23 March 2021 (2nd)

Rhys and Mathew arrive at Bryntirion

Next morning, Jason opens the door of Bryntirion to Rhys and Mathew, and comments, “I don’t want to know what you did to DJ last night!”   Mathew points out that he was in bed by ten o’clock,

"He's not in any of the beds here!"

but Jason wonders, “Whose bed?   Because he’s not in any of the beds here!   I went in to say good luck ten minutes ago and there’s no sign of him anywhere.”

"Come on – what do you know, Math?"

Mathew looks very worried, and Jason demands that he tells them what is troubling him;

"Perhaps things are not over between him and Non"

“He’s been seeing Non for a while – perhaps things are not quite over between them,” Mathew reveals.   Jason refers to him as a sly old fox,

"I'm going to kill him!"

and Mathew growls, “I'm going to kill him!”

Sioned is pleased with her hair

At Penrhewl, Sioned is doing her nails and is told by her mother that she looks lovely;  “Mandy’s done a good job on my hair – simple but effective,” says Sioned.

She has a present from DJ

She has a present from DJ, a photograph of the farm;  “He got his friend from Llanarthur to help him frame it.”

"The farmer wants a wife"

Eileen is looking rather doubtful as Sioned reads the card which was with the photograph;  “The farmer wants a wife!   And I can’t wait to be your husband.   Enjoy the day, lots of love, DJ.”

"Let's make it a full breakfast"

Her mother suggests that she will make a little breakfast, but Sioned would prefer it to be a full breakfast.

"The last time you did this, Sioned . . ."

“The last time you did this, you couldn’t face eating anything,” Eileen recalls.

"I should have cancelled that wedding"

Sioned acknowledges she should have cancelled that wedding, instead of pretending everything was all right with Ed;  “But its completely different this time, Mam!” she emphasises, “Today’s going to be a perfect day – I just know it!”

Mathew can get no reply from DJ

Mathew is frantically trying to contact DJ, who at that minute arrives through the front door;

"Is that you phoning me again?"

“Is that you phoning me again?” he demands, “Sioned hasn’t cancelled, has she?”

"Why didn't you answer your phone?"

Mathew wants to know where he has been;  “My suit was too small,” he replies, and Jason asks why he did not answer his phone.

"Because I was driving, wasn't I?"

“Because I was driving, wasn’t I?” growls DJ.

"He thought you were still dabbling with Non"

“He thought you’d cancelled because you’re still dabbling with Non!” Jason informs him,

"That was a mistake, and it's over now!"

but he emphasises that was a mistake which is now over.   He is urged to get a move on, and next time to leave a message.   DJ directs him to a post-it note, rather unobtrusively fixed to a packet of cereal,

"What a stupid place to leave a note!"

and is told that was a stupid place to leave it.

DJ advises Jason to forget anything he has heard about Non;  “I’m the luckiest bloke in the world!”   Jason is now returning to the village, and Mathew glowers at DJ.

"There's plenty of room for some cake later"

Having finished her breakfast, Eileen tells Sioned that she will be fine now until her honeymoon, but the reply is, “There’s plenty of room for some cake later.”

The sight of Sioned renders Gerwyn speechless

Then Gerwyn comes in and is rather taken with Sioned’s beauty;  he is preparing the ribbons on the wedding car, and recommends that she had better wear more than a dressing gown later.

"We're waiting for Auntie Iona"

Eileen explains that they will be about half an hour;  they are waiting for Auntie Iona to pick up Huwi-John.

"It's time I got dressed"

Sioned thinks that it is about time for her to get dressed, but before she goes, her mother has something for her;

Eileen has a family heirloom for her

“Denzil’s mother gave it to me when we got married – I don’t know why I didn’t give it to you last time.   But DJ is special, isn’t he?

"Your Dad would be proud of you"

“Your Dad would be very proud of you, you know.

