it"

“I’m fine, now Maya’s sorted it.”   She reminds him to keep an eye on it and if there is any swelling or the pain gets worse over the next few days, he should go and see a doctor.

"You need to go and pack"

“Remember, you need to go and pack,” says Delyth, and Colin wonders if they are going anywhere exotic.   Delyth replies that everything has been organised and they have a timetable full of activities.

"What did I say – a hundred miles an hour!"

“What did I say earlier?   A hundred miles an hour!” comments Colin, as he leaves the pharmacy.

Britt finds a very old card from Chester . . .

Britt has discovered various items under the stairs, including a card from Chester;

. . . and immediately phones him

she immediately picks up her phone to talk to him.

"Hello, love – how are you?"

“Chester – hello, love – how are you?”

"Please tell me I've misunderstood"

At Bryntirion, Kelly says, “Please tell me I’ve misunderstood – because, do you know what?

"I don't know you at all, Jase"

“I don’t know you at all, if you’ve planned to do something to Jinx.”

"I haven't, Kelly"

Jason is adamant that he has not,

"What were you doing even associating with him?"

she continues, “What were you doing even associating with Howard, Jase?   You know what he did to me.”

Jason explains that he is a customer;  “He ordered materials from APD like any other customer – Mathew arranged this.”

"Oh, blame Mathew!"

“Oh, blame Mathew – but you’re the one arranging payment, mind!   Jason, I thought we were going to move on from everything!”

"That's what I thought"

Jason thought the same thing;

"Not if you're discussing revenge tactics with Howard!"

“Obviously not, if you’re discussing revenge tactics with Howard!” she shouts.

"He had the idea, because he's skint"

Jason replies,“Howard came up with the idea because he’s skint – I never asked him to . . .”

"Was he going to attack Jinx – or worse?"

“What was he going to do?   Attack Jinx?   Worse?”   Jason is adamant that he does not know, because, as he said, he did not go into any details with Howard.

"I didn't want him to do anything to Jinx"

He did not want him to do anything to Jinx.

“Did you consider it?” she enquires, and he remains silent.

"But did you consider it?"

“Did you consider letting Howard do something to Jinx?”

There is no reply

There is still no reply.

"I have to rest it a bit"

On arriving back at number 21, Colin tells Britt that his wrist is not too bad;  he just has to keep an eye on it and rest it for a bit.

"You haven't started the papering yet?"

“You haven’t started the papering yet, then?”

"I've been thinking about what you said"

She answers that there was too much cleaning to do first, “But I have been thinking about what you said earlier, Col, about slowing down.”

"I'm going to support you 100%"

He says he has also been thinking and he intends to support her 100%;  “A hundred miles an hour, as they say.”

"Perhaps we don't have to go quite so fast"

Britt concedes that perhaps he was right – they do not have to go quite so fast and change everything.

"I might take all this stuff back"

“To be honest with you, I might take all this stuff back,” and he wonders why the sudden change of heart.

She shows him the card from Chester

“I talked to Chester earlier, you know – look, I found this Mother’s Day card from him – it was so nice to hear his voice . . . and I realised I miss them – Chester, Catrin and Aaron.”

Colin is quite sure that they miss her as well, because she is a good mother;

"You'll be a good foster-mother, too"

“And you’ll be a good foster mother, too.   You don’t need to decorate top to bottom to prove that.

"Look, I'll use my one good hand . . ."

“Look, I’ll use my one good hand – this one here – to help you give this place a good spring clean.

". . . so we can start the process as soon as possible"

“So we can start the process as soon as possible.

Britt still has reservations

Britt still appears to have something on her mind.

Sun Cream

Now Delyth is deploying the cards bearing Welsh words;  it transpires that ‘Eli Haul’ is sun cream

"Do I want some of that tomorrow?"

and Maya demands whether she will be wanting some of that tomorrow.

“Listen, Delyth, I really appreciate what you’re trying to do – lifting me up – giving me treats when I’ve been so stressed,

"When you arrange everything without any discussion"

“but I don’t enjoy it when you arrange everything without any discussion.”

"It's a surprise"

Delyth again repeats that it is a surprise.

“I know – and I love you for it – but it’s making me anxious.   I want to look forward to our holiday – not worry about what you’ve got up your sleeve.

"I'm not looking forward to it"

“I’m worried – I’m not looking forward to it.”

Village

Delyth is persuaded and finds the card with the word ‘Pentref[village]

Beach

followed by ‘Lan y Mor[beach].

"Yeah – I love the beach"

Maya loves the beach,

Learning Welsh

then it is ‘Dysgu Cymraeg’ which she already knows means ‘Learning Welsh’.

“That’s the holiday,” Delyth explains, “We’re going to a village by the sea so that you can learn Welsh.”

She does not seem very thrilled

Maya looks decidedly less than impressed.

"You don't have to go and stay with Anita"

Jason protests, “Kelly, you don’t have to go and stay with Anita,” but she replies that she cannot look at him right now.   He continues, “If you had listened to the whole conversation, you would have heard me beg Howard not to do anything.”

"Just thinking of it makes me sick!"

“Just thinking of you even contemplating doing something to Jinx with Howard makes me sick!” she snarls.

"We've both made mistakes, haven't we?"

“Kelly, we’ve both made mistakes, haven’t we?

"Thinking and doing are completely different"

“Thinking about something and doing it are completely different – at the end of the day I haven’t done anything wrong, have I, Kelly?   Please.   If you need time to think about it, that’s fine, but please don’t leave,” Jason pleads,

"Can we work though this?"

“Can we work through this?”

"Fine – I'm staying . . ."

After a moment’s consideration, Kelly replies, “Fine – I’m staying –

". . . but you sleep on the air bed!"

“but I want you to sleep on the air bed.   Sleep on the air bed or I leave – two choices.”

You've got yourself in a bit of bother there, Jason, mate

She goes upstairs and Jason is dejected.
