"There's a pack of dogs at Deri Fawr!"

DJ is sitting at the table in Penrhewl and Sioned has just made him a cup of tea when there is a knock at the door and Mark comes in with the post.   Mark asks if he can leave the post for Deri Fawr with them;  “There’s a pack of dogs up there and they can smell a postman’s blood!”

"Dogs?"

Sioned is surprised by this

"Bill Gelligam's hunting dogs"

and her mother explains, “Bill Gelligam’s hunting dogs – he’s retired and sold them.”   Sioned imagines that this is another of Howard’s tricks, but is informed that Howard is simply looking after them.

“Yeah – looking after them for who?” demands Sioned,

"Who would be stupid enough to buy hunting dogs?"

while DJ wonders who would be stupid enough to buy hunting dogs.

"Me!"

They are both completely taken aback when Eileen reveals that it is her.

"Are you in a better mood?"

Cheryl comes into the pharmacy, where Gaynor is studying something on the laptop;  “Are you in a better mood than you were at breakfast time?” Cheryl asks, but Gaynor replies that she is just tired.

"The chicken wasn't cooked properly"

“Are you ill?” Cheryl anxiously enquires, “Good, because I don’t think the chicken I made last night was cooked properly,” as she selects a packet of tablets which she hopes will sort her out and for which she is charged £3.20.

Gaynor is looking at the Sexual Health Clinic website

Then Gaynor resumes her studies on the laptop and we see that she is investigating the Sexual Health Website.

"Sorry – I wasn't . . ."

Maya silently approaches and Gaynor seems rather awkward.

"It's very common these days . . ."

“Sorry, it’s none of my business,” Maya is quick to point out, “Are you worried?   Lots of infections are treatable these days – just so you know.   And it’s very common – STIs are on the rise in older people –

". . . not that you're old, of course"

“not that you’re old, of course.   If you are concerned, it’s always better to tackle these things head-on.   Do you need help?”

"Good morning, can I help you?"

However, just then their conversation is interrupted by the arrival of a customer, but we do not see who it is.

Mark ambles along the High Street . . .

Mark walks along the street

. . . when he hears a wolf-whistle

and is wolf-whistled by Cheryl, who is sitting on the bench by the alley;  he warns that she should not be doing that as he is on duty.

"Do you have any plans for tonight?"

“Have you got a minute?” she asks, “Do you have any plans for tonight – I’m cooking a special dinner – do you fancy coming over?”

He replies that it depends what is on the menu,

"Just you wait and you'll find out!"

so she tells him, “Cheek!   Just wait and you’ll find out!”

"Will Gaynor be there?"

He wonders whether Gaynor will be there, and she maintains, “I can arrange to have the house to ourselves.”   He will bring over a couple of cans, and Cheryl is looking forward to it.

Eileen has it all worked out

Sioned is vehemently protesting, “Mam you can’t just start a new hunt!”  Eileen answers that of course she can – as a business, charging a membership fee and holding hunts on Penrhewl’s land – using the dogs.

"Each one has its own character"

“Ah, each one has its own character – I can’t wait to have them here,” she enthuses;

"How long have you been interested in hunting?"

DJ wonders how long she has been interested in hunting.   “Since always – as a woman from the countryside – and I’m very proud of having these dogs – the breed goes back years.”

"It's a drag hunt"

DJ imagines that it is illegal, but is informed that it will be a drag hunt;  “The dogs will follow a piece of cloth that smells like a fox – but if a fox or two are killed in the process, well . . .”

"Mam!"

This has the desired effect of making Sioned angry, but her mother points out she was only joking.

DJ stresses that keeping hunting dogs is hard work,

"Howard is going to help me"

so is told, “Howard is going to help me – it won’t mean any extra work for you.”

"You're not letting him anywhere near this place!"

“You’re not letting him anywhere near this place!” insists Sioned,

"It was Howard's idea in the first place"

but her mother points out it was Howard’s idea in the first place.   That is considered very unwise by DJ, considering his track record with dogs.

"They took advantage of the boy"

Eileen emphasises that he has been punished;  “The other people, worse than him, took advantage of the boy!”

"And all this without consulting us!"

Now Sioned takes issue with the fact that this has all been arranged without consulting her or DJ.

"After the disappointment of the chicken shed"

“Unlike you, Howard is supporting me after the disappointment of the chicken shed,” Eileen tells her’

"Here we go – the victim again!"

“Oh, here we go – the victim again!” sneers Sioned.   Eileen expected her to be more grateful as she is starting this enterprise for Sioned and Huwi-John.

"You may as well accept it!"

“So you may as well accept it – because it’s happening!” she snarls.

