"So Mam-gu got married to Iori in Las Vegas?"

Guto is trying to get his head around what his grandmother has said;  “So, she got married to Iori in Las Vegas?”   His father confirms that is what he understands,

"She was on the brandy"

but his mother was on the brandy, so he did not get much sense out of her.

Guto agrees, “Yes, she was snoring loudly when I got back from work.

"How did he die?"

“How did he die?”   Gerwyn says that he believes it was a heart attack, and he thinks that Brenda was there when it happened.

"Did you say anything about Mam?"

“Did you say anything about Mam?” Guto asks.

Gerwyn replies, “I didn’t get the chance – a death is worse than an affair, isn’t it?”

Gerwyn hears footsteps

They hear footsteps coming downstairs,

"My heart is in pieces"

and Brenda rather theatrically tells Guto that her heart is in pieces.

He replies that he is so sorry about Iori, and she maintains, “I loved him so much – why do bad things always happen to me?”

"Would you like a glass of brandy?"

Guto wonders whether she would like glass of brandy, but Gerwyn considers that a cup of tea would be more appropriate;

She does not agree with him

she looks rather disapproving about this suggestion.

Sara is reading a magazine

In the café flat, Sara is looking through a magazine when Kelly comes upstairs;

Things are very tense

the atmosphere between them is obviously very fraught.   Sara thinks she had better move that magazine;  “You wouldn’t want to know anything about the wedding, would you?” she snarls.

"Some people think I haven't got any friends"

“I’ve been away with Dylan and a few friends – although some people think I don’t have friends!”

"I shouldn't have talked to you like that"

Kelly attempts an apology, “Listen, I want to say sorry about the other day, OK, because, I mean, I was shattered, but I shouldn’t have talked to you like that.”

"I don't expect to be treated like that!"

Sara pontificates that she does not expect to be treated like that when is she is paying rent.   “I know that, and I’m sorry, OK?” Kelly says,

"I'll do the dishes for you for a week"

“And I promise I’ll . . . I don’t know . . . I’ll do the dishes for you for a week.”

Sara’s attitude appears to soften and she says she forgives Kelly,

"Good, because I hate the tension"

who is pleased to hear it, as she hates the tension, and offers Sara another cup of tea.

“I’ve been trying to get hold of Jason,” Sara continues,

"Jason's had a really busy week"

and Kelly says that he has had a really busy week.   “I was just wondering when his APD money will come through.”

"He's decided not to . . ."

Kelly informs her, “He’s decided not to . . .” and then stops as she realises she should not have said anything.   Sara’s fury is again ignited, as Kelly explains, “He’s decided not to sell, because he wants to find a way to keep the business.”

"How am I going to get my money?"

Sara yells, “How am I going to get my money?   I need the money to put towards a house Dylan and I are going to buy.   I’ve got no hope of getting it unless he sells!”

"I don't know much about Jason's financial situation"

Kelly says that she does not know much about Jason’s financial situation,

"If you want to be with a gambling addict!"

and Sara sneers at her, “As I said, you’d better keep an eye on him, if you want to be with a gambling addict!”

"Just like you did?"

Kelly is also becoming angry;  “Just like you did?” she demands, but Sara points out that she had no idea what was going on, unlike Kelly, who chose to be with him.

"No bridesmaid yet – why doesn't that surprise me?"

“Have you found a bridesmaid yet?” Kelly squeals, “No?   Why doesn’t that surprise me?” and she walks out of the room.

"You can't cancel now!"

Dani is shouting into the phone, “You can’t cancel now – Teddy’s party’s today!   What do you want me to do – let everyone down?   Right, OK, stuff you then!”

"This party will be a disaster!"

She informs Tyler that it was the magician, and predicts that the party will be a disaster.

"It's only a party for a dog, Dani"

He argues that it is not essential that she has a magician, but she is insistent that everything has to be perfect.   “It’s only a party for a dog,” he reminds her.

"I want to prove I'm fine without him!"

