"Dad, can I borrow some money?"

Guto comes downstairs and asks his father, “Dad, can I borrow some money?   For Spanish books – I’m skint!”   Gerwyn is quite willing to give him some money, 

"Is that enough?"

and asks if that is enough;  Guto shakes his head and says, “I didn’t come up with the reading list – 

"I'll do some shifts at Tapas instead"

“look, I’ll do some shifts in Tapas instead.”

“No, I don’t mind helping with the course,” says Gerwyn, 

"Books are more expensive than when you were young"

and Guto points out that books are a bit more expensive than when he was young.   “Sorry, but that’s all I’ve got,” Gerwyn tells him, “Thanks would be nice,” so Guto says so, not very convincingly.

Jaclyn comments that he has been like that with her for months, 

"It's something to do with this new girl"

and Gerwyn suspects that it is something to do with that new girl.   “I wouldn’t like to be their age, with all that uncertainty and worry,” she says, and he recalls that he always used to be nervous before their meetings, which she finds quite amusing;  he says that half of the boys used to fancy her.

"No-one came close to you!"

“Well, no-one came close to you – and that hasn’t changed!” she reassures him, and is now going food shopping;  

"Can I have £100 for shopping?"

she jokingly holds her hand out for some money, but is unsuccessful.

Aled sees Dylan . . .

Aled comes round the corner, by the chip shop, carrying a box when he sees Dylan, 

". . . on his phone by the café"

over by the café, talking on the phone.   Dani informs him that the next appointment is not for half an hour, and suggests that he has his lunch, 

Aled's mind is elsewhere"

but Aled is too busy watching Dylan to take any notice.

“You’re not thinking about Tyler, are you?” she demands, 

"Does he regret telling people about me?"

but he thinks that Dylan regrets telling people about him, as they have not spoken for ages.   

"Well, go and talk to him now"

“Go and talk to him now,” Dani instructs him, but she is too late, 

"Come over to the café"

as he comes across the road and invites Aled and Dani to the café for a coffee.

Aled refuses the offer, and Dylan continues that he was going to get a takeaway tonight and would like Dani to join him.   

"Aled's coming over, aren't you, Al?"

Instead, she invites him to come over to the Deri, “Because Aled’s coming over, aren’t you, Al?”   Dylan does not want to interfere with any plans they have made, 

"The more the merrier"

but is told, “The more the merrier – see you later!”

Tyler waits in the car park

Tyler’s car is parked at the hospital, and his phone rings;  “Are you on your way out?” he asks Iolo, 

"Did you get the results?"

“Did you get the results?   What did they say?”

Guto checks that the coast is clear . . .

Guto arrives back at number 10, and checks to make sure that he is alone;  

. . . subsides into the chair . . .

he slumps down down in the chair, then reaches into his pocket, 

. . . and takes out his 'waccy baccy'

taking out a small bag of some herbal matter.   However, he quickly replaces it when the back door opens;  he tells his father that he needed to pick up a few things, and has got the books he needed.

"They're e-books, Dad"

“That bag looks a bit light, considering how much they cost!” Gerwyn complains, but he is told that they are e-books;  Guto explains that you read them on your phone.   “Are you going to see that girl today, then?” Gerwyn asks.

"I'm going to see her in the library now"

“Yes, actually – I’m going to see her in the library now, so I’d better go,” Guto tells him, about to leave the house.   His father blames old age, 

"What was the name of that girl?"

but alleges that he has forgotten the name of this girl;  “Alesha,” is the reply, and Gerwyn thinks it strange that Tesni said her name was Alys.   

"She must have misheard"

“She must have misheard,” says Guto.

Ray has brought the photographs

Ray has brought over the photographs for Eifion;  “Like I said, I’m back and forth at the moment, passing in the lorry.   

"New Quay in 1982, I think"

“That one was taken in New Quay – 1982, I think.   Haydn thought there was something special in those shades.”

"I've been thinking about what you said"

“When he was happy,” Eifion comments, “I’ve been thinking about some of the things you said yesterday – about depression,” 

"I always suspected there was more to Dad's death"

but Ray is very reluctant to talk about it now.   Eifion continues, “I always suspected there was more to Dad’s death – every time I asked, I never got a straight answer.   I have a right to know!   

"It wasn't a tractor accident, was it?"

“It wasn’t a tractor accident, was it?”   

Ray shakes his head

Ray sadly shakes his head.

