Dani is sorting baby clothes

Mark is assisting Dani as she sorts the baby clothes into different ages;  “I’ve got to wash them all,” she complains, and Mark does not think that one of Seren’s dresses will suit the new baby.   She informs him that they are going to Apêl Maenan.

"Have you decided on a name yet?"

He wonders if she has decided on a name yet, but she has not had a chance to think;  “I like Caleb,” he tells her,

"I think I should scrap the list"

and she thinks that she should scrap the list and wait until she meets him, and sees what suits him.

This is bad news for his sweepstake

This troubles Mark, who is worried about his sweepstake;  “If you’re not careful, you’ll end up calling him ‘Hoy’.”

Aled also wants to help

Aled arrives and offers to help, so she instructs him to put a pile of washing in the machine.   When she leaves the room,

"Remember the surprise party"

Aled reminds Mark about the surprise party for Dani’s birthday, which is today,

"Oh – I'd forgotten that!"

but he had completely forgotten.

Downstairs at the bar, Garry comes in, having received a message from Cassie;

"I've got stuff to do!"

“What’s wrong?” he moans, “I’ve got stuff to do!”

"The brewery van hasn't arrived"

and she points out that the brewery van has not arrived.

"What do I pay you for?"

“What do I pay you for?” he growls, “To sort this stuff out.”

"They will only talk to you"

She advises him that it is something to do with the account and they will only talk to him.   “We’re short on white wine and there’s only one barrel,” she goes on, and he irritably promises to deal with the matter.

"I know exactly how you're feeling"

Gaynor is sitting quietly with her cup of tea and tells Hywel that she really appreciates what he is doing;  “I know exactly how you’re feeling,” he sympathises.

"Everyone hates me, Hywel"

She is quite sure that everyone hates her, but he protests that is not true.

She continues, “I’ve lost Izzy, and I barely know Lois – and I’m about to lose a job I’ve loved for years.

"I even managed to upset Colin"

“And I’ve even managed to upset Colin!”   She will not go into details, but merely explains that it was the same old things.   Hywel reminds her that it is difficult for everyone at the moment, and that Colin will forget about it.

"This is the ideal place!"

Kelly and Mickey walk into the Deri, and she has the idea that the pub would be the ideal place to have a toy bank;

"Isn't it a bit too public?"

he comments that it is rather public, and she realises that it is not such a good idea.   “Somewhere more discreet – I’ve learned something today,

"You can have a bag of pork scratchings for that!"

you can have a packet of pork scratchings for that!” she tells him, as Cassie is listening.

Kelly gives Cassie her order

Mickey goes to sit down and Kelly approaches the bar;  she asks for two packets of pork scratchings and two G&Ts.

There appears to be a paper missing

At number 7, Garry is becoming increasingly angry as he is looking for a particular item of paperwork;  Britt comes in through the back door, carrying something, and he grunts,

"Don't say you're bringing food parcels now?"

“Don’t say you’re bringing food parcels now?”   She replies that they have so much stuff in the freezer, and that people have been very kind since Izzy died.

"I know you're in debt – but how much debt?"

“Right,” she continues, “How’s it going, then?   I know you’re in debt, Gar, but how much debt?   You must have some idea – come on, Garry!”

"Thousands upon thousands!"

He replies, “Thousands upon thousands – all right?   It’s been a difficult year, with the pandemic – and the divorce!”

"Explain to Dani, then"

She advises him to tell Dani what is going on – to explain that he does not have any more money, but he refuses to do so.   “She’d love to know what a mess I’m in!”

Britt demands what he is going to do, and he rather vaguely answers that he will sort it.   “How?   Sell a kidney?” she asks,

"I'm sure I shall think of something"

and he is sure that he will think of something, but does not look optimistic.

Tesni is sitting outside the Deri and has been given some news by Griffiths;  “From London?” she exclaims,

"His work is excellent"

and Griffiths replies that his work is excellent, and that the other woman pulled out.

"And there was no-one local available?"

