Lisa has packed her bags

As Lisa comes downstairs, carrying her belongings,

"I'm not one to hold a grudge"

Cassie points out that she cannot be blamed for asking her to leave.   “Don’t worry, I’m not one to hold a grudge,” says Lisa, “A friend in London has offered me a place for a while.”

"Does this friend know what you do?"

Cassie wonders if this friend knows exactly what she does, and is informed, “She’s in the same business – she’s made enough money to retire.”   Cassie asks why she does not stop doing it;

Lisa insists she has years left

“That’s what happens in this profession, when clients don’t find you attractive any more – but I’ve got years left!” Lisa boasts, “Thanks for the advice but I’ve been in this game long enough.”

"You're going to a city full of dangers"

“But you’re going to a city full of dangers,” Cassie reminds her, but she is attracted by the business, under the impression that cockneys have more cash than people around Cwmderi.

"I still owe you some rent"

Cassie will not accept her outstanding rent, but tells her to forget it.   Commenting that all good things come to an end,

Cassie is glad to see the back of Lisa

Lisa walks out of the house.

"Look at this Ger – steaks!"

Mark comes in the back door of Maes-y-Deri, and immediately notices some steaks marinating in a bowl;  he is very excited by this, as is Gerwyn.   “It’s like a five star hotel in here!” Mark comments,

Gerwyn will get some cans from the shop

and Gerwyn will go to the shop to get some cans to go with the steak.

Tyler finds a scene of disarray

Tyler arrives at number 7 to find the place in a state of disarray and no sign of Iolo.

"Are you sure you're OK, Iol?"

When he phones, he discovers that Iolo is out on an emergency call, and is concerned about him;  he will go and get Greta now, but asks, “Are you sure you’re OK?”

"So the £5 specials are now £5.50!"

Colin is sitting in the café, looking critically at the menu;  “So the £5 specials are now £5.50!”

"Obviously you didn't fail maths, Col"

Kelly congratulates him, and can see that he did not fail maths,

"10% is a significant increase"

but he points out, “10% is a significant increase – inflation is no more than one or two per cent.”

"The only other option is to close the caff"

“The only other option is to close the caff – you’d be up in arms then!” she replies, but he argues that she should be dropping her prices to get the punters in.

"Stack 'em high, sell 'em cheap!"

“Stack ’em high, sell ’em cheap!” he continues, but she reminds him that people are not queueing outside the shop.

"Discounts for members and all that"

“Jason wants to start a Caff Club – you know, discounts for members and all that,” Kelly informs him;  Colin has already been approached

"Yes, Jason tried to persuade me"

and Jason tried to persuade him, but he regards £200 as rather excessive.

"I want to own my own café"

“The only other option is to sell shares – but I don’t want to do that, Col, because I want to own my own café,” she says, mournfully.

A cappuccino will be £5 before long!"

Then Anita comes in, and he tells her that the café is going upmarket;  “A cappuccino will be £5 before long!”

She is surprised to see that the prices have increased;

"Anyone would think the café's in financial difficulty"

“Anyone would think the café’s in financial difficulty,” and Colin agrees that it looks that way.

Kath practises saying 'Rioja'

In the Deri, Kath is learning the correct pronunciation of the word ‘Rioja’ from Cassie, who can see that she is going to a lot of effort, and comments that today is the third date, the significance of which is lost on Kath.

“It’s an important night, then,” Cassie smiles, “Don’t pretend to be innocent.”

"What are you talking about, Cassie?"

Kath has no idea what she is talking about,

"Most couples go 'under the duvet' for the first time"

so it is spelled out to her, “The third date – it’s on the third date that most couples go under the duvet for the first time – not that I’ve waited that long!”

Kath regards this as quite distasteful

Kath is disgusted by this and walks out of the pub, as Cassie warns her not to eat him alive.

"I didn't want to go without saying anything"

Lisa has called at number 10 to tell Tesni of her plans;  “I didn’t want to go without saying anything.”   Tesni deduces that she is running away because of Bill, but is enlightened that Cassie has asked her to move out;  “That’s how I am anyway – I never stay anywhere long.”

"You told me it's a lonely place"

Tesni cannot understand why she is going to London;  “You told me it’s a lonely place.”

"An old friend has asked me to stay"

Lisa maintains that she is excited, as an old friend, she has not seen for ages, has asked her to stay.

"Will you come back now and again?"

Tesni is anxious to know whether she intends to come back now and again, but the answer is noncommittal.   Lisa leaves the house, and Tesni is disappointed.

"Who was that?"

Aled comes downstairs and is told that Lisa is leaving Cwmderi;  “That’s an excuse for a session – no-one will miss her!” he says, enthusiastically,

Tesni does not look at all happy

but Tesni is downhearted.

"Lucky I ordered before the prices went up"

Colin remarks to Kelly, “It’s lucky I ordered before the prices went up –

"The trick is not to offend your bread and butter customers"

“the trick is not to offend your bread and butter customers.”   She tells him that if she wants advice, she will put a suggestion box on the counter, but he continues, “I remember a café in Lampeter, offering free drinks with every meal – it was so popular!

