"I'm resigning!" |
Ieuan marches into APD and announces to Mathew, “I’m resigning!”
"You can't do that!" |
throwing his black fleece over Matthew’s head. He is told that he cannot do that,
"You don't need me any more, because . . ." |
so Ieuan explains, “You don’t need me any more because . . .”
In comes Anita |
Anita walks in with Kelly and Mathew is overjoyed to see her.
"Sorry I left at such short notice" |
She is sorry that she left at such short notice and he understands, asking how is everything with her now. Anita replies that she is feeling much better now
"They're getting married next week!" |
and Kelly interrupts to point out, “Especially as they’re getting married next week!” Anita proudly shows off her ring,
"Griffiths got down on one knee yesterday" |
as Kelly continues, “Griffiths got down on one knee yesterday.”
"I don't want to work this afternoon" |
Ieuan does not want to work this afternoon, as he has a couple of jobs to do before the big day; “The suit, the photographer . . .” Anita reminds him that they need flowers, but he points out they sorted the flowers out last night,
"Oh, did we?" |
something which she cannot remember, but she puts that down to too much wine.
Mathew assures her that there is no need to hurry back to work; “See how things are after the wedding.”
"You can't get married without a stag do" |
Then he points at Ieuan; “I want to see you in the Deri at 6 o’clock – you can’t get married without a stag do.”
"All right, Sioned, I'll be there!" |
DJ is being harassed by Sioned on the phone; “All right – I’ll be there – I’ll be even later if you keep hassling me! I don’t think the shop is going to run out of prams.”
He leaves his money on the table |
He puts down the bundle of money, which he has been carrying, in order to take the dishes for washing up, then shouts to Jason that he is going, unfortunately forgetting the banknotes.
Kath and Mark are producing letters of protest |
At Maes-y-Deri, Brynmor discovers Kath and Mark have been writing letters, so he picks up one of them and reads, “Opposition to the dam – losing homes – killing communities.
"I thought you'd seen your objections" |
“I thought you’d sent your objections to the council a while ago.”
Mark confirms that they have, but these are extra ones, something which Brynmor finds strange.
"You don't really think you can get away with this? |
“You don’t really think you can get away with this, do you?” Mark cannot see any reason why not, so Brynmor enlightens him that every letter is checked against the electoral list.
"Mr Ben D Gedig!" |
On looking at the signature on the bottom of the letter, he exclaims, “Oh, Mr Ben D Gedig!”
"Good, isn't it?" |
which Kath thinks is rather good, but he definitely does not. “You work for the post, Mark – you’ll get the sack for this!”
Mark is naïvely confident that they will not find out, but Brynmor finds that another one of the ‘signatories’ is Mrs Kim O’Val [apparently, a ‘famous’ Californian runner]
"No, that's too obvious" |
which Kath considers rather too obvious. Mark agrees that he will keep it simple from now on.
“Mind you, there are some spare names available,” Kath goes on, “If we need them – death notices.”
"You're not doing that, Kath!"| |
Brynmor is adamant that she is not going to do that, but she insists that they will still be on the register;
"I'm sure they'd be against it" |
“And I’m sure they would be against it – if they were still here.” Then she finds out that someone she knew has died.
"You should have asked me first" |
At Y Felin Cai is complaining, “You should have asked me before inviting him over.” Lleucu points out that he would have said no. Then there is a knock at the door
"Please don't embarrass me, Dad" |
and Lleucu pleads with her father not to embarrass her.
Siôn sympathises that it is not easy to see his daughter in a relationship,
"Who does she choose? Gwern Monk!" |
but Cai grumbles, “There are hundreds of boys in the school – and who does she choose? Gwern Monk!”
Dani is invited to join them for dinner |
Gwern comes in, accompanied by Dani; “I didn’t want to drop him off without saying hello,” she says and Siôn invites her to join them for dinner. She says that she has the children in the car, but Siôn suggest that they can play with Greta upstairs; he comments that they have some ‘fillets’ spare.
"He means 'steaks'" |
Lleucu informs Dani that Siôn means ‘steaks’ which Dani find very tempting;
"I haven't had a steak since . . ." |
“I haven’t had a steak since . . . we could afford it– yeah, great!”
Gwern feels rather awkward |
Gwern looks awkwardly at Lleucu and her father.
Jason is one the phone . . . |
Jason is just coming out of the shop and speaking on the phone; “Do you think you can give me a call when you get back from holiday?
