Griffiths has not got far through the diary |
That diary is so interesting that Griffiths has taken it to work with him,
he does not say much to Mathew |
but hastily puts it away when Mathew appears, apologising for being late. He finds that Griffiths is not very communicative and is looking at his phone;
"Sorry for accusing you of stealing the money" |
“Ieuan, we’re OK, aren’t we?” asks Mathew, “I’m sorry for accusing you of stealing the money.”
"I've got worse things to worry about" |
“I’ve got worse things to worry about than being called a thief,” Griffiths grumbles, “Right, now that you’re here, I’m going to get a coffee – I hate that instant stuff you drink!”
Mathew is concerned about his behaviour |
Mathew finds his behaviour rather strange.
"There shoes are hurting my feet" |
At Maes-y-Deri, Gaynor complains that her shoes are hurting her feet and that she has not worn them for years;
"Your feet have probably got bigger. . ." |
“Your feet have probably got bigger,” suggests Mark,
". . . that's what happens when you get older" |
“That’s what happens when you get older – your feet spread.”
"Tom still hasn't arrived" |
Cheryl is surprised that Tom has not yet arrived; “And the pub stops serving food at two o’clock,” Mark points out,
"The only reason I wanted to go was for the 'scran'!" |
“That’s the only reason I wanted to go for a walk was for the ‘scran’ [Scottish term meaning ‘grub’] and a pint afterwards.
Cheryl advises her sister to try him again, as he is almost an hour late and moans that her feet are already killing her. Once again Mark says that her feet are probably getting bigger.
"I hope everything's all right" |
“Hi, Tom, it’s Gaynor here – we’re still waiting for you. I hope everything’s all right – phone me?”
"It went straight to voicemail" |
She reports that it went straight to voicemail.
Siôn moves the chair . . . |
At Y Felin, Siôn moves a chair into the centre of the room,
. . . then poses in it . . . |
then sits on it in a variety of poses, attempting to look thoughtful –
. . . showing off his tattoo |
and ensuring to show his ‘Cofiwch Dryweryn’ tattoo.
He then takes up another position |
However he is not satisfied and instead goes to stand by the mantelpiece.
Cassie brings Griffiths his coffee in the Deri, just as Brynmor comes downstairs.
"Do you know anything about the land at Deri Fawr?" |
“Oh, Brynmor, I wanted to pick your brains – do you know anything about the land at Deri Fawr and who bought it? The council used to handle a lot of that.”
Brynmor cannot assist |
Brynmor says that he is unable to help and Griffiths goes on that so much has changed; “Everything’s online, not like in our day. There are still boxes of Mami’s files in the attic at home.”
"Your mother was very thorough with her work" |
Brynmor remembers that Ieuan’s mother was very thorough with her work and Griffiths continues, “You were good friends, weren’t you?”
"We had a lot of fun together" |
Brynmor agrees that they had a lot of fun together.
"Especially at the Christmas parties" |
“Especially at the Christmas parties,” Griffiths mutters, which seems to disconcert Brynmor. “I found a couple of photos the other day, that’s all,”
"They were good days" |
and Brynmor describes them as good days.
"How is Eleri getting on at Tomos ac Ellis?" |
Then the subject changes; “How is Eleri getting on at Tomos ac Ellis?” Brynmor answers that she is doing well,
"You weren't with her mother for very long" |
but Griffiths goes on with his questions, “You weren’t with her mother for very long, were you?”
"What do you mean?" |
Brynmor wonders what he is insinuating, so he apologises, “Sorry, I didn’t mean to be nosy or anything.”
Brynmor confirms that they were not together for very long and Griffiths comments that it is nice to have the opportunity to reconnect.
"I'm very glad to have Eleri back in my life" |
“I’m very glad to have Eleri back in my life,” says Brynmor, before he turns to talk to Cassie;
"How was it one the 'Western Front' this morning?" |
“How was it on the ‘Western Front’ this morning?”
“They both paid each other a compliment –
"We'll see what happens at lunch" |
“we’ll see what happens at lunch this afternoon,” says Cassie.
"We could throw some alcohol into the mix" |
Brynmor suggests that it might be a good idea to throw alcohol into the mix
"It would do me the world of good" |
and she sighs, “It would do me the world of good!”
Brynmor looks suspiciously at Griffiths |
Brynmor is still very concerned about what Griffiths was getting at; he turns to look suspiciously across at him.
There appears to be an artist at Y Felin |
When Siôn comes downstairs in his dressing gown, a visitor is setting up an easel; “Thank you very much for coming over to Cwmderi,” he tells her, “It’s a pleasure to meet you at last.” He is looking very nervous.
Eleri is speaking to a client |
At Tomos ac Ellis, Eleri is on the phone, “I am sorry, Mrs Saunders, but it’s not my fault that the buyer has changed his mind.”
