| The Christmas tree is a casualty of the storm |
Outside the Deri, Mark is clearing up the Christmas tree which has been felled by the storm and someone is waiting at the bus stop, when Rhys comes past on his run. “Burning off the calories after Christmas, is it?” Mark asks him

| "Was your house damaged?" |
and he wonders if Mark’s house was damaged by the storm.
 |
| "Not after the storm, no" |
“Not after the storm, no!” Mark gruffly replies; Rhys found it awful, sitting in the cold, eating crisps with his father and Esther, dismissing it as a Christmas to forget. This is exactly how Mark is feeling.

| Cheryl approaches |
Cheryl walks towards the Deri and ignores Mark when he tries to speak to her;
 |
| "Give me a chance to explain myself" |
he begs, “Please – listen – you haven’t given me a chance to explain myself.”
“What is there to explain? You slept with my sister!” He attempts to point out that he and Cheryl were not together when it happened. “It’s the lying I can’t handle,” she continues,
 |
| "Surely I've been punished enough" |
and he argues that she has punished him enough – he could have caught a cold, out in that rain yesterday.
“If I lost my voice, I would be out of the Panto,” he says.
 |
| "I should give you a right hook for what you did!" |
She considers him lucky if he has only caught a cold; “I should give you a right hook for what you did!” she snarls.
 |
| The master (Mistress?) of the hunt |
At Penrhewl, Eileen has put on her hunting outfit and is looking very pleased with herself; when Howard comes in,
 |
| "Got som thing special on today, have we?" |
he laughs, “Got something special on today, have we?” She reveals that it is a Christmas present to herself,
 |
| "It looks good on you" |
and he remarks that it looks good on her.
 |
| "Don't let your fancy woman hear that" |
“But don’t let your fancy woman hear that,” she warns him, “Don’t be clever with me – what do you want?”
 |
| "There's a tree down in the top field" |
He has come to complain that a tree has come down in the top field in the storm and damaged the fence between Penrhewl and Deri Fawr.
She says that she will sort it out, but he is happy to do it, “For the right price, of course.” Eileen tells him to let her know how much it costs,

| He picks up a riding crop |
then he notices on the table, a riding crop.
 |
| "It's so frustrating!" |
Eileen takes it from him and moans, “It’s so frustrating, the number of people who don’t understand how beneficial this hunt will be for this area.” He agrees that townies are full of support when you talk about diversification, but they do not really want it.
 |
| "A chance to discuss the hunt properly" |
“I’ve organised a dinner for the supporters next week – a little perk for them and a chance to discuss the hunt properly.”
 |
| "You'll have to get everyone on side" |
Howard points out that she will have to get everyone on side if she wants to succeed; “People won’t want to pay twice to see people with banners and police all over the place!”
 |
| APD has also been flooded |
The storm has flooded APD as well, which surprises Anita when she walks in;
 |
| "Water came in through the roof" |
Jason explains that water came through the roof last night and Mathew will have to fix the broken tile. She asks if there is much damage.
 |
| "Your 'Meddal' stuff took the biggest hit" |
“Not to APD’s stock,” she is told, “But your ‘Meddal’ stuff took the biggest hit.”
 |
| Anita is aghast |
She is heartbroken.
 |
| "I thought you would have a lot of catching up to do" |
In the Deri, Cassie smiles when Kath comes downstairs; “I wasn’t expecting to see you this morning with Brynmor home – I thought you would have a lot of ‘catching’ up to do.”
 |
| "The jet lag has kicked in" |
Kath replies that jet lag has now kicked in and he is asleep.
 |
| "You should never give in to jet lag" |
Mark comments that the last thing he should do is give in to jet lag; “He’ll never get back in sync.”
 |
| "Might as well stay on American time" |
Cassie adds that if he is going back for this case, he might as well stay on American time.
“How long will he be staying?” and Kath is not sure yet. Cassie appreciates that it will be difficult to see him leave again.
 |
| "I need to have some time off" |
“Yeah, well, that’s why I would like to take some time off next week,” Kath goes on, “So we can catch up a bit more.”
 |
| "The New Year will be very busy!" |
Cassie does not like the sound of this, as it will be the New Year and the Deri will be very busy.
Kath is adamant that she will organise cover; she thinks that they will be going to the Cotswolds, something which Brynmor is organising.
 |
| "Could you provide the food for the event?" |
Eileen comes in asking for some help; “Cae Glas was going to prepare the food for the hunt dinner, but the oven at Penrhewl is on the blink – and I want to know if you would prepare the food for the event. I want the best and I’m willing to pay for it – and a bit extra, as it’s so last-minute – shall we say £15 per head?”

