"We have to stick together where the children are concerned"

Dani and Garry are just arriving back from the nursery;  she thanks him for coming with her, and he replies, “We have to stick together where the children are concerned.”

"Teachers make me nervous"

Dani says that teachers make her nervous, as if she has done something wrong – and nursery teachers are the worst.

"At least they're happier with Seren's behaviour now"

“At least, they’re happier with Seren’s behaviour now,” he says, and she has even been awarded a ‘star pupil’ certificate.

"See you again this evening, Garry"

Dani is in a much better mood, and will see Garry again this evening.

Dylan is watching

At the end of the street, Dylan is peering round the corner, as Garry walks away, smiling.

Hywel is working on the laptop

At Y Felin, Hywel is working on the laptop when Gaynor arrives back from school;

"Ive managed to find the perfect present"

“Right, I think I’ve managed to find the perfect birthday present for Izzy,” she announces, and displays something resembling a pendant.

"That looks expensive"

Hywel remarks that it appears expensive, and Gaynor agrees;  “But there we go, you’re only 30 once,” she says.   He is surprised that she wants to give her daughter such an expensive gift after the way she has treated her mother lately.

"If i make a fuss of her, she'll forget about it"

“If I make a big enough fuss of her on her birthday, she’ll forget all about that,” Gaynor predicts.

"She said I'm as bag as Macs!"

It appears that the matter has been preying on Hywel’s mind;  “She said I’m as bad as Macs!”

"She said it in anger"

Gaynor points so that Izzy said it in anger, but he continues, “These days, if I had an affair with a schoolgirl, and married her, what I did with Stacey, I’d be in jail!”

She replies that times have changed, and he would not say or do the same things today.

"What Macs did was worse"

Hywel stresses, “What Max did was worse than what I did – and he’s not in jail.”

"It's me she's trying to punish!"

“Don’t take any notice of her – it’s me she’s trying to punish!” Gaynor tells him, “I’m going to see her – she can punish me,

"It's not fair to drag you into it!"

“but it’s not fair to drag you into it!”   Hywel cannot dissuade her, and off she goes.

Tesni has already be interviewed

In the Deri, the interview panel, consisting of Mathew and Eifion, have already spoken to one applicant;  “Tesni did well, didn’t she – but do you want an ex working with you?” Eifion wonders,

"I can be professional"

and Mathew replies that if she can do the job, he can be professional.

The second candidate approaches

“Good, because the other choice is your girlfriend,” Eifion sneers, and at that moment she approaches.   He greets her, “Good afternoon – thanks for coming.”   Izzy can see that they are going to be formal;

"Don't worry, Ms Evans, we don't bite!"

“Oh yes, but don’t worry, Ms Evans, we don’t bite!” he says.

"You haven't been here all day, Mam?"

Mark returns home to find his mother slumped on the sofa;  “You haven’t been here all day, have you, Mam?” he says, but receives no reply.

"Why don't you use some posh bubble bath?"

“I don’t like seeing you like this – why don’t you go for a warm bath – use some of that posh bubble bath.

"I'll make something to eat"

“I’ll make us a cup of tea and something to eat.”

Finally, Kath turns towards him

"Go away, Mark – get out of my sight!"

and tells him, “Go away, Mark – get out of my sight!”

He makes himself scarce

so he complies with her request and goes upstairs.

"You can see I have plenty of experience"

Summing up her qualifications, Izzy says that she has plenty of experience and skill.   Mathew does not think they have any further questions,

"Can you explain why you left your last job?"

but Eifion decides that he has;  “Can you explain why you left your last job?”

"I wanted to challenge myself"

She explains that she did a lot of work for Yr Antur;  “I increased numbers and developed sustainable strategies and systems – but I wanted to challenge myself and learn new skills in a different field.”

"Do you consider yourself an honest person?"

Then there is another question, whether she would consider herself an honest person;  “Would you?” Izzy asks in return, but he points out he is not the one answering the questions.

She cleverly sidesteps the question . . .

“I know, but I think a person reflects their strengths and weaknesses in other people,” she informs him, “So if you consider yourself an honest person, I probably do, too.”

. . . and Mathew brings the interview to a close

At this point Mathew winds up the interview, and will be in touch with her;  she thanks them for their time and leaves.

