Jason comes into the blackened Deri . . .

Jason comes into the remains of the Deri, searching for the bag which was left behind;

. . . making his way to where the money was last seen . . .

he painstakingly picks his way towards its last position, removing various obstacles on the way, but finds it is no longer there.

. . . but there is no sign of it

He looks further afield, but there is now no sign of it

Mark is asleep on the sofa

What is left of the previous night’s food is still on the table at Maes-y-Deri;  Mark is asleep on the sofa when his father comes in through the back door.

"The early bird catches the worm"

“Hey, the early bird catches the worm,” he says ands wakes Mark.

"Have you been with Dan all night?"

“Have you been with Dan until now?” Mark asks him, and Dyff confirms that he has – and he has some good news.

“Yous ‘brother’ has opened his eyes – do you want to come over and see him later?”

"I have to go and see Dani"

Mark says that he is unable to as he needs to go and see Dani, Seren’s mother.   His father wonders whether he knows her well and insists, “But you don’t have to go now,” he argues.  Mark disagrees with this.

"Well, what about Dan?"

“Well, what about Dan?   He’s woken up!”

Mark does not regard him as a brother

Mark is pleased to hear it but points out that Daniel is no more a brother to him than he is a son to Dyff;  then he leaves the house.

Kath investigates the former pub

Now Kath is in the Deri, where the damage is obviously extensive;

"I can't believe what's happened!"

Cassie follows her and they cannot believe what their pub has become.

A scorched photo of Jean McGurk

Kath picks up a battered photo of Jean,

"What happened to Seren puts everything into perspective"

as Cassie says, “What happened to little Seren put everything into perspective, doesn’t it?”

"Doesn't it just?"

“Doesn’t it just?” Kath replies.   Cassie continues that life is short and she has been so worried –

"I don't want to lose my friend"

she does not want to lose her friend.

"You've deceived me for a quarter of a century"

However, Kath’s opinion is, “Life is too short to waste any time on someone who has deceived you for around a quarter of a century.

"I thought the world of you, Cassie!"

“I thought the world of you, Cassie.   I would do anything for you, really.”

"I was in the middle"

invites her, “Put yourself in my shoes for a minute – I was in the middle, between both of you.”

Kath notices that she keeps saying that,

"And you chose to keep his dirty little secret"

“But you weren’t in the middle, were you, Cassie?   You had a choice – and you chose to keep his dirty little secret, didn’t you?

Kath rants at Cassie

“You supported him and betrayed me, didn’t you?   And now, look at you, you’ve got the cheek to ask me to put myself in your shoes – to sympathise with you – because you feel so terrible.”

Kath looks down at the photo of Jean and goes on, “You know how hurt I was when Jean and Dyff went behind my back – but do you know what?   You’re worse than both of them combined!”

"This has been churning me up inside for years"

Cassie wants to say something;  “Just listen to me – this has been churning me up inside for years.”

Kath is unmoved;  “Here we go again – me, me, me!” she snarls, “Isn’t that right, Cassie?” and smashes the picture to the floor in a fit of rage,

The picture is flung to the floor

much to Cassie’s horror.

“Do you know what?   Do what you want with this place – because I don’t want anything to do with it any more – nothing!

"Don't you ever come near me again!"

“And don’t you come near me ever again, do you understand?   Or I won’t be responsible for my actions!   Is that clear, Cassie?”

Kath storms off

She marches out of the Deri.

DJ's breakfast time

At Bryntirion, DJ is playing with his breakfast cereal when Jason comes in, sadly shaking his head;

"No sign of it anywhere"

“No sign of it anywhere – somebody has taken it.”   DJ think that it may have been burned to ashes,

"There would be some trace of it"

but Jason maintains that there would be some trace of it somewhere in the ashes.

“Some swine has taken his opportunity – I don’t know who, do I?   “I need a coffee,” says Jason.

"The twins will be seven or eight"

DJ groans, “The twins will be seven or eight before I get out of jail –

"Mathew's bound to report us"

“Mathew’s bound to report us.”

"If you hadn't gone behind my back . . ."

He is told that if he had not gone behind Jason’s back with that race horse,

"There's no milk, DJ!"

then Jason discovers that there is no milk in the fridge, but the empty bottle has been put back.

"£20,000 – gone, just like that!"

“It’s like living in a zoo!” he rages.

“£20,000 – gone, just like that,” wails DJ, but is informed that some people have lost a lot more than that they have – like poor Dani.

"There was a whole loaf earlier!"

The last straw is when Jason finds that there is no bread either, although there was a whole loaf earlier.

"I eat a lot when I'm stressed"

DJ’s excuse is that he eats a lot when he is stressed,

"Go to the shopman get some more!"

so he is told to go to the shop and get some more.

“Oh, great idea – go to the shop when the pigs are prowling around – what are we going to do, Jase?” DJ exclaims.

“What are you going to do, you mean,” Jason reminds him, but he is told that he is in it as well.

"I didn't steal the money – or leave it behind"

“I didn’t steal the money – I didn’t leave it in the Deri!”

"If I go to jail, you''re coming with me!"

