9 July 2024

Kath is in quite a state

In the Deri flat, Kath is sitting at the table in tears when Eleri comes into the room,

"It's a bit late for tears, isn't it?"

commenting, “It’s a bit late for tears, isn’t it?”   Kath tells her to stop, but Eleri continues, nevertheless, “It’s easy to cry, Kath, but we both know why we’re in this situation.”

"Haven't you learned your lesson?"

Cassie walks in and demands, “What’s going on?   Haven’t you learned your lesson?   You’re as bad as each other – what would Brynmor say if he saw you?

"Stop it – you're like children!"

“Stop it – you’re like children!   You can’t carry on like this!”

"It's the hospital"

Then the phone rings and Cassie answers it;  she finds that it is a call for Kath and advises that it is the hospital.

"Are you sure that's where they live?"

In the shop flat, Howard asks Mathew if he is sure that is where they live;  “Yes,” he replies, “That’s where she and Ioan lived about a year ago.”

"What if they don't live there any more?"

Howard raises the question, “And what if they don’t live there now?

"We have to find them!"

“We have to find them – I thought one of my sisters would still be in contact with Tegwen.”

Mathew imagines that Ioan has isolated her from everyone,

"We can't leave her with that pig!"

but Howard is adamant, “We can’t leave her with that pig!”   This attitude troubles Mathew,

"Don't do anything stupid!"

and he points out that Howard must not do anything stupid when they get there.

"We're only there to talk to him"

If they see Ioan, they are simply there to talk to him.

"Iolo – welcome home!"

Gaynor is working in the pharmacy and anxiously looking at her phone when a customer arrives, in the form of Iolo;  she welcomes him back from his travels and he asks how things are with her.

"Is Maya here?"

He has come to see Maya, but is told that she is on a course in Llanelli;  “I was hoping I could take her out for lunch,” Iolo sighs, disappointedly, “I haven’t seen her since I got back.”

"No, everything's fine"

He gets the impression that something is wrong and, after initially denying this,

"I've made a fool of myself"

Gaynor confesses that she has made a fool of herself – as usual, but she does not want to bore him with the details.

However, he insists, so she tells him, “I’ve lent money to someone and I haven’t heard from them since.”

"Have you thought about going to the police?"

He wonders whether she has thought about going to the police,

"It's my boyfriend, Tom"

but she explains, “I lent the money to my boyfriend, Tom.   Do you know what?   It’s not about the money –

"I was really, really starting to like the guy"

“I was really, really starting to like the guy.”

"They were trying to fight and we had to hold them back!"

Rhys is at number 21, describing to his father what happened in the Deri, “They were trying to fight and we had to hold them back!”   Hywel feels sorry for Brynmor, then the doorbell rings,

"Kath said Eleri is a complete cook"

as Rhys goes on, “And Kath said that Eleri is a complete crook.”   His father says that Kath should recognise a crook.

"I wanted a quick word with you, Hywel"

The visitor is Diane, who is sorry to disturb them, but wanted a quick word with Hywel.

"I've cancelled the private detective"

She reveals that she has cancelled the private detective and everyone who has contributed will get their money back.

"Why – has something happened?"

Rhys imagines that something has happened to cause this, but she is now of the opinion that leaving it to the police is best.

"There's a conference next week"

“No, the reason I’m here is to ask you something – there’s a conference next week of the District Councils Network,” she says, as she hands over a file of papers, “Would you be willing to go on my behalf?   All the information is there.”

"Yes, I'll do that, Diane"

Hywel agrees that he will do so, noticing that Oswyn Evans will be there;

"Oswyn and I were mates at college"

“Oswyn and I were mates in college.”

"He is a high-flyer with the government"

Diane remarks that now he is a high-flyer with the government.

"He was pretty 'high' in college!"

“He was pretty ‘high’ in college – I’m not sure about flying though!” laughs Hywel.

"Whoa, Diane!"

Then he notices something;  “Whoa, Diane!   You’re down to make a speech on Children’s Services.”

"Yes, I've got another favour to ask you"

She then discloses that she has another favour to ask him and he does not look very happy about it.

The visitors approach Brynmor

Brynmor is lying in his hospital bed when Kath and Eleri can be seen approaching.