Rhys comes in and listens |
Rhys comes in to hear the tail end of this conversation;
"Rhys should have kept you in the loop" |
“I know – Rhys should have kept you in the loop – it won’t happen again. If you stay with us, I’ll look after you personally.”
Then her voice turns more abrasive; “Well, there we are – it’s your decision! But, for your information, I’ve heard terrible things about Bradford West!” She slams down the phone.
"What were you saying about me?" |
“What were you saying about me?” Rhys demands, and Eleri says that it does not matter as the client has gone to someone else.
"Why haven't we had a single offer?" |
She also asks why Cysgod y Glyn has had twelve viewings and not a single offer.
"Don't change the subject!" |
“Don’t change the subject!” snaps Rhys, “Who were you talking to? The farmhouse outside Llanarthur?
"Seh's your client – why is she leaving" |
She’s your client – why is she leaving?”
"I'm the boss and you're on a trial period" |
Eleri would prefer to talk about Cysgod y Glyn and warns him, “Can I remind you that I’m the boss and that you’re on a trial period.”
"You have no idea how to run an estate agents!" |
“I think there’s been a misunderstanding – you’re the one on a trial period, because it’s obvious you have no idea how to run an estate agents!” Rhys informs her.
"I've handled millions of pounds!" |
“I’ve run businesses that handle millions of pounds!” she boasts.
"And now you're here!" |
He disparagingly points out, “And now you’re here!”
"I'm this close to sacking you!" |
And I’m this close to sacking you!” she threatens,
"Go on, then!" |
so he invites her to do so, confident that there are loads of high-fliers queueing up to work with her. This tends to take the wind out of her sails and she simply tells him, “I believe in being fair her and letting you finish your trial period before I decide what to do.”
Rhys simply walks away, telling her that he has viewings to do;
"We're asking too much" |
“Oh, and to answer your question about Cysgod y Glyn, we’re asking too much, I’ve told you that already.”
Eleri is furious |
She angrily sits down at the desk, having been humiliated.
Griffiths heads for Tomos ac Ellis . . |
When Griffiths comes out of the Deri, he notices Rhys striding away and goes across to Tomos ac Ellis.
. . . and peers inside |
He looks in, then enters the office;
"Are you looking for a job?" |
Eleri immediately asks if he is looking for a job.
"I'm having problems with Rhys" |
“I’m having problems with Rhys – he thinks he knows it all,” she snarls.
"He is good at selling houses" |
Griffiths tells her that Rhys is good at selling houses; “He may not have your strengths, but that doesn’t mean he’s not useful. You and I are quite similar, you know, in some ways.
"We're leaders, not followers" |
“We’re leaders, not followers – Rhys will be a salesman all his life, unlike you and me.
“The problem is, Ieuan, I have to do some of the salesman’s job myself – like putting the details of these houses on the website. Some of them are so horrible, I can’t think of anything nice to say.”
"Give the facts in a positive way" |
He suggests that she does not have to be nice, but just give the facts in a positive way. “How do you describe this one then? A disgusting house that should be knocked down!” she growls.
"Do you want to move over?" |
He invites her to move over so that he can show her how to do it and she is pleased to do so. As he taps away at the keyboard, she asks, “Are you sure I can’t persuade you to come and work here?
She remarks on his Egyptian cotton shirt |
“The Egyptian cotton deserves better than being hidden under a polyester fleece.”
"I've got other plans" |
“No, don’t worry – I’m not going to be at APD for ever – I’ve got other plans,” Ieuan tells her.
"I'm gutted we were too late to have lunch at that other pub" |
In the Deri, as Mark brings over the drinks, he moans, “I’m gutted we were too late to have lunch in that pub.”
"The Deri is cheaper" |
Cheryl says that it does not matter, as the food in the Deri is nice – and cheaper.
“But they had scotch egg sandwiches – that bloke was eating one outside,” he continues.
Gaynor answers an unrecognised number |
Gaynor’s phone rings, but she does not recognise the number, so Cheryl suspects that it is a cold caller, advising not to answer it, but nevertheless, Gaynor does.
“Oh, Tom! Thank heavens – we’ve been so worried! What? Spain?”
"You're in Spain?" |
She walks away to take the call and Mark wonders what he is doing in Spain.
"He could have told her earlier" |
“Whatever it is, he could have told her earlier, couldn’t he?” Cheryl snarls.
"Well, ready or not - off we go!" |
Siôn has been relaxing in the chair, but now decides, “Well, ready or not – off we go!”
Siôn is about to remove his clothes . . . |
The artist, or whatever she is, also begins to disrobe, but before anything further has a chance to happen, the door opens
. . . when they are interrupted |
and he discovers that Iolo and Greta are back from their travels.
