9 October 2024

Anita is home . . .

A taxi arrives outside the Pharmacy and Anita gets out;

. . .and Kelly is overjoyed

Kelly immediately notices her and runs across the road.   “Auntie Neet!” she shouts,

"What are you doing back?"

“What are you doing back?” and embraces her.

“I thought a surprise would do you good after everything,” says Anita

Anita is accompanied by her son, Darren

and then we see that she has been accompanied by Darren, who also gives Kelly a hug, then presents her with a bunch of flowers.

"I haven't even hoovered"

Kelly protests that she has not even hoovered,

Someone else is pleased to see Anita

then Ieuan comes out of the door of number 7

They greet each other . . .

and also rushes across the road, just as the taxi driver starts his engine.

. . . and embrace in the middle of the road

There is a loving embrace in the middle of the road right in front of the taxi.

"Disgustingly sweet, aren't they?"

“Disgustingly sweet, aren’t they?” comments Kelly, but Darren prefers to use the single word ‘disgusting’.

The taxi driver is displeased

By this time the taxi driver is becoming impatient and sounds his horn, so Anita and Ieuan retire to number 7.

"Welcome home, Anita!"

Britt has just come round the corner by MFC and shouts to welcome Anita back.

"I'm fine, Darren – stop fussing"

As they are about to go into number 7, Anita assures Darren that she is fine and tells him to stop fussing;  he does not look inclined to do that.

"I wasn't expecting you back until tomorrow"

Meanwhile Britt has gone into the deli where Colin and Kylie are having something to eat;  he was not expecting to see her back until tomorrow.

She hugs Kylie

“Do you fancy something to eat?   I was treating Kylie –

"She's had enough of my cooking"

“she’s had enough of my cooking, haven’t you?”

"Gloria's sister has flu"

Britt does not have time for that, explaining that Denise, Gloria’s sister, has flu;  “Well, she says it’s flu, but I don’t know if it’s that or a cold.   Anyway, I have to organise the rest of the funeral.”

"So you'll have to go back to Newcastle?"

Colin assumes that she will have to go back to Newcastle in that case,

"She wants to be buried in Cwmderi"

but she goes on, “No, it turns out that Gloria wants to be buried in Cwmderi – she wants to be near Brandon – isn’t that lovely?”

"What about Neil?"

“What about Neil?   He must want to play a part in the arrangements,” says Colin, but Britt point out that his health has not been right since the stroke.

"Now it's down to me"

“No, it’s down to me to make sure Gloria gets the send-off she deserves,” Britt insists and Colin gives her a hug.

"Maple syrup all down my blouse . . ."

Anita is relating an incident in Canada;  “Before I knew it, I had maple syrup right down my blouse!

". . . and a swarm of bees above me"

“There was a swarm of bees above me.    Katie and . . . er . . . Alys couldn’t help me because they were stuck in the car.”

"I've missed you terribly"

Kelly has missed her terribly and Darren mutters, “Well, you can have her back now!”   Kelly continues that Griffiths has been lost without her

"Where has he gone?"

and Anita wonders where he has gone, as she has hardly seen him since she came back.

“Griffiths, are you coming down or what?” Kelly shouts.   Anita cannot understand how the two of them have lived under the same roof without killing each other;  Kelly agrees that it has been a testing time.

"Hiding your mistress in the wardrobe?"

Ieuan comes down, apologising for his absence, which Anita suspects has involved him hiding his mistress in the wardrobe.

"I never thought I'd find happiness again . . ."

“I was looking for your gift – I wasn’t expecting you back until tonight.   Erm, after Hazel, I never thought I’d find happiness again – but the loss I’ve felt over these last few months has made me realise

". . . but you enrich my life"

“how much you enrich my life.”

Anita wonders what he is doing

Anita is surprised to see him get down on one knee

"Will you marry me?"

as he continues, “Anita, please make me the happiest man in the world and marry me,” presenting her with the ring;

"Of course I will!"

of course Anita immediately agrees.

Kelly is very pleased

Kelly looks very happy about this, but Darren not so much.

Britt has phoned Catrin, who was more interested in finding out how her mother is.