"He looks so weak"

Eleri says that he looks so weak, but Kath thinks that he looks a bit better today.   “We’ll have to adjust his diet when he gets out of here,” Eleri adds,

"You cook with too much grease!"

“You cook with too much grease.”

Kath points out that the last thing he needs is for them to be bickering;  “For Brynmor’s sake, just stop, please.”

Brynmor is pleased to see them

He wakes and is pleased to see them;  Eleri attempts to hug him,

"Careful – he's fragile!"

but is warned by Kath that he is fragile.

"Not too fragile for a Cwtch, I hope"

“Not too fragile for a Cwtch, I hope,” he says.   Kath confirms that he looks better today.

"Look, Diane, I'm not keen"

“Look, Diane, I’m not keen on standing in front of an audience when I know what I’m going to say, but . . .”   Diane reminds him that he was a teacher.   “There’s a big difference between children and Oswyn Evans!” he answers.

"Not afraid of Oswyn, are you?"

Kath imagines he is afraid of Oswyn and insists that it is a great opportunity for him to show how he is getting on – and she has already started the speech, as he will see from the documents.

"Thank you for your help, Hywel"

She rapidly takes her leave, thanking him very much for his help.   She has promised to pop in to see Kelly on the way home.

"You a lapdog for Diane!"

Rhys is very amused, “I never thought I’d see the day when Dad was a lapdog for Diane!”

"Don't you have any work to do?"

His father asks whether he has any work to do and he casually replies,

"I'm not going in today – or ever again . . .

“I’m not going in today – or ever again – I’m not afraid of my boss!   I haven’t told Eleri yet –

". . . I can't work for then crook for another second!"

“but I can’t work for that crook for another second.!

The APD van reaches the Lewis Arms

The APD van pulls into a car park in Heol Goch, opposite the Lewis Arms pub run by Ioan;  “I can’t wait to get hold of the swine!” rages Howard.   Mathew reminds him of what they agreed earlier – they have to keep a cool head.

“I don’t want to be here all day, right?” Howard snarls

"Is that him?"

and at that moment they see Ioan coming out of the pub with a noticeboard which he deploys outside.

They get out of the van

Mathew confirms that is the man they are looking for, so they get out of the van.

"What are the Chuckle Brothers doing here?"

Ioan sneers, “What are the Chuckle Brothers doing here?”

"What have you done to Tegwen?"

Howard comes straight to the point;  “What have you done to Tegwen?”   The reply is that she does not live there any more.   Mathew is convinced that he is lying,

"We saw the bruises!"

stressing that they have seen the bruises that he inflicted.

Howard adds, “And we’re going to do a lot worse to you!”

"Are you not listening or just thick?"

“Are you not listening or just thick?” asks Ioan, “I haven’t seen Tegwen for months – she left me and took Ken with her!”

"They're next to the sofa"

Brynmor is asking Kath to bring him some magazines which she will find in a pile next to the sofa.   “The nurses will be delighted that you’re bringing your clutter here,” comments Eleri,

"There will be less clutter at home"

and Kath points out there will be less clutter at home.

"Are you two agreeing on something?"

Brynmor looks at the pair of them and demands, “Sorry – are you two agreeing on something?”   He smiles at the concept.

"So you haven't seen her since?"

“So you haven’t seen her since?” Mathew asks and Ioan wonders where they saw her.   Howard growls that it was in a strip club in Swansea.

"She might as well get paid for sleeping with men!"

“What is she doing in a strip club?   She’s good for nothing – she might as well get paid to sleep with men!” Ioan rages

"Don't talk about my sister like that!"

and Howard objects to him talking about his sister like that.

Ioan again points out that he has no idea of where she lives;  “She didn’t want me to know,

"I do know now, thanks to you!"

“but now I do, thanks to you!”   Howard warns him to keep away from Tegwen, with Mathew restraining him from getting physical and Ioan goes back inside the pub.

Gaynor is about to turn to the bottle . . .

Gaynor opens the fridge and takes out a bottle of wine, but then, uncharacteristically, replaces it.

. . . but decides on a cup of tea instead

As she turns on the kettle, there is a knock at the door and she discovers that it is Tom, with more flowers.

She looks accusingly . . .

She looks accusingly at him

. . . and he 'says it with flowers'

and he apologises profusely, holding out the flowers.