| "And you thought of us straightaway" |
Cassie considers that it is a shame about the oven, and Kath remarks on it being Christmas time as well. “And you thought of us straightaway,” adds Cassie.

| "I knew I'd get the best from you" |
“I knew I’d get the best from you,” insists Eileen, full of smiles.
 |
| "Why didn't you go to DJ and Sioned?" |
Cassie wonders why she did not think of going to DJ and Sioned at Tamed to ask if she could use their oven.
 |
| "They're rather busy at the moment" |
This quietens down Eileen quite a bit, as she maintains that they are rather busy at the moment.
 |
| "Stop lying – you're trying to bribe us" |
“Oh, stop lying, Eileen – we know you’re trying to bribe us,” responds Kath, and Cassie points out that they do not want blood money. Eileen is quickly back to her abrasive self and as she turns to leave,

| "Are you going to buy a ticket?" |
Cassie enquires whether she fancies buying a ticket for the ‘Siôn Blewyn Coch’ Panto.
 |
| "I'll be too busy, preparing" |
“I’ve never read the story and I’ll be too busy preparing next week, anyway!” Eileen snarls and storms out of the pub.

| It is raining outside |
She puts up her umbrella as she leaves and when Cheryl passes, she wishes Eileen Merry Christmas.
 |
| "It's not Christmas any more!" |
“It’s not Christmas any more!” Eileen growls. Cheryl concludes that Eileen’s Christmas was about as great as her own.
 |
| Eileen offers Cheryl some work |
Eileen seizes this opportunity to offer Cheryl the job as a server for a dinner she is throwing to organise the hunt next week. She emphasises that she will pay well, but Cheryl realises that is the same night as the Panto, so will be happy to help.
‘I’m done with the ’Beautiss’ business and the extra cash would come in handy,” she says,

“But I shall expect time-and-a-half, over the New Year.”

| "I'll contact you nearer the time" |
Eileen will contact her nearer the time.
Then Eileen encounters Ieuan outside Tomos ac Ellis; “Did you get my message about the dinner next week?” she asks,

| "Looking forward to it, Eileen" – especially the free food |
and he says he is looking forward to it. He cannot stop as he is expecting a call from a client.

| Things seem to be falling into place |
Eileen is pleased that things are going according to plan.
 |
| "I thought you could work" |
Cassie informs Cheryl that they are rehearsing for the panto tonight and tomorrow night; “There isn’t long before the performance. As you’re not in the panto, I thought you could work.”
 |
| "Sorry, I shall be busy" |
Cheryl regrets that she cannot, as she will be busy.
 |
| "What are you doing, then?" |
When Mark asks what she will be doing,
 |
| "None of your business!" |
she abruptly tells him, “None of your business!”
 |
| "Whatever it is, sort it out!" |
Cassie wonders what he has done and tells him to sort it out. He protests that he is trying to do that.
While Cheryl is clearing tables, Gaynor comes in;

| "I thought if I came here as a customer . . ." |
“I thought if I was here as a customer, you would have to talk to me – even if you ignore me at home.”
Cheryl initially has nothing to say, but then reconsiders;

| "The storm is over, so you can move out . . ." |
“Actually, there is something – the storm is over, so you can move out!
 |
| ". . . by the time I finish my shift" |
“I want you out by the time I finish my shift!”
 |
| Gaynor is speechless |
Gaynor is rendered absolutely speechless by this.

| Anita has called for assistance |
Ieuan Griffiths rushes into APD, accompanied by Rhys,
 |
| "The rain has destroyed all my 'Meddal' stuff!" |
and demands what is the emergency, for which they have been summoned. “The rain has come through the roof and it’s destroyed all my ‘Meddal’ stuff!” she exclaims.

