24 July 2024

Dani brings breakfast . . .

Dani approaches Gwern’s bedroom door;  “I’m sorry to wake you so early, but I've got a treat for you – bacon sandwiches.”

. . . but `Gwern's bed is empty

However, she finds that the bed is empty,

Dani is concerned by this

she finds rather upsetting and rushes back downstairs.

Tom is moving in already

Tom has wasted no time in moving into Llwyncelyn;  bags and boxes are scattered everywhere.   “Are you sure you don’t want me to take these upstairs?” he asks Gaynor, but she insists that they have all day to unpack.

"No-one knows you're here"

“What if someone calls round?” he wonders, but she is convinced that no-one knows he is there, so she has got him all to herself.

"You're naughty!"

He describes her as. “Naughty!”

"I want you to go and price 'Twelve Pines'"

In the Tomos ac Ellis office, Rhys is hard at work when Eleri wants him to go and price ‘Twelve Pines’ for her.

"That name rings a bell"

name rings a bell and he discovers that it was on the market six months ago as ‘Trem y Coed’.  [Forest Glimpse]

“They’ve done a good job on it,” she comments, but Rhys seems to disapprove of them selling it for twice the price.   “Yes, shameful – these people taking advantage to make a profit,” says Eleri,

"How much do you charge for a night in number 10?"

“How much do you charge for a night in number 10?”

"I'll go after lunch"

He agrees that he will go after lunch,

"I've told them you'll be there by ten . . ."

but learns that the client has already been told that he will be there by ten o’clock.   He protests that he has loads of work to do and wants to know why she cannot do it.   “You, Rhys, have the skills and you understand the market – you speak the same language,

". . . you'd better get a move on!"

“so you’d better get a move on – it’s a 45 minute journey.”

He suspects that something is going on,

He hides his phone

so he hides his phone under some papers in the filing tray,

She obviously cannot wait to get rid of him

by which time she is standing by the door with his briefcase.   “Just don’t complain if the house details are not up to date by the end of the day,” he warns.

"You can finish it in your lunch hour"

She advises that he can take take an early lunch hour and can finish his work then.

"Britt thinks he's in the garage"

Dani tells Jinx that Britt believes Gwern is in the garage and is not sure what she is going to tell him,

Jinx wonders what she will tell Gwern

as she leaves the house.

The unpacking has been abandoned

Gaynor and Tom have abandoned any unpacking and are at present snogging on the sofa;  suddenly they hear a voice and knocking on the back door.   “Gaynor, will you open up?”

The postman is at the (locked) door

As there is no reply, the voice continues, “The door’s locked – I’ll go round the front – I’ve got a parcel for you.”

"You can't ignore poor Mark, can you?"

Tom laughs, “You can’t ignore poor Mark, can you?” so Gaynor goes to the front door.

"You could have put that through the door"

Mark hands her the small parcel, which would have easily fitted through the letterbox, and maintains that he would not have been able to come for a chat if he had done that.

"You're here already?"

Then he notices Tom;  “You’re here already?”   Tom says that he had a day off, so has made the most of it.

"I must go and tell Cheryl the good news!"

Mark is eager to go and tell Cheryl y-the good news and suggests that they could come over for lunch today;

"You can have some peace tonight"

“If we come over at lunchtime, you can have some peace tonight.”

Gaynor is excited

 Gaynor looks quite excited.

Dani discovers . . .

Dani peers into the garage office,

. . . that Gwern is indeed in the garage

where she sees Gwern sleeping on the sofa;  she awakens him and hands him a coffee.

"Are you really that unhappy in Jinx's house?"

“You can’t sleep here – it’s not safe,” but as usual he does not say anything.   “Are you really that unhappy in Jinx’s house?”

He nods his head,

"I want you to be happy"

so she goes on, “I want you to be happy.”

"I'm the last on everyone's priorities"

“It’s hard when I’m last on the list of people’s priorities,” he complains, “Mam, Dad, you –

"I just want things to go back to normal"

“I just want things to go back to normal, when we were in the Deri – you, me, Seren, Gabs.”

"We've all missed you"

regrets that they cannot go back there and stresses how they have all missed him;  “Gabs and Seren was so excited that you were coming home – we are waiting for you.”

"And Jinx, too?"

“And Jinx too?” he sneers as he picks up his bag and walks out;

He leaves Dani in the garage

we see that the garage office has acquired a number 24 on the door.

Back at Maes-y-Deri, Cheryl wants to know what this surprise is;

"We're going out to lunch, with Gaynor – and Tom!"

Mark announces that they are going out to lunch – with Gaynor – and Tom!”

"Do you think I should curl my hair?"

She cannot believe that he has arrived already;  “Why didn’t you say instead of wasting time like that?   I need to have a shower and do something with my hair.   Do you think I should curl it?”

"You look lovely as you are"

Mark replies that she looks lovely as she is, but she is insistent on looking her best.   “It’s only a bit of lunch,” he protests,

"I want my sister to be proud of me"

but Cheryl wants her sister to be proud of her when she is introduced to Tom.   She will go and curl her hair, just in case.