She explains that she wants everything to be perfect, as this is the first thing she has organised since Garry left:  “I want to prove to everybody that I’m fine without him – and that the children are fine without him!   Seren looks at me sometimes, you know,

"Even though I'm dying inside"

“and even though I’m dying inside, I have to prove to her that Mami’s strong, and that we’re all going to be OK.   That’s why this is more than just a party.”

Tyler will find a magician

Tyler assures her that he will do everything to make sure it is perfect;  he picks up his phone, and says, “Now, magicians.”

Brenda puts on the tears

Brenda sits, looking suitably upset, while Gerwyn and Guto are lost for anything to say;

"Can I get you something to eat, Mam?"

finally Gerwyn asks if she wants something to eat, and she murmurs, “I’m not sure if I can stomach anything – but I’ll try my best.

"A bacon sandwich with brown sauce"

“A bacon sandwich, with brown sauce.”   Gerwyn nods to Guto to go and prepare it, then summons up the courage to tell his mother about what has happened,

"Go on, Dad, tell her"

but fails at the last moment.

"It happened during lockdown"

“Mam, how long were you and Iori together?” he says instead, and is told that it happened in lockdown, when they were stuck in Vegas.

“He was such good company – but, looking back, I think we’d been in love since the first day we met.

"Why is life so unfair?"

“Oh, why is life so unfair?   We were both so happy – is Jac or Tes around?   I could really do with a woman.”

"A few things have happened since you left"

“Listen, a few things have happened since you left,” Gerwyn begins, and she demands what is wrong,

"My heart can't take any more bad news"

suspecting that her heart cannot take any more bad news.   “Nobody’s ill, Mam – Jaclyn . . .” Gerwyn stutters, and Guto has to take over from him.

"Mam's been having an affair – with Garry Monk!"

“Mam’s been having an affair – with Garry Monk!”

"When I get hold of those two . . ."

Brenda demands where she is, and promises that when she gets hold of Jaclyn and Garry . . .

Guto enlightens her that his mother is not there;  “She and Tes have gone away for a few days.”   She immediately decides that Gerwyn is looking pale, and wonders if he has been eating;  she is sure that he has lost weight.   But now she is here to look after him,

"He is not looking forward to Mam looking after him

a prospect which he does not appear to relish.

Tyler wants Iolo's help

Iolo has a visitor at number 7;  Tyler says, “I need your help – the magician for Teddy’s party has just cancelled.”

"And why does that concern me?"

Iolo wonders what he is supposed to do about that, and is told, “You’ve always been good with balloons, haven’t you?”

"Yes, I made a horse once for Greta"

Iolo protests that all he did was to make a horse once for Greta, and Tyler remarks that she loved it.   “Please, Iol – I’m doing this for Dani and I want the party to be perfect,” Tyler pleads,

"Dani wants to show she doesn't need Garry"

“Dani’s using this party to show everybody she doesn’t need Garry.

Will Iolo be persuaded?

“I wouldn’t ask unless I really needed your help.”

Dani's efforts are not going well

Meanwhile in the Deri, Dani is becoming increasingly exasperated as she attempts to put up decorations.   Then Sara comes breezing in and asks what time the party begins;

"Half past three – if it goes ahead!"

“Half past three – if it goes ahead!” groans Dani, “It’s not easy being a single mother, especially when everybody’s talking about you.”

Sara maintains that people are just worried about her,

"Us women have to stick together"

and says, “Us women have to stick together – so if you want a chat, a rant or a bottle of wine, just remember I’m here.”

"Cocktails, dancing, everything!"

Dani replies that what she really needs is a night out;  “Cocktails, dancing, everything!   Everything I put up, everything I’m doing, just looks stupid!”

"You're talking to an interior designer here"

“Hey, remember you’re talking to an interior designer here,” Sara interrupts her, “I’m fab with bunting!” and so they set about the decorations, just as Tyler comes back in, offering to help.

They are confident they do not need Tyler's help

“We don’t need men, do we?” Sara tells him, so he will make a cup of tea.