"Catrin, Chester and Aaron will be coming"

In answer to Kylie’s question, she confirms that Catrin, Chester and Aaron will be coming to the funeral.

"Aah, everyone together"

“Aah – everyone together,” says Colin;  the children will be such a comfort to Britt and it will give Kylie a chance to get to know them.

“Are you a bit nervous about meeting them?” Britt asks;

"I've been offered and audition"

Kylie announces her news that she has been offered an audition with a drama company in Swansea.

“It’s next week, but at the same time as the funeral – it’s OK, I’ll cancel it,”    she volunteers,

"No – no way!"

but Britt does not want her to do that – miss out on a drama company like that, if it is something she really wants.

"You're the best!"

Kylie describes Britt and Colin as, “The best!”

"I've told you – I need time to think"

It appears that Danny is being harangued by Eileen;  “I’ve told you, I need time to think – I don’t know – I have to go,” as she hears a knock at the door.

Seren is reading . . .

On her way to answer it, she asks Seren to clear up her stuff,

. . . but does not hesitate to follow mother's instructions

which she does straightaway, without question.

"Where are you at with finding somewhere to live?"

The visitor is Jinx, who enquires, “I was just wondering where you’re at with finding somewhere to live?”   She dismissively replies that it is at the bottom of her list and calls to Gwern that they are going.

"You need to be out by next week"

“You need to be out next week,” Jinx bluntly informs her,

"You'll have to come back, Jinx"

but she tells him he will have to come back as they are going shopping;  they have a funeral to prepare for.

"I don't need any clothes"

Gwern comes downstairs maintaining that he does not need any clothes as he still has his court suit.   Dani points out that he has grown since then, but he tells her to stop fussing.

'Is Jinx coming today?"

Is Jinx coming today?” asks Seren, but her mother very abruptly tells her that he is busy.

"I'm not going without him!"

“Please,” she whines, “I’m not going without him!” and Dani is forced to capitulate;

"All right, I'll come"

Jinx will go with them.

"Don't talk about throwing us out infant of them!"

Dani snaps at him, “Don’t talk about throwing us out in front of them, OK?”

Off they go

Off they go to the shops.

Ieuan is on the phone in the kitchen of number 7 as Kelly is making everyone tea;

"Phone me back when you get any sense"

“Phone me back when you get any sense,” he says.

"Do we have any Prosecco?"

Kelly enquires whether they have any Prosecco, but Ieuan replies that he hates the stuff.

“Come on, we have to celebrate – we’re going to the shop,” Kelly tells him,

"And you're paying!"

“And you’re paying!”

She asks if they need anything from the shop

"Maple syrup, perhaps?"

and Darren jokingly replies, “Maple Syrup, perhaps?”

Anita looks blankly at him

Anita has no idea why he should say that,

"For you – and the bees!"

so he goes on, “For you and the bees.”

"What are you talking about?"

Now Anita is even more perplexed and Darren even more concerned.

“I’m obviously happier than you,” she tells him,

"You know why I'm worried"

but he replies that she knows very well why he is worried.   She insists that there is no need;  she feels better.   Now that she is home with her family and is going to marry the sweetest man in the village,

"Can't you be happy for your mother?"

she urges him to be happy for his mother.

Mark meets Iolo

Mark is walking past the pharmacy when Iolo comes out;  “I’ve nearly finished the to-do list for the party.”

"I'm struggling to find a stripper"

Iolo jokingly says that he is struggling to find a stripper, but apart from that, everything is fine.   Mark thinks that Megan’s party is going to be bigger than those the Queen used to have.

"She's the Queen of Cwmderi"

Iolo describes her as, “The Queen of Cwmderi – she isn’t 80 every day.”

"I hope she won't want as much fuss when she's 90"

Mark hopes that she will not want as much fuss when she is 90.   He will send Iolo the bill for the decorations

"Did you get a good deal?"

and is asked whether he got a good deal.

"About £300"

“About £300,” Mark replies, which is a great deal more than Iolo was bargaining for.   “You’re the one who wanted a bespoke banner – and balloons cost more.”

Iolo wants to cancel the banner, but is told that it is too late now.   Mark wants to know who is paying for this party

"I didn't know it was going to be so expensive"

and Iolo replies that he did not know it was going to be so expensive;  he is paying for the food as well, but had hoped that Cassie would do it for free.