"Thank you, Mam"

“Go and get changed – you don’t want to be late.

Evidently Non has not disappeared yet

The back door at Bryntirion opens and Non creeps in, anticipating that no-one would be there, but Mathew comes thundering downstairs, shouting, “Come on, DJ – we’re late!”   Then he remembers the rings, and in his search for them comes across her.

"Get out!   DJ's made his decision!"

“What on earth are you doing here?” he demands, “Get out – DJ’s made his decision!”   She just wanted to leave him something, but Mathew snarls, “What is it – a love letter?”

DJ is surprised to see her

DJ comes in and Mathew apologises for her presence, pointing out that she slipped in through the back door.

"We're already late, DJ"

DJ would like a few minutes alone with Non, but Mathew reminds him that they are already late.

She is on her way back to Ghana, permanently

Non begins, “I’m on my way to London – I’m flying back out to Ghana tomorrow and I don’t intend to come back, ever.

DJ says not a word

“I just wanted to say that I understand why you chose her – it’s not much of a choice really, is it?   I have nothing to offer you, unlike Sioned – but I’ll always be so glad I met you.

"You're such a special man, DJ"

“You’re such a special man, DJ.   Sioned’s a very lucky woman.”

"You just know, don't you?"

As she turns to go, DJ finally speaks;  “When you’re supposed to be with a special person, you just know, don’t you?   Ghana is lucky to have you.”

"It's time we left, DJ!"

Mathew, who has been waiting, well within earshot, reminds DJ that it is time they left.

Now DJ's stomach is playing up

When she has exited through the back door, DJ must first visit the toilet, giving the excuse that last night’s burritos have upset his stomach.

People are becoming anxious at Bethania

Outside Bethania, with the sound of organ music from the chapel, Eifion anxiously asks Jason where they are;  he was thinking exactly the same thing,

"Just phoning for an update, Eifion"

and is phoning for an update.   “Mathew, tell me, does DJ remember that he’s getting married today?

"Too busy throwing up to bother with the nuptials?"

“Or is he too busy throwing up to bother with the nuptials?

"Here comes Sioned now!"

“Oh, Sioned’s arrived!”

"You'd think that Gerwyn could have fixed the car!"

She and her mother are walking along the street, with Sioned moaning, “You’d think that Gerwyn could have fixed the car – he’s an experienced mechanic!”   Eileen is just pleased that they have arrived, but now has a stone in her shoe.

Sioned interprets everything as omens

Sioned regards it all as a premonition;  “The car breaks down – a stone in your shoe.”   She assumes that the others are inside the chapel, but is informed that the boys are running late;

"They had a puncture"

Eifion manufactures the excuse that they have a puncture.

"Why don't I get some champagne?"

Jason proposes that in the absence of anything else to do, they should have a glass of champagne while they are waiting.

"Where does Diane keep those tablets"

Meanwhile, at Bryntirion, DJ is searching for tablets for a dodgy stomach, which he knows Diane keeps somewhere.

When he finds the Rennies . . .

At last he finds a packet of Rennies,

. . . he also locates his passport

and notices that in the same drawer is his passport, at which he looks thoughtfully, then puts it in his pocket

Drinking champagne out in the street

As they stand, suitably distanced, outside the vestry with their champagne, Eileen says they had better go inside, “Or Megan will come out and make a fuss about us keeping everyone waiting.”   Sioned imagines they will be reprimanded for being drunk, but Jason points out that it is just a small glass to quench their thirst.

"Until the luckiest bloke in the Cwm arrives!"

“Until the luckiest bloke in the Cwm arrives!” adds Eileen.

And here he comes, not looking at his best

Then the groom and best man approach along the street, with DJ looking decidedly under par.   Eileen wants Sioned to go inside, as it is unlucky for him to see her,

"It's a bit late for that, Mam!"

but it is rather late for that now.