"Yes, one o'clock tomorrow"

In the pharmacy, Gaynor is now on the phone to the Sexual Health Clinic, where she has an appointment at one o’clock tomorrow;

"Your partner should have a test"

Maya reminds her that it is important for her partner to also have a test, but Gaynor is of the opinion that he should sort that out for himself.   She is advised not to take any chances.

"Can I include my partner as well?"

Gaynor resumes the phone call and would like to include her partner as well.   “There – that wasn’t so hard, was it?” says Maya.

"Yes, that's the responsible thing to do"

Gaynor realises that was the responsible thing to do;  she is assured that everything will be OK,

"Can I speak to the pharmacist?"

but at that very moment, Mark comes into the pharmacy, needing to speak to the pharmacist.

"These little blue tablets . . ."

“Er, these little blue tablets . . .” he hesitantly begins,

". . . I've used them before"

“I’ve used them before – I have an enlarged prostate.”

"Just a questionnaire first"

Maya needs him to fill in a questionnaire first and then she will supply the necessary.

Gaynor is listening carefully

Gaynor has been listening to this conversation from the back room and seems concerned.

"Eileen wants me to pop over . . ."

At Bryntirion, Jason has a message from Eileen;  “She wants me to pop over to Penrhewl,” he tells Kelly, who wonders what she wants.

". . . perhaps she's forgotten about your protest"

“Perhaps she’s forgotten about your protest against the chickens and actually wants to offer me some work.”

“You never know,” replies Kelly, “Good builders are like gold dust.”

"Keep your voices down!"

Diane is on a Zoom council meeting with her laptop and urges than to keep their voices down.

"She might be offering Jason a job"

“Eileen might be offering a job to Jason.” says Kelly and his mother advises him to be careful,

"Probably going ahead without permission"

as she might be going ahead with the chicken shed without permission.

"Farmers are a law unto themselves!"

Jason protests that he is not that stupid, but Kelly is evaluation is that, “Farmers are a law unto themselves!   Don’t let her pressurise you into anything.”

"Right-oh, boss"

He thanks the ‘boss’ for her instructions and is about to leave the house

"Give my regards to Eileen"

as she adds, “And give my regards to Eileen!”

"OK – will do!"

He agrees to do that.

"Don't sign any contract"

“Don’t sign any contract until I find out through the council what’s going on up there,” Diane warns him.

"I'm a big boy now, Mam!"

He protests that she is interfering and reminds her that he is a big boy now.

Mark arrives in the Deri

Mark comes into the Deri and is followed by Gaynor, who is anxious to talk to him;

"What's you game?   Buying those tablets?"

“What’s your game?   Buying those tablets earlier?” she demands, “I could see you.”   He answers that he is doing nothing wrong,

"That means you intend to . . . you know"

and she goes on, “That means you intend to . . . you know.   Right, there’s something we need to discuss.”

"You never wanted to discuss it again"

Mark reminds her that she never wanted to discuss what happened between them, but just as Gaynor is about to explain,

"Can I borrow Gaynor?"

Cheryl arrives, asking if she can borrow Gaynor for a moment.

"One-on-one time with Mark"

“Listen, I need a little favour from you – would you mind being out of the house tonight?  Please – so that I can have some one-on-one time with Mark – if you know what I mean?”

Gaynor seems lost for words

She does not wait for any reply from her sister, but thanks her for her co-operation.   Gaynor is left looking horrified.

A lovely November day at Penrhewl

In the sunshine outside Penrhewl,

"That thug will be here all the time"

DJ mutters to Sioned, “If we don’t put a stop to this ridiculous idea, that thug will be here all the time.   I’d like to know what he’s done to get into her good books.”

Very hardy roses in that part of Carmarthenshire

Sioned is inclined to find out what her plans are first, then they can make a decision;  they join Eileen and Howard, passing the display of very late-flowering roses.

"Howard suggests . . ."

“Howard suggests that we adapt the shed near the lower field,” Eileen tells them.

"Hunting dogs can be noisy"

Howard explains, “Hunting dogs can be noisy, especially at feeding time.”

"You haven't got the skills"

DJ does not consider that he has got the skills to build kennels.   Then the APD van comes into the farmyard;  “Here’s a bloke who can build some,” says Howard.

"What's this – a board meeting?"

“What’s this, then?” asks Jason, “Board meeting, is it?”

"I want you to adapt a shed into 20 kennels"

He is told that Eileen wants him to adapt one of the sheds into kennels for 20 hunting dogs.

"Why do you want to keep hunting dogs?"

“Why do you want to keep hunting dogs?” Jason wonders,

"I've been asking exactly the same thing"

and DJ says that he has been asking exactly the same thing.

Eileen dismisses this, simply stating that she wants the job done quickly, within a month.   Jason replies that they will have to discuss the plans in detail first.

