Iolo is dealing with a plumbing repair

Next morning, Iolo is effecting some plumbing repair under the sink in Penrhewl

"You don't charge enough, Iolo"

as Sioned tells him that he does not charge enough.   He replies that he does not like to take advantage;  “And in any case, you get family rates now, don’t you?”

"The perks having Siôn White as a stepfather"

She dubiously comments, “The perks of having Siôn White as a stepfather.”

"What perks do I get from Eileen?"

Iolo says that he does not know what perks he gets from Eileen, and Sioned informs him, “A generous tip from her daughter,” as she puts the money into an envelope, placing it on the worktop by the door.

She has not spoken to Mathew

He asks whether she has spoken to Mathew and she sadly shakes her head;  Iolo assures her that he is there if she wants a chat.

"I need to go and rescue Grandma"

She appreciates that, but as her phone rings, she thinks that she needs to go and rescue Grandma.

“Hi, Mam – there was an emergency with the water – Iolo’s sorting it out now.   Yes, I know that – I’ll be there now.”

"Off you go, Sioned"

As she leaves the house,

"The envelope falls to the floor

the envelope with Iolo’s money falls to the floor.

She is at the shop flat in no time

She soon arrives at the shop flat, where baby clothes are hanging on the dryer and her mother complains, “I had to put them down for a nap – yes, I know what the time is – I’ve been watching the clock since 5:30am.”

"I'll put it in the tumble dryer"

Sioned will put the washing in the tumble dryer when she gets home,

"As long as you stick to the arrangements"

but Eileen goes on, “Look, Sioned, I’m happy to look after the little ones for you as long as you stick to the arrangements – that’s all I ask.”

Sioned answers that she would love to stick to the arrangements,

"It's difficult when I'm on my own"

but it is difficult when she is on her own.

"You're not doing yourself any favours"

“You’re not doing yourself any favours chasing after Mathew,” she is told,

"That's not what I was doing"

but protests that is not what she was doing.

"Hello, Iolo"

Sioned’s phone sounds and she finds that it is Iolo,

"Run the tap for a while before using it"

advising that he has finished the job and recommending that she runs the tap for a while before she uses it again.   She tells him that she has left the money in an envelope;  predictably enough, he cannot see the correct envelope,

Of course, he picks up the wrong envelope

so picks up the one intended for Mathew in error and leaves the house.

"Haven't you got the little ones with you?"

Eileen has found Anita in the street, who is surprised that she does not have the little ones with her;

"Little people, little problems"

“Little people, little problems – that’s what my Mam used to say.   I remember those days so clearly – but that’s what keeps them with us, isn’t it?   The memories.”

"Time goes so quickly"

By this time, Anita has walked past her house, number 7, as she continues, “Just treasure the time you have with them, because time goes so quickly.”

Jinx is not looking where he is going

Jinx comes out of number 9 and almost bumps into them;

"Are you out on your own, Anita?"

he is concerned that Anita is on her own and wonders where Kelly is.

"Kelly's in the house"

“In the house – why?”

"Why don't you come in for a cup of tea?"

He thinks the best thing to do is to invite her into his house for a cup of tea.

Mark marches along the High Street

Mark has walked angrily along to the Quantum Hydro Works office, where he confronts Brynmor;  brandishing the letter he has received,

"Six months to find somewhere else to live?"

he demands, “Six months?   Six months to find somewhere else to live?”

"The CPO's have arrived, then?"

Brynmor gathers from this that the CPOs have arrived in Maes-y-Deri.

“And when will the new houses be up?   I heard that newts have stopped the work!”

"They'll be up in plenty of time"

Brynmor reassures him that they will be up in plenty of time, although he knows this is not the case, handing Mark a glossy leaflet.

"I need at least three bedrooms:

“Two bedrooms?” he exclaims, “I need at least three,” so he is informed that there are three- and four-bedroom houses there.

"What about this relocation money?""

“And what about this relocation money?   Will I be able to afford one of these?”

Brynmor laughs at him

Brynmor laughs, “Listen, you don’t expect a new three bedroom house with an en-suite to cost the same as Maes-y-Deri, do you?”

"Don't you have any shame, Brynmor?"