DJ does indeed look rather rough

Eifion demands where they have been, and urges DJ to go into the chapel,

Sioned greets him . . .

but he is not yet feeling the benefit of the tablets.

. . . and he approaches her

He walks slowly towards Sioned

"I'm making a mistake"

and apologises that he is making a mistake;

"I can't do this any more!"

“I can’t do this – I can’t do this any more!”

Sioned cannot understand this sudden change

She is understandably distraught, and snarls,

"But this is what we both want, DJ!"

“Non, is it?   Since when?   But this is what we both want!”

"Life's too short to play safe all the time"

He replies that it is not what he wants now;  “Life’s too to short to play safe all the time.”

Sioned is left heartbroken

She cannot understand why he is saying this, but muttering, “Sorry,” as he so often does, he turns away.

"You're not thinking straight, DJ!"

Mathew exclaims that he does not know what he is doing;  he is not thinking straight,

"Look after her for me, Math"

but DJ instructs him, “Look after her for me, Math,” and continues to retreat along the street.

"I've got nothing to be ashamed of!"

Eileen intends to phone for a taxi to take them home, but Sioned insists, “I’ve got nothing to be ashamed of!   Mathew, go into the chapel, bring everyone out – we’re going to drink the Deri dry!”   She drains her champagne glass and throws her bouquet to the ground,

She marches resolutely up the road

then marches resolutely up the middle of the road towards the Deri.

Mark settles down to read the paper

At Maes-y-Deri, Mark is settling down to read the Western Post

"Aren't you supposed to be in the chapel?"

when he is astonished to see DJ coming in;  “Aren’t you supposed to be in the chapel?” he asks.

"I've made a mistake"

DJ is anxious to see Non, maintaining that it is a long story;  “I’ve made a mistake,” he says,

"Yes, coming back here, after what you did to Non!"

and Mark regards it as a big mistake coming back there, after what he did to Non.

“It’s her I want, not Sioned,” DJ goes on, “I know she’s on her way to London, so I just wanted to . . .”

"What – break her heart again?"

“Wanted to do what?   Break her heart again?” Mark rages,

"Non is the one I want!"

but DJ makes it quite clear that Non is the one he wants.

She is listening to this

At that moment she is quietly coming downstairs;  he maintains that they have something special, and that he was stupid to think that he could just settle for Sioned and the farm.

“My heart just wants Non,” he groans, “So do you know how I can get hold of her?”

"I'm here, right under your nose"

She comes into the room, announcing that she is right there, under his nose.

"I'm meant to be with you"

He declares, “I’m meant to be with you – it doesn’t matter about anything else – they don’t understand, but we understand each other, don’t we?   We always have.   Now I don’t like needles,

"I'll need a few jabs before going to Ghana"

“but I’ve heard I’ll need a few jabs before going to Ghana.”   He takes his passport from his pocket and Non is highly delighted.

Sioned is determined to enjoy herself

In the Deri, the ‘celebration’ is in full swing,

Jason and Eifion have a plastering job to do . . .

but Jason informs Eifion, “There’s a plastering job waiting for us in the manse – that’s where we should be now.   There’s a bonus for finishing the job early – and it’s only a matter of time before the tears kick in here.   Once that happens, it won’t be much fun, believe me.”

. . . so take their leave of the party

Eifion reluctantly leaves the food and alcohol, and they slip out of the pub.  Sioned is putting away another glass of prosecco, and is encouraged by Mathew to slow down a bit.

"We're going to enjoy ourselves!"

“We’re going to enjoy ourselves today!” she insists, and invites Ray to come and have a glass with them, as they are celebrating, but he declines the invitation.

“Right, stuff you then, if it’s not good enough for you!” she snarls,

"I don't want to be part of this farce!"

and he tells Mathew that he wants a quiet pint, not to be part of this farce.

"I'm ashamed of you as well!"

“To be honest, I’m ashamed of you as well – it’s the best man’s job to make sure that the groom gets married!