Eleri finds the magazines

Eleri finds the magazines exactly where her father said and Kath points out that there are hundreds of them around;

"I've never seen him reading any of them"

“Do you know what?   I’ve never seen him reading any of them.”

"This place is too small"

“This place is too small,” states Eleri, and Kath anticipates a repeat of what has gone before.   She continues, “No, it’s too small for the four of us.”

"Are you going to throw me out of my own pub?"

“What are you going to do then – throw me out of my own pub?” demands Kath.

"You can keep your pub, Kath . . .`'

“You can keep your pub, Kath – what I’m trying to say is . . . you were right – it won’t help to be at each other’s throats when Dad comes home.   Making sure that he recovers is the important thing now.”   Kath cannot but agree with this.

". . . I'm moving out!"

“So I’m moving out!” Eleri announces, which comes as somewhat of a shock to Kath.

"It's what's best for Dad – and us"

“I’ve decided – it’s what’s best for Dad – and us,” says Eleri, “Right, I need a drink – I’ll make the most of living over a pub while I’m here.”

Kath is dumbfounded

Kath cannot quite believe what has just happened.

"I'm so grateful to you, Gaynor!"

Tom says that he is so grateful to Gaynor;  “I’d still be out there now without your help!”   She enquires why he did not contact her to say he had received the money, and again he is sorry,

"I didn't have a way of getting in touch"

maintaining that he could not fly back until this morning because of work and he did not have a way of getting in touch.

"How about the phone at the hotel"

“You could have used the phone at the hotel,” she points out

"Oh, I should have thought of that"

and he admits that he should have thought of that.

“I’m sorry if you thought I’d run away with the money –

"Is that what you thought?"

“is that what you thought?”   Gaynor tries to deny it, and he continues, as convincingly as he can manage, “The first thing I did this morning was pay every penny back – if you want to check that it’s all there.   And I want to do something special to thank you properly.”

Gaynor insists that there is no need, but he asks if she is working tomorrow.   She answers that she is,

"We will have to do something about that"

so he suggests that they will have to  do something about that;

Things are looking up

Gaynor wonders what he is thinking of.

"How are we going to find her now?"

Mathew and Howard return to APD;  “How are we going to find her now?” Howard demands, “If Ioan hasn’t been hurting her, someone else has been!

"We have to find her, Math!"

“We have to find her, Math!”

"What right do you have to interfere in my life?"

Someone has followed them in;  “What right do you have to interfere in my life?” Tegwen shouts

They are in a state of shock

and they are absolutely astonished.

Cassie puts up a rugby club poster

Cassie puts up a poster about the rugby club on the hymn board which came from Bethania and asks Iolo if he fancies joining them.

"It will be Lleucu's first training session"

He confirms that he will be supporting them as that will be Lleucu’s first training session.

“Welcome back,” says Cassie, “Did you have fun?   A man in every port?

"Any holiday romances?"

“Did you have any holiday romances?   I want all the details – a handsome man like you.”

"Whisky – and not that cheap one!"

Eleri comes downstairs and orders a whisky on the rocks, “And not that cheap one.”

"She's still here, then"

Iolo remarks that she is still there.

Iolo meets Tom

Just then Gaynor comes in with Tom and introduces him to Iolo;

"Pleased to meet you"

There is a certain look of recognition between them and they shake hands.

"I've heard a lot about you"

“I’ve heard a lot about you,” says Iolo.

"Welcome to the Deri, Tom"

Cassie also welcomes Tom to the Deri

"How is your Dad?"

Rhys comes in and sits opposite Eleri, asking how her father is;

"Weak, but getting better"

“Weak, but getting better,” is the reply, “He’ll take a while to recover – he’s going to need me –

"It's a chance for you at Tomos ac Ellis"

“it’s a chance for you at Tomos ac Ellis.”

"What about all the hight-flyers?"

“A chance for me?” laughs Rhys, “What about all the high-flyers you have waiting in the wings?”

"I was trying to be motivating"

She maintains that she was simply trying to be motivating, commenting that pressure is needed to create diamonds.

"What Kath said – is it true?"

“What Kath said the other day – is it true?”asks Rhys

"I was the victim"

and is told that Eleri was the victim, not that she needs to justify that to anyone.

"I'm not sure I'm cu out for this"

“Cwmderi was meant to be a fresh start – and Tomos ac Ellis – but I’m not sure I’m cut out for this.”

