29 December 2020

The front door of number 7 opens

Iolo is just doing up his boots when the front door of number 7 opens and Llio returns.   He seems overjoyed to see her;

"What are you doing here?"

“What are you doing here?”

"I'll go back home if you want"

and she offers to go back home if he wants.

He was under the impression she was spending the New Year with her mother, but she replies, “I thought it would be more fun here!”

"I've missed you, Llio"

He says that he has missed her, but Llio reminds him it has only been a couple of days.

“Yeah, I know – it’s just nice to see you, that’s all,” he grins, and she informs him that she misses him, too –

"That's why I came back"

that is the reason she came back.   She proposes to cook a meal tonight to celebrate her return, which he regards as perfect, and welcomes her home.

Mark has settled in at number 9
At number 9, Mark is watching the television;  he hears the sound of the toilet flushing upstairs and remarks, “Madam’s back, is she?”

"Lisa has nowhere else to go – unlike you!"

Cassie points out that Lisa does live there, as she has nowhere else to go, unlike Mark.

"I'm not going back to Mam, no way!"

“I’m not going back to Mam, no way!” he growls,

"This was supposed to be temporary"

so Cassie reminds him that this was supposed be a temporary arrangement.

"Yes, but I love it here, Cas"

“Yes, but I love it here, Cas,” he whines, “I enjoyed Christmas – but listen, I don’t want you to think I’m taking advantage.   I’ll go to the shop now to get us a few things – and you should have some money, too.   I’m happy to pay rent.”

"I want you and your mother to patch things up"

Cassie makes it quite clear, “I don’t want rent.   I want you and your mother to patch things up.   Don’t forget, she’s my friend, too.”

"She's on the vino in Paris!"

He groans that his mother is enjoying herself on the vino in Paris, and wonders who she is with.

“A little bird told me that she’s back – you could ask her yourself,” Cassie suggests, but he does not look keen to do that.

Gerwyn does not want to go back to the garage

At number 10, Gerwyn complains, “If Mam had won on the black jack in Vegas, I wouldn’t have to go back to the garage!”   Jaclyn thinks he is lucky that Britt wants him back, after he told her to stuff the job.   “But I’m still only the little helper, aren’t I?” he grumbles,

"It's hard to work for someone else, Dad"

and Tesni comments that it is hard to work for someone else – you cannot depend on anyone.

Jaclyn recommends that he just needs to sort things out and stop complaining;

"You don't even have a job, Tes"

“And Tes, you can’t talk – you don’t even have a job!”

"I'm trying to find the perfect job"

Tesni replies that she is trying to find the perfect job, and to work for someone who appreciates her;  “I deserve that – I won’t accept less than what I’m worth.”

Her mother snarls, “It’s a shame self-worth doesn’t pay, isn’t it?”

"Behave yourselves, you two"

Gerwyn leaves with the intention of improving his lot, and tells them to behave.   Tesni appears to have had an idea.

"If you want to make something special"

In the café, Iolo is talking on the phone, with Kelly eavesdropping with interest;  “No, you don’t have to go to any trouble,” he says, “All right, if you want to make something special – see you tonight!”

"Ooh, tonight, special – exciting!"

Kelly remarks, “Ooh, tonight, special – exciting!”   He points out that it was a private call, and she she protests that she could not help overhearing.

"Just having a meal with a friend, that's all

He explains that he is having a meal with a friend, that is all, but she enquires,

"You don't talk to me like that!"

“A friend with benefits, is it?   You and I are good friends, but you don’t talk to me like that!   Anyway, that’s how Jason and I started, you know, as good friends – and look at us now!”

"Would I approve, Iol?"

He wants her to stop it, but she insists there is no need to be embarrassed;  “Would I approve?” she asks, and he reveals that they are a lovely person.

"You need to stop moping around"

“Good, because you need to start enjoying yourself – instead of moping around, complaining about Tyler,” she instructs him.

He says that he is surprised the café is still going, with all the gossip that goes on there, and reiterates that it is only a meal tonight.   “But what about the afters, Iol?” Is her parting comment.

