12 April 2021

Lisa is suffering pain in her fingers . . .

Lisa is obviously in pain as she flexes her fingers

. . . and her side

and holds her aching side;  she awkwardly reaches forward to take the mirror

Her face is also rather battered

and look at the damage to her face.

Jason is minding the café for Kelly

In the café, Jason says, “I’m being a good boy, Cassie, helping out so that Kelly can have a break.”

Cassie asks for new chains to be fitted to the doors

She asks if he can fit new safety chains on both her front and back doors, the strongest he has in stock.

Tesni is listening to this

Tesni is listening to this conversation as she continues to explain that Lisa had some trouble with an ex;  “He pushed his way into the house without permission.”   Jason assures her that it is no problem, and he will be over to fit them as soon as he is finished there.

"He followed her home and beat her"

As Cassie heads towards the door, Tesni asks, “What was that about Lisa?”   Cassie replies that from what she understands, Lisa organised to meet an ex, and he followed her home and beat her.   She is now covered in bruises,

Tesni is distressed by this news

which Tesni find very distressing.

Breakfast-time in the shop flat

As Mathew eats his breakfast and Izzy makes some toast,

Eifion is not speaking to Mathew

Eifion walks into the room without a word;  “It’s going to be a long day if you act like this,” says Mathew.

"What am I expected to do?"

Eifion wonders what he is expected to do;  “Dance on the table because you’re kicking me on to the street?   Have you seen rent prices around here?” he demands,

"Use that money you got from Eileen"

but is recommended to use the money he got from Eileen for those fields.   “Most of that has gone to Cadno – I was months behind on child support,” Eifion grumbles, and Mathew tells him to take the day off if he needs to.

"Before you landed like a cuckoo!"

“We were getting on great, before you landed like a cuckoo!” Eifion snarls at Izzy,

"It's nothing to do with me, Eifion!"

but she points out that it is nothing to do with her.   “It’s obvious who wears the trousers here!” he growls as he goes to APD.

"Everyone in the village raises the money"

Up in the café flat, Jason is trying to persuade Kelly, “But a lot of places have done it – where everyone in the village raises enough money to buy the local pub.   Why not the café?”

"I don't want the humiliation, Jase"

Kelly protests that she does not want the humiliation of selling the café, as it is a sure sign of failure.

"Start a club to support the café"

“Sell shares in the café, is what I meant,” he continues, and she sneers that she will just contact her stockbroker.   “You can keep 90% in your name, Kelly, so that you can still be your own boss,” Jason explains starting a club to support the café, with a membership fee of £200, possibly, with discounts for members.   She is not very receptive to this, suggesting, “And up here can be the VIP lounge?”

"Not if Garry Monk wants it as part of his empire!"

“Not if Garry Monk wants it as part of his empire!” she snarls, “I don’t want to be a business partner, OK?” so then he suggests plan B –

"I'm sure everyone will support you"

He is sure that everyone around there would be prepared to support her, just as a thank you for staying with them during the lockdown;  “The café is part of the village, isn’t it?   Like Bethania and the Deri and the chip shop – nobody wants to see it close.”

"Nobody more than me"

“Nobody more than me,” she sighs, and he anxious to try to sell the idea to the locals.

"I can't be sure it was Bill"

Back at number 10, Aled tells Tesni that she cannot be sure that it was that Bill;  “But I was supposed to meet him the other night — I feel awful.   It’s my fault for asking her to sort it out.”

"No point in feeling sorry for myself"

Her mother comes downstairs, trying to pretend that nothing is wrong;  “I’m moving on – there’s no point feeling sorry for myself –

"Lamb and mint sauce for dinner?"

“I thought we could have a family dinner.   Lamb and mint sauce?”

"Sorry, I'm going out, Mam"

Tesni replies that she has planned to go out tonight, and coincidentally so has Aled.

Jaclyn says that she has loads of washing to do anyway,

"I'll teat you to lunch in the café instead"

so Aled will treat her to lunch in the café instead;

"She's trying her best, you know"

he whispers to Tesni that her mother is trying her best.

"It's Lisa I'm concerned about"

Tesni is not concerned about her, but Lisa, which is where she is going now.

Lisa checks to see who is at the door

Lisa looks to see who it is knocking at the door, then reluctantly lets Tesni in;

"Want your job back, do you?"

