"The police saw me on CCTV"

Next morning, Gaynor is anxiously waiting, but at last Cheryl returns, explaining, “The police saw me breaking into that fried chicken place on the CCTV – they had been watching the place since the break-in.”   (One wonders whose CCTV that might be, as MFC certainly does not have it).

"Why did they keep you there so long?"

Hywel cannot understand why they kept her there so long;  “To check things, I suppose –

"They said they're going to keep an eye on me"

“they said that they are going to keep an eye on me.”   Gaynor is glad that she is back, and she goes on to explain that she has been in a bit of trouble with the police before.

"I've got a record"

“I’ve got a record – for shoplifting, and I went to jail because I couldn’t afford the fine.”

"Great!"

Hywel mutters, “Great!” as she goes on that she stole food, as it was Mam’s birthday and Cheryl wanted to cook something special.

"She had beans on toast in the end"

“She had beans on toast in the end,” she says,

"They hear a familiar voice"

and then there is the sound of familiar voice as Rhys comes in through the back door.

"I'll leave you to get to know each other"

He is introduced to Cheryl, Gaynor’s ‘sister’ and Hywel will leave them to get to know each other.

Griffiths comes into the pharmacy

Cassie comes into the pharmacy and as she is selecting something from a shelf, Ieuan Griffiths also arrives;  he rings the bell for service

"Just making myself a cup of soup"

and Maya apologises that she was just making herself a cup of soup to keep her going until lunch break.

Cassie is happy to wait, but of course Griffiths maintains that he is busy;

"I need something for a fungal infection"

“I need something for a fungal infection,”

"He doesn't look too well!"

then adds, “He doesn’t look too well!” pointing at the skeleton, and Maya sarcastically remarks that she has never heard that one before.

"I hear that an English company is interested"

Cassie raises the subject of the Deri;  “I hear that an English company is interested in it.”

He turns and sneers, “Not you as well?   You heard wrong, all right?”   She thought that it would be only a rumour, as even a man like him would not do something so unpopular.

"I'm not in business to be popular"

“I’m not in business to be popular,” he snarls, “The Deri will go to the highest bidder – perhaps you should look for another job, just in case.”

"Do you sell arsenic?"

After he has paid for his purchase and left the shop, Cassie remarks, “Do you sell arsenic, so I can put it in his pint?”

"Pardon?"

Fortunately Maya does not understand this, and Cassie explains, “I just said what a lovely man he is!”

"I heard you wanted to stay here . . ."

Rhys is lounging on the sofa, looking at his phone;  Gaynor tells him, “Rhys, I heard that you wanted to stay here –

". . . sorry, you can't!"

“Sorry, you can’t.   With Cheryl staying, there is no room – and Esther, of course.   I don’t want anyone sleeping on the sofa.   Can’t you stay at number 10 until it’s sold?”

"I need to rent it out as soon as possible"

He replies that he has taken it off the market for now as it is so slow and he needs to rent it out as soon as possible.   She is sure that he will find something, but he groans, “Somewhere that will cost money.”

"You are earning, aren't you?"

She points out that he is earning, and he says,

"Tesni and I have separated"

“The thing is, Tesni and I have separated and I’m still paying for the flat in Cardiff – it’s the right thing to do.”

"We can move things around here"

His father comes into the room and is sorry to hear about his situation;  “Don’t look for somewhere else – we can move things around here.”   Rhys says that he will go, but instead of staying has a favour to ask his father.

"Any chance of a loan, Dad?"

“The fridge and oven at number 10 are broken – any chance of a loan?”

"He gave you a loan to buy the place"

Gaynor interrupts to remind him that Hywel gave him a loan to buy the place.   “I didn’t intend to ask for more, but . . .”

Hywel asks how much he needs and is told, “£500.”   Gaynor is incredulous at this,

"Izzy never learned to stand on her own feet, either"

recalling that she gave Izzy a lot of money over the years, and she never learned how to stand on her feet.

"It's none of your business"

“I’m not asking you – so it’s none of your business!” Rhys angrily informs her.