Ieuan is exasperated, while Rhys had thought that the roof had collapsed or something. She insists, “It hasn’t – but I want your help because

| "I want to start 2024 with a clean slate" |
“I want to start 2024 with a clean slate – that means selling all this stuff. I have to do it now, because I don’t want it like an albatross around my neck!”

| "I've got better things to do!" |
Rhys angrily replies that he has better things to do and advises her to put it in the skip. “I can’t do that – it cost me a lot of money!” she shouts,

| "You're professional salesmen" |
“You’re professional salesmen! Ieuan, please, love. It’s cost me a fortune already!”

which Gaynor selects and puts into her bag, ready to leave Maes-y-Deri.

deciding to give things one more try.

| Ieuan has been set to work |
Ieuan has been commandeered to assist and is tidying up the last of the bags of damaged ‘Meddal’ products.

| Anita is depressed |
“If there was ever a visual representation of my business acumen, here it is – a pile of rubbish! Perfect, isn’t it?” Anita groans.
 |
| "It was not your fault the roof leaked" |
He points out that it was not her fault that the roof leaked.
 |
| "I do think I let 'Meddal' take over" |
“But I do think I let ‘Meddal’ take over,” she concedes, “I didn’t mean what I said the other day, you know – why would anyone be jealous of such a failure? It’s true, isn’t it?

| "Louise was putting pressure on me . . ." |
“I owe you an apology as well – yes I do – Louise was putting pressure on me
 |
| ". . . so I took £500 out of our account" |
“and I took £500 out of our account, without asking you.”

| Ieuan restrains himself |
Ieuan’s encouraging expression suddenly changes, but he resists the urge to show any anger towards her.
 |
| "I want to prove something" |
She insists that she wants to run her own business again and prove something; his response is to assure her that she does not need to work at all if she does not want to. “But what would I do, eh? Sit at home, like an old woman, doing nothing? No, thank you!”
Ieuan says that is one of the things he admires most about her;

Now she is convinced that he is talking rubbish.

“I’m certain he would not give up after one bit of misfortune – if you want to sell this stock, I’m sure you can!

| "I'll be living there on my own" |
Cheryl comes upstairs to the Deri flat, apologising for spoiling Kath’s coffee break; “I really like living in Maes-y-Deri, but there has been a change in circumstances. I’ll be living there on my own from now on, so I was wondering . . .”

| "I won't be able to drop the rent" |
Kath is surprised to hear that Gaynor is moving out; “I won’t be able to drop the rent, just because she’s moving out,” but that apparently is not what Cheryl is asking.
 |
| "Can I pay it a bit late?" |
“I was just going to ask if I could pay next month’s rent a bit late,” she continues, and Kath agrees to an extra couple of weeks, but does not want to be pushed.
 |
| "I thought you were going to put in your notice" |
“I thought for a minute there you were going to put in your notice,” Kath sighs, but Cheryl does have a work related request as well.
 |
| "I don't want to work the same shifts as Mark" |
She does not want to work the same shifts as Mark any more.
 |
| "I'm not pussyfooting around you two" |
“I can’t run a business, pussyfooting around you two and your tiffs,” Kath warns, but she is told that it is not a ‘tiff’. “What is it, then?”

| "You'd better ask your son!" |
She is advised to ask her son; “But I am telling you now, after today, if I turn up for a shift and he’s here, I’m going straight home!”
 |
| "Did you have a good Christmas?" |
Downstairs, Hywel is asking Mark if he had a good Christmas,
 |
| Mark's mind is otherwise occupied |
but Mark does not reply, simply watching Cheryl walking past.
 |
| "What have you done to upset Cheryl?" |
His mother follows her down and demands, “What have you done to upset Cheryl?”
He does not want to talk about it,
 |
| "Sort it out – it's damaging my business" |
but is instructed, “Well, sort it out – it’s damaging my business! She doesn’t want to work at the same shifts as you – just say sorry, please!” He knows that it will not be that easy.
 |
| "I'm not going to let this happen" |
Gaynor arrives and tells Cheryl, “I’m not going to let this happen,” but Cheryl simply walks away.
 |
| "We're sisters – above that we're friends" |
“Look, I’ve lived my whole life without you – and I don’t want to live the rest of my life without you,” she pleads, “We’re sisters – above that, we’re friends, aren’t we?”

