Britt sees Cai outside

Britt is sweeping out the MFC shop when she sees Cai passing and congratulates him, “The charity is £2,000 better off, thanks to you.”   

"It was teamwork, Britt"

He replies that it was a matter of teamwork.

Gwern rushes in and asks Britt if he can have the keys to the lock-up;  

"Dad's lock-up, in Cwrtmynach "

“Dad’s lock-up – the one in Cwrtmynach – I was just about to order an electric bike and I remembered that Dad sold them – don’t you remember?   

"We can save loads"

“We can save loads – I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before now.”

"I've sold the contents"

Britt is now in a rather a predicament;  “The thing is, I’ve sold the contents of the lock up – to Howard and Mark – to get money to contribute towards the bike.”

"Did you check what was in there?"

He enquires whether she checked to see what was in there before selling it;  “Auntie Britt!” he exclaims and walks away.

"I'm not interested in where Mathew is"

Eileen is in the shop flat, leaving a phone message for Sioned;  “Look, I just want to know about the chutneys.   I’m not interested in where Mathew is.   Phone me, please.”

"Wine auction tomorrow night"

Siôn comes in and finds an interesting looking card which Eileen explains is a wine auction tomorrow night;  “I think someone is trying to sell cheap wine.   

"Beaujolais day next month"

“I think they’re encouraging businesses to celebrate Beaujolais day next month.”

"That's quite a thing in Swansea"

He comments that it is quite a thing in Swansea and wonders if Tamed will be celebrating it.   

"No, I don't think so"

When Eileen does not think so, he suggests that they could go to the auction, as a chance to celebrate together.   

She wants to know what they are celebrating, 

"Iolo is going to adopt a baby"

so he replies, “I’m not supposed to tell anyone, but I can tell you – Iolo is going to adopt a baby, a brother or sister to Greta – Liv’s other child.”

"You're not serious?"

Eileen cannot believe that he is serious.   

"We might be too busy to go out"

He predicts that they might be too busy to go out before long, with grandma and grandad having another baby to look after.   

"I've got enough on my plate already"

She is not keen, arguing that she has enough on her plate already.

"Sorry to bother you, Howard"

Britt has hurried to APD, where she is sorry to bother Howard;  

"I've made a big mistake with that lock-up"

“I’ve made a big mistake with that lock-up,” she says, “Garry’s found out that I’ve sold it.”   

"You said it was yours"

Howard reminds her that she said that she owned the lock-up.

She admits that she lied and that now Garry is furious, “He’s after yours and Mark’s blood – 

"If you give me the keys back now . . ."

“but if you give me the keys back now, I’ll transfer the money back and sort everything out with Garry.”

"Do we have any choice?"

Howard asks if they have a choice and is told that they do not, so Britt wants the keys.   

"Mark has them"

Unfortunately, Mark has them, so Howard will try to contact him now 

"The clock's ticking!"

and is reminded that the clock is ticking.

Gaynor has a 'far away' look

Gaynor is sorting washing at Llwyncelyn when there is a knock at the door and she discovers that it is Cai.   She asks him, “How are things?” 

"I'm not going back to school"

and he explains that he has just told the school that he is not coming back;  he would like her opinion on what to do next.

"A large pot of coffee, then?"

In that case, she thinks that she had better make a large pot of coffee;  she remembers that he takes milk and two sugars.

"No, but we don't know where he is"

“Mathew didn’t disappear with that girl?” asks Cassie, in the deli.   Eileen confirms that he did not, but they do not know where he is.

"Now Sioned won't talk to me"

“I’ve told Sioned to move on and forget about him – and now she won’t talk to me.”   

"You're in the firing line, then?"

Cassie realises that Eileen is in the firing line.   

"Siôn wants me to go to some auction"

“And now Siôn wants to go to some auction,” she continues, as he walks in through the door.   Cassie has also had an invitation to the auction, as has half the village, apparently, but she does not have the patience.

"We could start a new tradition"

Siôn proposes that they could start a new tradition in the valley;  “I remember Gwen and I having some wonderful nights on Beaujolais Day,” he enthuses, “I remember Bois y Castell doing a fantastic performance of ‘Gwin Beaujolais’.”