"It took months to get Ioan out of our lives"

Tegwen continues castigating Mathew and Howard;  “It took months to get Ioan out of our lives – months!   And now, when things were settling down . . .”

"We were just worried about you"

Mathew stresses that they were just worried about her,

"Did you have to tell him where I worked?"

but she demands, “Did you have to tell him where I work?   He is going to contact his lawyer and use this to get Ken back!   Do you understand that?   I told you that night to keep your noses out!”

"We saw the bruises on your arm"

Mathew is very sorry, “But we saw the bruises on your arm, what he has done to you.”

"Have you ever danced on a pole, Math?"

“Have you danced on a pole, Mathew?   You’d get your share of bruises!” Tegwen exclaims.

“You wouldn’t work somewhere like that unless you were forced to,” insists Howard.

"It seemed fine for your night out!"

She wants to know what ‘sort of place’ that is;  “Because it seemed fine for your night out!”

"Is this what you want to do?"

Mathew cannot believe this is what she wants, but she asks him, “Do you remember what it was like in Cwmderi?   Working three jobs to scrape a living?

"I can make up to £1,000 a night!"

“Now I can make up to £1,000 pounds a night!”

"It's not right to do such a thing!"

“And what about Ken?   It’s not right for a mother to do such a thing,” protests Howard.   She answers that the plan was to save up to go to college,

"I guess I shall be paying a solicitor"

but now she guesses that she will have to pay for a solicitor instead.

"Have you got anyone else who can help you?"

“Have you got anyone else who can help?” asks Mathew

"No, I'm not seeing anyone"

and she angrily replies that she is not seeing anyone, if that is what he means.

"What man worth his salt would go out with a stripper?"

Howard simply sneers, “What man worth his salt would go out with a stripper?”

"I can't remember you having a successful love life!"

“I can’t remember you having a successful love life – actually I don’t remember you having a love life at all – or have I missed something?” she tells him, “Look at you!”

"We can help, if you want"

Mathew offers that they can help her if she wants, but she makes it very clear, “I don’t need your help, Mathew!   Go and find some other girl to save –

"No wonder I left you!"

“you’re the most needy and desperate person I know!   No wonder I left you – you suffocated me all the time!

"I don['need to be saved by any man!"

“I don’t need to be saved by any man, especially you two!”

Mathew and Howard have been put in their place

She turns round and storms out of APD, leaving Matthew well and truly humiliated.

"OK, you win"

In the Deri, Gaynor is trying to find out what this surprise is, but Tom will not tell her until she promises to come.   “OK, you win, I promise,” she replies.

"Have you been to Swansea lately?"

“Have you been to Swansea lately?” he asks;  she looks rather disillusioned.

"We can catch a train to London"

“Because there’s a railway station there, where we could catch a train to London – posh hotel, a fancy meal, whatever show you want to see –

"Everything you deserve!"

“everything you deserve!”

When Gaynor replies that there is no need for him to go to such lengths,

"I'll come with you if she refuses!"

Cassie intervenes;  “Don’t worry – I’ll come with you if she refuses!”

Eleri tells Rhys, “I really thought I could just pick it up,”

"It's a difficult field which takes years"

but Rhys replies that it is a difficult field which takes time – years;  he is still learning.

"A cruddy estate agents"

“I’ve run businesses with turnovers a hundred times higher – how did a cruddy estate agents in a rural village get the better of me?” she wonders.

"I was going to buy the 'cruddy estate agents'!"

“You do know I was going to buy the ‘cruddy estate agents’ when Griffiths was selling?” he enquires,

"I got in ahead of you?"

and she realises that she got in ahead of him.

"I can make it a success, with your help"

She proposes that she can make Tomos ac Ellis a success, with his help.   He gives her the unwelcome news that perhaps he does not want to ‘help’.

"I'll buy the place from you"

“I’ll buy the place from you,” he proposes, “I’ll pay the amount you paid originally.   It would be a chance for you to start again somewhere far more interesting than here.”

"What if I don't want to sell?"

She asks what if she does not want to sell,

"You'll be running it on your own . . ."

and he informs her, “Then you’ll be running Tomos ac Ellis on your own –

". . . because I resign!"

“because I resign!”   He gets up and walks out of the Deri, leaving her to make the decision.