“You want do your job back, do you?   I knew you’d come back with your tail between your legs,” she snaps.

"Did Bill do that?"

“Did Bill do that?” demands Tesni,

"It was a misunderstanding"

and the injuries are described as a misunderstanding.   “Cassie said an ex attacked you in the house – I thought you were meeting Bill in a hotel,” Tesni goes on.

"He thinks he can punish us"

“The hotel cancelled the room, and he offered £500 on top of the fee to come to my home,” Lisa explains, “He thought I was you – anyone he thinks works in the sex industry.   He thinks he can punish us.   I was questioned by the police last night and said he was an ex, but I was not giving his name – I don’t want to press charges.   I can’t tell the police, or Cassie will find out.”

"It's not right that he gets away with it!"

Tesni protests that it is not right that he should get away with that;  Lisa maintains, “I have friends who will sort him out – a better punishment than three months in prison!”

Eifion's search for accommodation is fruitless

In the Deri, Eifion has been ringing round for accommodation, without any success.   When he and Gaynor walk in, Hywel comments, “It doesn’t cost anything to smile, Eifion!”

"I'm homeless – thanks to your daughter!"

“I’m homeless again – thanks to your daughter!” he rages at Gaynor, “She doesn’t like sharing her flat with an ex!”

"What?  Izzy's back?"

Gaynor is very surprised that Izzy is back, and is told, “Yes – and she’s acting like a real madam!   Don’t you two talk or what?”

"Why hasn't she been in touch?"

“Why hasn’t she been in touch to say she’s back?” Gaynor demands,

"Probably spent all the money"

and Hywel predicts that she has spent money she was given.   She cannot believe that, but will go over to see her daughter.   He offers to come with her, as he does not want Izzy taking advantage again.

"No – leave this to me, Hywel!"

“No – leave this to me!” says Gaynor.

Jason tried his sales technique

Jason is giving Aled the ‘hard sell’ in the café;  “10% discount – you’ll get your subs back in no time at all,”

"Clash of interest with Tapas"

but it is pointed out that there is a clash of interest with Tapas.   “There’s no competition between Tapas and this place,” Jason insists, “They serve olives and cheese and vol-au-vents over there.

"You get food to put hairs on your chest here!"

“You get food to put hairs on your chest here!”

Aled is unable to afford £200,

Then he tries to interest Jaclyn

so Jason shifts his aim to Jaclyn;  “I often see you and Gerwyn in here – and the children.   The whole family could take advantage.”

"We're not together any more!"

Her reply is, “Gerwyn can do whatever he likes – we’re not together any more!” and with that she stalks out of the café.

"Do you have more members than the rugby club yet?"

Jason apologises to Kelly that he did not know, and she sarcastically asks whether the cafe’s club has more members than the rugby club yet.

"A more European feel?"

Jason says that there is a lot of interest, but she proposes, “Perhaps we should make coming here more of an experience – you know, a more European feel – make people feel like they’re on holiday.”

Jason does not support that idea, pointing out, “This is Caffi Meic – the people of Cwmderi want grease and sugar, not some continental, you know . . . Trust me, Kelly, I’ll find you members – all right?”

"We ought to have a plan B, just in case"

She suggests that they ought to have a plan B, just in case.

"It's going to be a huge success, Kelly"

Jason, on the other hand, is confident that the club is going to be a huge success, or at least that is what he tells Kelly.

Izzy is doing some housework

Izzy is cleaning in the kitchen when her mother arrives in the shop flat;  “I thought Eifion was pulling my leg when he said you were back,” she says, but Izzy explains that it was a last-minute decision.

"I wasn't expecting to see you for months"

“I wasn’t expecting to see you for months,” Gaynor continues, “Have you and Mathew sorted everything out?”

‘He’s apologised and we understand each other again –

"Aren't you glad i'm back?"

“aren’t you glad I’m home?” Izzy wonders,

"Why are you back?"

but her mother cannot understand why it is she is back.

“If I was young, full of adventure and had £10,000 in my pocket, I wouldn’t be home so quickly,” she says.   Izzy’s excuse is that she missed Cwmderi –

"There's no money left, anyway"

and there is no money left, anyway.   She does not feel guilty because she gave it to a good cause, the girls’ school in Thailand.

