15 October 2024

Anita is in her dressing gown . . .

On the morning of her wedding day, Anita comes downstairs in her dressing gown

. . . looking at photos of her wedding with Meic

and looks at a photograph album, particularly at photos of her wedding to Meic.   She seems to hear his voice in her head, “Good days, weren’t they?”

She nods her head

She nods her head in agreement, just as Kelly comes in, carrying Anita's wedding bouquet.

Kelly is back

“She’s done a beautiful job of the bouquet,” and Anita regards it as perfect;

"It will go lovely with my dress"

it will go lovely with her dress.

Kelly has planned her day

Kelly unloads several bottles from her bag as she tells Auntie Anita, “Itinerary for the day – Cheryl is arriving in an hour to do your hair and make-up, then Mam and Diane will arrive to get their hair done – you should see the Pinterest board!

"I don't have time to get my hair down"

“I don’t have time to get my hair done – have you had any breakfast?”

"Hello – yeah, you what?"

Kelly’s phone rings, “Hello – yeah, you what?

"Is this a joke?"

“Hang on – is this a joke?”

"I thought you had a wedding today"

Hywel is surprised to see Ieuan at number 21;  “I thought you had a wedding today – what are you doing here?   Has something happened?”

"Darren said I'm not allowed to marry Anita"

Ieuan explains, “Darren – I thought we were getting on well and the next minute, he said I’m not allowed to marry Anita.   Perhaps he thinks I’m not good enough for her.”

"It doesn't matter what Darren thinks"

Hywel maintains that it does not matter what Darren thinks; “You obviously love each other and, somehow, you suit each other, too!”

"Shame Darren doesn't agree!"

Ieuan groans that it is a shame Darren does not agree.

“Isn’t Anita’s opinion more important than Darren’s?” Hywel demands.

"What a nice surprise, Darren"

At that moment, Darren is arriving at number 7 and is welcomed in by his mother, who says that it is a nice surprise, but can see from his face that there is something wrong.

"You can't go through with this wedding"

“I’m sorry, Mam, but you can’t go through with his wedding,” he says.

"Has Ieuan been a naughty boy?"

She wonders if Ieuan has been a naughty boy.   “It’s not fair on him,” Darren continues,

"All the plans he's got for the two of you"

“I was in the Deri the other night, listening to him discussing all the plans he’s got for the two of you – the travelling – he has to know.   I was dying to tell him.”

"It's not your place to say anything!"

His mother warns him that it is not his place to say anything.   “And it’s not your place to make him commit to something he has no idea about.   Anita argues that they do not know what is wrong

"You're refusing to go for the tests"

and he reminds her that she is refusing to go for the tests.   He can understand why that is – she is scared, but he will help her.

"You have no right to do this, Darren!"

“You have no right to do this, Darren!” she shouts, “Coming from your comfortable home in Canada to destroy the last chance I might have of any happiness!”

"Don't forget Ieuan's happiness"

Darren reminds her that this also concerns  Ieuan’s happiness,

"He's made his decision"

but she insists that he has made his choice.   “That’s only because he doesn’t know what’s ahead of him,” Darren replies, “And neither do you –

"You have to tell him!"

“you have to tell him.”   Anita flatly refuses to do so.

The Monks are gathering . . .

Outside the building where Gloria’s funeral is to take place, the family are gathering;

. . . including Chester, Catrin and Aaron

Chester, Catrin and Aaron are present and greet their mother.

Catrin cannot believe how much Seren has grown,

Sweden likes getting the attention

while Chester recalls that she was a little baby the last time he saw her.

Garry approaches, under guard

Then round the corner, chained to a prison officer, comes Garry Monk

"Dadi, are you coming home?"

and Dani cannot restrain Seren from running to him.   “Dadi, are you coming home?”   Garry replies that unfortunately he cannot do that.

"Why didn't you tell me he was coming?"

Dani is infuriated that he is there and demands why Britt did not her tell he was coming.   “Because I didn’t want anyone stopping him,” is the answer, “Gloria was like a mother to him, too.”

Chester is also pleased to see him

Chester goes to give him a hug, but Dani tries to ignore him;  Garry asks where Gwern is

"I said it was important!"

and is told that he did not want to come.   “I said it was important!” snarls Garry,

"Britt's not responsible for Gwern's decisions"

but Colin intervenes, pointing out that Britt is not responsible for Gwern’s decisions – and today is about Gloria.