"What's wrong with you, Eifion?"

“What’s wrong with you?” Mathew demands, “We know her – she’s Izzy.”

"I was trying to be neutral and fair"

Eifion maintains that he was trying to be neutral and fair.

"We're going to offer the job to her!"

Mathew is definite, “Izzy is the best candidate we’ve had – I’m the boss, and we’ve decided that we’re going to offer the job to Izzy.”

Mark delivers a box to Iolo

Mark calls with a delivery for number 7, a parcel for which Iolo has been anxiously waiting, but when Mark enquires as to its contents,

"Mind your own business!"

he is told, “Mind your own business!”

He starts opening the box

Excitedly, Iolo sets about opening the box.

Brynmor looks downhearted

Brynmor is sitting glumly at the bar and Cassie comments, “The whisky obviously isnt cheering you up!   Do you want to talk about it?”

"You don't want to listen to my problems"

He replies that she does not want to listen to his problems, but she reports that it is part of her job;

"I assume Kath Jones is the cause of this?"

“I assume Kath Jones is the cause of this?”

"It's that obvious, is it?"

“It’s that obvious, is it?” he groans,

"It will be easier to get over it"

so she tells him to be grateful that it ended suddenly – it will be easier to get over.

"What if I don't want to get over it?"

As he sits down again at the bar, he asks, “What if I don’t want to get over it?”

She assures him that he is a handsome, sensitive man and has a lot to offer to the right woman.   “Yes, but Kath Jones is the right woman!” he replies.   Cassie points out that if that were true, she would be sitting next to him now.

"I felt like I was coming between her and Mark"

“I felt like I was coming between her and Mark – and he means the world to her,” Brynmor continues, but Cassie emphasises that Mark is well able to look after himself.   “He was only looking out for his mother, and I respect that,” says Brynmor.

Cassie abandons her post at the Deri

Cassie decides she wants to pop out for five minutes, and leaves the pub completely unstaffed, (surely something which Garry would frown upon) and Brynmor is left alone in the establishment.

Gaynor finally discovers Izzy

Gaynor is pressing the buzzer at the door of the shop flat, but receives no answer, as Izzy is just approaching after her interview.   “I’ve been looking for you,” says Gaynor, “You weren’t answering your phone –

"Hywel isn't to blame for what happened to you"

“listen, Hywel isn’t to blame for what happened to you, all right?   You said he was as bad as Macs!”

Izzy starts to explain what she meant,

"I'm not discussing it here!"

but then decides she is not discussing it there, and she will not admit her mother to the flat until Mathew is there,

"It's you I want to talk to – not Mathew"

something to which Gaynor objects.   “Phone me when it’s convenient,” says her mother

Off goes Gaynor in a huff

and stalks off.

"I hope you feel better than you look"

Cassie has gone to Maes-y-Deri, (surely much more than a five-minute journey there and back) and hopes that Kath feels better than she looks.   “Right, out with it – what’s happening with Brynmor?”

"The whole village are gossiping, aren't they?"

Kath suspects that the whole village is gossiping, but is assured that is not the case.

"He couldn't handle us Joneses – too much baggage!"

“Well, it’s over – that’s it!” Kath informs her, “He couldn’t handle us Joneses – too much baggage!”

"Baggage makes someone interesting"

Cassie considers that some baggage makes someone more interesting.   “Well, it’s obvious that my baggage isn’t very interesting to Brynmor,” Kath growls.

"Brynmor is head over heels in love with you!"

Cassie spells it out, “Listen, Kath – Brynmor is head over heels in love with you.   Listen to someone who knows – you don’t want him to disappear from your life because you’re not brave enough to see that he adores you!

"Get off that sofa and get dressed!"

“Get off that sofa, have a wash and get dressed!”

"Mark, I want a word with you, too!"

Mark has just come downstairs, and she also shouts at him, “Mark, I want a word with you, too!”

The contents of Iolo's box

Siôn visits number 7, where Iolo seems in high spirits, and explains to his father that the box contains a couple of vitamins and things;

"You can't put a price on your health!"

“You can’t put a price on your health,” he says, “I’ve been doing some reading – on top of the yoga, the meditation and the breathing Colin told me about, I’ve found some natural things that can help.”