"You don't have a problem working with Howard, do you?"

“Howard can give you all the details,” say Eileen, “You don’t have a problem working with him, do you?   If you do, I’ll have to find another builder.”

"Right, thank you very much"

Diane has been carrying out some investigations and is on the phone, thanking someone for their information;  she goes to tell Kelly what do she has found out.

"You're not going to like this, Kelly"

“You’re not going to like this – according to the planning department,

"She's adapting a shed into kennels"

Eileen has checked if she needs permission to adapt a shed into kennels.”

"That's not a big deal, is it?"

Kelly does not consider that a big deal, until she is told that it will be for 20 hunting dogs,

"Foxhounds"

otherwise known as foxhounds.   Then Kelly squeals, “What?   To hunt?”   Diane imagines that it may be to breed, but the person she spoke to did not think that Eileen needed permission.

"And she wants Jason to build the kennels!"

Kelly knows what is coming next;  “And she wants Jason to build the kennels!

"Yeah, well – he wouldn't do that . . ."

“Yeah, well – he wouldn’t do that . . .”   After a long pause,

". . . would he?"

she adds, “. . . would he?”

Howard's scruffy kennel specification

Howard has provided Jason with a very rough sketch of what he had in mind;

"Are the cages made of wood?"

“Are the cages made of wood?” Jason asks, but is told that the dogs would bite wood.   Iron would be needed, with mesh and blocks.

"What you want is a steel fabricator, Howard"

“What you want is a steel fabricator, then, Howard – we don’t have anyone who can weld – we’re builders, you see.”

"You're the expert on dogs, I suppose"

Howard points out that the walls need to be built, and they are made of blocks.   “There we are, then – you’re the expert on dogs, I suppose,” Jason concludes.

Howard insists that they have to work together,

"I'll need the correct measurements first"

and Jason will work out a price for Eileen pretty quickly, but he will need the correct measurements first.   “The picture is very good, but we need to know the size of the things before we can work out how much they’ll cost.”

"Well, don't cut corners!"

Eileen warns him not to cut corners, as she wants everything tip-top.   As the three of them walk off in different directions,

"I don't think we'll change her mind"

DJ comments, “I don’t think we’re going to change her mind.”

"If it's all legit, we shouldn't try"

Sioned maintains that if it is all legit, they should not try.

Gaynor is watching tv . . .

Gaynor is watching the television in Maes-y-Deri when she hears Cheryl  and Mark come in;

. . . but quickly tries to look ill

she quickly turns it off and lies down, trying to look ill.   “I only misbehave when I go to Rhos,” Cheryl tells Mark

"Oh – Gaynor"

and then they discover that they are not alone.

"I think you were right about the chicken"

Gaynor groans, “You know what?   I think you were right about that chicken – my stomach feels terrible.”

"You should go to bed"

Cheryl recommends that she ought to go to bed,

"Or how about some fresh air?"

but Mark suggests some fresh air.

“I feel terrible about spoiling your night,” Gaynor continues and when Cheryl again advises her to go upstairs, as she is cooking him dinner,

"Do you think that's a good idea?"

Gaynor asks Mark, “Do you think that’s a good idea?”

"I'm doing the cooking and that's that!"

Cheryl is determined that as she has been looking forward to tonight, she is doing the cooking and that is that;  “Come on, Mark, you can peel the potatoes!”

"A complete ban on all forms of hunting"

DJ is doing some research and reads out to Sioned, “Activists call for a complete ban on all forms of hunting.”

"What's the problem with a drag hunt?"

She cannot understand what the problem is with a drag hunt, and insists that, as her mother has made her decision, there is no point in trying to talk sense into her.

"Perhaps we should tell her straight"

DJ proposes, “It might be easier to tell her straight that it’s a mistake.”

"She could change her mind about transferring the place to me!"

“If we make her angry, she could change her mind about transferring this place to me!” exclaims Sioned, “Having to suffer a few hunting dogs around the place is a small price to pay.”

"Who knows how much trouble this will cause?"

“But who knows how much trouble this drag hunting will cause?” asks DJ, “Do you know anything about it?”

"Mam said it was all legal"

All that Sioned knows is that her mother said it was legal, and that is all that matters.

"That's hard to believe with Howard involved"

“I find that very hard to believe with Howard involved – and what does he get out of it?”

"Or I'll feed him to the dogs"

They agree that they will have to keep tabs on him;  “Or I’ll feed him to the dogs!” she threatens.

"I don't think dogs will eat rubbish"

DJ does not think that dogs will eat rubbish.

"At least it was cooked through"

As they are doing the washing-up after dinner, Cheryl and Mark joke with each other, while Gaynor, looking thoroughly disinterested, sits on the sofa.   “At least it was cooked through,” Cheryl stresses.