"Dad?" |
“Dad!” exclaims Iolo and puts his hand over Greta’s eyes to shield her from the sight.
He was not expecting that |
Siôn is somewhat disconcerted.
"He's had to go to Marbella . . ." |
Gaynor comes back to inform the others, “He’s had to go to Marbella – something to do with his work – and he’s been mugged! I’m not sure whether he is all right –
". . . and been robbed of wallet, watch and phone" |
“two men with knives took his wallet, his watch and his phone. He is with the police now – but his Spanish isn’t great and they don’t speak English.”
"They usually speak a lot of English in Marbella" |
Mark points out that they usually speak a lot of English in Marbella and Cheryl asks whose phone he is using now. Gaynor assumes that it is one in the police station, then she reads a text she has just received. “He wants me to send him some money.”
"Why can't he phone his bank?" |
Cheryl wonders why he cannot phone his bank and is told that he has cancelled his cards, so he has no way of getting money out of the bank.
Cheryl is understandably getting increasingly suspicious of this, especially when she is told,
"He's asking for £1,000" |
“He wants me to transfer the money to the hotel’s account and they will sort things out for him – he’s asking for £1,000, just enough to cover him until he gets home.”
"Sounds completely dodgy to me!" |
“Gaynor, it sounds completely dodgy to me,” her sister warns, but Gaynor insists that she cannot refuse.
"What kind of relationship will we have afterwards?" |
“What kind of relationship will we have afterwards if I refuse?”
"If he's genuine, he will understand . . ." |
Cheryl maintains that if he is genuine he will understand –
". . . and if he's not . . .well . . ." |
if he is not . . . well . . .
"I learned to ride a motorbike" |
At the bar in the Deri, Brynmor tells Kath, “The most challenging thing I’ve done in my life is learn to ride a motorbike!” As they are talking like motorbikes,
"I did the 'wall of death' at a fair once" |
Cassie recalls that she did the ‘wall of death’ at a fair once – but she was stupid and in love; it did not last.
"You seem to be having fun|" (at least until she turned up) |
Eleri comes in and remarks that they appear to be having fun; she asks Cassie for, “A Pinot, chilled, but not too chilled.”
"The most challenging thing we've done" |
Her father tells her they are talking about the most challenging thing they have done
"Working with Rhys – top of the list" |
and she immediately declares, “Working with Rhys – top of the list! Thank heavens for Ieuan Griffiths – he called at the office and sorted everything for me. He was with me for hours – he’s either bored or in love with me.”
"Probably bored!" |
Brynmor is looking troubled, as Kath concludes that Ieuan is probably bored. Eleri queries whether her drink is actually Pinot and Kath confirms that it is the most expensive one they have;
"I know because I chose it" |
“I know because I chose it.”
Brynmor reprimands his daughter, “I don’t know where your manners are sometimes.”
Then she catches sight of Rhys coming into the pub
"Oh, that's all I need!" |
and groans, “Oh, that’s all I need!”
"Can I have a pint, please?" |
Cassie thinks that they had better eat to soak up the alcohol and Rhys asks for a pint.
The artist and her canvas leave Y Felin |
The artist has packed up her equipment and Siôn apologises profusely to her, but hopes that perhaps there may be another time.
"I wanted to be happy win my skin" |
As he closes the door after her Iolo comes downstairs and is told, “As part of the bucket list, I wanted to be happy in my skin.”
"Lleucu told me about the tattoo" |
“Lleucu told me about the tattoo – wasn’t that enough?” demands Iolo,
"And I've bought a bike" |
and is told that his father has also bought a bike, on which he has enjoyed cycling around the place for the past few days.
"And I thought standing here naked . . ." |
“And I thought that perhaps standing here naked in front of a stranger would . . . well, crown the journey of being comfortable.”
"Well, if that's what you want to do . . ." |
Iolo shakes his head incredulously; “Well, if that’s what you want to do, don’t let me stop you.”
Siôn thinks that the fact he arrived home today like he did was perhaps a sign that it was not meant to be.
Iolo simply laughs; “Dad, it’s hilarious – you, of all people!”
"Why are you laughing?" |
Greta comes downstairs and asks why her father is laughing. “I was just telling Tad-cu how much fun that we had on holiday.”
Siôn asks Greta if she likes all the work they have had done on the house
"I've got a present for you" |
and she says she has a present for him.
"You'd better go and unpack first" |
Iolo thinks that it would be better if they unpacked first, so she returns upstairs.
"How did the journey go?" |
Siôn asks his son how the journey went and is told that he had a great time,
“I’m so glad Greta was there to experience the place with me – and I was all right about returning here –
"Well, I was before I walked in!" |
“well, I was before I walked in!”
“Why didn’t you phone to say you were coming home?” Siôn demands. Iolo replies that Greta wanted to surprise Tad-cu.