. . . to Sara |
“Please, Sara.”
Across the road, Kelly is just emerging from number 7
"Are you all right?" |
and approaches him, asking if he is all all right. She advises that she is just getting nibbles for Auntie Anita’s hen party.
"Hen party?" |
Jason wonders whatever she is talking about; “Yes, she and Griffith are getting married,” Kelly tells him – next week!
"It's lovely for them" |
“I know it’s crazy – but it’s lovely for them, so . . .”
"Hope they have more luck than we did" |
Jason hopes that they have more luck than he and Kelly did. She asks again, “Are you seriously OK?” He tries unconvincingly to assure her that there is no need to worry about him as he is fine.
"Have you phoned the counsellor?" |
“Yeah, well, I do worry about you, so . . . have you phoned her – the counsellor?”
"Of course I have" |
He replies that he has – of course he has; Kelly appreciates, “I know things are pretty rubbish, but at least you’re on the right path.” He hopes that she enjoys the hen party and he is very pleased for Auntie Neet.
"I hope things don't get too wild" |
In the Deri, Ieuan is hoping that things do not get too wild, so Rhys demands what time the stripper is arriving. Ieuan asks if his father is coming, but is told he is not and Ieuan appreciates that he is busy.
"Do you think your father will come to the wedding?" |
“Do you think he’d come to the wedding?” is the next question
Rhys has his doubts |
and Rhys is not sure about that. He knows that they have got the same father but does not know if it means anything to him, which rather unsettles Ieuan.
Diane is doing some washing-up |
Diane is washing up at Bryntirion when Jason comes in; “I'm trying to clean!” she complains.
"We're old enough to look after ourselves" |
Jason points out that he and DJ are old enough to look after themselves, but she describes the place as filthy.
Jason picks up the money |
Then Jason notices what has been left on the table and stuffs it into his pocket.
"What's this, Jason?" |
His mother finds in the bin the card given to him by Kelly, so he pleads with her not to tell her.
"Do you want to get better?" |
“Do you want to get better?” Diane demands
"I'll phone her tomorrow morning" |
and he says that he promises to ring this woman tomorrow morning.
"Man insists on cleaning everything" |
DJ returns and is told that Jason’s mother insists on cleaning everything;
"I've told her there's no need" |
he has told her that there is no need,
"Perhaps you could do the bathroom" |
but DJ thinks differently, suggesting that perhaps she could do the upstairs bathroom as well, but only if she is willing.
"It's our job to make sure the place is clean" |
Then Diane's phone sounds as Jason is stressing, “It’s our job to make sure this place is clean, not Mam’s!”
"I have to go" |
Diane announces that she has to go because Kelly wants a word with her; she snarls at them to keep the place clean and leaves the house.
"What's wrong with you?" |
As soon as she has gone, Jason growls, “What’s wrong with you? Leaving money lying around the place?”
"Everything else is in the garage" |
DJ says that he was in a rush after Sioned had been on the phone and urges Jason not to get angry as everything else is safely hidden in the garage.
"We need to get rid of all the cash – now!" |
“We need to get rid of all the cash now, DJ!” Jason insists.
Kelly is preparing |
Anita comes downstairs after having a sleep and finds that the kitchen has been decorated; “It’s not fair that Griffiths is having a party and you’re not.”
"It's lovely!" |
Anita thinks that it is lovely, as they have not had any time together yet, just the two of them
"There's a lot to catch up on" |
and there is a lot to catch up on.
But then there is a knock at the door and a voice can be heard; “Where’s the blushing bride?”
"Oh, Amanda!" |
It is Anita’s sister, Amanda,
"Back from the Great White North!" |
who exclaims, “Ah, there she is – back from the Great White North!” and she hugs Anita.
Then Diane arrives |
The next one to come in through the door is Diane, who is greeted in a similar fashion. Kelly announces that they are having a hen party for Auntie Neet, which comes as a total surprise to Diane; “Who are you getting married to?”
"Come off it – who do you think?" |
“Come off it – who do you think?” Anita replies.
"Before Emilio, the stripper gets here" |
Amanda returns from the kitchen with a bottle and some glasses; “Something to warm us up before Emilio gets here – the stripper!” Kelly forbids this and all that Anita wants is a quiet night. “Do you have to be so boring?” asks Amanda.
Diane’s answer is, “Do you have to be so common?”
