A photo hangs from . . .
A small photograph of Cheryl and Mark
. . . the rearview mirror
hangs from the rearview mirror of the camper-van;
Gaynor arrives . . .
Gaynor taps on the door and gets in,
. . . with ham and mustard sandwiches
carrying a box of ham and mustard sandwiches.
"Cheryl loved ham and mustard"
“Cheryl loved ham and mustard – and she loved road trips,” he comments. Gaynor points out that this is some journey, so Mark asks, “Three, four hours? You’re not going to say anything until we get there?”
"We should get going"
She agrees that she is not but considers that they should get going.
"I have no idea, Mam"
Kath comes out of the Deri to enquire where they are going; “I have no idea, Mam,” Mark replies
The journey begins
and they begin the journey along the High Street.
Mathew is back at Penrhewl
Mathew is home from hospital with his leg swathed in bandages; Sioned is caring for him, “I’ll get the rest of the stuff from the car once you’re settled. Sorry, I was going to make a fuss and a banner with the kids.”
"I can't wait to see the children again"
He cannot wait to see the children again, and Sioned has a lot to do before they get back.
He struggles with his jacket
He struggles to take off his jacket,
"Why won't you let me help you""
so she demands, “Why won’t you let me help you? Come here.”
"It suits you"
Mathew notices the engagement ring on her finger and says that it suits her.
"I'll go and check on that calf"
She tells him she will go and check on that calf and then will make a cup of tea; “We don't want another vet's bill.”
Ows calla to Indeg
Indeg is coming out of the shop with a pint of milk just as Ows emerges from number 10 and calls to her.
She abruptly tells him to get out of her way. “I’m so sorry – you know it was an accident, don’t you?”
"Whatever we had is over!"
However, she makes it crystal clear to him, “Whatever we had is over – I don’t want to see you again – just leave me alone!”
Rhys has witnessed this exchange from inside the deli and goes outside. Ows maintains that he just wants to apologise.
. . . then warns off Ows
Rhys demands, “Oi – what are you doing? Don’t you go near her again – do you hear me?”
"Get out of my way"
Ows tells him to get out of the way;
"You'll hit me, too?"
“Or what? You’ll hit me, too? I’ve been trying to contact you – you can’t stay there any longer, understand?
“I want you out tonight.”
In the Deri, Kelly tells Cassie, “You must be sick to the back teeth of people asking, like, and I’m genuinely not being nosy, but how are you?”
Cassie concedes that it was a kick in the teeth
Kelly can appreciate that and adds that she has read the article;
"I thought it was absolutely shocking!"
“I thought it was absolutely shocking – and that’s just the punctuation!”
"Teflon woman, she is"
Kath is also concerned about Cassie, remarking to Kelly, “Teflon woman, she is, always has been, she’ll bounce back –
"Phoenix, from the flames"
“like, er, a Phoenix from the flames.”
"Could you give me a couple of soundbites?"
Kelly appears to have an idea; “Kath, do you think you can give me, like, a couple of exclusive soundbites about Cassie? There's been such a backlash to that horrible feature in the Herald, we need to do something about it.”
Kath wonders what she has in mind.
“I don’t know, a double page spread about the real Cassie, you know – the Cassie we love, the Cassie we know –
"Top secret, right?"
“but top secret, right?” Kath looks puzzled,
Kelly hurries off
but Kelly hurries off.
"I haven't seen Indeg since . . ."
Now Ows approaches Lleucu and asks how Indeg is, as he is not seen her since . . .
"Since you slapped her across the face, yeah?"
“Since you slapped her across the face, yeah?” is Lleucu’s reply. He maintains that he just wants to know that she is OK;
"You're not welcome here?"
“Why? To ease your conscience? What are you doing here anyway? You’re not welcome here after what you did to Cassie.”
"I want to talk to Indeg"
He answers that he is staying because of Indeg and just wants to talk to her, but she reminds him, “You almost came between us – you could have destroyed our friendship,
"Like you destroy everything you touch?"
“like you destroy everything else you touch!”
"I hope she can forgive me"
Ows stresses, “I’m no angel – I just hope she can find it in her heart to forgive me.”
"Your ego's even bigger than your biceps!"
Lleucu realises, “Your ego’s even bigger than your biceps – and I’m sure that they are pumped up full of steroids – is that why you get angry and use your fists? Indeg is one of us – the people of this village are loyal to each other – and your Nan is one of the best of us, do you understand? You don’t deserve a family or love, and I’m not surprised you have no friends!”
Lleucu walks away
With that, she walks away, leaving him considering her words.
Along the road, outside Tomos ac Ellis, Kelly is making notes;
"With a pinch of spice thrown in"
Ieuan describes Cassie as, “Salt of the earth, but with a pinch of spice thrown in.”
"We have to go now"
Kelly appreciates that, but now they have to go, as otherwise they will be late to meet Auntie Neet.