In the deli, Diane is on the phone;  “Someone must have jump leads,” she says, as yet another different waitress brings her drink.

"Don't burp down the phone!"

Hywel comes in as Diane continues, “Don’t burp down the phone!   Just sort this out!”   (She is evidently talking to Dai.)

"Dai has gone for a drive with DJ's trailer"

Hywel comes across and learns that Dai has taken DJ’s trailer out for a spin;

"He can be hard work sometimes!"

“He can be hard work sometimes!”   She reveals that there is no more news about Jason,

"We're going to the river to say goodbye"

but she has arranged for Dai, herself and DJ to go down to the river where Jason was last seen, “Just to say goodbye.”

Hywel will be thinking of them and Diane enquires how it went in Aberystwyth;

"I had a lot of interesting conversations"

Hywel had a lot of interesting conversations.

"Have you heard about some 'significant developments'?"

“Have you heard about ‘significant developments’ for Cwmderi?   Oswyn Evans said at the conference – I thought you would have heard.”

"You were there on my behalf"

“You said you would attend on my behalf,” she reminds him;  he confirms that nothing has come up.   Diane is curious as to what ‘significant’ means.

"He changed the subject, just like that"

“When Oswyn realised I had no idea, he changed the subject, just like that,” Hywel replies.   She does not like the sound of that;  if she hears anything else she will let Hywel know.

"I hope everything is in order"

A stranger is in the Tomos ac Ellis office, looking critically at some paperwork;  Eleri hopes that everything is in order and that there are no surprises there.

Rhys appears, as planned . . .

She is eager to get the client to sign and at that moment Reese returns, as intended,

. . . to collect his phone

explaining that he has left his phone behind.

"This is a private matter – a loan"

Eleri informs him that this is a private matter – a loan.   Looking over their shoulders,

It looks more like a housing estate to Rhys

Rhys can see that it is the details of a proposed housing development, then leaves the office,

The document is duly signed

just as the client is signing the document.

Diane is looking thoughtful . .

Diane is still sitting in the deli, looking thoughtful,

. . . when Dani arrives

when Dani arrives at the next table;  she is looking considerably stressed.

"Cheesecake before lunch, is it?"

“Cheesecake before lunch, is it?” comments Diane.

"I should be asking you that, Diane"

Dani apologises for being in her own little world;  when Diane asks if she is all right, Dani maintains that she should be asking that.

"I'm fed up with telling people the same thing"

“If I am honest with you, I’m fed up with telling people the same thing,” Diane groans.

"It's Gwern"

Dani explains that her problem is with Gwern;  “I don’t know what to do with him – it’s as if he’s lost.”

"You have a lot of responsibility on your shoulders"

Diane appreciates that she has a lot of responsibility on her shoulders, but she worries, “What if I’m not the right person to do this?”   When told that Britt will support her,

"You know what Britt's like"

Dani sighs, “You know what she’s like – her heart’s in the right place, but you can’t tell, can you?   Things aren’t great between Jinx and Gwern, either.”

"Think about what's right for you"

Diane can understand that, but reminds Dani, “There’s nothing wrong with thinking about what’s right for you, either.   It wasn’t easy to let Ifan go to Sara, I can tell you.”

"At least, Ifan has his mother"

“Well, at least Ifan has his mother – Gwern doesn’t have anyone, so I need to make this work somehow,” says Dani and Diane is confident that she will do so.

Gwern intends to make brownies

Gwern goes to the MFC flat, where Kylie tells him that Britt has not had a chance to sort things out yet;  “I’ve got a plan – we’re going to make brownies,” he announces, Britt loves brownies.”

"Oh yeah – make yourself look useful"

Kylie can see his reasoning;  “Oh, yeah – making yourself look useful – nice!”

"When I move in, I'll make loads of them"

He tells her that when he moves in he will make loads of brownies,

"Col is not going to be happy"

Kylie doubts that Colin will be happy.

“Wait until you taste them,” he goes on,

"It's the only good thing I got out of the Detention Centre"

“I’m quite skilled, actually – it’s the only good thing I got out of the Detention Centre.   Don't tell me you’re a vegan?”

"There's a chance I'll have to move out"

She confirms that she is not, but she heard Colin and Britt talking;  “If you move in, there’s a chance I’ll have to move out.”

Gwern quietens down

This tends to dampen his enthusiasm.

"One latté and one flat white, please"

Ffion comes into the deli accompanied by a stranger and orders one latté and one flat white;

"Did you find that paperwork?"

she goes across to Hywel, revealing that her companion is from the examination board, and asks, “Did you find that paperwork on Deri Fawr?”

"Griffiths has it"

He regrets that he has been unable to find anything;  “I don’t know if Griffiths is back – he’s got the paperwork.”

Ffion says that she is desperate to find out;

"I'd hate to lose the house"

“You did promise – and I’d hate to lose the house!”   He adds that it will cost her, but she replies, “Anything – really!”

Tom is searching for something

Tom is emptying one of the kitchen cupboards, which Gaynor finds rather intriguing.

"I can't find the 'ras el hanout'?"

“I can’t find the ‘ras el hanout[a mixture of over a dozen spices in different proportions],” he complains.