The hearse has arrived . . .

They look round to see the hearse approaching

. . . and they file inside

and the organ inside the chapel begins to play as they file inside.

"Flooded?"

In the Deri, Cassie is amazed;  “Flooded?” she demands.

Kelly confirms that there is a burst pipe and they cannot use the kitchen because it has wrecked the electrics and everything.   Mathew thought that the Glyndwr would have a back-up plan for this,

"An apology and a refund!"

but Kelly moans, “An apology and a refund – but that doesn’t help us today, does it?”

"I could give you champagne and nibbles"

Cassie advises that the wedding cannot be held there;  she is so busy this afternoon, but could give them champagne and nibbles.   Kelly goes on that it was a long shot, anyway and ask Mathew if he is ready to give her moral support when she breaks the news to Auntie Neet.

Mathew is deep in thought

He seems to be deep in thought, so she says, “Hello – emergency – earth to Mathew!”

"It's completely bonkers, but come on!"

He announces that he may have an idea;  “It’s completely bonkers, but come on!” and he rushes out of the Deri, followed by Kelly.

Britt delivers the eulogy

At the chapel, Britt is reading the eulogy, “There no words to describe how much of a difference Gloria and her husband, Neil, made to the lives of Garry, Brandon and me.

"We were three vulnerable, lost children . . ."

“We were three vulnerable, lost children in a big world, but then we were welcomed with love, generosity and kindness.

". . . and we were part of a family"

“For the first time in our lives, we were part of a family – family doesn’t have to be a blood relationship.   The true meaning of family is the feeling of belonging, knowing that you are loved and knowing that they will always be there for you, no matter the circumstances and no matter what you’ve done.”

"This hits home to Garry"

This last sentence has a particularly relevance for Garry.

Diane fills some glasses

As Cheryl finishes doing Anita’s hair, Diane is filling some glasses.

"It's lovely, Cheryl"

Anita thinks that her hair is lovely and Diane brings in the Bucks Fizz.

She admires Anita’s hair and would like Cheryl to do something similar with hers.

Anita is invited to choose a lipstick

Then Anita is invited to choose a lipstick.

Then there is an anguished cry from Amanda

There is an anguished cry from upstairs for Diane’s assistance;  Amanda’s zip is stuck.   She goes up to help.

"This one, I think"

Anita chooses a lipstick and suddenly the hairdresser has changed to Sheryl, who has been dead for several years (murdered by Gethin).

"That's exactly what I would choose"

“That’s exactly what I would choose – I know some would go for the pink to match the flowers, but I prefer a natural look.   You don’t want anything to take away from those pretty eyes.

"You're beautiful, Anita"

“You’re beautiful, Anita, always have been.”

Anita complains that it is not a lot of use to her now, but Sheryl disagrees;

"You've landed Ieuan!"

“You’ve landed Ieuan!”   Anita cannot believe that they have ended up together and Sheryl maintains that it is all about timing;  “You can know someone for years and then – out of nowhere, something clicks.

"I'm sure he can't believe his luck"

“Im sure he can't believe his luck, Anita, landing you!”

Anita says that she has tried her best, with Sheryl agreeing that she always does – for all of them.

"This is a two-man job!"

Diane comes hurrying back down the stairs, insisting that she needs some help, as this is a two-man job,

"I'll be back in a minute, Anita"

so Cheryl, who has now reappeared, goes to lend a hand.

"Thanks, Sheryl"

Anita  says, “Thanks, Sheryl,”

"No – Cheryl, with a 'C'"

and is reminded that the name is Cheryl, with a C.

The coffin is manoeuvred

As they manoeuvre the coffin in the chapel,

"How am I going to lift it?"

Garry remarks to his guard, “How am I going to lift it if I’m stuck to you?   Please!”

Is Garry smirking at Britt?"

The guard, perhaps rather unwisely, accedes to Garry’s request and unlocks the handcuff,

The coffin is hoisted . . .

so that Garry can join the rest of the bearers and they prepare to leave the chapel.

. . . but them Garry makes a bolt for the door . . .

Suddenly, Garry mutters, “Sorry, Gloria,” and rapidly heads towards the door;

. . . leaving the prison guard to steady the coffin

the prison guard instinctively grabs the coffin to prevent it falling to the floor, which gives Garry the chance he needed to escape.