She cannot believe that there was no-one local available, and points out that artists have suffered terribly.   “This commission would have helped someone!”

"It's the statue which is important"

He argues that it is the statue which is important, not the person who created it;  “That’s what will benefit local businesses.”   Tesni is quite adamant that someone local should get the commission.

Tesni shouts for Jinx's opinion

She happens to see Jinx walking past and shouts to him, “What do you think about the council commissioning someone from London to make the ‘Fflam’ statue?”

"The council will have their reasons"

He suspects that the council will have their reasons, and she is more of the opinion, “It will have something to do with envelopes stuffed with £20 notes!”

"Don't throw accusations around"

Griffiths does not like her throwing such accusations around,

"Was it a fair process?"

so she demands how they chose the person, and whether it was a fair process.   He is lost for an answer, merely waffling that it should be something nice for the village and nothing political.   “Everything is political – and it’s not right!” she declares, “I’m sure that the Western Post will be interested,” as she takes out her phone.

"Yes, I see your point"

Griffiths realises he is beaten and accepts her point;  he will see what he can do.

They appear to be getting on 'like a house on fire'

Inside the Deri, Kelly and Mickey are laughing;  they are viewed with smouldering anger by Cassie.

Jason comes in . . .

Jason comes in and Kelly tells him that Mickey is a genius;  “What you’re doing is important,” and he can see no reason why it would not work in Cwmderi.

. . . to discuss construction matters

Mickey wants a word with Jason about the job in Cross Hands, so Kelly will go and order another round.

"You seem to be getting on well with Mickey"

When she gets to the bar, Cassie comments, “You seem to be getting on well with Mickey.”   Kelly replies that he has some good ideas for a gift bank,

"Don't think I'm interfering, but . . ."

and is told, “Don’t think that I’m interfering, but do you think you’re doing the right thing, spending so much time with Mickey?   Anita clearly doesn’t want him in her life.”

"It's nothing to do with Anita"

“The gift bank is nothing to do with Anita,” Kelly begins,

"She's not going to be happy"

but Cassie points that if he is going to be around, she will not be happy.   “Do you know what?   I don’t know what your problem is because he's lovely, actually,” Kelly protests,

"She'll have to put her big girl pants on and lump it!"

“I like him – so Anita has to put on her big girl pants and lump it – OK?   Two G&Ts and a pint, ta, Cas!”

"Why do you want my scarf, Mark?"

Dani is puzzled;  “I’ve heard a lot of weird things, but why do you want my scarf?” she asks Mark,

"Aled forgot a blindfold"

and he replies that Aled forgot a blindfold.   “Is he kinky?” she wonders, and he points out that it is in fact for her.

"I'm not kinky – my name's not Meinir!"

“Look at me, Mark – I’m not kinky – my name’s not Meinir!” she squeals, “I’m not worried, unless you’re hiding a Postman Pat outfit.

"What's going on, Mark?"

“What’s going on?”

"If I tell you, Aled will kill me!"

He does not want to tell her, or Aled will kill him;  she offers him the ultimatum,

"If you don't, I'll kill you!"

“If you don’t tell me, I’ll kill you!   And the shock could make the baby pop out – you don’t want that!”

He begs her, “Please don’t show that you know anything – Aled has organised a  surprise downstairs because it’s a special day.”

"So this is a little birthday bash"

She realises that this is a little birthday bash, and considers it is really sweet.   He stresses that after this year the baby will get all the attention, but is very worried that she will let on that she knows, and Aled will be gutted.

"You can pretend it's a massive surprise"

“Put that blindfold on, I’ll take you to the bar, and you can pretend it’s a massive surprise,” he says, and she is sure that she could manage that,

She practises her astonished exclamations

practising her astonished look there and then.   He is about to put on her blindfold.

"I don't know what else I can do to help you"

Hywel visits Penrhewl, where Eileen is busy packing boxes;  “If this is about Gaynor again, I don’t know what else I can do to help you,” she tells him.