Brenda has smartened herself up a bit

Brenda moans on, “I’ve treated Jaclyn as a daughter for more than 20 years, and this is how she thanks me . . . us.   How long has she been sleeping with him?”   Gerwyn does not want to talk about it, but his mother goes on, “Wait until I get hold of her.”

"Shall I take this upstairs, Mam?"

Gerwyn is about to take her case upstairs, but she does not know if she can face unpacking it;

"Iori's inside"

“Iori’s inside,” she sobs,

Gerwyn does not like the sound of this

and Gerwyn looks at the case in a perplexed manner.

"I could never have done this without you, Sara"

Preparations for the party seem to be well advanced;  “I could never have done all this without you, Sara,” says Dani, “And you, Tyler.”   Sara is glad that she could help.

Then she continues, “We’re friends, aren’t we?

"There's something I'd like to ask you"

“There’s something I’d like to ask you.”

Kelly is lurking by the door

Kelly happens to have come in at that moment, and lurks by the door, to listen.   Dani says that after all her help today, she would do anything.

"How would you like to be my bridesmaid?"

“How would you like to be my bridesmaid?” says Sara,

"You're serious, aren't you?"

which makes Dani snigger, not believing she is serious.   “Look at the laugh we’ve had sorting out today – imagine the fun we’d have organising a wedding!”

"Just as I thought"

Kelly can see that her suspicions were correct,

"Your fiancé's sister has gone off with my husband"

as Dani reminds Sara, “The thing is, your fiancé’s sister has just gone off with my husband!”

"That's not Dylan's fault, is it?"

Sara acknowledges that it is terrible, but stresses that it is not Dylan’s fault, and that she may need this to take her mind off things;  “Because it’s obvious you’ve been struggling.”

"The last thing I want is to organise someone else's wedding"

“Obvious, is it?” demands Dani, “The last thing I want to do now, Sara, is to organise someone else’s wedding – when my own marriage has just ended!

"I knew today was a stupid idea . . ."

“I knew today was a stupid idea –

". . . especially as I'm 'struggling'!"

“especially as I’m ‘struggling’!   Why did I think I could cope?   The party’s off!”

"You're incredible!"

At this point, Kelly comes to the bar;  “You’re incredible!” she says, and Sara tells her to shut her mouth.

"Asking Dani in her situation?"

“Asking Dani in her situation?   Not fair!” is Kelly’s evaluation.

"You don't want me to find anyone, do you?"

“You just don't want me to find anybody, do you?” snarls Sara, “Do you know what your problem is with this wedding?   You’re jealous!   Did you persuade Jason not to sell APD – so I wouldn’t get my money?”

Kelly laughs at her

Kelly chuckles, as Sara rages on,

"You can't stand that I've upgraded to Dylan!"

“You can’t stand the fact that I’ve upgraded to Dylan, and you’re stuck with a loser!”

"Jason's a hundred times the person you are!"

Kelly emphatically points out, “Jason’s a hundred times the person you are, right?   You haven’t upgraded to Dylan – no way – because he's as dodgy as hell!

"I give your marriage six months, tops!"

“I give your marriage six-months, tops!”

The entrance of the clown

With a clattering sound, Iolo comes in, wearing full clown regalia, and greets them;  “What’s going on?   Is everybody all right?” he enquires.   Sara informs him that the party is off and stalks out.

Tyler admires Iolo's costume

Tyler looks at Iolo’s costume.

Brenda is sitting with the urn

At number 10, Brenda is sitting with an urn, allegedly containing Iori’s ashes, beside her, much to the discomfiture of both Gerwyn and Guto.

"Does that have to sit with us?"

“Does that have to sit with us?” Guto asks, and it she responds that it is Iori, but he still regards it as rather creepy.

“I want him nearby, and anyway, it’s important that your father can see him,” she says,

"You're never too old to find love again"

“It’s a symbol that you’re never too old to find love again.   Perhaps our story has come to a cruel and tragic end, but the happiness I found during the short time I was his wife was worth it.”

"Why don't you go for a lie down, Mam?"

