Eifion can detect no pulse

Eifion has coincidentally come upon the body of Izzy and is distraught;

"Oh, no, Izzy – please!"

“Oh, no, Izzy – please!” he gasps, then he picks up her phone

"Police and ambulance, please"

to call for the police and an ambulance.

Gaynor has sustained an injury . . .

Gaynor has returned from her run and has injured her hand;

. . . and runs cold water over it

as she runs come cold water over it,

"Are you OK?"

Hywel comes downstairs and asks if she is OK.

"It's just my hand"

She explains, “I fell – but it’s just my hand.”   He remarks that she was out for a long time;

"I was trying to clear my head"

“I was trying to clear my head, but I don’t think I managed to,” she answers.

Eifion says that he was just passing

The police are soon on the scene and Eifion informs DI Wilkinson that he was just passing;

"I often come this way"

he works at Deri Fawr farm and often comes this way.   “But you know Esyllt Evans from APD as well,” asks the DI, and Eifion says that he works there part-time.

"It's her boyfriend – I haven't told him yet"

Then the phone which he is holding rings, and he can see that it is a call from Mathew;  “Her boyfriend is trying to get hold of her – I haven’t told him yet.”

The DI's suspicions are aroused

The DI is surprised to discover that it is her phone and asks where it was;

"It was next to her on the ground"

Eifion points out that it was next to her on the ground.

“Did you take anything else?” he is asked, “We need to know if anything else has been moved – we can’t take anything for granted yet.   “We’ll need that phone.”

"Can you answer the door, Hywel?"

Gaynor is loading the washing machine when there is a knock at the door, which is answered by Hywel;

A police constable comes in . . .

a police constable has come to speak to Gaynor,

. . . and causes Gaynor some alarm

and she looks very worried.

Colin tells Rhys about the mythical Fflam

Colin is trying to explain to Rhys, “Look, as I’ve told you a hundred times, it was just a story my grandfather told my father, and he passed it on to me.”

Britt is looking determined

Britt approaches along the street, looking very grim, as Rhys describes it as an incredible story, and cannot believe that no-one has heard it before.

"You need to come home now, Col"

Colin can see that something is wrong when Britt simply stands there and says nothing;  “You need to come home now,” she tells him, “I’ve phoned Eileen and she’s on her way.”

"It's not Aaron, is it?"

He immediately assumes that it is something to do with Aaron, but she says, “Izzy – there’s been an accident.”

"Is she all right?"

He wants to know if she is all right, or in hospital,

"She's dead, Col!"

but Britt continues, “She’s dead, Col!”

Eifion breaks the news to Mathew

Mathew is in much the same position when he is told by Eifion;

"You've made a mistake, Eifion"

“Listen, you’ve made a mistake – stop saying you’re sorry – you’ve made a mistake, OK?”

"Hi, Izzy – are you . . ?"

As Eifion sits there. sobbing, he takes his phone and dials Izzy’s number;  “Hi, Izzy – it’s me – are you . . ?”

Then the full impact hits him

and he breaks down in tears.

"The police don't know exactly what happened"

He is told that the police do not know exactly what happened,

"I want to see where she was"

and exclaims, “We were about to buy a house – I’ve sorted everything – I want to go and see where she was.

"You won't be allowed near the place"

Eifion warns that he will not be allowed near the place as there are police everywhere.   “What exactly did the police say?” Mathew demands, and is told that they are making enquiries.

"Did it look as if she'd been attacked?"

“Did it look like she’d been attacked?” is Mathew’s next question, “Were there marks on her, or blood?   Were her clothes on?”

“No-one had touched her clothes, but it looked like she’d hit her head – perhaps she fell over or something,” says Eifion, “You’ll find out more from the police –

"Come on, I'll take you home"

“come on, I’ll take you home.   You don’t want to see anyone else today, do you?”

Mathew leaves the house

Mathew walks slowly from the house.

Hywel finds the envelope

Hywel finds the envelope addressed to Izzy just as Gaynor comes into the room;

"Angharad destroyed all the photos!"

