Gwern is about to walk out |
Dani is doing some ironing when Gwern hurries downstairs, carrying a bag, and is about to leave the house.
"Where are you going?" |
She asks where he is going and is informed, “To live with Auntie Britt – I’m moving out – today.”
"Oh, no – I've left my charger" |
Then he realises he has left his charger behind and goes back upstairs.
“Did you know about this?” Dani demands,
"No – it's news to me" |
but Jinx is completely in the dark.
Sioned hurries across the road |
Sioned comes out of the deli and crosses the road when she sees a familiar figure looking at the bench by the end of the alley;
Dr Morris is looking at the memorial bench |
it coincidentally bears the inscription ‘in memory of Glan Morris’.
“Dr Morris!” she shouts, “What are you doing in Cwmderi?”
"I had an appointment in Cwrtmynach" |
“I had an appointment in Cwrtmynach, so I happened to be passing,” he replies.
"Whatever you want, on the house" |
If he is on his lunch break she welcomes him to come into the deli and he can have whatever he wants, on the house.
“Please – it’s the least I can do after last week,” she insists, but he stipulates one condition –
"Call me Dan outside the hospital" |
that she calls him Dan outside the hospital, as it is a bit less clinical.
"After you, then, Dan" |
“After you, then, Dan!” she says.
Tom is outside T&E |
Tom is passing Tomos ac Ellis and looks in the window;
He ignores a call from Gaynor . . . |
his phone sounds and when he sees that it is Gaynor calling, he rejects the call,
. . . and smiles |
smiling as he looks at the property details.
"You had no right to talk to Gwern behind my back" |
Dani has gone straight to the MFC flat; “You had no right to talk to Gwern behind my back!” she tells Britt.
"And behind my back as well!" |
Colin points out that it was behind his back as well.
Britt says that she was going to talk to them but had not had a chance yet.
“He’s packed his bags, OK? He’s coming here today!” Dani exclaims.
This troubles Colin, who is concerned about Kylie; “She’s only just come back – having Gwern here would ruin everything.”
"I'll sort it out with the agency" |
Britt is naïvely confident that they will sort everything out with the agency,
"They could take Kylie away from us!" |
but Colin warns, “They could take Kylie away from us – do you realise that?”
"Listen, you two!" |
Britt rants on, “Listen, you two – he was desperate – all the mess and noise over there – he didn’t know where to turn – what was I supposed to do?”
"Things will improve, Britt" |
Dani concedes that it is a difficult time, but things will improve. “Yes, I told him that – and it didn’t work,” sneers Britt. As the buzzer sounds, she continues, “I’m trying to do the right thing – and he’s family!”
"Come up, love" |
She tells Gwern to come up, but Dani is adamant that she has to tell him he must stay at number 9.
"Think of Kylie!" |
Colin agrees with this, warning Britt, “Think of Kylie!”
"What are you doing here?" |
Gwern looks at Dani and demands, “What are you doing here?” She answers that she came to have a word with Britt to see what is best for him. He points out that he has already been told that he can move in.
"There are a couple of things to sort out first" |
Britt informs him that there are are a couple of things to sort out first; “The spare room is a mess – boxes up to the ceiling.” Gwern says that he only needs a bed and can sleep on the sofa if he has to.
“Dani’s right – you need a tidy bed and your own room.”
"Like the one you've got across there road" |
Colin adds, Yes, like the one you’ve got over the road,” so Gwern concludes that he cannot move there. Britt wants to sort things out first and he walks out.
Cheryl is making a cup of tea |
At Llwyncelyn, Cheryl is making a cup of tea when Gaynor comes in with her laptop;
"There's an infinity pool at this hotel" |
“Hey, Cher, there’s an infinity pool in this hotel – they do a sound bath massage in the spa.”
"Shouldn't you wait for him to answer your phone calls?" |
Cheryl suggests, “Don’t you think you should wait for Tom to answer your phone calls before you book that?”
"He's just busy" |
Gaynor is convinced that he is just busy and will phone her back tomorrow. “It’s a bit weird how little you talk to each other,” Cheryl goes on and is told that they just do not have to worry about things like that. In any case he does not understand his new phone. (The phone he was using outside Tomos ac Ellis did not look anything like new.)