Britt is in hot pursuit . . .

He sprints down the aisle, closely followed by Britt, bursts out of the building

. . . as Garry jumps into the hearse . . .

and immediately jumps into the driving seat of the hearse.   Britt is quick enough to get into the passenger seat, shouting, “No way, Gar!”

. . . to make a rapid getaway

The hearse disappears down the drive at high speed.

Ieuan is told the bad news

Mathew breaks the news to Ieuan that the Glyndwr has cancelled this morning because it is flooded,

"But we have found somewhere else"

“But Kelly and I have found somewhere else.   The only thing is you and Anita need to go straight to the registry office after the wedding, because the new location doesn’t have a licence or a marriage officiant.”

"Who's going to officiate, then?"

Ieuan demand who is going to officiate at the wedding;

Mathew is going to do that

it appears that Mathew is going to assume that rĂ´le, which Ieuan finds extremely strange.   “Trust me, everything’s going to be all right,” Mathew tries to reassure him.

Hywel arrives, offering his services . . .

Hywel and Rhys come in;  “Listen, Ieuan, I was worried you wouldn’t have a best man, so, if you haven’t,

. . . as a best man

“I’d like to put myself forward,” Hywel tells him.

"Are you serious?"

Ieuan is overjoyed and is told that his brother would not pull his leg at a time like this.

"I can't walk far in these shoes"

Kelly comes out of the house, followed by Diane and Amanda;  “Is this new location far away?” Diane wants to know.   Amanda moans that she cannot walk far in her shoes.

"Ooh – I've forgotten my clutch bag"

Then Anita suddenly realises that she has forgotten her clutch bag and Kelly offers to go and fetch it.

“No, I’ll get it – I prefer to go,” insists Anita,

"Not the best start to married bliss"

while Amanda maintains that this is not the best start to marital bliss – the hotel cancelling and then forgetting your clutch.

"You'd forget your head if it wasn't attached"

Anita quickly picks up her bag, but sees that someone is sitting on the sofa;  “You’d forget your head if it wasn’t attached,” says Meic.

"Everything's going wrong today"

She points out that everything is going wrong today.   She walks across to Meic, asking if this is a sign she is not supposed to marry Ieuan.

"He should know the truth before the wedding"

“Of course not,” he replies, “But I do think he should know the truth before the wedding – after all, I think his shoulders are broad enough to take it.   And if not, perhaps he’s not the right man for you.”

"Do you remember our wedding day?"

Anita holds Meic’s hand and asks if he remembers their wedding day;

"We almost got married twice"

“I was such a catch we almost got married twice!” he recalls, “Of course I remember – I remember every bit of it – the way you looked and the way you looked at me.

"I was then luckiest man in the whole world"

“I remember thinking that I was the luckiest man in the whole world.”

"Are you happy I'm going to marry Ieuan?"

Anita asks if he is happy that she is going to marry Ieuan – that is, if he still wants to marry her.

"You have a lot of you life left to live"

Meic is quite confident that he will;  “You have a lot of your life left to live, Anita.   I’d like to think of you spending every second of every day with the people and things that make you happy.

"I'll be there, waiting for you"

“And then, one day, when you’re ready, I’ll be there waiting for you.”

When Kelly comes in . . .

The door opens and Kelly is looking for Anita,

. . . Anita is of course alone

who she can see is now sitting alone on the sofa;

"Can you go and get Ieuan for me?"

she asks Kelly to go and get Ieuan for her.

"Why did she run away with him?"

At the remains of the funeral, Colin is furious that Britt will not answer her phone;  “Why did she run away with him?”

"Was the whole thing planned?"

Chester is suspicious that the whole thing was planned – after all the two of them are very close.

"Every time Garry is around . . ."

Colin is not convinced;  “She would have a better plan than running off in a hearse!” he snarls, “But every time Garry is around, Britt does something stupid.”

"They can't get far in a hearse!"

Dani is convinced that the police will find them;  “They can’t get far in a hearse,” she points out.

"You don't want to marry me, do you?"

Ieuan arrives at number 7 and is convinced that she does not want to marry him, but she replies,

"You must know something first"

“I can’t let you marry me until you know something – sit down with me.”

"I've got a problem with my memory"

“I think I’m ill – well, I believe quite strongly that I’ve got some sort of problem with my memory.