“I don’t have any photos of her as a little girl,” she complains, “Angharad destroyed them all!”   He replies that memories are worth more than photos,

"What memories?"

but she demands, “What memories?   All the fighting?”

“The fact that you argued doesn’t mean you didn’t love each other,” he stresses, “Every family disagrees.”

"We were best friends when she was a little girl"

Gaynor recalls that they did not always hate each other – they were best friends when she was a little girl, and even when Colin left . . .

"I wonder how Colin is"

Then she wonders how Colin is, and Hywel raises the matter of the envelope;

"I found this"

“I found this,” he says, and she explains that she wanted to say sorry.

"It wouldn't have made any difference!"

“I texted her to see if she wanted to go for a run, but she didn’t reply, so I just wanted to explain and say sorry.   What’s the point?   It wouldn’t have made any difference.   She hated me, Hywel – and nothing is ever going to change that now!

"We shall have to wait for the results of the post-mortem"

In the chip shop flat, DI Wilkinson explains to Colin, “It looks as though she hit her head – we can’t be sure that was the cause of death, so we shall have to wait for the results of the post-mortem.”   Colin is horrified that they have to do this,

"About Esyllt's mental state"

but the questioning continues, “Can you tell me how was Esyllt’s mental state over the last few days?”

"Happier that she's been for years"

He hesitantly replies, “Well – I’d say she was happier than she has been for years.   She’d settled into her new job – she and Math were buying a house together.”

This is too much for Colin

He bursts into tears, then manages to compose himself and continues, “She would never have taken her own life – never!   Do you understand?   She just enjoyed life –

"Has someone killed Izzy?"

“has someone killed Izzy?   Is that what you’re trying to say?”

"We're looking into all possibilities"

The DI is unable to answer that, which is why they are looking into all possibilities and carrying out a post-mortem.

"Who would want to kill my little girl?"

“Who would want to kill my little girl, Britt?” Colin wails.

Gaynor is roused from her slumbers

Hywel opens the curtains, and Gaynor, who has been asleep on the sofa, wakes up;  “I didn’t have the heart to wake you last night – I left you to sleep here,” he says.

She has been dreaming about Izzy

She did not sleep well, but dreamt about Izzy;  “We were at a station and she was going away – I didn’t want her to go,

"I tried to stop her, but she insisted"

“and tried to stop her, but she insisted.”

"You must believe that she loved you"

He assures her that Izzy loved her – she must believe that,

"I'm going to see the place they found her"

and she decides that she is going to see the place where they found her.

"I want to be on my own"

She does not want Hywel to go with her;  “I want to be on my own – I want to be there, with her.”

Colin gazes at the spot where she died

Colin is standing at the spot in the woods, surrounded by police tape, where Izzy was found, and Britt is nearby.

He is joined by Gaynor

Gaynor joins them as they stare at the spot;

"She was happy, wasn't she?"

“She was happy, wasn’t she?” says Colin, but Gaynor makes no reply.   “The police have been asking whether she would do something deliberately.”

"I would be the last to know, Colin"

Gaynor confesses that she would be the last to know, and Britt remarks that everyone always feels guilty after someone dies.

"Have you heard about the post-mortem?"

“Have you heard about the post-mortem?” Gaynor asks, and he reminds her that before then, they will have to confirm that it is Izzy.

"I can't face that"

Gaynor cannot face that prospect, and Colin consoles her that he will go,

"I want to see her"

as he wants to see her.

He has brought a small floral tribute

He stoops down and leave a small bunch of flowers by the police tape, then walks despondently away from the scene.

Gaynor weeps copiously . . .

Gaynor is in floods of tears

. . . and sinks to her knees

as she sinks to her knees

"Oh, Izzy, I'm so sorry!"

and sobs, “Oh, Izzy, I’m so sorry, my darling – so sorry!”

"She was on a diet – but it's not important now"

Mathew tells Eifion, “She was on a diet – it’s not important now.”   There is a knock at the door and the DI appears;

"The lady in the shop told me to come up"

he says that the lady in the shop told him to come up.