"You've just paid your sister's debts"

Hywel also reminds Gaynor that she has just paid her sister’s debts.   Rhys is adamant that he will pay his father back, and maintains that it is the least he can do, “Considering I can’t stay here.”

"This is my house!"

“This is my house!” stresses Gaynor, “And may I remind you that you have always been welcome over the years?”

Hywel is torn between the two of them but does not want to offend Gaynor.

"Sorry – you'll have to sell it"

“No – number 10 is your business, and if you can’t afford it, sorry, but you’ll have to sell it.”

"Sorry for calling in to see my family"

Rhys, suitably humiliated, apologises for calling in to see his family – he will not bother next time,

Off he goes

and he walks out of the house.

Cai is coming to collect his order

Cai is approaching MFC and notices Maya, who is eating there again,

"This is my uncle, Cai"

this time with Iolo, who introduces his uncle to her.   “His youthful uncle,” Cai adds, and then is told that order 23 is ready.

"Hope to see you very soon"

“Hope to see you very soon,” he tells Maya, and collects his order.

"Can I be there when he find out you're gay?"

“Can I be there when he finds out you’re gay?” asks Iolo,

She smiles

and then continues the conversation they were having before;

"So she's taken demotion to be with you?"

“So she’s moving in with you and she’s taken a demotion in her job, so she can live with you here?   Sounds interesting.”

"She's Delyth"

Maya regards it as not bad, “Considering that we met at a hen do in Llanelli – she’s Delyth.   I think I should go,”

"You've only been here 15 minutes"

but Iolo protests that she has only been there for 15 minutes.

She is reluctant to say any more, but after Iolo persuades her,

"I miss Delyth"

she admits, “I miss Delyth.   I’m working on my own in a busy pharmacy – and desperate people who can’t get doctor’s appointments come to me instead – and speak Welsh to me.   I can’t answer them, so I feel bad and they feel uncomfortable.   I’m scared that I made a mistake coming to such a small place – why should everyone change their language because of me?”

"You'll get there"

Iolo assures her that she will get there;

"It might be too late when I do"

“It might be too late when I do,” she fears.

"Some people won't be that bothered"

“Look, some people will be happy about the Welsh – and some people won’t be that bothered – I’m not, I think you’re great!” says Iolo.

"Celine Dion night at my place soon"

She is glad that she has one friend and suggests, “Celine Dion night at my place soon – camp it up completely!   I’ve got to go – so many prescriptions to prepare.

"I can't stand that thought"

While I’m sitting here, people are suffering and waiting for relief from pain – I can’t stand that thought.”

"That sounds a bit obsessive, doesn't it?"

Iolo comments, sarcastically, “That sounds a bit obsessive, doesn’t it?” and she smiles.

Mathew comes out of APD . . .

Mathew comes out of APD with the lids for incinerators

. . . and is greeted by Rhys

when Rhys approaches;

"You haven't been in touch lately"

Mathew gives him a hug and complains that he has not been in touch lately.   “Everything going well in Cardiff?” he asks,

"Tes and I have finished . . ."

and learns that Rhys and Tes have finished, giving the explanation that it was too much too soon.

“Too much Netflix and not enough enjoyment – we’re still friends,

". . . and one of us had to move out"

“but one of us had to move out.”

"Remember Tegwen's son, Ken?"

Mathew says that Tegwen’s son, Ken, has just had his birthday, and Mathew promised that he would get a new PS game.

"He knows that you and his mother have finished"

“But he knows you and his mother have finished,” says Rhys;

"Alaz managed to find her address"

however Mathew does not want him to miss out and is told that Alaz managed to find out their address.

“But I wouldn’t be able to face him and her,” confesses Mathew,

"I'll go with you, if you like"

so Rhys agrees to go with him and ask to see Ken.

"OK, just give me two minutes"

Mathew will be back in two minutes.

"I really have to go now"

Maya insists that she really has to go now and Iolo thanks her for lunch;  she replies, “Croeso,”

Iolo calls to his father

and at that moment his father is passing outside, so Iolo shouts for him,

"Dad, this is Maya"

to introduce him to the new pharmacist.

