27 June 2023

DJ is talking to Sioned . . .

DJ is again sitting by Sioned’s bedside;  “The nurse says you can come off the ventilator today,” he tells her,

. . . but receiving no reply

but of course there is no response.

"Don't you give up"

“Please try to breathe, Sioned,” he begs her, “I need you to fight – don’t you give up.”

A nurse comes to check the monitors

A nurse comes to check her condition.

"A latté and an Americano"

In the deli, Eileen is in charge and brings a latté and an Americano to Maya and Delyth;

"DJ said he would phone"

“DJ said he would phone if there was any change – I haven’t heard anything, so no news is good news,” she tells them, “She’s stable, so that’s a good thing.”

"Someone so young"

Delyth cannot believe that something like that could happen to someone so young, but Maya points out that it does happen.   “I just want her to wake up – and be the same Sioned when she does,” says Eileen, and is assured by Maya that Sioned will get there.

"I didn't realise you two were friends"

“I didn’t realise that you two were friends,” Eileen continues and is surprised to hear that they are more than friends –

"More than friends – partners"

they are partners.   She tells them that the coffees are on the house;

"You saved my daughter's life"

“You saved my daughter’s life,” she tells Maya, “The least I can do is to give you a latté and an Americano.”

When she has gone, they swap over the two coffees;

They exchange drinks

“I can’t stand a latté!” Maya growls, and must now get back to the pharmacy, as she has a batch of bunion plasters to sort out.

"She's bound to come round, Eileen"

Kelly has just come in, and is reassuring Eileen, “She’s bound to come round – it’s early days.   This looks lush – I could eat six of them!”

"Howard is around the place"

There is something which Eileen wants to tell Kelly, but she has been so busy with everything;  “Howard is out of prison and he’s around the place – but don’t let it affect you.”

"I've got bigger fish to fry"

Kelly thanks her for the information, but replies that she has bigger fish to fry, and wants Eileen to give Sioned her regards.

Presumably Dani is speaking to Elinor

Dani is frustrated and is speaking to someone on the phone;  “If he’s wet that many nappies, there must be something wrong – sorry I forgot to bring some more over.”

As soon as she ends the call, she receives another one;

"I'm dealing with it, Garry . . ."

“Garry,” she says, “Yes, well, I haven’t had a chance, with you stuck in there – yes, I’m dealing with it.   You should have thought about that!   Wow – you’ve got a cheek sometimes!

". . . he's only got me now, hasn't he?"

“And he’s only got me now, hasn’t he?   OK, so long.”

Gwern comes downstairs, and she addresses him as, “Sleeping beauty.”

"I'll make myself a sandwich . . ."

He wants to know who she was speaking to and she says that it was Mark, who has just gone.   “Do you want something to eat?” she asks, and he will make himself a sandwich,

". . . it's not rocket science"

maintaining that it is not rocket science.

However when he finds out that there is no ham in the fridge,

"I'm not hungry now"

he loses interest in food and returns upstairs.

Dani does not know what to do

Dani is left confused.

As Kelly comes round the corner, past the shop’s display of fruit and vegetables, she sees Rhys;

"I'm sure I've got some guardian angel"

“Ah, just the man I wanted to see – I’m sure I’ve got some guardian angel making things work out for me.”

"On strike last week, was he?"

He smirks, “On strike last week, was he?   Listen, you had a good bash at it, but you can’t reach the standard.   Now I’m enjoying my last day off before returning to Tomos ac Ellis.”

Kelly informs him, “I can’t wait until Griffiths hears about the mess you made of things in Cardiff.

"Griffiths will probably sack you"

“He’ll probably sack you, once he’s got the full picture.   You might as well accept it now.”

"What do you think you know, then?"

He is worried, and wants to find out what she thinks she knows.

"I had a lovely chat with someone called Beverley"

“I had a lovely chat with someone called Beverley from TS Roberts and Sons, estate agents.   She doesn’t send her regards, by the way.   She said you trashed the office after losing a client – and shouted at your bosses.”

"You have no idea what I've been through"

This has wiped the smile from Rhys’ face, and he tells her, “Do whatever you want – you have no idea what I’ve been through!   Leave me alone.”

Kelly is not going to leave it there

He walks off back to the shop flat, with Kelly following him.

When they get upstairs, she apologises for upsetting him, although he insists that he is not upset.

"Why did you storm off, then?"

“Why did you storm off, then?” she asks,

"I couldn't handle the job"

and he says that he is embarrassed – he could not handle the job.

“The bosses were so tough on us – they expected us to work 10 or 12 hours every day.

"Griffiths is like a TellyTubby in comparison"

“Griffiths is like a TellyTubby in comparison.   And the office was so cliquey – most of them were posh boys from private schools –

"I didn't fit in"

“I didn’t fit in.”

"I wouldn't have either"

Kelly confesses that she would not have either

"I just snapped one day"

and he explains that he just snapped one day because he could not handle the pressure.

"So tell Griffiths, if you want to"

“So tell Griffiths about the breakdown, if you want to – it will be no worse than what I’ve already been through.