Mark comes out of the shop

Through the window, Mark can be seen coming out of the shop, and Tesni approaches him,

"We had a great Christmas without her"

asking if he has seen Lisa;  “Yes, more’s the pity,” he groans, “We had a great Christmas without her, just Cassie and me.”   Tesni goes across the road to confront her.

"I've come for the rest of my money"

Her repeated knocking brings Lisa to the door;  “I’ve come for the rest of my money,” declares Tesni,

"There it is, on the table"

and is told that it is on the table.

"It's £80 short!"

When she picks the envelope up, she finds that it is £80 short, and Lisa wonders whether she was expecting a Christmas bonus.

"We agreed on £250!"

“We agreed on £250 – there’s only £170 here!” Tesni moans, and is told a sorry tale about paying for advertising, bills and the phone.

"You've got a lot to learn, Tesni"

Lisa says Tesni has a lot to learn about running a business.

“I’ve got a lot to learn about you, too,” is Tesni’s reply, “You broke your promise –

"I'm fed up with being used!"

“I’m fed up with being used!” and with that she marches out of the house.

Britt is actually tackling the accounts

In the chip shop flat, when Colin comes in, Britt is trying to work something out,

"Garry uses a different system"

then realises that Gerwyn has also come up the stairs.   “Garry uses a different system to do the garage accounts,” she explains, and Colin advises that Gerwyn has a problem at the garage.

"Is there any sign of Garry coming back?"

“I was just wondering if there was any sign of Garry coming back,” he begns, “The thing is, one of our suppliers has increased their prices by more than 20%, and I wasn’t sure if I was supposed to order things or not.   I wasn’t sure if I had the authority to do that –

"I'm not the manager – like Colin here"

“I’m not the manager, am I?   I’m not like Colin here – you order things for the shop, don’t you?”

"Oh yes, I do the whole lot!"

Colin confirms, “Oh yes, I do the whole lot – the place would fall to pieces without my expertise – guaranteed!   “You’re looking for a promotion, are you?”

Gerwyn hopes for good news . . .

Gerwyn looks expectantly at Britt.

. . . but Britt will not part with any more money

Britt is out of her depth here, asking why she would make Gerwyn the manager, as she would have to pay him more, then, and that she does not intend to do that.

"Not long ago you told me to stuff the job!"

“It wasn’t that long ago you told me to stuff the job!”   she reminds him.   He explains that he was angry and did not mean it;  he does not know what he is allowed to do, and not allowed to do.

"Just do what you think is best, Gerwyn"

She simply, and rather vaguely, advises him, “Just do what you think is best – but no more talk about being manager, all right?”

Tesni has a proposition for Griffiths . . .

This time it is Tesni sitting on the seat in the back street, opposite Cysgod y Glyn;  she is looking rather depressed when Griffiths approaches,

. . . who tries to keep a low profile

anxious that no one should see him.   “Sorry, I don’t have much time – I’m meeting someone from the council for lunch.”

"I have some good news for you"

Tesni advises that she has some good news for him;  “I’m offering the same service as before with a 20% discount for my best customers.”

"And I'm one, am I?"

He is gratified to hear that he is one of them,

He moans about Lisa's price increase

and maintains that Lisa is not much of a businesswoman, putting up the prices last week.

“It’s not Lisa’s idea – I’m going to start working for myself,” Tesni explains,

"Returns and profit margins"

“It will give me more of an opportunity to look at returns and profit margins.”

"So Lisa doesn't know about this"

He realises that Lisa does not know that she is doing this, and regards it as rather sly.

Tesni would rather describe it as, “Sensible – but the offer is only for my special customers – the ones I can trust.”

"I'm not one to rush into anything"

Griffiths will give the offer some thought, maintaining that he is not one to rush into anything;  he has her phone number.

Tesni is not hopeful

As he walks away, Tesni does not look optimistic.

Mark changes the subject

Cassie returns to number 9 and immediately asks Mark, “Did you have a word with your mother?”   He is anxious to change the subject, wondering what was wrong with Tesni this morning, and relating that she wanted to see Lisa about something.