"Nice to meet you"

“Nice to meet you,” Maya says in English,

She receives a curt response . . .

but Siôn abruptly replies in Welsh and quickly walks away.

. . . which angers Iolo

Iolo apologises,

"I'm beginning to get used to it"

but she admits she is beginning to get used to it.

"What kind of music did she like?"

Hywel walks into the room and Gaynor, expecting it to be Cheryl, asks, “What kind of music did she like?   Sorry, thought you were Cheryl.

"We're arranging a memorial service for Mam"

“We’re arranging a memorial service for Mam.”

He emphasises that they have just refused to give Rhys a loan,

"I'm spending my money!"

but she growls, “I’m spending my money!”

"You don't mind telling me what to spend my money on"

He grumbles that she does not mind telling him what to spend his money on.

"Give him he loan if that's what you want"

“I thought you agreed with me about Rhys – fine – give him the loan if that’s what you want to do.”

"She has a history of stealing"

Hywel warns, “All I’m saying is just be careful – don’t give her money to buy things.   If you have to have them, buy them yourself.   I’m not sure we can trust her yet – she has a history of stealing.”

"So have I – do you trust me?"

Gaynor counters with, “I have a history of stealing, too – do you trust me?

Mathew and Rhys arrive at The Lewis Arms . . .

Mathew and Rhys approach the address given by Alaz – The Lewis Arms (actually in Heol Goch, Pentyrch, Cardiff).

. . . but find it closed

They find it closed, the notice on the door revealing that the family has gone to Ken’s Pokemon party.

"It would have been nice to see him"

“It would have been nice to see him,” groans Mathew, but Rhys maintains that it may be for the best,

"You should forget about Tegwen now"

and that he should forget about Tegwen now.   He argues that they do not need girls, anyway;

Mathew leaves the card and present

before he sadly walks away, Mathew puts down the card and present by the door.

"Did you have to be so rude to Maya?"

Iolo returns home, where his father is studying the laptop, and says, “Did you have to be so rude to Maya?”

"They're a problem for a small community"

Siôn maintains that people who move into the area are a problem for a small community like Cwmderi.

"Prejudice is a problem as well"

“Prejudice is a problem as well,” Iolo continues,

"Is she learning Welsh?"

and his father demands whether she is learning Welsh.

“OK – so if she can speak Welsh she’s a good person –

"If she can't speak Welsh, she's a bad person?"

“but if she can’t speak Welsh she’s a bad person,” deduces Iolo.

"It's not a matter of good and bad"

Siôn insists that it is not a matter of good and bad;

"That's how it sounds to me"

“Well, that’s how it sounds to me.”

“Anyone who moves into an area where the culture is under threat has a responsibility,” Siôn tells him and Iolo says that he sounds like a newspaper article, also arguing that the culture is not under threat.

"The culture of every rural area is under threat"

“The culture of every rural area is under threat – it’s not prejudicial to defend our communities and the language we speak,” Siôn rages, but Iolo maintains that it is no excuse to be rude.   “We can be polite after we’ve saved the language!”

"It would be nice if people like you supported her!"

Iolo cannot believe that he is so critical;  “And by the way, Maya is worried about the effect her presence is having in the village – and she is trying to learn Welsh, so it would be nice if people like you supported her!”

"If she is serious, I will"

If she is serious, Siôn says that he is happy to support her.

"Right – talk to her next time, then!"

“Right – talk to her next time, then!” snarls Iolo, “Want a drink?”   Siôn would prefer coffee.

"To hell with girls!"

Mathew and Rhys go to the Deri for a drink;  “To you and me – friends for ever and to hell with girls,” says Rhys,

"Is there any chance I could stay with you?"

“Is there are any chance I could stay with you?   Gaynor’s house is full.”

"You were buttering me up"

“So that’s why you offered to take me to see Ken, is it?   You were buttering me up?” Mathew alleges, but this is denied by Rhys, who says he was simply doing what any good friend would do.

“Aren’t you going back to Cardiff, then?” is the next question.

"I don't like living in a city"

Rhys says that the job is all right, but he does not like living in the city.