"Now, can you just leave, please"

“Now, can you just leave, please?”

Kelly is very concerned

Kelly feels very guilty about what she said and retreats from the flat.

Dani comes into the deli

Dani comes into the deli and finds DS Fielding doing a Sudoko puzzle;  “Call me Delyth, please,” she insists.

"Thanks for helping to find Gwern"

Dani would like a chat, and to thank her for helping to find Gwern last week.

“He’s moody, and difficult,” she continues,

"That sounds like every teenager"

and Delyth thinks that sounds like every teenager.

"Not every teenager find his mother is a murderer"

“But not every teenager has lost his mother and finds out she’s a murderer – and has just had to see his father go to prison, again.”

"He has a lot to process"

The DS appreciates that he has a lot to process;

"He used to be such a sweet boy"

“He used to be such a sweet boy,” Dani goes on, “I’ve just had Garry on the phone, accusing me of being irresponsible.”

"Garry's given him such a good example"

Delyth sarcastically remarks that his father has given him such a good example.

"I don't know how to deal with Gwern any more"

“But perhaps he does have a point – I don’t know how to deal with Gwern any more.   Am I too soft – or not soft enough?   I might be paranoid, but I know he’s hiding something from me.

"I want to help, but I don't know how"

“I want to help him, but I don’t know how.”

"There's something I need to tell you"

There is something that the DS needs to tell her, but the scene abruptly shifts to the Deri,

Rhys is drowning his sorrows

where Rhys is glumly drinking at the bar.

"Who's stolen your dumbbells?"

Cassie, behind the bar, asks him, “Come on – who’s stolen your dumbbells?”   He replies that he will never trust her again.

"I haven't told anyone"

“If you’re talking about that trouble you had in Cardiff, I haven’t told anyone,” she insists, but he does not believe her.   “Believe what you want, but I’m telling the truth,” she goes on.

"Why did Kelly phone my old boss, then?"

“Why did Kelly phone my old boss, then?” he demands, “She knows about the breakdown!”   Cassie wonders why it matters, as he was not the first to go through a hard time, and will not be the last.

"Learn from your mistakes"

She advises that he cannot escape from his past or the mistakes he has made – as they tend to follow him around;  “But learn from them – that’s what you need to do.”

"Griffiths won't believe me"

He imagines that Griffiths will not believe him;  “Perhaps not – but you have more chance with her,” say Cassie, pointing to Kelly,

Coincidentally, Kelly has just arrived

who has just come through the door.

"I have an offer you can't refuse"

She comes up to the bar, and he imagines that she has come to gloat;  “Actually, Rhys, I’ve come here with an offer you can’t refuse –

"G&T, please, Cassie"

“but, if you don’t mind – a G&T, please.”

"I'm fed up with the toxic atmosphere in the office"

They look at each other and Kelly continues, “OK, I don’t know about you, but I’m fed up with the toxic atmosphere in the office.   The only person who benefits from you and me playing tit-for-tat is Ieuan.”

"What are you suggesting?"

He wonders what she is suggesting and she explains, “Job-share.”   He is incredulous that she means him and her,

"Yeah, Rhys – you and me"

so she snarls, “No, Dai and Britt!   Yeah, Rhys – you and me – we share our jobs, share our responsibilities – and actually help each other!   It would be easier to meet Griffiths’ stupid targets with two heads, don’t you think?

"But if you want to be an office boy . . ."

“But if you want to be an office boy, I get it – it’s up to you.”

Cassie brings the G&T

Cassie, who has been listening to this, presents Kelly with her G&T.

"Why would you hide a gun for him?"

“Why would you hide a gun for him?” Dani demands, and she is told that the DS did not want to get him in trouble.   “Where did he get it a gun, anyway?” is the next question.

"It was in number 7"

When she is informed that it was in the house – number 7 – and that Gwern was sure that Garry had given it to Tyler,

"Seren or Gabriel could have found it"

Dani exclaims, “Seren or Gabriel could have found it – I feel sick!”

"OK, I'll be there now"

Eileen, behind the counter, hears her phone ringing and is told something by DJ;  “OK, I’ll be there now,” she answers,

"Can you look after the place, please?"

and asks if the DS can look after the deli for her, as she rushes out of the shop.

"Try to squeeze my hand, Sioned"

Sioned is now conscious and is asked by a nurse to squeeze his hand,

She manages to comply with the instruction

which she manages to do.

“Great – things are looking promising,” he tells her and DJ is very pleased.

"Scott Gibbs scored against England!"

“That’s the best thing I’ve heard since Scott Gibbs scored against England in 1999!” he says.

"Trust you to make everything about rugby"

Sioned can trust him to make everything about rugby.

"You have no idea how happy I am to hear your voice"

“You have no idea how happy I am to hear your voice,” he tells her, but she is still very sleepy.

"He should be punished"

Delyth insists that Gwern has been through enough already, but Dani is of the opinion, “If he’s done something wrong, he should be punished.”

"He could end up in a Detention Centre"

She is warned that he could end up in a Detention Centre.