"You deserve someone who's not too busy to answer the phone" |
“I’m not trying to be negative, Gaynor, but you deserve someone who is not too busy to answer the phone to you.”
"She might have a point" |
This makes her think.
Gwern sits on the bench |
Gwern tosses down his bag on the bench by the alley and sits down miserably beside it.
Kylie comes along |
Kylie happens to be passing and introduces herself to him; “I’m staying with Britt and Colin – are you going somewhere?”
He maintains a sullen silence |
He does not reply and she continues, looking across the road, “That’s the place you tried to burn down isn’t it? Colin told me what happened – why did you do it?
"I'm just curious, really" |
“I’m not judging, by the way, just curious, really. What’s your plan?”
Dani arrives |
As Dani comes to take him back to number 9,
"I'm moving in with you" |
he replies, “To survive until Britt sorts a room for me – I’m moving in with you.”
She is looking forward to it |
Kylie looks quite pleased about this.
DJ is working on the horse box |
Around the back of APD, DJ is starting on the work to convert the horse box. “Where did you get all these supplies?” ask Mathew,
"I hope you're not stealing stock from APD" |
“I hope you’re not stealing stock from APD.”
“No – I went over to Tom Jeremiah’s warehouse – Dad insisted I should go there.
"Dad's investing in my new enterprise |
“He’s decided to invest in my new enterprise as well.”
Mathew sighs, “Does he fancy investing money back into APD? I heard from the insurance company this morning – they’ve rejected the claim.”
"Sorry to hear that" |
DJ says that he is sorry to hear that.
"It's not your fault, is it?" |
“It’s not your fault, is it?” Mathew groans
"How about we go for lunch?" |
and DJ suggests that they should go for lunch.
Dani has a few ideas |
There is a knock on Gwern’s bedroom door; Dani has some ideas about what would help him to settle.
"Find a job – make friends" |
“You should think about the future – find a job – make friends.
"Gwern, talk to me, please!" |
“Gwern, talk to me, please!”
"There's no point" |
replies that there is no point;
"I want you to be happy here" |
“Of course there is – I want to sort this out – I want you to be happy here.”
"You wanted me out of the way in the Detention Centre!" |
Gwern cannot understand why she even wants him there; “You wanted me out of the way in the Detention Centre!” Dani confesses that if she could turn the clock back, she would.
"I thought I was doing the right thing" |
“I make mistakes, too – at the time I thought I was doing the right thing – what was best for you. I’m sorry if you think I turned my back on you, but I’m here now and I want to make it up to you.
"Do you think you can forgive me"?" |
“Do you think you can forgive me?”
“You’re not the problem, though, are you?” replies Gwern,
"That wet wipe you call a boyfriend!" |
“It’s that wet wipe you call a boyfriend!”
She urges him to look at things from Jinx’s point of view;
"You tried to burn his house down" |
“You tried to burn his house down, you put him in danger – and he is letting you live here.”
"Yes, the house Mam left for me!" |
“Yes – in the house Mam left for me! I can’t live with him, I’m sorry,” Gwern insists, if you don’t tell him, I’ll have no choice but to live with Auntie Britt, do I?”
"The best I've ever tasted!" |
Dan Morris declares that the soup brought to him by Sioned was the best that he has ever tasted;
"Afternoon clinic is calling" |
“But now afternoon clinic is calling.” He stands up but drops something on the floor,
Sioned feels dizzy |
which Sioned bends to pick up, making her feel dizzy.
"I just forget I'm much bigger these days" |
“I just forget that I’m much bigger these days,” she says, looking into his eyes.
DJ happens to see this . . . |
At that very moment when the two of them are holding hands, DJ passes the window, with Mathew, and takes exception to what he sees.
. . . and he angrily intervenes |
He bursts in and demands, “How could you? I turn my back for two minutes and you’re sniffing around another bloke!”
"I thought girls were my thing these days!" |
Sioned snarls, “I thought girls were my things these days, so why are you worried?”
This does nothing to placate DJ, who continues to threaten,
"Keep your hands to yourself!" |
“These kids already have a father, so keep your hands to yourself!”
Mathew bundles him outside |
Mathew has to manhandle DJ out of the door,
"I'm so sorry, Dan" |
and Sioned apologises profusely to Dan.