“I hardly knew anyone and it was hard to make friends,” he complains.

"Of course you can stay at the flat"

Mathew is pleased to have him back and assures him that he can stay at the flat.   Rhys is pushing it now;

"You don't happen to have a job as well?"

“You don’t happen to have a job for me as well, do you?”

"The boy wonder is back, then"

Griffiths, who has until now been sitting in the background, wryly comments, “The boy wonder is back, then – run out of people to deceive in Cardiff, have you?”

Rhys is left with his thoughts

Mathew has a phone call and Rhys is left by himself.

"Is everything all right after – you know?"

Cassie asks how he is;  “Is everything all right after – you know?   Tes told me – I was sorry to hear you’d finished.   Are you all right after Cardiff?”

"Forget about it!"

He rather brusquely tells her to forget about,

He looks a pathetic figure

and quickly goes  to sit elsewhere.

"How about an Elvis impersonator?"

At Llwyncelyn, the phone rings but Gaynor makes no attempt to answer it;  Cheryl is suggesting that they get an Elvis impersonator, as their mother did not have a lot of dignity.   “She had a heart the size of Jupiter, and that’s what’s important.”

"OK, I'll answer it, then"

Hywel comes to answer the phone, as Gaynor is not doing so;  they continue discussing whether to have flowers, and Cheryl advises that roses and gladioli were her favourites.   Gaynor proposes getting lots of white roses, although she is told that Mam liked colours – all colours.

"How about a pamper session later?"

“That’s enough talking for one day – how about a ladies pamper session later?” asks Cheryl, “When Esther’s home from school.”

Hywel looks cynical

Gaynor thinks the idea is lovely, but Hywel’s opinion obviously differs from this.

Cai is back from school

Cai comes back to Y Felin, where Siôn is still working;  “I met Iolo’s new friend earlier,” he says,

"Maya – she's pretty"

“Maya – she’s pretty!”

"Oh, no!"

Siôn suddenly groans, “Oh no!” as he realises that he has double-booked a simultaneous translation session online on Saturday;

"I must have forgotten to put it in the diary"

“I must have forgotten to put it in the diary – and I can’t pull out of either of them, as they are good clients, who have long-term contracts with me.”

"I could do one of them"

Cai volunteers that he could do one of them;  “I do it sometimes in school meetings.”

"That would be a great help"

Siôn is extremely grateful and does not know what to say,

Siôn is very grateful

giving him a hug, which surprises Iolo who has just come in.

"Things are getting better here, guys"

“Hey, things are getting better here, guys,” he remarks, “If you stopped telling me how to choose my friends, things would get better between us as well.”

"Are you following me around?"

In the Tomos ac Ellis office, Griffiths is looking at his laptop when Rhys saunters in and sits down.

"I want to ask you something"

“I want to ask you something,” he begins,

"Any chance of getting my old job back?"

“Is there any chance of getting my old job back?”

The one you left to go and make your fortune?"

“What?   The job you left in order to go to Cardiff to make your fortune?   Right, let me think . . . no!”

"You know how good I am at selling"

Rhys emphasises how good he is at selling,

"Kelly works here now"

but is informed that Kelly works there now.

"Kelly?   What does she know about houses?"

“What does she know about houses?” Rhys demands, and is told that it is about as much as he did when he first started.   Rhys amends his request to working part-time, or one day a week, but the answer is still the same – there is nothing for him.

"Close the door on your way out"

He is requested to close the door on his way out

"What's he doing back here?"

and Griffiths appears puzzled by why Rhys has suddenly reappeared.

Rhys goes straight back to the Deri and demands a pint;

"Did you leave your manners in Cardiff?"

“Did you leave your manners in Cardiff?” Cassie asks.

"I don't want you opening your mouth – right?"

Rhys tells her with a rather menacing tone in his voice, “I don’t want you opening your mouth again about what happened in Cardiff – right?”

"I've far better things to do than gossip about you"

She replies that she has far better things to do than to gossip about him, but offers him a word of advice;

"I hope you get then help you need"

“I hope you get the help you need.”

Rhys looks rather deflated

Rhys looks rather sheepish.