Mark accuses him of having no shame;  he has people who rely on him and children to keep safe.   Brynmor cannot understand why he is worried;

"They're not your children"

“They’re not your children.”

"I take responsibility"

Mark points out that he takes responsibility and that Brynmor should try it.

"Stuff you and your bloomin' reservoir!"

“Stuff you and your bloomin’ reservoir!” is Mark’s final word as he stalks out.

"Will I get to see it?"

Jinx continues working on his portrait, Anita wonders if she will get to see it.   “I want to, or I wouldn’t have asked.   What’s going on with you, Jinx?”

"Mark's court case is next month . . ."

He replies that he had a phone call this morning;  Mark’s court case is next month

". . . and I have to give evidence"

and I have to give evidence against him.”

"It's only right that he pays the price"

Anita regards it as only right that Mark pays the price for attacking Jinx, but it is pointed out that it is still awkward, as they both live in the same village.

"You must concentrate on your portrait"

“That’s not your problem,” she insists, “Look, you need to put whatever is worrying you to the back of your mind, so you can concentrate on your portrait.”

"It's coming on well"

She gets up to take a look at it and is most impressed, telling him that it is coming on well.

"I might scrap it and start again"

He is of the opinion that he might scrap it and start again,

"It has the same affection in it"

but she maintains, “It has the same affection in it as mine – if you keep conveying that warm feeling, you’ll have a very special portrait.

Mark loses his temper with the solicitor

Up in the Deri flat, Mark is on the phone to his solicitor;  “If you won’t fight harder, I’ll find someone else, so sort it out!”   He tells his mother that they are useless and still have not found a way to lower the charge to ABH, but she points out that he cannot speak to solicitors like that.

"I'll get a much longer sentence for GBH"

“But I’ll get a much longer sentence for GBH, Mam – and I found out this morning that the court case is next month – I’ll have to find a better lawyer.”,

"Is that wise?"

She is doubtful that it is wise to do that,

"I want to be out of prison by next century!"

but he is adamant, “If I want any chance of being out of prison by the next century!”

He takes the leaflet from his pocket

He takes out the leaflet from his pocket to show his mother;

"They're going to cost a lot more"

“These new Quantum Hydro Works houses – they’re going to cost a lot more than what we’ll get for Maes-y-Deri.   Where am I, Dani and the kids supposed to go?”

"She owns number 7, doesn't she?"

“You don’t have to worry about Dani and the kids,” Kath tells him, “She owns number 7, doesn’t she?”

"They can't kick Anita out"

He insists that they cannot kick out Anita in her condition;  “She’s got dementia, for goodness’ sake!”

"Don't take it out on me!"

Kath tells him not to take it out on her,

"Sorry, Mam – I'm so stressed!"

so he apologises that he is stressed.

"Let's do something about the CPOs first"

She proposes that they should do something about the CPOs first, but he groans, “I can’t even afford a lawyer to keep me out of jail, let alone find one to fight Quantum Hydro Works.

"Is there any way you can help me?"

“I hate to do this, Mam, but is there any way you can help me find a better lawyer?”

She would love to do that, but all her money is tied up in the Deri and she imagines that her legal costs will go up with the divorce.

"Don't think everyone else is your responsibility"

She advises him not to think that everyone else is his responsibility,

"Who else is going to look after them?"

but he wonders who else is going to look after them.

Iolo has bought a couple of items

Iolo has bought a couple of items from the shop and is about to pay Llinos for them,

"Sorry, the machine's not working"

but the card machine is not working at the moment.   He takes the envelope from his pocket,

"Technology is great, when it works"

commenting that technology is great, when it works.

He finds not cash . . .

However, he finds that what he was expecting to be cash

. . . but a will

is actually a document headed ‘Final Will and Testament’, which makes him very concerned.

Mark tells his troubles to Rhys and Cassie

In the Deri, Mark is telling Cassie and Rhys,

"There should be a law against it"

“There should be a law against turfing people out.”

"But you're getting money"

Rhys comments that he is getting money to buy somewhere else;

"Not enough to buy something the same size"

“Not enough to buy something the same size round here.   Brynmor had a roof over his head at Maes-y-Deri and this is how he repays us.