He realises he made a fool of himself |
DJ is sitting glumly in the Deri with his lunch; Jinx comes in, looking for Dani, and discovers her hidden in a corner.
"I had been hoping to pop to Carmarthen" |
She had been hoping to pop to Carmarthen to get stuff for the job, plus a couple of new outfits.
"And you had to sort Britt and Gwern out instead" |
“And you had to sort Britt and Gwern out instead,” he says, “Did you get any sense out of him about why he wants to leave?”
"He needs something to look forward to |
Dani chickens out of telling him the truth, maintaining that he just needs something to look forward to – something to fill his time.
“College, perhaps or a job,”
"I could give him a job . . ." |
so Jinx volunteers to give him a job; then he could earn some money
". . . and we could get to know each other" |
and they could get to know each other properly. Dani is not sure about that, but he pleads to be given a chance to try.
"You're one in a million, do you know that?" |
“You’re one in a million, do you know that?” she tells him
"Of course I do!" |
and he answers that of course he does.
"Don't be too hard on DJ" |
Mathew comes into the deli to speak to Sioned; “Look, don’t be too hard on DJ, Sioned,” he urges her,
"It would help if he didn't make such a spectacle!" |
but she maintains that it would help if he did not make such a spectacle there.
"He feels terrible about it" |
“He feels terrible about it,” Mathew points out,
"Good!" |
which she regards as good thing.
"He's trying really hard" |
“He’s trying really hard with this new business – and things are not easy for him at the moment, are they?” continues Mathew, “This is not the way he was hoping things would turn out between you – especially with the children as well.
"He could still do with a friend" |
“So although you’re not together any more, he could still do with a friend.”
Tom is back with another bottle |
Tom arrives at Llwyncelyn with another bottle; “Only the best for the best woman,” he tells Gaynor,
She escapes his kiss |
but she does not seem eager to kiss him so he wonders if everything is all right.
"Don't you think it's odd we don't talk much on the phone?" |
“Don’t you think it’s odd that we don’t talk that often on the phone?” she wonders, “Cheryl questioned it, because I couldn’t get hold of you this morning – I know you’re busy and you don’t understand the new phone,
"You weren't the best at keeping in touch" |
“but you weren’t the best at keeping in touch even before then.”
He is sorry about that; if it is important to her that they talk more on phone,
"I'll make more of an effort" |
he will make more of an effort.
"I've got a confession to make" |
“And I've got a confession to make – I intentionally didn’t answer your call this morning – I didn’t want to spoil the surprise.”
He shows her the house details |
He produces the details of several houses which he collected from Tomos ac Ellis.
"I heard you were a bit stressed" |
Sioned finds DJ working on the horse box; “I heard that you were a bit stressed,” she begins. He replies that if she is there to complain about earlier . . .
"I came to see how you're getting on |
but she stops him by continuing, “I came to see how you’re getting on with this.”
"I want to make it a success" |
“I want to make it a success to get a decent income to contribute towards the twins,” he tells her.
"No man's going to take your place" |
She assures him that no man is going to take his place; “It doesn’t matter who I meet,
"You are the twins' father" |
“you are the twins’ father – you always will be. It looks as if you’re going to have a busy summer in this.”
"Dad has insisted on helping" |
DJ sighs, “We’ll, see, shall we? Because Dad has insisted on helping.” Sioned wonders what could possibly go wrong.
"You're thinking of moving to Cwmderi permanently?" |
“You’re thinking of moving to Cwmderi permanently?” gasps Gaynor,
"Perhaps it was a stupid idea . . ." |
and he thinks that perhaps it was a stupid idea – he often has them.
". . . I just want to be closer to you" |
“I do want to move here – well, I don’t know. I like you, Gaynor, I like you a lot and I find it difficult being far away. I just want to be closer to you, but I understand if you feel this is too sudden.”
"Have any of them taken your fancy?" |
She enquires whether any of these has taken his fancy and he says there is quite a pretty cottage there somewhere, but it is a bit too far away.
"That's rather expensive!" |
She also regards it as rather expensive for what it is. “Like I said, a stupid idea,” he moans.
"I know someone who's looking for a lodger" |
“I know someone who’s looking for a lodger – it’s a nice house and the rent would be reasonable,” Gaynor tells him,
"I don't know about sharing a house" |
he does not know how he feels about sharing a house with someone.