Kelly puts her foot down and declares that there is to be no stripper, but she has prepared a quiz for Auntie Neet, on her relationship with Griffiths,
"Is it saucy?" |
but only as saucy as Auntie Neet wants it to be. Anita is adamant that she has nothing to hide,
Anita is given a hat and boa |
then is equipped with a cowboy hat and a feather boa.
"What do you do in your spare time?" |
Siôn is subjecting Gwern to some interrogation, asking what he does in his spare time. “Football,” the boy replies and Cai is eager to convert him to rugby.
"Thanks, Mr Rossiter" |
“The steak was lovely – thanks Mr Rossiter,” say Gwern, but Lleucu instructs him to call her father Cai when they are at home; Cai does not approve of this.
When Gwern maintains that it is not in the same class as Dani’s food,
"Teenagers are so ungrateful!" |
she is offended; “Charming – teenagers are so ungrateful!” Cai can agree with that. Dani continues, “We can’t do anything right, so there’s no point trying.”
Lleucu and Gwern look at each other |
Lleucu and Gwern look at each other.
"What first attracted you to Griffiths?" |
At number 7, Kelly’s quiz begins, “What first attracted you to Griffiths?” Anita regards that as easy, replying that it was his legs, which makes her sister laugh
"Are we talking about the same Griffiths?" |
and she wonders if they are talking about the same Griffiths.
“Well, you haven’t seen him come out of the shower,” Anita points out
"A mental image no-one wants!" |
and Kelly describes that as a mental image that no-one wants.
"He has this little tiny towel" |
However, Anita goes on, “He has this little tiny towel that just . . .”
Kelly quickly moves on to question two; “What did you do on your first date?”
"I'm not going to answer that" |
Anita is reluctant to answer that one, but her sister would like to know at least where it was.
"It's no fun if you're not willing to answer" |
Diane insists that it is no fun if she is unwilling to answer and she is warned that if she does not answer, she has to drink. Then there is a knock at the door and Amanda realises that she has not had time to cancel the stripper and she cannot leave him out there.
However it is only Darren |
Anita staggers to her feet to open the door, but discovers that it is Darren,
She enlightens him that it is a hen party |
which Amanda is not very happy about.
"We don't want to push our luck, Mam" |
At Maes-y-Deri, Mark considers that they have done enough letters; “We don’t want to push our luck,” he tells his mother,
Brynmor just chuckles |
while Brynmor, on the sofa, simply chuckles.
“Thinking of this place being flooded . . .” Kath begins,
"Memories are inside your head" |
but Brynmor remind her that memories are in the head not in bricks and mortar.
"Have you seen that dent in the doorframe? |
“Have you seen that dent in the door frame, where I threw a frying pan at Dyff? And that’s where Stacey lost her tooth, after those two were wrestling – remember?”
"Are all your memories as violent as that?" |
Brynmor enquires whether all her memories are as violent as that;
"They're full of fun and love" |
she points out that they are full of fun and love. “No-one can steal that away from me. We are doing all of this for the greater good, aren’t we? I hope you’re against this dam.”
Is Brynmor hiding |
He agrees that he is, but not particularly convincingly; Kath simply tells him to shut up.
"Go and get some stamps for us" |
“Go and get some stamps for us.”
"I went to see Dewi Doughnut" |
Darren relates that he went to see Dewi Doughnut in Llanarthur, had a pint with Steve Eds in The Bull – and here he is; he is only here for a week.
"Why don't you go to the stag do? |
Amanda suggests that he goes to the stag do in the Deri as she wants to hear more juicy details about Griffiths.
"It started in the Glyndwr" |
Diane lets it slip that the relationship started in the Glyndwr; “Of course – that’s where it was – Christmas night!” exclaims Amanda. Anita replies that she just chose not to say, but Amanda wants to know exactly what happened.
"Right, it's time for me to go" |
Darren takes this as his cue to leave.
"Are you going to be OK, Mam?" |
As the other two go into the kitchen for a refill, Darren asks if his mother is going to be OK. “Yes, I’ll be fine, because I’m with family, aren’t I?” she assures him,
"Off you go to the Deri" |
“Off you go for a pint – go on!” He will catch up with her tomorrow morning, and as the sound of drunken carousing is coming from the kitchen, he adds that she will probably need a fry-up.
"Anita's been back there again – and again!" |
Then they resume where they left off; “Griffiths naked,” Amanda summarises. Kelly does not want to go there again, but Amanda continues, “Anita’s been back there again and again!”