Mark is behind the bar, eavesdropping on this conversation

| "True family forgive each other" |
as Gaynor goes on, “I know I’ve done something terrible – but true family forgive each other, don’t they?”

| "True family do forgive each other . . ." |
Hywel also appears to be taking an interest. As Kath comes in through the door, Cheryl replies, “Yes, you’re right – true family do forgive each other –

| ". . . I know exactly what sort of person you are . . ." |
“but we’re not true family, are we? I hardly know you, really, and what you did has shown me exactly what sort of person you are – and I don’t want you in my life!”
Gaynor wails that she does not want to lose Cheryl, but the loud response,

audible to everyone in the pub, is, “You slept with my boyfriend, Gaynor! I don’t want to be your sister – I don’t want to be your friend –

| "Now it's public knowledge!" |
“I don’t want to be anywhere near either of you.”

| "Did I hear that right?" |
This makes Hywel sit up and take notice,

| Gaynor retreats |
while Gaynor makes a hurried exit.
 |
| "Can you work the day of the Panto?" |
After that outburst, Kath would like to talk to Cheryl about these shifts; “I’ll keep you two apart – but can you work the day of the Panto?” It will be so busy, and only Cassie and Mark will be here. I’m going away and I need you – please?”

| "Eileen's offering time-and-a-half" |
She is told, “I’m helping Eileen with this posh do she’s planning – and she’s offering time-and-a-half.” Kath agrees that she will match that, but only for that day.
 |
| "I'll text Eileen to cancel" |
Cheryl agrees that she will work that day and will text Eileen to cancel; Kath is very grateful for that.

| Eileen is plotting |
At Deri Fawr, Eileen and Howard are planning their strategy for the hunt, while Huwi-John is reading a book; “You need to make sure there are more than two trails,” Eileen emphasises.

| "So finding evidence will be more difficult" |
Howard knows the reason for this; “Because if the fox is killed, it will be more difficult to find evidence if there’s more than one trail.”
 |
| "That's not official, of course" |
She assures him that is not officially the plan, and suggests that he should follow the hunt on his quad –
 |
| "And wear a mask" |
and wear a mask, so that no-one will recognise him.
 |
| "How about insurance?" |
He enquires about the insurance,
 |
| "We don't need it on private land" |
but she is adamant that they do not need insurance on private land.
“Look, I’m not a stickler for the law, but this hunt is high-profile. 
"I don't want to go back to jail"
“If I get caught, I don’t want to go back to jail.” She is quite certain that nothing like that will happen.

When Mathew comes into APD, he finds Jason applying some ‘Meddal’ product to his hands.

| "I've told her she can't sell it here!" |
“What’s this? I haven’t told Anita that she can sell the stuff here!” Mathew protests. Jason assumed that she had permission and would be glad to get rid of it.

| "Go on, try some, Math!" |
“Mind you, my hands were in bits just now, so I tried some of this – go on, try some – before anyone sees us.

| "Stop being such baby!" |
“Stick your finger in, Mathew – stop being a baby!”

| "It's not taking up much space" |
As he does so, Anita arrives with a cup of tea, fortunately she is in a more conciliatory mood; “It’s not taking up much space, and I promise you I won’t give the hard sell to people buying screws.”

“Anita, we sell wood and pipes here, right?” Mathew insists, before going outside.

Jason tells her that if it makes her feel better, he really likes it.

She points out that there is a market out there which she has not tapped into yet – men.

When Eileen is ready to leave Deri Fawr, she calls to Huwi, who is still engrossed in the book, finding that it is ‘Siôn Blewyn Coch’ which she greets with distaste. “That’s what the Panto is.”

She is told that Tegwen and Ken left some books there last week.

| "This is a story about a fox!" |
Eileen realises that Siôn Blewyn Coch is a fox; “This is a story about a fox! I can’t believe this!

“Cassie is doing a Panto that’s anti-hunting propaganda!

| "Don't take it so personally, Eileen" |
Howard advises her not to take it so personally, but she exclaims, “How am I supposed to take it? She was basically laughing in my face in the Deri earlier –

“if she thinks she’s going to perform nonsense like that, she can think again!”

| Hywel finds some keys |
 |
| "You can't just let yourself in" |
“You can’t just let yourself in without warning,” he tells her, but she points out to him that it is her house.
 |
| "This house is in a mess" |
She is wearing rubber gloves as she is cleaning up the house, which she describes as a mess;
 |
| "I'm a single parent" |
“Look, I’m a single parent trying to raise a daughter on my own, which is not easy,” he reminds her.
 |
| "It doesn't take five minutes to clear away breakfast plates" |
She complains that it does not take five minutes to clear away breakfast plates, and recommends that he could vacuum now and again. “I’ve put a list on the fridge of the things that need doing –

| "I've moved back in!" |
“and now I’m going for a bath. And in case it isn’t obvious, I’ve moved back in!”