"You've taught him his actions have no consequences"

Dani protests that by doing this Delyth has taught him that his actions have no consequences.

“What is the best outcome?” the DS demands, “Keeping him home with his family, who support and love him?   Or sticking him in prison?”   Dani predicts that at least he would learn his lesson.

"I've found out the hard way"

“I’ve found out the hard way the effect those places have on children – you wouldn’t want that for Gwern, believe me.   Sometimes following the rules isn’t the best thing to do.”

"You just collapsed – don't you remember?"

DJ is telling Sioned what happened;  “During the warm-up, without warning, you just collapsed, don’t you remember?   Your heart stopped – we don’t know what caused it, but they’re still doing tests on you.”

Sioned is very worried

Sioned looks desperately concerned.

"Oh, Sioned – you frightened us"

Then her mother rushes in;  “Oh, Sioned – you frightened us,” she says,

"What's the matter with me, Mam?"

but Sioned wants to know what is the matter with her.

"You must rest now"

She is told to rest now, because she looks completely exhausted.

They are both very anxious

Eileen and DJ look anxiously at each other.

"He said he'd think about it"

Kelly is on the phone to Jason;  “I mean, and then he had the audacity to say he’d think about it.   I’m trying to see the bigger picture, Jase, but seriously . . .”   Then there is a knock at the door and she has to terminate  the call.

"All right, spit it out!"

When she sees who is at the door, she tells him. “All right, spit it out!”

"I'd love to share the job . . ."

Rhys concedes that he would love to share the job with her –

". . . if the offer's still there"

if the offer is still there.   She pretends that she has had second thoughts;  “Im not sure,” but when she sees the anguished look on his face,

"Only joking – come here!"

she adds, “Only joking – come here!” and she gives him a hug.

"Perhaps I've been a little bit childish"

He confesses that perhaps he has been acting a little bit childish;

"I might have been a little bit pushy"

Kelly in turn admits that she may have been a little bit pushy with the idea and will make them a cup of tea.

"Howard's back in Deri Fawr"

“You know what?   Actually I’ve had news from hell today – Howard’s back in Deri Fawr!   I mean, I knew he wouldn’t be in jail for ever, like, but it’s still a shock to hear that he’s back.   You and I need to make sure our pasts don’t hold us back – onwards and upwards.

"Griffiths will hate the fact it's our idea!'

“You know what the best thing is about us sharing our jobs?   Griffiths will hate the fact that it’s our idea!”

The impenetrable Welsh language

In their flat, wherever that might be, Maya is having trouble with her Welsh learning;  “A table’s a ‘he’, a chair’s a ‘she’, but a corner’s an ‘hermaphrodite’ – why?” she demands.

"It's a great mystery"

Delyth is toying with her meal and describes it as one of the great mysteries of the Welsh language.   Maya asks what that paella has done to her, but she replies that she is not hungry.

"Something's up, isn't it?"

Maya deduces  that something is up.

"I'd better explain"

Delyth has little choice but to explain;

She reaches down by the fridge . . .

from down beside the fridge

. . . and gets the gun . . .

she takes out the gun which she has hidden.

. . . which causes Maya some alarm

Maya is very angry to see it and, backing away from her, leaves the room.

Dani discovers . . .

Dani come downstairs

. . . Gwen watching television

to see Gwern watching the television;  she turns it off and sits by him.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

“I saw Fielding earlier – why didn’t you tell me?”

"She promised she wouldn't tell anyone"

“She promised she wouldn’t tell anyone,” he replies, but Dani reminds him that she is not just anyone.

"What did you intend to do with it?"

He could have hurt someone – or himself.   She demands what he was intending to do with it;

"I don't know"

he does not know the answer to that.

"You could end up in Young Offenders"

“This is serious – if Fielding hadn’t covered for you, you could end up in Young Offenders.”

"Yeah, I know"

He says he is quite aware of that,

"You could have killed someone"

and Dani asks if he realises that he could have killed someone.

"I take after my mother, don't?"

“I take after my mother, don’t I?” he comments, gets up and goes upstairs.

Maya sits on the bench

Maya is sitting disconsolately on the bench by the alley and Delyth joins her there;  they look at each other,

"It was Gwern's gun"

and Delyth explains that it was Gwern’s  gun – or rather, Garry’s, who gave it to Tyler.

"What's it doing in the flat?"

Maya wants to know what it is doing the flat.

"I couldn't bring myself to report it"

“I couldn’t bring myself to report it,” she is told, “And now it’s too late.”   Maya insists that it is never too late and that she has to do so.

"I'll lose my job"

“I’ll lose my job,” Delyth tells her, and is advised to tell them that she found the gun.   “I’ve already had Dani have a go at me,” she says, “But I thought you’d understand.”

"Understand why you brought a gun into our home?"

“Understand why you’ve brought a gun into our home?   I’m sorry, I don’t!” snaps Maya.

"I can't see Gwern go down for this"

Delyth insists that she cannot see Gwern go down for this, but is reminded that it is not her place to decide.   “Hand it in – it’s your duty!” Maya tells her

She is in quite a spot

and Delyth is left in a quandary.