Ieuan relates 'tales of a carpet-fitter' |
In the Deri, the stag night continues with Ieuan regaling the others with tales of his past;
"A man sees a lot when fitting a carpet" |
“A man sees a lot when fitting a carpet – that goes back a few years, though.”
"This bloke's hilarious!" |
Rhys is very surprised; “I never thought I’d say this – but this bloke’s hilarious! Why were you like this at Tomos ac Ellis?”
"But now you're family, aren't you?" |
Ieuan tells him that he was an employee then, but now he is family. Of course, Mathew knew nothing of this
and Ieuan tries to cover up by alleging that he meant his group and his inner circle.
"We're going to be the guest ale here" |
“I’ve got some news, too,” says Rhys, “We’re going to be a guest ale here next month.”
“So Ceffyl Du is neighing!” remarks Ieuan,
"It will be a success!" |
“You’ve got a nose for business – it will be a success.”
Darren appears . . . |
As they are drinking a toast to the groom, Darren appears
. . . and is welcomed by Rhys |
and is greeted by Rhys.
Mathew instructs Ieuan to buy their guest a pint, but he objects to paying at his own stag do.
"All my money is going on the honeymoon" |
“All my money is going on the honeymoon.” Rhys says that this Griffiths is the one he knows – stingy and selfish.
The dinner things are being removed . . . |
The table is being cleared at Y Felin and as the others go into the kitchen,
. . . leaving Lleucu and Gwern alone |
Lleucu and Gwern are left, sitting together on the sofa.
"That wasn't as bad as I thought it would be" |
“Actually, that wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be,” says Gwern. Lleucu comments that they seem to be mates – all weirdos.
Jason sits, thinking |
Jason is sitting at Bryntirion, thinking, when DJ announces that he has the answer;
"I've got a way to get rid of the money" |
“I’ve got a way to get rid of this money.” Jason turns off the television in order to listen to DJ’s plan.
"Shares in a racehorse" |
“Shares in a racehorse – I saw it on Facebook – it’s a perfect idea,” he maintains.
"Just what a gambling addict should do!" |
Jason does not agree; “Just what a gambling addict should do with his money – buy a racehorse.”
"We wouldn't be gambling" |
DJ explains that they would not be gambling but would be co-owners. Jason will not entertain the idea; Sorry, but you’ll have to think of something else, all right –
"Something sensible!" |
“something sensible!”
"About that racehorse . . ." |
DJ is not going to be put off so easily, so as soon as Jason is out of the way, gets out his phone and makes a call; “Hello, Brian? About that racehorse –
. . . do you have time to meet for a chat?" |
“do you have time to meet for a chat?”
A gamer of darts is in progress |
In the Deri, as they are having a game of darts,
"You could phone Mimi and arrange a private showing" |
Rhys winds up Ieuan by suggesting that he could phone Mimi and arrange a private showing,
"Quiet!" |
but he is told to be quiet,
"What's he on about?" |
although Darren’s interest is piqued.
"I'd better book a taxi to Mimi's – I mean Mama's!" |
“Right, I’d better book a taxi back to Mimi’s – I mean Mami’s!” says Ieuan, and Mathew imagines that Anita has kicked him out already. He explains that it is only while Darren is here.
"I'm going to look after her for the rest of her life" |
“Darren, you’re such a nice bloke and your mother is very proud of you – I’m going to look after her for the rest of her life!”
Darren seems to be withholding something |
Darren looks as if there is something he is not telling them.
Mathew wants to know where the honeymoon will be
"I've booked a couple of weeks in Scotland" |
and is told, “I’ve booked a couple of weeks away in Scotland, straight from the wedding, like a mini honeymoon – and then a few years after we retire, perhaps we will go further afield.”
"She won't want to go long haul" |
Darren says that he is not sure that Anita will want to go long haul, but it is pointed out that she has just been to Canada. Ieuan is pleased that he will be part of the family after next week.
"I'm sure she mentioned cherry blossom in Japan" |
Mathew is sure that Anita has mentioned cherry blossom in Japan. Ieuan also talks about Sydney Opera house.
"It's not a good idea – this wedding!" |
Darren is adamant that it is not a good idea; “Not the honeymoon – the wedding.”
"What?" |
Ieuan does not understand what he is saying,
"I'm not going to let this wedding happen!" |
so he adds, “I’m not going to let this wedding happen – it’s not right!”
Darren storms off |
before he walks out of the Deri.