"Stop going on about this blinkin' Beaujolais!"

Eileen irritably tells him that she is tired of listening to him going on about this blinkin’ Beaujolais.   He comments that everything seems to get on her nerves these days, 

"I'm trying to juggle everything, Siôn"

but she points out that she is trying to juggle everything;  “Putting in orders, tracking the accounts, sorting Sioned out.   I forgot to read a book with Huwi-John last week, so I have to read two books with him this week!”

"Greta can help Huwi with his reading"

“You’re in luck,” Siôn responds, “Greta can help Huwi with his reading tonight.   

"I told Iolo we'd babysit"

“I told Iolo that we’d babysit, so he can catch up on some work – so we’ll have fish and chips, the Rhys and Meinir legend  [famous Welsh folklore legend] and a film.   You’ll have a great night – you’ll see.”

Eileen is less than confident

Eileen appears to be less than confident about that.

Mark has some good news

Mark is at APD, speaking on the phone;  “This afternoon?   Yes, I’ll come over later – thank you.”   He tells Howard that a lawyer has agreed to take the case 

"This lawyer will fight for me"

and things are looking up.   “At least, she’ll fight for me!”

"It won't be cheap, Mark"

Howard does not want to burst the bubble, but points out that the lawyer will not be cheap;  

"Thank goodness for Britt Monk!"

“Well, thank goodness for Britt Monk – we’ll go to the lock-up later,” says Mark.

“Have you been listening to a word I’ve said?” demands Howard, “Britt said Garry . . .” 

"There must be treasure in there"

but Mark stops him there, realising that what Britt means is that there is treasure in that blinkin’ lock-up.

“If Britt wants it, there must be something valuable in there,” he explains, 

"Ah, right – I see!"

and Howard finally gets the message.

"I need a clear head"

Gaynor and Cai are enjoying some salad for lunch, but he refuses any wine.   He argues that he needs a clear head if he is going to start this business 

Gaynor gets stuck into the wine

and Gaynor agrees that it is a very exciting time and a new start.

"We got a takeaway"

He says that it was Dani’s idea;  “We got a takeaway after the ‘danceathon’.”   

"What – you and Dani?"

Gaynor is surprised at the thought of him and Dani sharing a takeaway after what happened.

"Good things happen when you talk"

“What they said in the hospital was true,” replies Cai, “Good things happen when you talk.   Seren’s death hit both of us hard, but gardening helps me to process things, like cleaning does for Dani.”

Gaynor's mind is elsewhere 

Gaynor appears to be in another world as she stares straight ahead 

"Are you all right?"

and he is concerned that she is all right;  

"You have the weight of the world on your shoulders"

she appears to have the weight of the world upon her shoulders.   

"Come on – you can talk to me"

“Come on, you can talk to me,” he encourages her.

"Cheryl – it's eating me alive!"

“Cheryl,” she says, “The whole thing is eating me alive and I don’t know what to do.

"Has Huwi-John watched the Harry Potter films?"

In the deli, Siôn asks Eileen, “Has Huwi-John watched the Harry Potter films?   Perhaps we can watch them with Huwi-John and Greta tonight.”

"I shall be busy"

Eileen replies that she will be busy, but he continues that there are eight or nine films 

"We need something to keep Greta busy"

and they need something to keep Greta busy now that everything is going to change for her.”

"This might not be a good idea"

“Has anyone considered that this might not be a good idea?” asks Eileen, “Iolo will need a lot of help – you and I will have to pick up the pieces and I don’t think it’s fair.”

"We're not getting any younger"

Siôn argues that it is part of being a family;  “It might be a lot of hard work – and we’re not getting any younger.   It’s true, isn’t it?   

"We have to accept that we're getting older"

“We have to accept that we’re getting older.”

"How have we got here?"

She sits down, as usual wearing her sour face, demanding, “How have we got here?”   He can understand that she is worried about getting older, 

"Together we can mature"

but insists that together they can mature – like two bottles of wine.

Britt is trying to get in . . .