"Plans that will need approval from the council"

“I heard that you were thinking of opening a café here,” he remarks, “You’ve got a lot of plans – plans that will need approval from the council.   You’ll need the council’s approval to get the café on its feet.   Now, I want you to forget about that inquiry – and not just postpone it.   I want Gaynor  to retire with some self-respect.”

"I think that's known as blackmail"

Eileen thinks that is known as blackmail, and he concedes that she can call it whatever she likes;

"I've become friends with the planning officer"

“The truth is, I’ve become friends with the planning officer lately.   I’m not threatening you – but Gaynor has been through too much and I don’t want anyone to make things worse.

"It's your choice, Eileen"

“It’s your choice.”

Eileen is very irate

He walks out of the farmhouse, leaving Eileen seething with anger.

"Right, take off the blindfold, Dan"

In the Deri, Dani is instructed to take off the blindfold

She is suitably surprised

and feigns surprise, as instructed;

"How old are you, Dani?"

Cassie enquires as to Dani’s age,

"Old enough to know better . . ."

and Mark replies, “Old enough to know better, but young enough to do it, anyway.”

"I haven't eaten for two hours!"

Dani sits awkwardly on one of the bar stools and wants some cake;  “I’m pregnant and I haven’t eaten for two hours!”

Kelly breezes into the shop

Kelly comes into the shop and finds Jinx there;

"Colin's out the back, getting me a copy of Golwg"

“Colin’s out the back, getting me a copy of Golwg,” [sight, view or vision] he says,

"I'm setting up a toy – gift – bank"

and she tells him that she is excited, as she is helping to set up a toy bank – a gift bank –  in the village.

“Sort of like a food bank, but toys – gifts for children,” she goes on, and he says that is amazing;

"There's bound to be loads of demand"

he is certain that there will be loads of demand.

"You can help, if you like"

“You can help if you like – I always need an extra pair of hands,” she simpers, and he is happy to help.   He asks her to let him know what she wants him to do.

Then, realising Colin has been gone a long time, he shouts, “Are you printing that copy of Golwg, or what?”   Kelly will come back later, but there is no mistaking the spark between them as she smiles it is nice to see him again.

"Did you have stitches with Seren?"

Cassie asks if Dani had stitches with Seren;  she agrees that she did, and was in so much pain.

"Hey, I'm eating a sausage roll!"

Mark protests that it is putting him off his sausage roll.

“You don't know how lucky you are,” Dani tells him,

". . . if they had to go through what we do"

and Cassie predicts that humanity would have ended if men had to go through what they go through.   Dani has never felt pain like that before;  “And the sweating, the screaming – and the blood!”

"Save me, Aled!"

Mark pleads with Aled, who has just come in, to save him.

"I can't wait to meet my little brother"

Aled proposes a toast to the birthday girl;  “And I can’t wait to meet my little brother.   “Although the father isn’t around, he’s really lucky to have a mother like Dani, who will be a mother, father and anything else she needs to be.”

Dani cries out and worries them

Suddenly, Dani gasps as if in pain, which causes all the others some distress,

"Gotcha!"

but then she laughs, “Gotcha!”   They all three look offended.

Gaynor looks at photos of Izzy

Gaynor is lying on the sofa, looking at photographs of Izzy, when Hywel comes back;

Hywel returns, allegedly from the shop

he went out while she was asleep, and says, “You haven’t been sleeping well, and I only went to the shop.”

"I've been dreaming about Izzy"

Gaynor has been dreaming about Izzy, and he recalls that he did that after losing Sheryl.

"It can be comforting"

“It can be comforting,” he adds, but is told that in the dream Izzy was angry with her mother, and then she woke up.

"It will get better"

“I know that things are difficult at the moment, but it will get better – you have to believe me,” he explains, “Why don’t we have a takeaway tonight and watch a film?”   She knows that he is trying, but she does not want to.

Unpaid bills are scattered all over the place . . .

Garry is at the end of his tether as he speaks on the phone;  “Come on, Rhodri, I’ve been a good client – asking for an extension on the overdraft for a few months – six months max – isn’t asking much, is it?”