Siôn is sceptical

Siôn looks sceptical about this, so he is invited to stay for a cup of tea, and Iolo will explain;

"I only have green tea"

“But I have only have green tea.”   Siôn will drink anything as long as there is plenty of milk in it, that is told that there is no milk, either;

"I don't drink milk any more – hormones"

“I don’t drink it any more – hormones!”

"Did the doctor tell you that?"

“Did you read that as well – or did the doctor tell you?” asks his father, and is informed that it is on the website;  he can have a look for himself  now.

"Great!"

“Great!” mutters Siôn.

"Sorry about Eifion's awkward questions"

Mathew is arranging flowers when Izzy returns to the flat later, and he apologises for Eifion’s awkward questions earlier;

"I can handle him"

“I can handle him – don’t worry,” she replies.   He confirms that she was the best candidate they saw

"I'm offering you the job"

and therefore he is offering her the job.   She is quite surprised as he presents her with the flowers, but the excitement is short lived, as her mother arrives.

"I'm glad you're here, Mathew"

“I’m glad you’re here, Mathew,” she begins, and he confirms that he is staying there to support Izzy.   “Ganging up on me, are you?” says Gaynor, then starts her prepared speech,

"I'm trying to process what you said to Hywel and me"

“I won’t waste any time – I’m trying to process what you said to Hywel and me, and I acknowledge that what happened with Macs had an effect on you psychologically.   I didn’t realise that at the time, but I do realise it now,  and it’s important that you hear that.

"Hywel doesn't carry any blame, all right?"

“But Hywel doesn’t carry any blame, all right?   That’s all I wanted to say.”

"I was expecting an apology"

Izzy is extremely disappointed;  “That’s it?   I was expecting an apology, perhaps – for supporting Macs rather than me!”

"I do acknowledge those feelings"

Gaynor adds, “I understand that you’re angry, and I do acknowledge those feelings.”

"You sound like a self-help book"

Izzy says that she sounds like a ‘self-help’ book, and Gaynor regards it as the first step in repairing their relationship.

"You don't understand at all!"

“You haven’t understood at all – we can’t move on until you apologise,” Izzy rages,

"Why don't we agree to disagree?"

so her mother suggests that they should to agree to disagree.   “It doesn’t work like that!” Izzy shouts,

"That's enough for one night, Gaynor"

and Mathew thinks that is enough for one night;

"Good night, Mam"

Izzy bids her mother good night,

Off she storms again

and she storms, ill-tempered, out of the flat.   Mathew and Izzy look at each other.

"Why am I here, Cassie?"

After what must have been considerably more than five minutes, but there is still no sign of any more customers, Cassie arrives back at the Deri, accompanied by Mark.   He cannot understand why he is there, so she explains, “To make your mother happy – if you succeed, you’ll have the house to yourself for a while.”

"It's over, so leave me in peace"

Brynmor says, “Listen, Mark – it’s over, so leave me to drink this in peace.”

"I had no right to interfere"

Mark advises that he wanted to apologise, as he had no right to interfere, or to go through Brynmor’s things.

Brynmor understands that he was just looking after his mother;

"I'm glad you did because she's a very special lady"

“And I’m glad you do, because she’s a very special lady.”   After some prompting from Cassie, Mark suggests that he should come up to the house, but Brynmor considers that to be a bad idea.

Cassie has a way of solving the problem

Cassie intervenes, but he insists that he does not want to come between Mark and his mother, neither does he want to be in the way;  “We have a way of solving the problem – so listen to what we’re proposing,” Cassie tells him.

Hywel appears to be preparing the meal

Hywel is delving into the freezer when Gaynor returns to Llwyncelyn,

"She didn't want to listen to me!"

grumbling, “She didn’t want to listen to me – I’m finding the receipt – she doesn’t deserve a gift!”

Hywel asks what Izzy said,

"She wants me to apologise for what Macs did!"

and is told, “She wants me to apologise to her for what Macs did!   She can have a card and nothing more!

"If she thinks I'm going to waste my money . . ."

“If she thinks I’m going to waste my money celebrating her birthday, she can think again!”

"I didn't get a chance with Aled, did I?"

In the Deri flat, Dylan tells Dani that he wants to be there for her and the baby, “Because I didn’t get a chance with Aled, did I?”