"I haven't had the tests yet"

I’m not sure because I haven’t had the tests yet, but you know yourself before I went away I couldn’t remember where I was at the time of the accident.”

"That's normal after a car accident"

Ieuan insists that is normal after an accident, but she wants to be allowed to finish;

"There are things I can't ignore"

“In Canada, I couldn’t remember where I was sometimes – and I thought that Darren was Dwayne.   There are other things that I can’t ignore.”

Ieuan is upset

This has greatly affected Ieuan and she says that she has not told him this lightly,

"I'm scared to have the tests"

but it is heartbreaking.   He says that she has not had the tests yet, so she does not know anything, but she replies that she is scared to have the tests;

"I know there's something badly wrong"

however she knows that there is something badly wrong

"It's a lot for anyone to deal with"

and it is a lot for anyone to deal with.

"It's all right, Anita"

He is in tears by now, but assures her that it is all all right.

"Do you know what's going on or what?"

Round the back of APD, Kelly demands, “Do you know what’s going on or what?”   Darren maintains that he has no idea.   “Are we cancelling this wedding, then?” she continues.

"I think we'll get the answer now"

Darren thinks they may well get the answer now, as Griffiths is approaching.

"Anita's waiting for you, Kelly"

He advises Kelly that Anita is waiting for her;  he will go and take his seat now.   Puzzled, Kelly goes back to Auntie Anita.

"I'll look after her, don't worry"

“I’ll look after her,” Ieuan promises Darren, “Don’t worry,”

He shakes Darren'shand

and shakes Darren’s hand, then they walk into APD, a rather unconventional setting for a wedding.

Inside, Ieuan tells Hywel that everything is great,

The bride comes in

then Anita, accompanied by Kelly, comes in to the decorated venue.

"Kelly – did you do this?"

“Oh, Kelly, did you do this?” gasps Anita and Kelly replies that Mathew is a dab hand with a staple gun.

Anita processes down the aisle . . .

Darren walks with his mother and tells her that he is really happy for her;  she thanks him for everything and they process towards Mathew at the front.

. . . passing Sheryl . . .

On the way Anita sees, or at least thinks she sees, Sheryl

. . . then Meic

and even Meic amongst the gathered villagers.

"Welcome to the wedding"

“Guests, family, and friends, welcome to Anita’s and Ieuan’s wedding,” says Mathew.

"Poor Anita"

In the Deri, Cheryl is assembling bottles and glasses;  she comments, “Poor Anita – the Glyndwr cancelling like that!”

"I'm off to the hospital"

Cassie is now off to the hospital

"Will you be at Megan's party?"

and is asked whether she will be at Megan’s birthday party.

“Seeing Dan is a lot more important than any party,” says Cassie, “I won’t be long.”

"Ieuan Cadwaladr Peredur Griffiths"

At APD, Anita and Ieuan going through the vows;  “I, Anita Pierce, take you, Ieuan Cadwaladr Peredur Griffiths . . .”

This amuses Rhys

This makes a few of the onlookers chuckle.   “. . . to be my husband.”

"To support and cherish"

He promises, “To support and cherish you, from this day onwards, for better or worse.”

"For richer, for poorer"

Anita says, “For richer, for poorer.”

"In sickness and in health"

Ieuan;  “In sickness and in health, to love you and care for you.”

This brings tears to Darren's eyes

This has brought tears to Darren’s eyes.   “And to laugh at your jokes.”

"To appreciate every second of every day"

Anita;  “And to appreciate every second of every day in your company.”

The ring is places on Anita's finger

Ieuan places the ring on Anita’s finger and they kiss.

“I know that Anita and Ieuan are on their way to the registry office, to make it official, but in the meantime, unofficially,

Mathew congratulates them

may I congratulate Mr and Mrs Griffiths?” says Mathew.

Meic is in agreement

Meic is looking on with approval.

"There's no change"

At the hospital, Cassie is told, “There’s no change, but he’s no worse.”

The late Dyff Jones, Mark's father

She walks towards Dan’s room and suddenly comes face-to-face with Dyff Jones, who was believed to have died in 2000;

"I couldn't stay away, Cass!"

he tells her, “I couldn’t stay away, Cass.”

Cassie is speechless

She quite understandably cannot believe her eyes.