Britt is trying the key in the padlock of the lock-up, when Howard and Mark approach;  

. . . when Howard and Mark approach

“What if we’re wrong about Britt?” says Howard, but when they see her there, 

"The first thing we did was change the locks"

Mark advises that the first thing they did was to change the locks.   This maintains that proves that he is right – that she is trying to trick them.

"No, I'm saving you, boys"

Britt, on the other contrary, claims that she is saving them.   

"You might as well tell us what you're looking for"

“Britt, you might as well tell us what you’re looking for,” says Mark and she realises that she has no choice but to tell them.

"Gwern thinks there's an electric bike in there"

“Gwern think there’s an electric bike in there and we need it back,” she admits.

"You're welcome to it – for £800"

Mark tells her, “All right, then, if you want to buy the bike, you’re welcome to it – for £800.”

"The lock-up was only £300

She protests that the entire lock up was only £300, 

"That was not my fault"

but he points out that it was not his fault that she made a mistake, reminding her that a new bike is worth more than £1,000.

“Please, Mark, I’m desperate,” she begs, but is told that she is not the only one who is;  he points out that a lawyer costs more than electricity and gas.

"If you hadn't hit Jinx . . ."

“Yeah – well, if you hadn’t hit Jinx, you wouldn’t need one!” she tells him.

He counters with. “If I hadn’t given all that money to Seren’s foundation, I could offer you a better deal, but there we are.”

"Surely we can adjust the price"

Howard is sure that they can adjust the price of the bike, so now Mark proposes £799 as his final offer.

Another glass gone

As Gaynor downs another glass of red wine, Cai asks if she has been to the police.   “Yes, I told the police that she’d been using my card to withdraw money and I hadn’t realised it was missing.”   

"Was there any CCTV?"

He wonders whether there was any CCTV on the cash machine, 

"Those things never work"

but is told that these things never work.

"The deception is unbelievable"

He appreciates that things like this will make her feel low;  “The level of deception Cheryl has put you through is unbelievable.   What has Tom to say about all this?”

"Tom just tells me to forget it"

“He just tells me to forget about it and move on,” which Cai does not regard as much help, recommending that therapy helps – 

"You've started by talking to me"

and she has started that by talking to him.

“This isn’t your fault – you haven’t done anything wrong.”

"What about this business?"

Gaynor seems eager to change the subject, reminding him that he came to her for advice, so she wants to know about the business, but he says that the gardening is not much.   “Trimming, cutting grass – 

"I'm sure I can build a shed or two"

“I’m sure I can build a shed or two.”

"I've got an old water feature in the garage"

Gaynor has an old water feature in the garage which she bought in a sale at the end of the summer;  he can build that and he realises that she is offering him his first commission, which she says is the least she can do.

It is all rubbish, until . . .

As they bring out more items of rubbish from the lock up, 

. . . Howard finds something

Howard thinks that he has come across what they are looking for;  

"It needs to be cleaned"

“It needs to be cleaned,” so Mark says that Gwern can do that, stressing that he himself is the one who needs some goodwill as he is helping Gwern while his father is locked up.

"This is a chance to make some profit"

“This is a chance to make some profit – right, I’ve got a meeting with this lawyer in a minute.   

'"You phone Britt and tell her we've found it"

“You phone Britt and tell her we’ve found the bike.”

They have had look at the garden

After they have had a look in the garden, Cai considers that it should be a simple enough job and asks when she would like him to start.   She says that there is no hurry, so he wonders if she has to get it passed by the boss.  

"It's my house and I make the decisions"

“No, it’s my house and I make the decisions,” she tells him.

"Tom makes you happy, does he?"

“Tom makes you happy, does he?” Cai asks, and she answers that she would not marry him otherwise.   He knows that people get married for many reasons, 

"Love is not pink and fluffy"

but she argues that she is mature enough to know that love is not pink and fluffy.

“No, it’s more like a rainbow, pink, yellow, grey.”   

"Grey a colour of the rainbow?"

He did not realise that grey was one of the colours of the rainbow.   “I’m looking forward to getting married, to be honest.   

"We'll move closer to the reservoir"

“We’ll move closer to the reservoir, a new start.”

"Won't you be lonely there?"

Cai is surprised to hear that that she will be moving and imagines that she may be lonely so far from the village.   She sighs that she is often lonely at Llwyncelyn, so it will not make much difference.