"Look at her, poor dab"

“You can’t even do that right – look at her, poor dab.”

Huwi is playing with his train, quite oblivious

Jaclyn has given Eileen a lift home, and says that it was the least she could do after Gerwyn’s car broke down.   “Huwi-John has no idea what’s going on – he’s playing with his trains,” says Eileen.

Jaclyn is willing to look after him, if Eileen fancies joining Sioned in the Deri,

"I'm the last person she'll want to see"

but is told, “I’m the last person she’ll want to have there.   Today was supposed to be a new start for her – she’s been through so much – she’s experienced heartbreak time after time.

"I thought she'd fallen on her feet this time"

“I honestly thought she’d fallen on her feet this time – playing safe, perhaps, but DJ was supposed to be different to the other boys.

"This marriage was supposed to last for ever"

“This marriage was supposed to last for ever.”

"What do you want me to do with the rings?"

Mathew asks Sioned what he should do with the rings;

"I don't give a damn!"

I don’t give a damn!” she replies, and he is sure that there is someone better out there for her.

"I did try to stop them"

He says that he tried to stop DJ and Non.   Sioned is furious that he knew about it;

"What – and you didn't say a word to me?"

“You knew and if you didn't say a word to me – you’re as bad as him!   Coward!

"Get out of my sight!"

Get out of my sight!”

Cassie asks Ray if he wants another one, but he is leaving now;

Cassie appears to be chatting up Ray

“I was thinking I could keep you company – you’re a great handyman,” she remarks, “That sink works perfectly now, after you were there last week.”

"It's more like Sodom and Gomorrah!"

Why would I want to spend a second longer here?” he snarls, “It’s more like Sodom and Gomorrah than rural Wales!”

Rhys has to drink it, or Sioned will

Rhys is still drinking, and tells Gerwyn, “We have to finish this champagne, or Sioned won’t be in any fit state to go home.

"I don't know what the world has done to Raymond Price"

Cassie follows Ray along the street;  “Look, I don’t know what the world has done to Raymond Price, but it doesn’t give him the right to lambast other people!”

He declares, “It’s a farce – marriage!”

"Some marriages are worse than others"

She agrees that some are worse than others, and he continues, “I thought I’d hit the jackpot –

"Ivana preferred the company of other men"

“but Ivana preferred the company of other men, so I brought Matthew up on my own.

"I brought him up to behave better than that!"

“And I brought him up to behave better than that, I can tell you!   So, if you want to blame someone, go and find Ivana!”

"I think you've finished it all, Sioned"

Sioned, rather unsteady on her feet, instructs Rhys to go and get more champagne for her, but he thinks that she has finished it all.   “It’s still early!” she protests, “Right, we’ll have shots instead!”

"Do you think that's a good idea?"

Gerwyn intervenes to ask if that is a good idea,

"It's fantastic idea . . ."

but she considers that it is a fantastic idea and sits down by him.

". . . because today has been a disaster!"

“Because today has been a disaster!”   He says how sorry he is, maintaining that DJ has made a hell of a mistake.

"The thing about DJ is – he's boring . . ."

Sioned tells him, “You see, the thing about DJ is – he’s boring, isn’t he?

“But you know how to enjoy yourself, don’t you?”

"You've had enough, Sioned!"

She picks up another glass and Gerwyn warns against drinking any more, as she has had enough.

"I didn't know you could be so authoritative"

“Oh – I didn’t know you could be so authoritative!” she slurs,

He has no way of escape from Sioned's vice-like grip

then quickly leans forward and forcefully kisses him;  he is unable to escape.

Rhys has the 'shot' substitutes . . .

Rhys brings over what are supposed to be some shots, presumably diluted,

. . . and is amazed

and is astonished at the sight which greets him.

Jaclyn happens to come in . . .

At that moment Jaclyn walks in

. . . and witness the scene

and is similarly horrified.