Iolo arrives home . . .

Outside number 7 the car arrives, and Siôn has been waiting anxiously;  

. . . and is confronted by an angry father

he launches into a tirade, “We agreed to babysit Greta for a couple of hours this afternoon – we enjoy spending time with her, but I've got work to do!   I expect a bit more consideration from you, Iolo!’

"I've got cancer!"

Tyler urges him to calm down, and Iolo explains, “We haven’t been on a jolly – we went to the hospital – I’ve got cancer!”   

Siôn is horrified

Siôn is horrified;  “Please tell me it isn’t true,” he gasps, and is informed that it is cancer of the breast.

"I have the same list of questions as you"

“I have the same list of questions as you,” Iolo says, 

"We're still trying to get our heads round it"

and Tyler adds that they are still trying to get their heads round it.   Siôn is incensed that he told Tyler before telling his father.   

"He is still my husband, Dad"

“He is still my husband,” Iolo replies.

"Yes, when it suits him!"

“Yes, when it suits him!” Siôn snarls, and would like a word in private with his son.   Iolo makes it quite clear that Tyler is staying, and has been supporting him over the last few weeks.   

"Well, now that I'm aware, you can leave!"

“You’ve known for weeks?” his father rages, and he replies that it is complicated.

“Well, now that I’m aware of the situation, you can leave!” Siôn instructs Tyler,  “I’m not letting you abandon my son again!”

"Fortunately, Dad, it's not up to you"

“Fortunately, Dad, it’s not up to you,” Iolo stresses, “Tyler is staying, so please don’t make me choose between you.”   Disgusted, Siôn turns on his heel and walks away.

"I can't believe you didn't tell me the truth"

Eifion cannot believe that he has not been told the truth, but Ray maintains, 

"I was trying to protect you"

“I was trying to protect you from getting hurt.”   

"You should have told me when I was grown up"

Eifion  appreciates that while he was a child, but should have been told later.   

"I was ashamed I couldn't do more"

“The situation felt so complicated – and it still does,” Ray goes on, “I was ashamed I couldn’t do more to help him.   I knew he was under pressure, but the life of a farmer is a challenging one.   The truth is, we had no idea that things were so bad.   Your father was a very private person, as you know.”

"There must have been signs"

Eifion insist that there must have been signs – something to suggest what he might have done, but Ray recalls, “He would have dark moments from time to time, but he usually got through them – recovered.   

"We were taught to be strong"

“People like us were taught to be strong – not to ask for help – to be men.”

Eifion is shocked by the news

Eifion is visibly shaken by this, and realises that things have not changed enough these days;  Ray is truly sorry that he did not tell the truth.

Siôn returns to Y Felin . . .

Siôn arrives back at Y Felin terribly upset;  

. . . looks at the photo of his late wife . . .

he looks across at the photo of himself and his former wife, Gwen, 

. . . and is very distressed

and is in a state of shock.

Gerwyn puts out the rubbish

As Gerwyn is putting out the rubbish in the green bin, he happens to glance up 

"I'll probably be back in a couple of days"

and notice Guto coming out of the door of Cysgod y Glyn;  “I’ll probably be back in a couple of days – I’ve got a test coming up,” says Guto.

"We know you like them young!"

Gerwyn marches across in that direction, shouting, “Oi!   What do you think you’re doing?   I know your game – we know you like them young!   He’s only a boy!”   

"I offered him a quiet place to work"

Ffion tries to explain that all she has done is to offer Guto a quiet place to work.   “Work, is it?   If you say so!” Gerwyn rants. 

"You can apologise to me some other time"

Ffion goes back inside, leaving Guto to explain to his father, adding, “You can apologise to me some other time, yeah?”

“What was she on about?   You go over there to work?” Gerwyn continues, 

"I don't get any peace in our house!"

and is told that his son does not get any peace in their house, especially with Aled there.   

"Why all the lies about Alesha?"

“So why all the lies about Alesha?” is the next question.

It is Guto’s turn to be angry;  “If you knew I was here, you would hassle me all the time – 

"I have to find somewhere else to work, because of you!"

“and now I have to find somewhere else to work because of you!”

"No, I'm not working tonight"

In the Deri flat, Aled informs his father that he is not working tonight, then it will be the salon and Tapas tomorrow.   Dani reports, “The lasagne is in the oven, and it will be about 45 minutes – 

"Jamie Oliver would be impressed!"