He is reminded that the Deri is not a charity;  Iolo groans that his pockets are not deep enough.

"I hope that rash clears up"

When Mark sees Megan approaching, he changes the subject;  “Anyway, Iols, I hope that rash clears up.”

"Are you free for a cup of tea later?"

Megan asks whether they are free for a cup of tea later,

"Sorry, Megan, I have to go"

but they both make excuses;  Iolo has some work to do.

Some of the shopping has been done

The three of them are at the shopping mall, they have already sorted Seren’s outfit and Dani suggests that they could look in the next shop.

"You didn't have to come"

Seren runs ahead and Jinx sighs at the thought of yet another shop;  “You didn’t have to come,” snarls Dani, but he maintains that he did not want to disappoint Seren.

He has had nearly enough of this

He is becoming increasingly fed up with Dani’s attitude.

"You can choose a toy, Seren"

Seren is told that she had been a good girl today and is invited to choose a toy.

She replies that she does not want a toy,

Seren wants a make-up set

but instead produces a make-up set which she has found.

"You're too young for make-up"

Dani decrees that she is too young for make-up and Jinx remarks, “She’s her mother’s daughter, isn’t she?” then,

Jinx tries to distract her

as Dani replaces the make-up, he tries on a sailor hat, which makes Seren laugh.

"Shall we go and look at the dolls?"

He suggests that they can look at the dolls, so her mother can look around on her own.

"Oh, finally!"

When Ieuan comes out of the shop, Kelly exclaims, “Oh, finally!”   He was intent on getting a bottle that Darren would like.

"You're trying to impress him"

“Ah – you’re trying to impress him,” laughs Kelly and he points out that Darren will be his stepson.

"So I'll be, like, your step-niece"

Kelly suddenly reaches the realisation, “So I’ll be, like, your step-niece.”   Ieuan wonders if he should have asked permission her first.   “As if!” she says, “You’re an amazing housemate and friend –

"Dodgy tie selection"

you’ve got a dodgy tie selection but I’m dead chuffed that the family’s growing.”

He remembers that he has news for her and urges her to follow him across the road.

"The people of Cwmderi will be demanding their pizzas"

Jinx is anxious to get home, “Or the people of Cwmderi will be demanding their pizzas,” but Seren wants to get a present for Gwern.

“Isn’t he lucky to have a sister like you?” says Dani.

"Would you have preferred the other one?"

Jinx tells her they will pick up something on the way.  Dani appears disappointed and Jinx imagines she would have preferred the other one that Seren tried on.   “No, it’s just that black doesn’t suit her,” is the reply,

"Funerals don't, either"

“Funerals don’t, either,” so Jinx recommends that Seren does not have to go;  she can stay with him instead.

"You know what the Monks are like"

“Britt is really keen for everyone to be there – and you know what the Monks are like,” says Dani.

He asks her which is more important – Britt’s feelings or Seren’s feelings;

"You're her mam – you know what's best"

“You’re her Mam – you know what’s best.”   She thanks him for what she says has been a lovely day – for Seren.

“Right, something for Gwern and then we’ll go,” she tells Jinx

"Hywel Llywelyn is your brother?"

Anita has just heard the news and cannot believe it;  “Hywel Llywelyn is your brother?”   It has come as a shock to Ieuan as well;  Darren comments that Cwmderi is as mad as ever.

"There is a resemblance, you know"

Kelly looks closely at Ieuan;  “Stay still for a second – there is a resemblance, you know – just that your eyes are totally different.”   he suggest that perhaps he has Mami’s eyes.

“Yes, Eirlys,” observes Anita

"No – Eunice"

and is corrected that her name was Eunice.

"Mami was not as perfect as you thought!"

“Well, Mami was not quite as perfect as you thought!”

He argues that it was a different time then and he is sure that his Mami had her reasons.

Ieuan's phone rings

Then his phone sounds;  he dashes into the kitchen to answer it.

They all take an interest

“Hi, Efan, please tell me it’s good news.”

"Seren is not going to the funeral"

Dani has arrived at the MFC flat and warns Seren not to make a mess in Kylie’s room;  then she announces to Britt, “I’ve decided that Seren is not going to the funeral.”