"What's Tom's big secret?"

“Come on, then – what’s Tom’s big secret?” Cai wants to know.   

This catches her by surprise

“The silence speaks volumes – he must have a weakness – something only you know.   

"He's not perfect, Gaynor"

“He’s not perfect, Gaynor.”

Tom has crept in . . .

What neither of them know is that at that moment Tom has come in silently through the front door.   

"He likes to talk to the plants in the garden"

Gaynor replies, “Between you and me and these four walls, he likes to talk to the plants in the garden.   He doesn’t know that I know, but I’ve seen him out there on his knees – it’s quite sweet to be honest.`’

. . . and is listening to their conversation

The look on Tom’s face at the moment is far from sweet and he thinks that now is his moment to enter.

"Ah, what's going on here?"

“Ah, what’s going on here?” he demands and Gaynor explains that Cai wanted some professional advice.  Cai comments that Gaynor has been very generous, 

"You got what you wanted, then?"

so Tom goes on, “You got what you wanted, then?”

“We had a lot of fun reminiscing – but don’t worry, she spoke about you a lot as well.”   

Gaynor is keen for Cai to leave

Gaynor seems keen for Cai to leave now, as she is sure that Tom has had a long day.   

"We can have a pint together some time"

Cai suggests that they could have a pint together some time.

"Yeah, good idea"

“Yeah, good idea.”

"What happened to the cleaning?

Gaynor is very well aware of what is coming next from Tom;  “What happened to the cleaning?   

"This place is a pigsty!"

“This place is a pigsty!”

Gwern is pleased to have the bike

Howard has delivered the bike to Gwern, emphasising that it will need a good wash and Gwern regards it as pretty cool.   

Howard has the money

“Britt hands over the money as Mark is approaching and she very pointedly tells Howard that it is a pleasure doing business with him.

"There you are – £400"

“There you go – £400,” says Howard, but Mark wants to know where Howard’s share is.   “It wasn’t worth £800, Mark  I couldn’t buy another bag of chips from Britt if I’d taken advantage.”

"I need every penny"

“But I need every penny if I’m going to pay this new lawyer,” Mark protests, 

"You can keep all the money"

but he is enlightened that he has not lost a penny – he can keep all the money.

"How old would you say I am?"

As Eileen stands by the bar, she asks Cassie, “If you didn’t know me, how old would you say I am?”   Cassie is surprised to be asked such a question;  

"Siôn has a knack of saying the wrong thing"

“Siôn has a knack of saying the wrong thing.”   

"What you need is another gin"

Cassie considers that she needs another gin, 

"I don't know what I need!"

but she groans, “With Sioned and Siôn, I don’t know what I need.”

"Why don't we go to the auction?"

“Listen, why don’t you and I go to this auction in Swansea tomorrow?” proposes Cassie, but the last thing that Eileen wants is to organise a Beaujolais night.   “I know, but we could have a jolly at the auction – a long day out, a long way from Sioned and Siôn.   

"What do you say?"

“Good company, good drink – what do you say?”   

"Why not?"

She has quite easily changed Eileen’s mind.

"How much have you drunk?"

When Tom comes back into the room he asks Gaynor how much she has drunk, but she is not sure of the answer.   

"One bottle?   Two?"

“One bottle?   Two?”   

"I have the right to have a glass of wine"

She argues that she has the right to have a friends over and to have a glass of wine.

Tom turns vicious 

He roughly grabs her by the arm 

"Not when you can't hold your tongue!"

and tells her, in a threatening manner, “Not when you can’t hold your tongue!   

"What did you say to him?"

“What did you say to him?”   

"Are you sure?"

Gaynor replies that she said nothing, but he is not so sure about that.

"If you open your mouth about Cheryl . . ."

“Because you do understand, if you open your mouth about Cheryl, it would be over for both of us.”   

"I would never do anything like that"

She assures him that she would never do anything like that and that he can trust her.

"You're not going to spend any more time with Cai, are you?"

“So you’re not going to spend any more time with Cai, are you?”   She shakes her head.   “Good, all right.”   

Now she has seen what he is really like

Gaynor looks terrified.