"Would you share a house with me?" |
“Would you share a house with me?” she asks; she seems eager for him to move in, if he wants.
"Only if you want this as much as I do" |
“Only if you want this as much as I do.”
Gaynor seems enthusiastic |
He promises that he does and Gaynor kisses him.
"We've got a lot to discuss!" |
Colin returns home early from his shift in the shop; “We’ve got a lot to discuss,” he tells Britt.
"I'm exhausted, Col" |
She says that she is exhausted, but he is adamant that they have to talk now.
She promises that she will sort something out,
"He's not coming here!" |
but Colin emphasises, “He’s not coming here! Look, Britt, we’ve worked very hard over the last few weeks, haven’t we, just to get Kylie back?”
What neither of them know is that Kylie is listening to this conversation. “We’ve worked a lot on our relationship, on our marriage,” he goes on, and Britt apologises for going behind his back.
"I'll phone the fostering agency" |
She will phone the fostering agency to find out where they stand.
"We['re the last resort for poor Kylie! |
“How many times do I have to say it? Gwern has got a place – we’re the last resort for poor Kylie.
Kylie is very concerned |
“The authorities won’t let them both live here!”
"You don't know that" |
Britt answers that he does not know that,
"I'm not going to take the risk!" |
so he shouts, “I’m not going to take the risk!” Kylie is becoming worried now, as Britt explains that she has given Gwern her word that he can live there.
"Your word is never worth anything, is it!? |
“Yes – but your word is never worth anything, is it?” he snarls,
He leaves the flat again |
before picking up his keys and leaving again.
"He'slooking for somewhere to live . . ." |
Gaynor is in the Deri, telling Cheryl, “He’s been looking for somewhere to live so that we can be closer, but rents are so expensive –
". . . so I thought he could pay rent to me" |
“so I thought it would make more sense if he paid rent to me instead.”
"As a lodger or a boyfriend?" |
“As a lodger or a boyfriend?” enquires Cheryl, “Are you sure you’re happy with this?”
"This is what I want" |
Gaynor is certain that this is what she wants,
"Without your little sister vetting him first?" |
but is told, “I’m not happy that he is moving in when your little sister hasn’t vetted him first.”
Gaynor promises that she will meet him soon, but tonight he has gone back to North Wales to pack, so she thought perhaps they could have a girly night together.
"You'll be too busy to see your little sister?" |
“In case you’ll be to busy to see your little sister for a while, is it?” laughs Cheryl.
"How would you like to help out?" |
Jinx returns home and wants to talk to Gwern; “Right, how would you like to help out at the best pizza place in the valley? I will pay you as well – a little more than the minimum wage and if you impress the boss, you might get a bonus.
"What do you say?" |
“What do you say?”
Gwern says precisely nothing |
Once again Gwern says nothing, so Jinx continues, “I’m trying to offer you a job here – some money in your pocket.”
"Don't walk away when I'm talking to you!" |
Gwern gets up and is about to go upstairs. “Don’t walk away when I’m talking to you . . .”
“Just get lost!” says Gwern.
"We're trying to help" |
Jinx insists that he and Dani are trying to help, but is informed, “I don’t want help!”
It is pointed out to him that he has nowhere else to go, so he has no choice. The least he can do is show some appreciation.
"You're a scrounger who conned my mother!" |
“No way – you’re a scrounger who conned my mother! Now you think you can use Dani!”
Things appear to be escalating |
As this argument appears to be about to turn physical, Danny comes in and demands what is going on.
"Jinx was going to hit me!" |
“Jinx was going to hit me because I refused to do child labour,” Gwern replies,
Indeed, he does look rather tempted |
“You haven’t told him, have you?” he asks Dani.
She instructs Gwern to go upstairs now
"What haven't you told me?" |
and Jinx wants to know what he has not been told.
"You're the reason he doesn't want to live here" |
“You’re the reason he doesn’t want to be here any more – I didn’t tell you because I didn’t want to choose between you.”
Jinx insists that she does not have to choose but she reminds him that they almost hit each other. “I’m sorry I’m only telling you this now – I just want what’s best for everyone,
"You can't live under the same roof" |
“but Gwern is right – you and him living under the same roof isn’t going to work.”
Jinx ponders the implications of this |
Jinx is, understandably, speechless.