. . . and Garry is running out of options

However his attempt is unsuccessful and he is at a loss to know what to do next.

Griffiths has news about the statue

At Cysgod y Glyn, Jinx has a visitor in the form of Griffiths;  “I’ve got some news for you about the statue,” he says,

"That's nothing to do with me"

and Jinx replies that it is nothing to do with him.   “Well, if you happen to see Siôn, Tesni, or anyone else, just tell them that Ieuan Griffiths has ensured that a local artist has got the commission.”

"I don't understand why you're telling me"

Jinx is sure that they will be very happy to hear that, but he still does not understand why Griffiths is telling him.

"It's you – you're the local artist!"

“Because it’s you – you’re the local artist – congratulations!”

"I didn't apply"

Jinx points out that he did not even apply, but is told that he has a track record of creating local art – the mural, for instance – and he lives in the village.

"You can't get more local than that"

“You can’t get more local than that.   Listen, you’re a local guy, everyone likes you –

"I could do with some goodwill in the village"

“and I could do with some goodwill in the village.   A few brownie points from the interim headteacher wouldn’t be a bad thing either,” he goes on as he backs towards the door.

"The office will be in touch"

“The office will be in touch about funding – bye.”

Jinx is perplexed

Jinx is left looking bemused.

Britt approaches Dani

Dani, complete with her ‘birthday’ sash, sits down outside the Deri for some fresh air.   Britt approaches from the chippy flat and wishes her happy birthday.

"Impromptu birthday bash"

“Mark and Aled threw an impromptu birthday bash,” Dani says, but Britt wants to talk about the divorce.   “No, not now!” she insists,

"Cut Garry some slack, Dani"

but Britt would like her to cut Garry some slack.

Dani is of the opinion that Garry has had too much slack over the years, but is urged to be reasonable.

"Being unreasonable, am I?"

“So I’m being unreasonable now, am I?” she demands, “I won’t let the children suffer because Garry’s too stingy to pay his way.   He had the affair – he ruined everything – you can tell him to put his hand in his pocket.”

“Garry doesn’t know I’m talking to you,” Britt assures her, but is accused of being a soft touch when it comes to Garry.

"You always stick up for him, whatever he does"

“Always have been – always sticking up for him, no matter what he does.   I deserve every penny I get – think of it as compensation for having to live with someone like that for so long.”

"How's the court case against your drug dealer boyfriend?"

Britt reminds her, “You’re no angel, Dani – how’s the court case against your drug dealer boyfriend?”

"I'm a single mother – and that's not cheap"

Dani now maintains that she is not with Dylan, but will be a single mother, which is not cheap.

"You should be grateful to Garry"

“You’ve had enough from Garry over the years – the cars, a roof over your head, the businesses – you should be grateful to him!” snarls Britt.

"Wow – I've heard everything now!"

“Wow – I’ve heard everything now!” shouts Dani, just as Vicky is passing, and snarls at her, “If you’ve got something to say, say it!”

"Screaming on the street like a fishwife!"

Vicky exclaims, “I thought you had found your level, screaming on the street like a fishwife!”

"This is a private conversation"

Dani does not appreciate her interrupting their private conversation,

"Like you stuck your nose into my relationship with Mathew?"

but is told, “Like you stuck your nose into my relationship with Mathew?”

Dani points out that was years ago, and tells her to grow up;  she puts the blame squarely on Mathew, but Vicky does not agree.

"No wonder he had a fling!"

“No wonder he had a fling!” Dani growls.

Mark reminds Vicky that Dani is pregnant;  “Yes, expecting the local drug dealer’s brat!” she snaps, “You think you’re successful, but it’s down to the men you’ve had!   I think there’s a word for that.”

"Just because you worked in London . . ."

Dani counters with, “Just because you worked in London, you think you’re better than anyone else.   I’ve got news for you, Vicky – you’re not – you’re as common as you always have been.”

"You're a slapper!"

Vicky calls her, “A slapper!”

"Ooh – my waters have broken!"

and suddenly Dani realises that her waters have broken.