He introduces himself as being in charge of the investigation into Esyllt’s death and is very sorry for Mathew’s loss;  “We’re doing everything we can to find out what happened.

"When did you last see Esyllt?"

“Ive just got a couple of questions – when did you last see Esyllt?”

Mathew replies that it was yesterday afternoon;

"I was supposed to go for a run with her"

“Just before she went out – I was supposed to go out for a run with her – we were buying a house – I was trying to get the money together as a surprise for her.”

"There was a text from her mother about going running"

The DI mentions, “There was a text from her mother asking her to go running,”

"Izzy and her Mam don't get on"

but Mathew makes it very clear that she would not have gone running with her mother, as they do not get on.

He cannot really explain why this is;

"Nothing she does was good enough for her mother"

“You know, nothing that Izzy does was good enough for her mother – and I don’t know why.”

The DI leaves his card . . .

The DI thanks him and leaves a card with his phone number.

. . . and eyes Eifion

With what might be suspicious look at Eifion, he leaves the flat.

Mathew will go for a lie down

Mathew is going for a lie down.

Colin returns from identifying the body

In the chip shop flat, Colin has just returned from the mortuary;

"Britt said you'd gone to the mortuary"

Eileen has been waiting for him.   “They have to carry out a post-mortem, and they needed someone to identify her,” he says,

"I wanted to stay and talk to her"

“I just didn’t want to leave – I wanted to stay with her and talk to her.”

"She's part of you – always will be"

Eileen maintains that he can talk to her any time;  “She’s part of you – always will be.”

"But that's not enough, is it?"

He sighs that it is not enough, and she agrees with him;  “This should never happened to anyone – losing a child.   Do they know any more about how it happened?”

"I can't understand who would want to hurt Izzy!"

“That’s the worst thing,” Colin replies, “The possibility that she did it deliberately – or that someone else . . . I can’t understand, Eileen – who would want to hurt Izzy?”

"Don't get ahead of yourself, Col"

She advises him not to get ahead of himself, as he has enough to deal with, without worrying about something that surely has not happened.

"Out there is the middle of nowhere . . ."

He knows that she is right, but cannot bear to think about her out there in the middle of nowhere in her final few moments.

". . . with no-one to comfort her"

“There was no-one there for her, Eileen – no-one to comfort her.

Gaynor is asked about any problems Izzy might have had

Now DI Wilkinson is speaking to Gaynor;  “As far as you are aware, Esyllt didn’t have any problems?   Personal, financial?”

"None that I know about"

She does not know of any, mentioning the house she was buying with her boyfriend, so does not think that she had any financial or personal problems.   Hywel is nearby, listening to this.

"You invited her to go for a run"

“I saw on Esyllt’s phone that you invited her to go for a run,” the DI remarks, and Gaynor assumes that she must have already left.   “When was the last time you spoke to her?” is the next question.

"A few days ago"

“A few days ago,” she answers, rather vaguely, “And she seemed great – she was excited about the house, although perhaps worried about which blinds to get or perhaps a new sofa.”

"You got on well, then?"

“You got on well, then?” he goes on,

"We were best friends"

and Gaynor describes them as being best friends, causing raised eyebrows from Hywel,

The DI notices Hywel's telltale reaction

which the DI apparently notices.   He says that is all that he needs for now and will be in touch if there is any new information.

"I wasn't going to tell him we weren't talking"

Hywel looks at Gaynor, who sobs, “I wasn’t going to tell him that we weren’t talking, was I?”

"You just lied to the police"

He emphasises that she has just lied to the police, but she protests, “What difference would it make if the police knew that my own daughter hated me?

"I've got enough on my plate already!"

“I’ve got enough on my plate without everybody judging me!”

"This is not about you being judged, Gaynor"

He makes it clear, “It’s not about you being judged – they need the facts to . . .”   She stops him, insisting that she needs time to come to terms with the fact that her daughter is dead.

"Please, leave me alone!"

“She’s gone, Hywel!   And there’s nothing you or the police or anyone else can say that will bring her back – so please, just please, leave me alone!”