"Indeg!"
Ieuan has just noticed Indeg walking past the surgery,
She ignores him
but she simply ignores him.
"I'll pass the message on"
Hywel is speaking on the phone
"Have you seen Gaynor?"
and asks Ieuan if he has seen Gaynor anywhere, then hurries away before he can explain.
Anita has been brought to the deli
Auntie Neet has been brought to the deli by one of the carers from Brynawelon.
"Brave, like a dragon"
“Brave, like a dragon,” Kelly tells Auntie Neet and notes that down in her book.
"Everyone likes Cassie"
Anita goes on, “Everyone likes the red Dragon and everyone likes Cassie – but Cassie doesn’t like everyone –
"She likes men – a lot of men!"
she can spit fire! She likes men – lots of men!”
"Sorry I'm late"
Ieuan arrives and apologises for being late; Anita tells him that she is looking forward to coming back to the village.
"I'll be back soon, Auntie Neet"
Kelly now has to go and interview Kath, but she will be back soon.
"It will give use time to catch up"
Anita likens Kelly to a whirlwind and Ieuan says that it will give them more time to catch up.
Then something puzzles Ieuan . . .
As he holds her hand, he is amazed to see
. . . Mami's ring is back
that the ring with the green stone is back on her finger.
"I need to go to the toilet"
Sioned is very flustered, with the feed delivery arriving, but she has not made room in the shed for it. Mathew also needs some assistance, as he has to go to the toilet.
"You need more looking after than Jac and Lili"
“You need more looking after than Jac and Lili”, she groans, but then adds, “Sorry, I didn’t mean it like that.”
"The delivery has arrived"
Her phone sounds to advise her that the delivery has arrived and she will be back with Mathew as soon as she can; she informs the delivery man that she will be down to the gate now.
"We're like Thelma and Louise . . ."
In the Deri, Kath maintains that she and Cassie are like Thelma and Louise,
". . . but not the end, when they drive off the cliff!"
“But not the end, when they drive off the cliff,” she is quick to point out. “Is that the sort of thing you want?”
Kelly is very pleased with this,
"Are you talking about me?"
but at that moment Cassie comes into the bar and wants to know, “Are you talking about me?”
"Why would we be talking about you?"
Kath replies, “No – why would we be talking about you?”
"Have you seen Gaynor?"
Then Hywel comes in, still looking for Gaynor; he is surprised that no-one has seen her.
“I saw her this morning with Mark in the camper-van,” says Kath,
"That could be a scandal!"
which Cassie regards as quite a scandal. Kelly wonders why he is in such a hurry to find her and is told that her solicitor is trying to get hold of her; apparently the CPS has some big news about the case against her.
That sounds ominous
Kelly thinks that this sounds ominous.
The Llangollen Canal . . .
The scene shifts to a canal, the Llangollen Canal, where we can see the camper-van arriving at a car park.
. . . where they reach the end of their journey
Mark and Gaynor get out and comment that it is nice there.
Surely he noticed the road signs on the way
They walk along beside the water, with the daffodils in bloom and he rather ignorantly asks, “Where are we?”
"Pontcysyllte . . ."
“Pontcysyllte,” Gaynor answers, “Cheryl has been here.
". . . I wanted to choose somewhere special"
“I wanted to choose somewhere special, close to Wrexham and not too far from where I was brought up.”
"We're together in North Wales now"
Mark recalls, “She always said that she wanted us all to go on a tour of North Wales together. At least the three of us are together in North Wales now – I think she’d be happy here.”
"I don't want to talk to you"
Ieuan has arrived at Y Felin, where Indeg does not want to talk to him. He assures her that he is not staying, but just wants to make sure that she is all right.
"I heard about that vile attack"
“I heard about that vile attack,” but she describes it as an accident. “I’ve never trusted that Ows,” he goes on, “If I saw him now, I’d kill the swine! Mind you, I might have to climb a ladder to look at him eye to eye.”
"I'm fine"
Indeg appreciate his concern but maintains that she is fine.
"How on earth is Mami's ring back?"
“You’ve been busy as well, haven’t you?” he adds, “I’ve just been with Anita – how on earth is Mami’s ring back on her finger? I saw you throw it down a drain in Swansea.”
“The one I threw away wasn’t Mam-gu’s – I would never have given that to Mam.”
"What happened, then?"
He wonders how she explains what happened, then,
"I found a cheaper one"
so she explains, “I took Mam-gu’s ring to a costume jewellery shop and bought another ring that was similar, but cheaper – that’s the one I gave to Mam.”
"I'm sorry for thinking the worst of you"
“So you never got rid of Mami’s ring, then? I’m sorry for thinking the worst of you.” her grandfather sighs.