DJ snarls back at him, “You were happy to take half of it – if I go to jail, you’re coming with me!”

"The police have CCTV evidence"

Jason proudly points out that the police have evidence – CCTV of him in Newport when DJ was stealing the money.

"I'll say it was all your idea"

DJ is becoming desperate now;  “But I needed the code for the safe – I’ll tell them you gave it to me and it was all your idea.”   Jason growls that he would not dare;  “Just try me!” DJ tells him.

Dani is arranging flowers

Dani is putting flowers in numerous vases when Gwern brings her another bunch;

"Why did you answer the door?"

“No more flowers, I said,” she reprimands him, “Why did you answer the door?”

"John and Irene – who are they?"

She looks at the card which says that they were from John and Irene, but has no idea who they are.   She does not have a vase for them anyway.   Gwern remarks that Seren liked purple,

"Don't open it, Gwern"

just as there is another knock at the door and she warns him not to open it.

Mark peers through the letterbox

She hears Mark’s voice calling her name through the letterbox,

Gwern walks out . . .

so Gwern leaves the house, at the same time letting him in.

. . . andMark comes in

Mark looks at Dani

He gives Dani a hug

and then gives her a big hug.

The scaffolding is up already

Scaffolding has already been erected in front of the Deri, and Cassie looks up at it;

Rhys bring a bottle of Ceffyl Du

Rhys brings out a bottle of Ceffyl Du for her.

"You look as if you need it"

“You look as if you need it,” he says.   She asks if he has a cigarette, but he cannot oblige.

Cassie has to make do with the beer

“I haven’t smoked for years, but I’d give my right arm to have one now,” she groans.

"You'll get the insurance money"

Rhys is sure that she will get the insurance money,

"Money isn't everything, is it?"

but she goes on, “Money isn't everything, is it?”

“Look, there is never a good time to say something like this,

"I've got a licence to sell beer"

“but I’ve got a licence to still beer directly from the brewery.”   Cassie asks what happens when the Deri reopens,

"Fancy yourself as a bit of a Rupert Murdoch?"

imagining that he fancies himself as a bit of a Rupert Murdoch, who she describes as a ‘pig’.

“You’ll trample over anyone who’s in your way to get what you want.

"You've messed with the wrong woman, pal!"

“Listen, you’ve messed with the wrong woman, pal!

Rhsy has got himself an enemy here

I’m going to do everything I can to make sure that your business goes to the wall!”   She thrusts the bottle of the beer into his hand and walks away.

Jason and DJ come bearing gifts

Jason and DJ go into APD, bringing Mathew a cappuccino and a cinnamon swirl.

"I was wondering when you two would turn up"

“I was wondering when you two would show up,” says Mathew and DJ gives him a pain au chocolat as well.

He is not impressed

“Oh, perfect – enough pastries to build Mrs Hughes Fynnon Fach’s new extension, then?   Thanks, boys,” and he flings them straight to the floor.

"We're here to try and sort this mess out"

Jason begins, “Right, Mathew, we are here to try and sort this mess out,” with DJ adding that they also want to explain what has gone wrong.

"APD is £23,000 short!"

Matthew is in no mood to listen, but reminds them, “APD is £23,000 short and you two are responsible – that’s what’s gone wrong.   What came over you?”

DJ maintains that they have been through a tough time;  “And I haven’t?” Mathew shouts.

"Kelly wants the divorce money"

Jason says just to get things clear, that he agreed to take half the money because Kelly wants money from the divorce, but he stresses that he did not steal the money.

"And I've lost two jobs"

“And I’d lost my jobs at Tamed and Penrhewl,” DJ adds.

"So y0u helped yourself to my business!"

So Mathew  concludes that they decided to help themselves to his business.   The phone rings, as Jason is picking up the discarded food items, and DJ wants to know what Mathew intends to do.

"Answer the phone"

“Answer the phone,” is the reply.

They think it advisable to retreat

Jason and DJ think that it may be wise to leave at this point.

Cassie passes the shop . . .

Cassie is passing the shop,

. . . which has a new assistant

where there is a stranger behind the counter and Dyff is buying something;  she walks in through the door.

"So this is where you're hiding!"

“So this is where you’re hiding,” she growls and he says once again that he is sorry.

"What do you want – blood?"

“What else do you want from me – blood?”

"Did you expect everyone to accept you?"

She asked if he expected to come back and for everyone to accept him, after his new life.   She has kept his secret for years – but he had to come back and put his big foot in it, like he always does.

"I've lost everything!"

“And now I’ve lost my friend, my livelihood and my business – I’ve lost everything.”   Gwern has just walked in and is listening to this.

She gives Gwern a kiss

Cassie apologises to him and gives him a kiss.   He asks where he can buy vases to put flowers in.

Dani brings Mark some food

Dani brings Mark something to eat,

Gabriel is crying upstairs . . .

then Gabriel can be heard crying on the baby monitor,

. . . but Dani appears disinterested

but Dani sits down rather than going upstairs to him.

"Do you want me to go up?"

Mark volunteers to go up, but she simply says that she has heard about Dyff.

"Living a double life?"

Mark still cannot believe it and she is surprised that he was living a double life.