“Jamie Oliver would be impressed!”

"We were discussing work"

They tell her they have been discussing work at Tapas, 

"That's not very interesting"

which she does not regard as a very interesting subject.

Reminiscing over old photos

In the shop flat, Ray and Eifion are looking through the old photographs

"Look – the old 4x4!"

“Look – the old 4x4 – he always insisted on parking it in same place – in the shed,” remarks Eifion, “If Mam parked it somewhere else, he’d be straight out to move it.   

"He preferred to listen to the radio"

“He’d sit there, out in the yard, for hours – he preferred to listen to the radio than his own family.   Mind you, I don’t remember complaining.”

"Was it partly my fault?"

He puts down the album, and wonders if it was partly his fault for not asking, but it is pointed out that he was only young and it was not his place.   

"Have you sorted out things with Mathew?"

“Perhaps we should all check, especially with family.   Have you sorted out things with Mathew?   He needs your support – he hasn’t been right since the attack – he has spells of feeling very low.   

Ray is exhorted to tell him the truth

“You could discuss the family history with him to start with – the truth.   Remind him that he’s not alone – that you’re there for him – you have to do more this time.”

"I know where to come if I'm stuck for a chef"

In the Deri flat, they have enjoyed the meal, and Dylan knows where to come if he is stuck for a chef.   Dani says that she has enough on her plate at the moment, and Aled will do the washing-up, since she did the cooking.   

"I have plenty of experience at washing-up"

He has had plenty of experience at washing-up at Tapas, alleging that his father has never done it.

Dylan remembers old jobs

Dylan points out, “That’s where you’re wrong – my first job, while I was at school, was doing the washing up at the local café.   I started when I was 15 – I worked in the bakery, the barber’s, and I was a gardener for a week – until I made a mess of Mrs Phillips next door’s hyacinths!”

Dylan is invited to share the washing-up

Aled suggests he can share the washing-up and Dani smiles.

"Why didn't he tell me before now?"

At Y Felin, Siôn demands, “Why didn’t he tell me before now?”   

"I expect he didn't want to worry you"

Anita imagines that he did not want worry his father until he knew what was happening.   

"But I'm his father, Anita"

“But I’m his father, Anita – why include Tyler before me?”

She suggests that sometimes it is easier to share things with your partner, before anyone else.   

"I don't want to lose Iolo as well!"

“What’s wrong with me?   I’ve already lost two sons – I don’t want to lose Iolo as well!” he groans.

"You're talking as if you've already lost him!"

“Siôn – you’re talking as if you’ve already lost him!” Anita reprimands him, 

Anita tells him some home truths

“He’s only just had the results – it’s time to fight this illness, not each other!   You’ll get through it, Siôn, and Iolo will get through this – 

Siôn has to be strong for Iolo

“but you have to be strong – do you hear me?”

Aled has put everything away

Aled has put everything away, claiming that, “If a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing properly.”   He has to go now, as he must not be late to work in the morning;  “The boss is a nightmare!” he says.   

"We shall have to do this again"

He thanks his father for tonight, and would like to do it again.   When he has gone Dylan says that he knows what Dani is trying to do, but she denies trying to do anything;  

"He's developing well at work"

“It would just be nice if you realised he’s a fantastic boy – he’s developing well at work.”

Dylan has his own agenda . . .

Dylan seems more interested in how tonight is going to develop;  

. . . but Dani is having none of that

“Well, to start with, you’re going to walk downstairs and go home,” she informs him, “And I’m going to put my feet up –nothing’s changed.”   

"Good night, Dani"

He bids her good night.

"No, certainly not tonight"

At number 7, Tyler asks if Iolo wants to go over to see his father, and the reply is in the negative, for tonight anyway.   

"He's just worried about you, Iol"

“He was just worried about you,” says Tyler, 

"He wants to control the situation"

but Iolo knows he wants to control the situation, like he always does.

“I don’t know why you’re defending him – especially after the way he spoke to you,” Iolo emphasises.   

"I don't want to cause any more trouble"

Tyler will understand if he wants help from his father and Anita, and does not want to cause any more trouble.

"You're the one I want in hospital with me"

“You’re the one I want in hospital with me,” Iolo explains, “Sofa, upstairs – I’m going to have an early night tonight – 

"I don't want you to stay on the sofa this time"

“and I don’t want you to stay on the sofa this time.”