"I got us a quiche from the shop"

“What do you fancy for tonight, then?” he continues, “I got us a quiche from the shop.”   Cassie says that she is going out later, and suggests that he should make plans instead of staying there all day.

"You're not texting Mam, are you?"

“No, I’m happy enough doing that,” he casually replies, and as he sees Cassie typing something into her phone, worries, “You’re not texting Mam, are you?”

"How long do you intend to stay?"

She tells him that she is not, and is anxious to know how long he intends to stay.

"I knew it – you are texting Mam!"

“I knew it – you are texting Mam!” he sighs, but she reprimands him that she was under the impression he was staying for only a few days and then was going to find someone else – or go home.   He is quite adamant, “No way am I ever going back to Mam – how many more times?

"You won't even know I'm here"

“If you feel I’m making a mess, I’m sorry, all right?   I’ll clear up – you won’t even know I’m here.”

Gerwyn is taking it easy in the garage

Gerwyn is lying on the sofa in the garage, speaking to Britt on the phone;  “I’ve phoned around and the cheapest one is almost £500, especially if you want it done today.   It has to be done – it’s a security risk.   I’ll do my best to fix it myself, but I can’t promise anything.

"OK, I'll see what I can do"

“OK, I’ll see what I can do.”

He presses the remote control . . .

He smiles, presses the button on the remote control

. . . which flawlessly closes the shutter door . . .

and the roller shutter door on the garage effortlessly begins to close;

. . . and looks quite contented

he watches it and looks contented with his plan.

Mark comes out of APD . . .

As Mark is coming out of APD he encounters his mother;  “I was on my way to see you,” she says, and he replies that he is busy.

. . . and finds his mother with a peace offering

“I’ve missed you,” she goes on, offering him a bottle.

“You obviously haven’t, Mam – you’ve been off gallivanting in Paris!” he snarls at her,

"I know you weren't with Stacey"

“Who were you with, then?   Because I know you weren’t with Stacey.   I don’t want any more of your lies.”

"I didn't go to Paris"

Kath confesses that she did not go to Paris, and maintains that she just wanted some peace away from the village and all the arguments;  “Now, just come home, will you?” she entreats,

"It's not my home any more!"

but he states quite clearly that he will not come back to her house.   “It’s your home!” she stresses, but he does not regard it as such any more.

Cassie is coming out of the house, so Kath complains to her, “Do you see what you’ve done?   You’ve turned the boy against his mother!”

"Cassie has done no such thing!"

They both deny that she has done any such thing, and Cassie points out that she has been trying to get Mark to patch things up with his mother.

“Well, that obviously hasn’t worked!” is Kath’s response, as she stalks off round the corner.

"See what I have to put up with?"

“See what I have to put up with?” Mark demands, but Cassie simply walks away, as Iolo’s van pulls up outside number 7.

Llio frown at the herbs . . .

Inside the house, Llio is frantically preparing the meal,

. . . prepares the vegetables . . .

chopping vegetables,

. . . and deals with the frying pan

as well as watching over the frying pan,

Iolo comes home early . . .

and she is perturbed when Iolo arrives home early to collect his invoice book.

. . . and is banned from the kitchen

She forbids him to come into the kitchen, insisting, “I want this dinner to be a surprise!”

She has tidied up his invoice book and placed it on the shelf with the other books;  he fetches it and she carries on with her preparations, demanding if he is going now.

"I few hours ago you said you missed me"

“A few hours ago you said you missed me – now you want me to leave!” Iolo protests, and goes out again.

"I sorted it – and saved us £500!"

Gerwyn is at the chip shop flat once more;  “It took me a while to work it out, you know, but, yes, I sorted it – and saved us £500!” he tells Britt, “Well, you and Garry.”

"And you want some kind of thank you"

“And you want some kind of thank you, I suppose,” Britt suspects;

"Well, I do have more responsibility"

he admits that he does feel that he should be paid more if he has more responsibility.   He lists the tasks of ordering things and dealing with customers, on top of all the work as a mechanic.