"Tad-cu was the one who surprised us!" |
“But there we are – Tad-cu was the one who surprised us!”
Gaynor has another call; |
Gaynor is pouring herself a glass of red wine when her phone sounds again and, after a moment’s thought, she answers it.
"How are things with you?" |
“Hello – I’m fine – how are things with you? Oh, no – that sounds awful.
"I'll transfer it after this call" |
“No, sorry, I haven’t done it yet – yes, I miss you, too. Listen, I’m going to transfer the money after this call, all right? It’s fine – no problem at all – ta-ra.”
It looks as if Gaynor is having doubts |
She still appears to be undecided.
"Decided to take the rest of the day off, did you?" |
At the bar Eleri turns to Rhys and demands, “Well, what happened to you, then? You decided to take the rest of the day off, did you?”
"You haven't noticed we've got four new houses on our books?" |
He smiles as he replies, “I did some viewings and uploaded the details on to the website – haven’t you noticed we’ve got four new houses on our books?”
“Why didn’t you come back to the office to do the work?” she snarls,
"I don't pay bills so you can work from home!" |
“I don’t pay the bills and tax so you can work from home!” He explains that he did a lot of work in the car after the viewings, but she complains, “I had other things I wanted you to do!”
"Like what?" |
He calls her bluff; “Like what?” and she lists phone calls and talking to customers. “Phone calls?” he laughs, “Are are you serious? Is that the best you can do?
"You haven't got a clue!" |
“You haven’t got a clue! That place will go to the wall if you carry on like this!”
"It's important that you run the place properly" |
Kath has been listening and adds her ‘four-penn’orth’, “Oh, Eleri – it’s important that you run the place properly.” She responds that she knows what she is doing,
"There won't be any more handouts" |
but Kath goes on, “I hope so, because there won’t be any more handouts!”
“You’re not going to let this go, are you?” shouts Eleri,
"You probably want me to fail!" |
“You probably want me to fail!” Kath tells her not to talk nonsense. This is too much for Brynmor, who is about to walk away,
"I can't stand this!" |
informing them that he is going out, as he cannot stand this.
Rhys sniggers into his glass |
Kath assures him that she will not say any more and this is echoed by Eleri; meanwhile Reese can be seen, laughing into his pint
"Where have you been all day?" |
At APD, Mathew asks Griffiths where he has been all day and the reply is that there has been a family emergency;
"My sister was having trouble at work" |
“My sister was having trouble at work and needed my help.” Mathew did not realise that he had a sister in the area; “There’s a lot you don’t know about me – I’ve been offered some consultancy work in Flintshire.”
"And what about here?" |
“And what about here?” enquires Mathew. Griffiths hoped that he would understand and insists it will only be for a few weeks.
"I don't intend to be a cashier here for ever" |
“You do know that I don’t intend to be a cashier here for ever?” he adds,
"There's something strange going on here" |
but Mathew senses something is wrong. Griffiths denies this and leaves APD.
"How about that little word beginning with 'P'?" |
As they sit down for their meal in the Deri, Eleri will go for the Greek salad and will try the Sauvignon Blanc. Kath mentions to her that there is a little word that starts with ‘P’. “Show some manners – like everyone has to remind you.”
"Is that what they taught you at finishing school?" |
“Is that what they taught you at finishing school in Switzerland?” Eleri sneers
"Stop, will you?" |
and her father urges them to stop. “All I’m trying to do is stick up for myself,” she goes on.
"Let her think that she's better than me" |
Kath tells him, “It’s all right, Brynmor – let her think that she’s better than me.”
"Half of your family are convicts!" |
Not to be outdone, Eleri says, “I think he could have done better – half of your family are convicts!” Nothing that Brynmor can say will stop this altercation, as Eleri lists, “Your husband, Buff or Dyff or something – Mark with drugs, wasn’t it? And you haven’t been an angel, from what I’ve heard!”
Kath is getting roused |
Kath stands up and it appears that this may be leading to fisticuffs;
"You almost ended up in Rikers Island yourself, good girl!" |
“You almost ended up in Rikers Island yourself, good girl!
"You didn't know that, did you, Rhys?" |
“You didn’t know that, Rhys, did you?
"For stealing money!" |
“She almost went to prison for stealing money – she would have if Brynmor hadn’t paid for top-class lawyers!”
"Shut up, Kath!" |
Eleri shouts at her to shut up. Kath yells, “What are you going to do about it?”
It appears that Brynmor is having a heart attack . . . |
Brynmor who has been looking increasingly unwell, starts groaning with pain
. . . so Cassie calls for an ambulance . . . |
and Cassie calls for an ambulance,
. . . while Kath and Eleri try to comfort him |
while both Eleri and Kath try to comfort him.