"It's criminal!"

“It’s criminal that the residents of Maes-y-Deri are treated like this – families who have lived there all their lives are in tears because they have nowhere to go.   And Brynmor is getting away with it.”

"Unscrupulous swine!"

Cassie describes him as an unscrupulous swine;  “I can’t understand why Kelly can’t see that!”

"He's always been 'slimy'|

and Mark adds that he has always been ‘slimy’, just as Brynmor comes in.

“Speak of the devil!” says Cassie, “Are your ears burning, Brynmor?”

"It always happens when you're about"

He replies that it always happens when she is about, and asks whether Kath is upstairs.

"Kelly needs her head read"

Mark says that Kelly needs her head read, whether he is loaded or not.

"I need money"

Kath has summoned Brynmor;  “I need money to help Mark buy a tidy house,” she tells him.

"He's getting relocation money"

It is pointed out that he is getting relocation money like everyone else.

"Enough to buy a cupboard under the stairs"

“Yes, enough to buy a cupboard under the stairs, perhaps,” she continues.   He wonders how much room one man needs.

“Have you no shame, Brynmor?   You’re stealing our houses and offering shoe-boxes instead.”

"Mair says it's an upgrade

He maintains that Mair from number 10 says that the new houses are an upgrade from Maes-y-Deri.

"That hasn't seen a coat of paint since 1967"

“Well, she would say that, because her house hasn’t seen a coat of paint since 1967.”

"What do you expect me to do?"

He wonders what she expects him to do

"Stop this reservoir nonsense!"

and she immediately answers, “Stop this reservoir nonsense!”

"I thought you were happy here"

He points out that the Deri is her home now – and he thought she was happy here.   “I know that I’ve only asked for your share of the Deri, but Mark is struggling and wants to find money to get a better lawyer.”

Kath wants to reach an understanding

Brynmor laughs at this, but Kath is eager for them to reach an understanding.

"Why should I bail Mark out?"

“Why should I bail Mark out?” he demands.

She reminds him that she could have fleeced him for a lot more – but she has not.   He snarls that she got the Deri, which is what she wanted;

"You got you hands on Mam-Gu Mwmbwls' necklace

“And you got your hands on Mam-Gu Mwmbwls’ necklace, which is worth quite a lot.”

"You gave that to me!"

She stops him there;  “Whoa!   You gave that to me!   So, what do you say?”

"Mark's not getting a penny"

Brynmor is adamant that Mark is not getting a penny, turns and walks out of the flat, much to Kath’s disgust.

"I think I've made a mistake"

Sioned is working in the kitchen at Penrhewl when Iolo comes back, announcing, “I think I’ve made a mistake.   I thought this had the cash for the job in it.”

Sioned retrieves the correct envelope

She looks for the correct envelope and finds it on the floor, giving it to him.

He is very sorry about the mixup, and, as he is leaving the farmhouse,

"Did you see what was inside?"

she asks if he saw what was inside;

Iolo nods his head

he nods his head.

Jinx is now more optimistic

Jinx is now in a more upbeat mood;  “I think this is coming along, thanks to you,” he tells Anita, “Right, that’s enough for today.”

"How long have I been asleep

Then he finds that she is sleeping on the sofa.   She wonders how long she has been asleep.

He will take Anita to Tamed for a cake

“I’ll text Kelly to say that we’re going to Tamed for a cake to say thank you for inspiring me.”

"It's wonderful"

She looks at the portrait and describes it as wonderful, asking if he is happy with it and he thinks that he is;

"It's almost there"

it is almost there.   Now he will go and get changed;  “I won’t be long.”

Anita is delighted

Anita looks at the portrait with obvious delight;

"Oh, Darren!"

“Oh, Darren!” she says.

"You won't find the answer there"

At the bar in the Deri, Kath warns Mark that he is not going to find the answer at the bottom of his glass.

"Or anywhere else, Mam"

He is convinced that he will not find it anywhere else either and wonders what Brynmor wanted.   She lies that he was collecting a couple of magazines.

"I know of an empty house . . ."

Cassie interrupts to point out that she knows of an empty house in the middle of the village

". . . Rhys' number 10"

and points to Rhys.   She advises Mark to go and ask him, with his mother also encouraging him to do so.