Gaynor is dumbfounded

Gaynor cannot believe this,

"The school was worse off than when I left last time"

as Izzy explains, “It broke my heart when I got there – the school was worse off than when I left last time.”

"You gave all that money away?"

Her mother is angry that she gave all the money away, and Izzy alleges, “They need money to buy equipment –

"What's the point of a school without books and computers?"

“what’s the point of a school without books and computers?”   Gaynor is left speechless.

Eileen and Sioned are back from their holiday

At Penrhewl, Eileen is filling the kettle for a cup of tea when Mathew comes in and welcomes them home;

"I didn't realise how hard it is"

“I’m very happy to see you two back – I didn’t realise how hard it is to make sure the stock is alive and healthy.”

"When you go away, the problems start"

Eileen recalls the advice she and Denzil were given when they started farming was not to go away, because that is when the problems start.   He reports that there were no problems, and asks how the holiday went – under the circumstances.

"I'm glad I avoided marrying DJ!"

Sioned is upbeat;  “I’m glad I managed to avoid marrying DJ before it was too late!”

"We're back together"

Mathew advises that Izzy is home and that they are back together, which Sioned regards with scepticism;

"Relationships are not worth it!"

“You’ll regret it!   Relationships are not worth it – you’ll only get hurt.

Izzy shows her mother what she was given

As Gaynor is still looking stunned, Izzy points out the bangle she was given by one of the teachers, but her mother maintains that it does not seem enough somehow.

"Why aren't you proud of me?"

“Why aren’t you proud of me?” Izzy demands.

"So you don't have to run home like this"

“Because that money was to sustain you over the next few months – so that you don’t have to run home like this!” Gaynor growls, and Izzy wants to know what she is getting at.

"Having you round the village won't help me move on!"

“I’m still dealing with the fact that I almost killed Angharad – and seeing you around the village won’t help me move on, will it?” she snarls.

"That £10,000 was to get rid of me?"

“So that £10,000 was to get rid of me?” Izzy realises, “You taught a lesson to a woman who was trying to ruin your life.”

"Don't you fancy continuing doing the good work?"

Gaynor asks if she does not fancy going back to Thailand to continue this good work;  she feels that the two of them need some time apart, so they can forget everything.

“Are you worried that I’m going to tell someone?” demands Izzy, and her mother replies that may possibly be the case, so she is told to get out;

Izzy yells at her mother to get out . . .

“I’m serious – just leave!”

. . . which Gaynor duly does

Gaynor does so, and Izzy looks very distressed.

"Not a word about Bill!"

With the judicious application of makeup by Tesni, Lisa is now looking more normal, but warns, “Not a word about Bill.”

"I'm ready for the catwalk again"

Cassie arrives through the back door, and is told, “I’m ready for the catwalk again, thanks to Tesni.”

"That makes everything all right, does it?"

“So a little powder and lipstick makes everything all right, does it?” enquires Cassie, and Lisa is sure that make-up has concealed many a bad night that she has had.   “You have suffered a serious assault,” she goes on, and Tesni takes her leave of them.

"I'm not going to let him ruin my life"

“Why don’t you want to give this ex’s name?” Cassie further demands, and Lisa angrily says that it is not important;  she is not going to let him ruin her life.   She maintains that she has already forgotten about it, but is accused of being unreasonable;  “A man like that belongs in jail!” but she is urged to leave it.

"I want the truth – and I want it now!"

Cassie is convinced that she is hiding something;  “I want the truth – and I want it now!”   Lisa escapes upstairs.

"Give Mam a cwtch for me!"

In the Deri, Jason is on the phone to Dai;  “Thank you very much – go back to sleep now – give Mam a cwtch for me!”

"The first member of the 'Friends of the Café Club'!"

Then he announces to Kelly, “The first member of the ‘Friends of the Café Club’!”

Kelly is less than impressed;

"Fat lot of use he'll be in Australia!"

“Fat lot of use he’ll be in Australia!” but is assured that he will be back in the café, using his 10% discount, in no time.

Jason spots his next victim

Then he notices Eifion, sitting in the corner, and goes to try his selling techniques on him.

"Some businesses aren't worth saving"

Sara approaches Kelly and says, “A word to the wise – some businesses aren’t worth saving.”

"Since when are you an expert?"