"There was always a big queue for the toilet!"

“There was always a big queue for the toilet!”

Kelly is quite pleased when he goes . . .

Noticing Kelly’s disaproving look, he thinks that he had better go, and wishes her good luck.

. . . but then Anita has her say

Anita cannot wait to give Kelly the benefit of her advice;  “It’s not a good idea to tell the customers that the café’s in trouble.   How bad are things?   Are you in a lot of debt?”

"It's just cash flow problems"

Kelly simply describes it as a cash flow problem and that the café is overdrawn.

"We run this place together!"

“Well, why didn’t you tell me?” whines Anita, “We’re a team – we run this place together.”

"But at the end of the day, I'm the boss!"

She is told that, at the end of the day, Kelly is the boss, and protests that they could have at least had a staff meeting.

"That's what we're having at the moment"

Kelly maintains that is what they are having, and Anita turns argumentative, “I’m trying to help you here, Kelly!”

Kelly reveals that she has plans;  “I’m getting the village involved in the ‘Friends of the Café Club’ – perks for members, and all that.”

"Any more big plans I don't know about?"

Anita wonders if Kelly has any other big plans she should know about – she is irked because the customers know more than she does.

"Ah – that's what's annoying you!"

“Ah – that’s what’s annoying you!” Kelly laughs, and reminds her aunt,

"This isn't about you – so back off!"

“This isn’t about you – so back off!”

When his mother returns to Maes-y-Deri, Mark informs her that there are cans in the fridge if she wants one.

"Who moved the steaks?"

She notices that the steaks have been moved and is angry;

"Official dinner to welcome Ger, is it?"

“Its an official dinner to welcome Ger, is it?” asks Mark.

"This is a special dinner got Brynmor!"

“Stop your nonsense!” is her reply, “This is a special dinner for Brynmor!”   Mark wonders why there are three steaks, and suspects that Brynmor must be a vulture.   She explains, “One is a back-up, in case I make a mess of things.”

"I heard that he's a vegan, Mam!"

Her son jokes that he has heard Brynmor is a vegan;  “So Ger and I had better have those!”

"I don't want to see either of you in the house tonight"

She makes it clear that she does not want to see either of them in the house tonight,

"We'll go to the Deri, out of your way"

and Gerwyn promises that they will go to the Deri, out of her way;

"Mind you don't hurry back!"

she instructs them not to hurry back.

Mark regards Brynmor as, “A tight devil – he should take you out and treat you to dinner!”   She makes it quite clear that he is not having those steaks, and that is the end of it.

"I made some chips specially"

He has already prepared home-made chips, but she tells him he can keep them, as she will be having Dauphinoise Potatoes, pointing out that Brynmor is stylish, and orders them out of the house.

Some vacuuming is going on at number 7

When Garry returns to number 7, he finds Tyler doing the vacuuming;

"What do you think you're doing?"

“Oi!   What do you think you’re doing?” he shouts, and Tyler answers that he is doing the ironing, enquiring if Garry would like a lesson in using a vacuum cleaner.

"I'm looking after Greta"

“Iolo had a call-out and I’m looking after Greta,” he goes on, but Garry maintains that does not give him the right to behave as if he lived here.   Tyler protests, “I’m just trying to help – Greta can be a handful.”

Garry pulls out the plug and wants some peace

Furiously, Garry pulls out the plug to stop the vacuum cleaner and stresses that he just wants a bit of peace when he comes home;  “You should look after her in the Deri –

"Be grateful I let you stay there!"

“and be grateful I let you stay there!”

Tyler wonders why Garry has to have a go at him all the time;

"We should be helping Iolo"

“We should be helping Iolo at the moment, not making things difficult by falling out!” he rages.

"What's wrong with Iolo?"

Garry wants to know what is wrong with Iolo, as it sounds as if there is something, by the way he is talking.

“There’s nothing wrong with him – I just don’t want him coming home to find us arguing again, OK?” Tyler snarls, and Garry is suspicious.

Brynmor arrives at Maes-y-Deri . . .

Brynmor arrives for his date;  both he and Kath are nervous and do not know what to say;  he enquires whether she prefers chocolates, flowers or wine.   She invites him to sit down and make himself at home,

. . . and compliments Kath

and he compliments her on her perfume, hoping he has not gone overboard with his aftershave.

"I've got some Rioja"

After an awkward pause, she asks if he would like a drink;  “I’ve got some Rioja – it’s my favourite – I like the way they used a variety of grapes.”

He recites the varieties of grapes

Immediately, he reel off the names of the grapes – Tempranillo, Grenache and Graciano.

By now, Kath is well out of her depth

“Yes, I like them as well, but this is my favourite,” she says, well out of her depth by now.

"There are no limits how much I can drink"

He says that he came over by taxi, so there are no limits to how much he can drink tonight

Kelly is deep in thought

Up in the café flat, Kelly is alerted by the text tone on her phone;

"Jason, someone's interested in buying 20 shares!"

she calls to Jason, “Someone’s interested in buying twenty shares in the café,”

"That's great news, Kelly!"

and he is very surprised.   “I could do loads with an investment like that,” she says, but looks less than excited.