"I hate the stuff!"

She replies that he will not find any, because she hates the stuff.

"It's my speciality"

“Chicken with ras el hanout is my speciality”, he explains

"We shall have to make something different, then!"

and that she concludes that they will have to make something different.

"But then it won't be special"

“But then it won’t be special!” he groans.

Gaynor is sure that if she does not like it, Cheryl will definitely not;  he thinks that perhaps they should cancel, but Gaynor points out they are only coming over for bit of lunch

"I have a quiche in the fridge"

and she has a quiche in the fridge.

He insists that they need something a bit more special than quiche

"You're just so cute sometimes"

and she smiles, “You’re just so cute sometimes – you’re stressed because you’re meeting my sister.”

"I want them to like me"

He maintains that he just does not want to mess things up;  “Your family’s important to you, so they’re important to me as well.   I want them to like me.”

Gaynor assures him that he will not make a mess of things;  “They will like you what ever you cook.

"Why don't we just order pizzas?"

“Why don’t we just order pizzas, a couple of lagers and enjoy ourselves?

"What do you say?"

“What do you say?”

"Did you find Gwern?"

When Dani returns to number 9, Jinx asks if she found Gwern,

"He thinks I've chosen you over him"

“Yes, he was in the garage – he hates thinking that I’ve chosen you over him.   Gwyneth chose you over him – and you can’t blame him for feeling like that.

"I'm scared he's going to do something silly"

“I’m scared that he’s going to do something silly, like run off to Newcastle.”

"He won't do that"

When Jinx maintains that he will not do that, she demands, “Are you sure about that?   Jinx, I’ve raised him – all that time in the Deri, it was me, Seren and him –

"I can't just abandon him"

“I cant just abandon him.”

Jinx wonders where this is leading;

"Do you want me to move out?"

“Do you want me to move out?”

There is no reply

She does not reply.

"They're amazing!"

In the MFC flat, Kylie samples one of Gwern’s brownies and her verdict is, “They’re amazing – making brownies is an important life skill!”   Then she can see that Gwern is looking doubtful.

"Where  would you go if I moved in?"

“Where would you go if I moved in?” he asks.

"It depends on where they could find me a place"

She answers that it would depend on where social services could find her a place.

"What exactly does that mean?"

He wants to know exactly what that means, and she imagines that she would probably go back to the residential centre.

“Because I’m an ex-con?” he demands, but Kylie dismisses it as not really a big deal –

"I'll be 16 before long"

“she will be 16 before long, then she will get a job or join the army.

“My life will be just starting out – I’ll send you a postcard – and if you’re lucky, I’ll come visiting – for brownies!”

Gwern is having second thoughts

This gives Gwern something to think about.

"I need to get some figures for the examiner"

Ffion gets home and informs Hywel, “Come in for a minute – I need to get some figures for the examiner.”   He has managed to get the papers about Deri Fawr which she required.

"There might be a problem . . ."

“I had a look to make sure they were the right ones, and there might be a problem.

". . . the land is owned by AC Valley Solutions"

It says that Deri Fawr’s land is owned by AC Valley Solutions.   The name rings a bell, but I have checked online and there’s nothing there.”

"I will check with my solicitor"

Ffion will check with her solicitor and it must go now as she is running late.

"Let me know who they are"

Hywel asks to be informed who the firm is.

Eleri is on her way out

Eleri is about to leave Tomos ac Ellis just as Rhys returns;

"Perfect timing!"

“Perfect timing – I’ve got a viewing in 10 minutes – I didn’t want to lock up and turn away clients,” she says.

Rhys conducts a search . . .

Now that he is alone in the office he does some investigating,

. . . but cannot find any evidence . . .

but cannot find anything interesting;

. . . and the filing cabinet is locked

he comes to the filing cabinet, which he finds is locked, so assumes that there is something there she does not want him to see.

Gwern is back at number 9

Gwern comes back to number 9

"This situation with Jinx . . ."

and tells Dani, “I’ve been thinking about this situation with Jinx . . .”

Jinx says that he is going

However, before he can say any more, Jinx comes down with a couple of bags and announces that he is off.

"He's decided that it's for the best"

Dani tells Gwern that Jinx has decided it is for the best.   “I’ll phone you,” Jinx says and leaves the house.   Gwern says that he is so sorry,

"Jinx will be fine"

but is told that he has been through a hard time and that Jinx will be fine.   Gwern does not think it is worth continuing what he had to say.

The visitors arrive at Llwyncelyn

Mark and Cheryl arrive for lunch at Llwyncelyn;  Gaynor tells her sister that she looks gorgeous.   “She’s been like this all morning!” laughs Mark,

"Where are you hiding this Tom, then?"

and Cheryl enquires where Gaynor is hiding Tom.   She is told that he is upstairs, getting changed.

"Can we have a couple of lagers?"

Mark asks if they can have couple of lagers;  he is told that Tom went to get them specially.

Tom comes downstairs

Then Tom appears and is greeted by Mark.

He sees Cheryl

When Cheryl sees him

"Dave!"

she looks terrified, backs away and gasps, “Dave!”