"More or less, with Jean McGurk"

“More or less, with Jean McGurk and her son out in Spain,” he says.   Dani is incredulous that he did that while having a family here.

Mark goes upstairs to Gabriel

Gabriel continues to cry, so Mark says that he will go up, just as Gwern comes back in with some vases,

Dani ignores Gwern

but Dani seems to totally ignore him.

"A few pastries to clear our debt?"

Back at Bryntirion, DJ demands, “How on earth did you expect a few pastries to clear our debt?”

"Your debt, DJ!"

Again Jason reminds him that it is his debt, but DJ does not want him to start that argument again.

“Mathew’s a reasonable guy – I’m sure he’ll appreciate . . .”

"What – the cinnamon swirls"

“What – the cinnamon swirls?” sneers DJ, but Jason would prefer to call it a gift from his friends.   Then there is a repeated knock at the door, which they find troubling.

"Just tell me you've got the money"

Jason discovers that it is Mathew, who tells them, “I’m not staying – I don’t want any more grovelling, either.   Just tell me you’ve got the money.”

DJ's expression dispels that hope

He can tell by looking at their faces that there is a major problem with that.

"He's asleep again . . ."

Mark has managed to get Gabriel back to sleep and thinks that he will leave now,

". . . he was asking for you, Dani"

but points out that the child was asking for Dani.   “Look, Dan, I know it’s easy for me to say,

"Try to be strong for their sake"

“but try to stay strong for their sake.   You know where I am.”

Dani is left sitting, initially staring into space, but then she goes into the kitchen,

"Purple – nice colour"

where Gwern is arranging flowers.   “Purple – nice colour,”

"We can't just throw them away"

and Gwern says that they cannot throw the flowers away;

"I feel like I'm doing everything wrong"

he is sorry and feels that he is doing everything wrong.

Mark is back home

When Mark gets back to Maes-y-Deri, his father turns off the television;  “Dani’s not special,” he says, “I’m worried she’s turning her back on the boys.   Did you go and see Dan?”

"I'm not handling this very well"

Dyff is very aware that he is not handling this very well;  “Look, I’ve known all along that I’m alive and that Dan is my son, but I had forgotten that all this is fresh to you.

"Dan is getting better slowly"

“Dan is getting better slowly – and I know it’s early days to call you brothers, but Dan is my son.   Do you know what?   There’s one thing that he doesn’t like – Die Hard!

"How can anyone not like Die Hard?"

“Imagine it – how can anyone not like Die Hard?”

They will be having a film evening

They settle down to watch that very film.

Hywel looks at his phone , , ,

In the deli, Hywel is looking at his phone,

. . . and the message from his 'brother'

particularly a message from Ieuan with a photo of him and Anita and the words, ‘Miss me, bro?’

"Do you want something stronger?"

Rhys comes in to ask his father whether he would like something stronger than that coffee.

“Haven’t you noticed?   The Deri has blown up,” is Hywel’s sarcastic reply, but is informed that Ceffyl Du is open.   “Don’t you need a licence?”

"That['s where Uncle Ieu was handy"

Rhys continues, “That’s where Uncle Ieu was handy – he fast-tracked the application – I can sell on site now.”

"The man himself!"

Cassie comes in, sneering, “The man himself!” and Rhys cannot believe that she is still angry.

She orders a coffee

“Yes, I am – you’ve taken advantage of my loss.”

"That's not exactly true"

Hywel intervenes to point out that is not exactly true.

"You're not the one who's lost everything!"

“You’re not the one who’s lost a business and a home overnight,” she stresses, “My heart bleeds for Dani and the family, but I’m staying in this horrendous B&B – I can't sleep, wondering how I’m going to move on.”

"You could move in with us, if you want"

Hywel makes the offer that she could move in with them if she wants, which does not exactly please Rhys.   “To ease your pain,” Hywel explains.

"And your conscience?"

“And your conscience?” she sneers, so Hywel replies that he has not done anything.

"Competition is healthy"

Rhys maintains that competition is healthy, but is warned by his father he should have taken the effect on the Deri into account.

"It's only small"

“It’s only a box room and its small,” he goes on, but she says that anything is better than that disgusting B&B.   She could also keep an eye on the builders when they start;

"When can I move in?"

she wants to know when she can move in.

"I want all that money back – all right?"

“What are you going to do?   Go to the pigs?” demands DJ.

Mathew makes it quite clear, “I want all that money back – all right?”

"We can pay it back every month"

DJ agrees, saying that they can work something out.   They could pay him once a month, or every couple of weeks, whatever suits.

"By Monday!

Mathew stipulates, “By Monday.”

"You're joking, right?"

Jason bursts out laughing, assuming that this is a joke.

"I've never been more serious"

“I’ve never been more serious about anything in my life, Jason,” is the chilling reply, “And if I don’t get it, in cash, by 9 o’clock Monday morning, I’ll have no choice but to report you.”

"That's not fair"

DJ protests that it is not fair,

"See you on Monday"

but Mathew confirms, “See you on Monday,” then leaves the house.

They are in more than . . .

DJ and

. . . a little trouble here

Jason find themselves in quite a predicament.