Gerwyn suggests that she go upstairs for a lie down, and she thinks that would do her good, asking for another brandy and something else to eat.

"A proper husband and wife on our wedding night"

“I’m just glad we had the opportunity to be proper husband and wife on our wedding night – if you understand what I’m saying.”

Guto is giggling

As Guto tries to stifle his laughter, she places the urn on the table

"Look after him"

and goes on, “Look after him.”

Gerwyn looks at Guto . . .

She goes upstairs and Gerwyn turns to look at his son,

. . . who has  now succumbed to laughter

who is now spluttering with laughter.

"She's going to have a small party with Gwern and Seren"

At the bar in the Deri, Iolo asks Tyler how Dani is;  “She’s going to have a small party upstairs with Gwern and Seren.”

"It's a pity, after all this work . . ."

Iolo thinks it is a pity, after all the preparations;

". . . I went all the way to Swansea for this"

he went all the way to Swansea to pick up the outfit.   “I thought Teddy might like it,” he says.

"Where's the party, then?"

Aled walks in to find them talking, and asks where the party is;

"Dani had a meltdown"

“Dani had a meltdown – it’s a kids’ party upstairs now,” answers Tyler.

Aled is uncomfortable

Aled is obviously uncomfortable that Iolo is there, and goes upstairs.

"How are things with you two?"

Iolo how things are going, and Tyler replies that it is fine;  Iolo leaves to remove his costume and refuses another drink, giving the excuse that he is inappropriately dressed.

Dani has reassembled the party upstairs

Upstairs, Dani is preparing the large amount of food for two children when Aled comes in;  she tells him that it is just a party for the children now,

"I wanted to check you're OK"

but he says he wanted to check that she was OK.

“Yes, I’m fine – I was just trying to do too much,” she acknowledges, “I feel terrible for cancelling at the last minute, when Iolo had dressed up and everything.”

"Do you think Tyler still likes him?"

Aled gets round to the real reason he is there;  “Do you think that Tyler still likes him?   They still seem to be very close.”   She explains that the two of them have been through a lot, and will still be in each other’s lives because of Greta, but it is Aled that Tyler wants to be with.

"It's obvious he adores you"

“Yes, it’s obvious that he adores you, OK?” she stresses.

"Did you make this cake?"

He admires Teddy’s birthday cake, which Dani made, and she admits that she is rather chuffed with it.

Tyler is listening

Tyler has come into the room,

"Caramel buttercream"

as she explains that it is chocolate sponge with caramel buttercream;  she will save him a piece.

"I'll make you some chocolate brownies"

“I started baking during lockdown,” Aled tells her, “People tell me my chocolate brownies are to die for – I’ll make you some.”   Tyler asks if Aled is ready to go,

"I'll bring them over next week"

and he promises to bring over some brownies next week.

Dani assures Tyler that she is all right now,

"Enjoy the party, Dani"

and he hopes that she enjoys the party with the children.

She puts the birthday cake on the table

They both leave and Dani puts the birthday cake on the table.

As soon as Kelly comes upstairs . . .

Kelly comes upstairs from the café,

. . . Sara starts sniping

and Sara, who is sitting in the dark, remarks, “I see you’re using my green tea again – you like helping yourself to everything I have, don’t you?”

Kelly has had about enough of this

Kelly slams down the container on the worktop,

"Here come the dramatics!"

and Sara anticipates that now the dramatics are coming.

"I've tried to make this work for Ifan's sake"

“Right, I’ve tried to make this work for Ifan’s sake,” Kelly begins, “But I can’t do this, Sara!   It’s toxic!   I want you to leave!”

Sara looks at her with astonishment;

"It's not fair on Ifan – or me, actually!"

“You heard me – it’s not fair on Ifan – or me, actually,” Kelly exclaims.

"I think you throwing us out is not fair!"

Sara regards Kelly throwing them out on the street as unfair,

"Ifan can stay . . ."

and she is told, in no uncertain terms, “Ifan can stay –

". . . it's you I want out — ASAP!"

it’s you I want out – ASAP!”   Sara wears her offended look.