"Dylan"

When Jason enquires as to the identity of this investor, he is told, “Dylan.”

"There's no such thing as free money from him!"

This immediately angers Jason;  “There’s no such thing as free money from someone like him!”

"I can't control who invests"

Kelly reminds him she cannot control who invests, but he rages, “Dylan Moneybags?   Come on – you’d be better off selling the cafe than having a business partner like him!”

"At this rate, I might have to!"

She points out that at this rate she might have to.

"I wanted to use the oven!"

Tyler is cooking something in the oven when Garry protests that he wanted to use it;  “I’ve made enough food for you, too,” Tyler points out, but that is not good enough for Garry.   “Stop behaving so childishly,” Tyler advises him.

"Hanging around, trying to impress Iolo"

Garry accuses him of acting like a little boy;  “Hanging around, trying to impress Iolo.   There’s nothing wrong with him, is there?

"Pathetic – chasing him like this!"

“You’re just trying to get me to let you come and go as you please.   I don’t want a threesome for dinner, thank you.   Pathetic – chasing him like this!   This is my house, and I don’t want you landing here all the time.”

"Don't make things difficult for Iol"

“Hey – don’t make things difficult for Iolo, OK?” urges Tyler.   Garry wonders how long he has needed Tyler to hold his hand,

"That's between him and me!"

and is informed that it is a matter between him and Iolo.

"Well, find your own place, then!"

“All right – if you want to keep secrets, find your own place!’ Garry threatens him.

"He's got cancer!"

Tyler has become so angry that he blurts out, “He’s got cancer!”

This shuts Garry up, temporarily, at least

which seems to stop Garry in his tracks.

"Kathleen Pearl – I love that name"

Brynmor thanks Kath for an excellent meal, and comments, “Kathleen Pearl – I love that name!”   She wonders how he was aware of that and he explains that he looked at the register for the Spanish lessons.

"What about you, then – Brynmor Napoleon?"

“What about you, then – Brynmor Napoleon?”

"That is a bit embarrassing!"

He finds that discovery embarrassing, explaining that his father was a history teacher, and asks if she would like more wine,

"It's not etiquette to open my own bottle"

in which case he will have to open his bottle, although he maintains it is not etiquette for him to open his own bottle.

"Well, it's the only one we've got"

Kath does not bother with things like that, and in any case they only have the one bottle.

"Don't you dare come back, or I'll kill you!"

She hears her phone ringing, and finds that it is Mark, asking how the evening is going;  “Don’t you dare come back here, or I’ll kill you!” she tells him.

"Thank you, Napoleon"

Then she turns to Brynmor, who is pouring out the wine, and remarks, “Thank you, Napoleon.”

Tesni is sitting quietly

Tesni is sitting quietly in the Deri, and does not want to join her father and Mark, who are probably talking about darts.   Cassie wonders if she is OK,

"I'm celebrating Lisa leaving"

and she says that she is celebrating the fact that Lisa has left:  “I don’t understand why she has gone, though.”

"I'm looking forward to having the house to myself"

Cassie is looking forward to having the house to herself, and Tesni maintains that no one will miss her;  “I gave the impression that we were friends when she was my boss.”   Cassie says that she is not a good example to anyone,

"I regret agreeing to work for her"

and Tesni regrets agreeing to work for her;  “Degrading myself like that.”

"There are better things out there for you"

Cassie points out that there are better things out there than that business;  “You’ve got enough in your head!”

"I'm determined to succeed"

Tesni says that she is determined to succeed, without Lisa or anyone else.

She symbolically removes Lisa from her list of contacts

Then she picks up her phone, scrolls to Lisa’s entry and decisively deletes it.

"I can help you clear up, Kath"

As Kath reclines on the sofa, Brynmor offers to help her clear up, but she will leave it until the morning.

"I've had a wonderful time tonight"

He says that he has had a wonderful time tonight, and she agrees.

"Do you want a little nightcap?"

“Do you want a little nightcap?” she asks,

"You're a naughty woman!"

and he describes her as a naughty woman.

"We've got some whisky here"

“There’s no Horlicks here, though – we’ve got whisky.”

He points out that his taxi will be there before long, but she insists that he does not have to go home – he might as well stay.

Then he says that his taxi is outside . . .

Then in the nick of time, his phone sounds, and he says that his taxi has arrived outside.

. . . and suddenly seems very eager to get away . . .

He seems in a great hurry as he assures her that he has had a lovely night, which has been special;  “The food was very nice . . .”   He cannot wait to leave the house,

. . . leaving Kath in a state of confusion

which confuses Kath.

"He was in a hurry"

The very next moment, Mark returns;  “He was in a hurry – didn’t the date go well?”

"I don't think we suit each other"

His mother merely says that it was all right, but does not  think they suit each other, judging him to be too much of a snob for her.

"That's what I said from the start"

This does not surprise Mark, as he had said that from the start.

"You're welcome to have that spare steak"

“You’re welcome to have that spare steak, if you want,” she tells him, but he has only come back to collect his wallet, which he had forgotten.   Gerwyn has already bought several rounds,

Kath declines the invitation to join him

but Kath does not want to join them.