“Since when are you a expert in business and personal matters?” Kelly responds, and is told that Sara tried everything to keep Awyr Iach going,

"Throwing money into a bottomless pit"

but she was just throwing money into a bottomless pit.   She advises Kelly to sell.

"Two different ball games, Sara"

Kelly has other ideas;  “The café and Awyr Iach – two different ball games.   People need to eat – buying a rucksack is a life choice.”

"You're asking me to pay to save Kelly's job?"

Over in the corner, Eifion rages, “You’re asking me to pay £200 to save Kelly’s job?”   Jason stresses that he is trying to save the café,

"Where people socialise – and eat bacon baps"

as somewhere for people to socialise – and eat bacon baps.   “Are you offering bed and breakfast in the price?” Eifion wonders, but Jason emphasises that they do not have the room.

"I'll be out on the street again tonight, then"

“Well, I’ll be out on the street again tonight, then,” he groans.

"There are dozens of lonely pensioners"

“I’m sure there are dozens of lonely pensioners living in half-empty homes around here, who would love to have a handy lodger like you – you know how to make a Horlicks, don’t you?”

"You're not as stupid as you look, Jason"

This puts an idea into Eifion’s head;  “You know, you’re not stupid as you look, Jason!” he remarks, as he picks up his phone.

"Hot milk boiling over is the problem"

Jaclyn is cleaning the hob of the cooker;  “I can’t remember the last time this had a spring clean,” she tells Tesni.   “Hot milk boiling over is the problem – only your father did that   Odd, isn’t it, the things you miss?”

"You miss him, too, don't you?"

Tesni has not said a word, and her mother assumes that she also misses her Dad;  “I don’t think it’s hit you that your Mam and Dad are living apart.”

"I'm not a little girl any more, Mam"

Tesni replies that she is not a little girl any more, and Jaclyn realises that they have to discuss things as adults, and keep things open.

"We all need space to deal with things"

Tesni is of the opinion that they all need space to deal with things, but her mother anticipates, “I think he’ll regret leaving so quickly –

"He'll be back soon, you'll see"

“he’ll be back soon, you’ll see.”   Tesni is going for a lie down, as she does not feel very special,

"Your father and I are always here for you"

and Jaclyn assures her, “Your father and I are always here for you – you know that.”

Jaclyn is very dispirited

She looks very downhearted.

Izzy sits alone . . .

Izzy is sitting on the sofa, clutching a cushion,

. . . and in tears

and is in tears.

"Arguing with Izzy isn't a nice feeling"

Gaynor arrives back and refuses a glass of wine, saying that she needs a clear head;  “Arguing with Izzy isn’t a nice feeling.”

"You've always done everything you can for her"

Hywel points out that she has always done everything she can for Izzy, and she should not feel bad.

"I might have been a little bit mean to her"

“I might have been a little bit mean to her earlier,” Gaynor acknowledges,

"She's always taken advantage of you"

but is reminded that Izzy has always taken advantage of her mother.

"Angharad got her revenge, didn't she?"

“What a mess – but there we are – Angharad got her revenge, didn’t she?”

Hywel stresses that Izzy should be building bridges with Gaynor, if the relationship means anything to her.

Lisa comes downstairs

Cassie is tapping away on the laptop when Lisa comes back downstairs;  “Right, are you going to tell me?”  she demands, “Is this ex a local guy?”

"You're like a dog with a bone!"

Lisa complains that she is like a dog with a bone, and Cassie goes on, “Does he have a history of hitting women?

"This isn't the first time he's hit you, is it?"

“This isn’t the first time he’s hit you, is it?   That’s why you don’t want to give his name to the police – what he’s done to you isn’t right!   Look, I had a friend who was in an abusive relationship for years – you need to write down every time he tries to contact you – collect evidence.”

"It was a client!"

Lisa is getting tired of this and blurts out, “It was a client!   I know I shouldn’t have agreed, but he offered me a lot of money.

"I'll never have another client over here"

“If it worries you, I’ll never have another client over here, I promise.”

"No, you certainly won't!"

“No, you certainly won’t!” is Cassie’s angry reply,

"I want you out – the sooner, the better!"

“Because I want you out – the sooner, the better!”

Lisa is rather put out by this

Predictably, Lisa does not look happy about this.