"Yes, all right, Gerwyn"

In order to shut him up, Britt agrees to make him manager and thanks him for all his efforts;  he leaves the flat in a much better humour.

Tesni looks a right scruff in those jeans

Tesni, again in her tattered jeans, finds Griffiths waiting for her at the end of the alley;  “Thank you for agreeing to meet me,” he says, “I had a little idea over lunch which could improve your business.

This time he has an idea . . .

“I admire your enterprise, but I think you should offer something different to Lisa in order to stand out.   Don’t worry, it isn’t dodgy – it would be fun!   Meet your special clients face to face.”

. . . which Tesni finds unsettling

She is rather uneasy at this idea, but he stresses, “The clients will be doing everything –

"As one of your 'special clients'"

“for example, as one of your special clients, I could invite you out for dinner.   I could arrange a time that’s convenient for you at a place you want to go – within reason, of course.   I can’t arrange The Ritz!   As a businesswoman, I’m sure you can see that offering something different to Lisa would be beneficial to you.”

"Well, it does make sense, I suppose"

Tesni is forced to admit that it does make sense, and he assures her that he has years of experience in the world of business – he knows what he is doing.

"Me, a client you can trust" — yeah, right!

“I’ll tell you what – you could start this new venture with me, a client you can trust,” he proposes.

Tesni is receptive to this suggestion

She agrees to this,

"You'll go far with an attitude like that"

and he predicts that her business will go far with an attitude like that.   Tesni looks quite pleased with herself.

"It was a lovely meal . . ."

The meal has been consumed at number 7, and Iolo insists that he will do the washing up;  he says that it was a lovely meal, but Llio I can sense that he is lying.

". . . if a bit weird"

“It was a bit weird!” he concedes,” But you seemed to be enjoying it so much!”   She wonders if he thinks she is weird, but he most certainly does not, describing her as lovely.

"Seeing you're such an expert"

“Well, I’m looking forward to seeing what you’ll be cooking, seeing that you’re such an expert,” Llio tells him.   He says that he makes a mean spaghetti carbonara – and not out of a jar, either.   She will be looking forward to that.

"We'll have a posh coffee"

Iolo does not want more wine and suggests they have coffee instead;  “As the food was so special, we’ll have a posh coffee.”   She considers herself a very lucky girl, having Iolo’s posh coffee.

"It's only Prosecco, Ger"

At number 10 Gerwyn is celebrating his promotion with Prosecco;

"You're looking at the new manager of the garage!"

he tells Tesni, “You’re looking at the new manager of the garage – I’ve had an e-mail from Britt, so it’s official.   We’ll be £400 a month better off!”

"I'm also celebrating, Dad"

Tesni congratulates him, and is also celebrating as she is trying to sort her future out, and has a new venture;

"I can't say more than that"

“I can’t say more than that, because there’s a lot to sort out.”   Her father is proud of her

"You'll be on Dragons' Den next"

and predicts that she will be on Dragons’ Den next.

Harmony seems to have been restored

He thinks that the New Year is going to be a very good one for them.

"Thanks for a lush night, Iol"

Llio thanks Iolo, “For a lush night!   Right, I will clear these up and then up to bed, I think – I’m knackered!”

"We'll do that in the morning"

He urges her to forget about it, and they will do it in the morning.

She asks, “I won’t find you cleaning up at 4:00am in the morning, will I?”

"I promise I won't do that"

He promises he will not do that,

"I rather like this 'chilled out' Iolo!"

and she rather likes this ‘chilled out Iolo’.

Iolo takes her hands . . .

He asks if she will promise one thing;  as he holds her hands,

. . . and wants her to stay for ever

he says, “Never leave me again – promise you’ll stay here with me for ever.”

"Till death do us part – for ever – is it?"

“Till death do us part for ever, is it?” she asks, “It depends if you behave, doesn’t it?” and she decides she is going to bed.

A 'good night' peck on the cheek . . .

They kiss good night, and,

. . . gradually metamorphoses . . .

after a pause,

. . . into something else altogether

kiss again, more passionately, as the episode ends.