"Have you ever thought of selling number 10?"

“Have you ever thought of selling number 10?” he asks Rhys and is told that it is already making good money for him.

"The money would be inn your pocket"

“But you’ll avoid all the faff, cut out the hassle – and the money would be in your pocket.”

“I haven’t said I’m selling yet,” Rhys protests, but, as Mark sadly walks back to the bar,

"I'll get back to you"

adds, “I’ll get back to you, so Mark thinks that there may still be some hope there.

Jinx finds Anita and the painting gone

When Jinx has changed and comes downstairs, he discovers that the portrait is no longer there

He goes in search

and neither is Anita.   He goes outside to try and find both of them.   She is outside number seven, just about to go in,

"I'm taking my portrait home"

and announces to him that she is taking her portrait home,

"It's not yours, Anita"

but he points out that it is not hers.

"Trying to trick me out of my own portrait, are you?"

“Trying to trick me out of my own portrait now, are you?” she demands, “Go away – get lost!   I know exactly where I’m going to put it,”

She finds the family portrait there

but then inside the house realises that the family portrait is already there

"It's not Darren"

and comes to the reluctant conclusion that it is not a portrait of Darren.

"It's not Darren"

She walks into the kitchen, muttering, “It’s not Darren.”

"He was related to Mathew?"

Iolo is surprised that the person whose will he opened was related to Mathew.   “His grandfather,” confirms Sioned.

"He must be minted"

“He must be minted to leave Mathew all that money!” Iolo exclaims,

"My grandfather left his money to some donkeys"

“And kind.   My grandfather left his money to some donkeys in Spain.”

Sioned asks whether she should tell Mathew about it, and he agrees that of course she should.   “But I wasn’t supposed to open the envelope,” Sioned frets.

"You didn't open it, Sioned"

She is reminded that she did not open it, so she picks up her phone and dials Mathew’s number,

An international dialling tone

only to be greeted by an international dialling tone.

"I didn't know he was abroad"

Iolo did not realise he was abroad

"Nor me"
and neither did Sioned.

Rhys is looking in Tomos ac Ellis's window

Mark comes across the road from the Deri, to find Rhys looking in the window of Tomos ac Ellis;  “Look at these prices!” gasps Rhys, but Mark points out that Rhys can sell to him without going through hoops.

"OK, then – for the same price as these"

“OK, then – but for the same price as these,” he says.   Mark protests at number 10 is not worth that much.

"It's worth what people are willing to pay"

“It’s worth what people are willing to pay to stay in the area,” Rhys reminds him.

Brynmor swaggers along

Then Brynmor comes swaggering along the road;  “Ah, here he is – the man who sent his mother to beg for money for him.   Your problem is that you always complain that life isn’t fair and then you expect everything on a plate.

"Isn't it time for you to grow up, boy?"

“Isn’t it time for you to grow up, boy?”

Mark goes straight back to his mother

Mark immediately returns to his mother in the Deri flat;  “How could you ask him?   He rubbed my nose in it.”

"It was worth a try"

Kath maintains that it was worth a try;  “But to beg from him or all people?

"We Joneses don't ask for handouts"

“We Joneses don’t ask for handouts – you taught us that.”

“That doesn’t matter – if we buy number 10 from Rhys, we’ll be fine,” Kath tells him,

"He wants at least £10,000 more!"

but he insists that Rhys wants more than they can afford – £10,000, at least.

"Cool head, Mark"

Kath tells him to keep a cool head and they will find a way to keep him out of prison and then they will find him somewhere to live.

"How about Dani and the kids?"

He raises the problem of Dani and the kids, but she insists, “One thing at a time – we need to find money to pay for a good lawyer for you,” she continues,

She goes to the sideboard

as she walks towards the sideboard, opens a drawer and takes out a padded envelope.

"Sell that"

“Sell that,” she instructs him, handing him Mam-Gu Mwmbwls’ necklace.   “Brynmor gave it to me when we got married –

"It's a start, isn't it?"

“it’s been in his family for years and is worth a fortune.   It’s a start, isn’t it?   Sell it.”

Something approaching a smile

Mark almost smiles for the first time in the episode.