"You don't want to miss out"

She can appreciate that he does not want to miss out again, but he goes on, “It’s more than that –

"I'm here for you and the baby every step of the way"

“I want you and the baby to know that I’m here for you every step of the way.   I’ve started planning already . . .”

Garry comes in, looking for a book

At this moment Garry, who has been settling Seren, comes in, as Dylan continues, “I’ve found the ‘Orbit Hybrid Travel System’,” but she does not seem to be listening.   Garry is looking for the book ‘Twm Sion Bolgi’, [Welsh adaptation of ‘The Highway Rat’] and reports that Seren is much happier tonight.

"Well, she hasn't bitten anyone else"

Dani sighs with relief that she has not bitten anyone else, but cannot find the book;  she reminds Garry that he should know it off by heart by now.

"I steal everything I fancy!"

“I steal everything I fancy!” he recites.

"And I eat everything I steal!"

Dani follows this with, “And I eat everything I steal!”   He decides to tell the story without the book, but Dani thinks that Seren will know that he is making it up.

Dylan is out of his depth here

Dylan, who is feeling very left out,

"Orbit – cot, pram – what is it?"

is asked by Dani, “Orbit – cot, pram – what is it?”

"I'll forward a link to you"

and he dejectedly says that he will forward a link to her.

"I'll ring you back, Cassie"

Mark arrives at Maes-y-Deri, together with Brynmor, just as Kath is speaking to Cassie on the phone;  then she turns and sees Brynmor there, and will speak to Cassie later.

"Have you left something behind?"

Kath wonders if he has left something behind, and he informs her that he has;

"Yes - you!"

“You!   I had started to think that I was in the way.”

"You weren't in the way"

She assures him that he was not;  “Well, if you’re willing to forgive me for walking out, I’ve organised a surprise for you.”

She says that she loves surprises,

"How about a trip to London to see Stacey?"

and he explains that it is a trip to London to see Stacey;  “Just a couple of days – see some of the sights, a show, perhaps, nice food.   What do you say?”

"I'd love to go!"

She would love to go with him,

"Well, go and pack, then"

so he tells her to go and pack.

This 'Orbit' system is eye-wateringly expensive

Dani notices that the baby stuff costs a fortune, but Dylan insists that it is worth every penny to keep their baby safe.

"I was brilliant, even without the book"

Garry returns, once again reporting that Seren is sound asleep, and that he was brilliant, even without the book.

Dylan rater coincidentally find the book

Then Dylan finds the book in question, stuffed down the side of the sofa.

Garry will see Dani tomorrow,

"I'm looking forward to reading stories to my baby"

and Dylan says he is looking forward to reading stories to his baby.

"It's never too early to start"

“It’s never too early to start,” Garry remarks, “I’m surprised you didn’t find in the research when you were looking for travel systems –

"Its important for the baby to hear its parents' voices"

“they say it’s important for the baby to hear its parents voices, even in the womb, don’t they, Dan?”

"That's right, Garry"

and she agrees.

"I sang to Seren – perhaps you should try it""

“I read stories to Seren and I sang to her!” [on 11 July 2017] Garry recalls, “Perhaps you should try it now, before it’s too late!”

"Are you ready, Dani?"

Dylan stands up and asks if Dani is ready.

Garry is laughing . . .

As both Garry

. . . and Dani tries to stop herself doing so

and Dani look on with great amusement, he begins, “Twm Siôn Bolgi – have you heard the story of Twm Siôn Bolgi?”

"It's important I should control the things I can"

At number 7, Iolo points out that it is important he should control the things he can, and Tyler adds that research shows that alternative treatments can help.

"Hand in hand with conventional medicine"

Siôn insists that they should be hand-in-hand with conventional medicine.

“It’s my health and my decision,” Iolo emphasises, but his father urges him to consider the implications, worried that he is exchanging one obsession for another.

“You were arranging your funeral last week,”

"Now I'm taking control, and that's not good enough, either"

and Iolo reminds him that everyone criticised him for being negative – but now he is taking control, and that is not good enough, either.

“From where I’m standing, I can’t win!” he rages,

Iolo rushes upstairs

and escapes upstairs.

"Rather than how much a coffin costs?"

Tyler suggests to Siôn, “Isn’t it better that he is researching yoga and turmeric, rather than how much a coffin costs?”