"Can I have a bottle of water?"

Gaynor asks for a bottle of water and as Cheryl is just taking the food bin outside, Mark takes it to her.

"You're going out off your way to spoil our fun!"

“You’re going out of your way to spoil our fun!” he complains, “And I’m starting to get fed up!”

"You can't sleep with her – all right?"

Gaynor stipulates, “You can’t sleep with her – all right?” but he replies that he really likes her, as is not going to let Gaynor come between them.

"Yes, of course it was!"

“What happened between us was a mistake, right?” and she wholeheartedly agrees with that.   Just as she is about to tell him about the appointment, Cheryl calls him away.

"I think you'll have to go home tonight"

In the kitchen she tells him, “I’m really sorry about this, but I think you’ll have to go home tonight – she needs a good night’s sleep.”

"She's just trying to come between us"

He tries to point out that Gaynor is not really ill, but is trying to come between them, but Cheryl cannot believe that she would do that.   “Sorry Mark – but we’ll do it another time, I promise.”

"Hope you get well soon!"

He announces to Gaynor that he is leaving and sarcastically hopes that she gets well soon.

"Just you and me tonight, sis"

“Well, just you and me tonight, sis,” says Cheryl.

Gaynor appears very pleased

Gaynor looks pleased with herself and her sister wonders why that is.

Sioned is ironing

Sioned is doing the ironing at Penrhewl and DJ comments that her mother is not home yet;

"She's obviously enjoying herself at Deri Fawr"

“She’s obviously enjoying herself at Deri Fawr with Howard.”

“I think we should start keeping tabs on your mother, too And not just Howard,” he suggests, “I’m just starting to think she belongs to the old way of running things – it doesn’t matter if you break the odd rule – or the odd law, either.”

"She wouldn't risk the business"

Sioned does not think that her mother would risk the business,

"She has been a loose cannon recently"

but he points out, “Your mother has been a loose cannon recently.”

Sioned accuses him of overthinking things,

"Diane says she gave someone a backhander"

but he goes on, “Diane told me that she broke the rules with this chicken shed application and gave someone a backhander,” but it is not known who it went to.

"Did she?"

This angers Sioned and he explains that, considering that the application was rejected,

"I didn't think it was worth mentioning"

he did not see the point of mentioning it;

"Now can you see why I'm worried?"

“Now can you see why I’m worried?”

"Who's that at the door?"

Back home at number 7, Mark is surprised by a knock at the back door;

It is Gaynor

he discovers that it is Gaynor,

"We've been so irresponsible!"

who immediately complains, “I can’t believe the situation – we’ve been so irresponsible!”

"That's why we have to move forward"

Mark insists that they have to try and move forward.

"I've booked us an appointment at the clinic"

“Yes, I know, that’s why I’ve booked us an appointment, tomorrow, at the clinic,” she replies.   He is angry that she suspect him of being infected, but she insists that neither of them know.

"You haven't caught anything from me!"

“Listen, you haven’t caught anything from me!” he snarls, but she is adamant there is no point arguing, as he is having the test.   “I’ll go if I have a problem!” he snaps, and she finds discussing this rather indelicate subject problematical.

"Please, Mark – for Cheryl's sake!"

She hands him a slip of paper with the time;  “Please, Mark – for Cheryl’s sake!” she encourages him

"Oh – OK, then"

and he finally agrees.   Gaynor makes a quick exit through the back door.

"You don't know what she wants to do with the dogs?"

At Bryntirion, Kelly asks, “But you’re none the wiser what she wants to do with the dogs?”

"There is one little 'red flag' – Howard's back in there!"

Jason reminds her that it is not his place to ask;  he is simply the builder, but there is one little ‘red flag’;  “Howard’s back in there!   I’m not happy about it either – but I can handle Howard, don’t you worry.”

"Don't get involved, Jase"

She urges him not to get involved, but he cannot afford to turn down work;  “There’s no chicken shed now, remember?” he replies, as they sit down on the sofa.

"She appears to be doing everything legally"

He notices that his mother is very quiet and she remarks, “Councillors who listen before opening their mouths are a rare breed.   I don’t oppose this plan – she appears to be doing everything legally.”

"Kelly, support me, please . . ."

Jason regards that as confirmation he is doing the right thing, and pleads with Kelly to support him;

". . . I need this job"

he needs to accept this job.

"If I'm not happy, I'll have to object!"

“Fine,” she says, “But if I’m not happy, I’ll have to object!   There we are, if this job isn’t dodgy, you’ve got nothing to worry about, have you?”

There may be trouble ahead

Both Jason and his mother can see trouble looming.