"I don't deserve anything else"
Indeg says that she does not deserve anything else with the way she has been behaving. Ieuan appreciates that she was in an impossible situation;
"I hope one day you can forgive her"
“What your mother asked of you was unforgivable, but I hope, one day you can forgive her in some way, like I’ve forgiven you.”
"I don't deserve forgiveness"
Indeg is of the opinion that she does not deserve forgiveness, but is told not to talk rubbish.
"Just go now, will you?"
“Please, Tycs, just go, will you?”
"I'll see you when you're ready"
He agrees to do so and will see her again, when she is ready.
Mark shouts from the aqueduct
We see the imposing Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and hear the shout, “Mark Jones!” coming from the towpath. Gaynor is afraid that Mark will be arrested for shouting.
"It's exactly what Cher would have done"
“Don’t be soft – it’s exactly what Cher would have done. I miss her.”
"Can `I have five minutes on my own?"
In tears, Gaynor confesses that she also does, asking Mark to give her five minutes on her own.
Mark hands her the urn
He reaches into his bag and takes out the urn, handing it to her.
"I'm glad you have the opportunity to say goodbye properly"
“I’m glad you're here, Gaynor – and I’m glad you have the opportunity to say goodbye properly.
"She loved you, through everything"
“Remember, she loved you – through everything.”
Mark walks away . . .
He walks back along the narrow towpath
. . . leaving Gaynor alone
as the airborne camera captures Gaynor standing alone halfway across the aqueduct.
Mathew switches channels
Matthew is flicking between television channels, as Sioned comes into the farmhouse looking at a sheet of paper, which he assumes is another bill.
"We'll lose that grant!"
“No, a letter saying we’ll lose the grant if we don’t sort out the fence in Cae Cwm – it doesn’t stop! They’ve already given me one extension – and you can’t help, can you?”
"I'm punishing myself enough as it is . . ."
“I know that and I’m punishing myself enough as it is – you don’t need to as well!” Mathew snaps,
". . . listen, this isn't going to work"
“Listen, this isn’t going to work – you can’t look after me, the children and the farm and everything else – it just isn’t possible.”
"I can stay with Mam for a while"
She wonders what else he can suggest and he proposes staying with his mother for a while; “Just until I get stronger.’
Sioned will not hear of it
She refuses this suggestion out of hand; “What will Social Services think when they arrive and you’re not here? And I don't want you to go either!”
"We'll make this work"
Mathew is sorry for being so useless, while Sioned is sorry for complaining all the time, but insists that they will make this work.
Gaynor is still up there . . .
Atop the aqueduct, Gaynor is musing, “I’m so sorry, Cher, for everything. For the awful things that happened to you and for letting you down.
. . . wishing she could turn the clock back
“I’d do anything to go back to that day you turned up at Llwyncelyn.”
"Hywel's been phoning both of us . . ."
Mark is hurrying back towards her to give her the news that Hywel has been phoning both of them; “The CPS have been in touch –
". . . you have to phone your solicitor now!"
“you have to phone your solicitor – now.”
Gaynor does so
She hands back the urn and dials the number on her phone.
Ows comes out of number 10 . . .
Ows comes cautiously out of the door of number 10 with his luggage.
. . . and hands over the keys
Rhys is waiting, hand outstretched, for the key; when it is given to him, he walks away without a further word.
He walks along the street . . .
walks despondently along the street
. . . and turns into the alley
and through the alley,
"Good riddance!"
watched by Cassie, outside the Deri, who mutters, “Good riddance!”
"Who's that?"
Sioned is speaking on the phone,
"Yes, that suits us . . ."
“Hiya, yes, of course, yes, that suits us –
". . . we'll see you then"
“OK, we’ll see you then.”
"Social Services – tomorrow"
She informs Mathew that it was Social Services, who do want to come and see them – tomorrow.
Sioned is becoming desperate
She throws her phone down on the table in desperation.
"Thank you"
Midway across the aqueduct, Gaynor thanks the solicitor then turns
"Discontinuance!"
and jubilantly announces to Mark, “Discontinuance! The CPS isn’t going to proceed with the case as it is not in the public interest and they have so much evidence showing how much control Tom had over me!
"I don't have to go to court, Mark!"
“I don’t have to go to court, Mark!”
"That's fantastic!"
He regards that as fantastic news
"It's finally over!"
and she realises, “It’s finally over!”
"You're both are from Tom for ever"
“You and Cher – you’re both free from Tom for ever,” he assures her.
"Gaynor Llywelyn!"
She turns and shouts at the top of her voice, “Gaynor Llywelyn!”
"Who's going to get arrested now?"
Mark demands who is going to be arrested now; she is not quite sure why she did that,
"Well, what now?"
then asks, “Well, what now?”
"It's time, Gaynor"
They both decide that now it is time;
"Cheryl Thomas for ever!"
flinging the ashes to the wind, while loudly shouting, “Cheryl Thomas for ever!
"Love you, Cher!"
“Love you, Cher!”