"Don't be soft – of course she is!"

“Don’t be soft – of course she is!” Britt responds.

"She's too young"

Dani points out that she is too young;  she does not want her daughter to see everyone being upset.

Britt adopts the controlling tactics that we have seen so many times before;

"Everyone is coming – end of!"

“No, sorry, Dani – everyone is coming, end of.”   Then Gwern declares that he is not going either, but is told that Gloria would want him there.

"Gloria won't know"

“Gloria won’t know,” he answers.

"Apart from Kylie, everyone will be going!"

Britt is still adamant that apart from Kylie everyone will be going, but he protests, “Not everybody has lost their mother!”   Dani insists that there is no pressure on him to go, but Britt of course disagrees with this.

"I want us all to be there!"

“I want us all there,” she says and then her temper explodes,

"I'll drag you there if `I have to!"

“The Monks have suffered a loss!   And we’re all going as a family!   I’ll drag you there myself if I have to!”

"Are we cancelling this party or what?"

In the Deri, Mark joins Iolo and asks, “Are we cancelling this party or what?”

Iolo has been ringing round . . .

Iolo has been on the phone all afternoon with Megan’s friends to see if anyone can contribute.

. . . and has gained some financial assistance

“Nerys Cadwaladr will pay for the buffet and someone else will pay for the banner,” he advises.

“Thank goodness for pensioners and their big pensions,” says Mark;

"Vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free"

he is told that the buffet will have vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free food.

"Will there be anything left for us?"

Mark wonders if there will be anything left for them.   Then they look round and see Megan coming to the bar.

"Coffee for one, please"

“Coffee for one, please,” she asks the barman.

"I feel bad for not saying anything"

Mark feels bad at not saying anything to her, and Iolo appreciates that it is hard, but he must not spoil the surprise – which will be worth it.

"I know you're disappointed, Britt"

Colin tries to mediate in the dispute;  “I know you’re disappointed,” he says, but Britt stresses that she is not disappointed – she is angry.

"They should be there to show their respect!"

“They should be there to show their respect!”

"You can't control everyone and everything"

Colin maintains that Gloria would not want her and Dani falling out like this;  she cannot control everyone and everything.

"Why don't we find her favourite music?"

She should just concentrate on what she can arrange;  “Why don’t we try to find some of Gloria’s favourite music to play when people arrive?”

"OI could do a playlist on my phone"

Kylie suggest that she can do a playlist on her phone, which is just what Colin was thinking of.   As he asks whether there is a category for country and western,

Britt storms off . . .

Britt storms off to her room

. . . and slams the door

and slams the door.

"Right, great – I'll let you know"

Ieuan is again speaking on the phone;  “Right, great – I’ll let you know,”

"That was Efan Daniel . . ."

then he explains to the others that it was Efan Daniel, a friend on the council.

". . . the son of the owner of the Glyndwr"

“The son of the owner of the Glyndwr.”

"You haven't booked it already?"

Anita is incredulous that he has booked it already and he replies, “Well, we’ve got two options – either February 2026 –

"Or . . ?"

“or next week.

"Are you ready to be Mrs Griffiths that quickly?"

“Now, be honest with me – are you ready to be Mrs Griffiths that quickly?”

"I can't wait, Ieuan!"

Anita says that she cannot wait, and they embrace.

Britt appears to have calmed down

In the MFC flat, Britt reappears from her bedroom as music is playing;

"Gloria used to belt this one out"

“Gloria used to belt this one out when she was cooking,” she tells them, “She had a voice like a crow, but that never stopped her.”

"We'll make sure that's on the list"

Colin will make sure that is on the list.

Britt's phone rings

Britt apologises for her behaviour earlier;  “I wouldn’t know where to start without you two.”   Then her phone sounds and she answers it;

"Can you come?"

“All right?   Can you come?   Yes, everything’s all right here.   Of course I haven’t told anyone –

"Gwern can come – and Seren"

“yes, Gwern can come – and Seren.   I told you that you can trust me.

"Garry, I love you"

“OK, I’ll see you in the church – and Garry, I love you.”

She is about to rejoin the others

Then she goes back to join the others.
