Eileen is on the receiving end of a tirade from Hywel |
Hywel has come to Penrhewl and is raging at Eileen, “They can force Gaynor to go before the panel now – it’s disgraceful!”
"I don't know why they sent that letter" |
Eileen, in her position as chair of the governors apologises to him and does not know why they sent out this letter; she assures him that she will sort the matter out, and will get back to him as soon as possible.
"Sorry I raised my voice, Eileen" |
He is sorry that he raised his voice, but Eileen says she would have done the same in the circumstances, then immediately gets her phone and is about to make a call when DJ walks in.
"I hope Hywel didn't see you!" |
She is very anxious that Hywel might have seen him, but he assures her he has been hiding; “I saw Sioned leave as well,” he tells her,
"I have to tell her how I feel" |
“I have to tell her how I feel.” Eileen replies that it is not a good idea, but he complains, “I can’t live in that caravan for ever!”
Eileen explains to him that timing is everything; “I’m losing my mind,” he goes on, “I have to know one way or the other!”
"I'll have a word with Sioned first" |
She suggests that she will have a word with Sioned first, to see which way the wind is blowing,
"Today is the last chance" |
and he reluctantly agrees, adding, “But I can’t linger around here for ever – today is the last chance.”
Then Eileen returns to her phone call |
Then Eileen resumes making her phone call.
"It's a TENS machine" |
In the Deri, Dani has a small box; “I only ordered this yesterday after talking to Meinir,” she tells Mark, “It’s a ‘TENS machine’ to manage birthing pains.”
"How does a Thames machine help?" |
He wonders how a ‘Thames’ machine helps, and she laughs, “Not the river, Mark –
She remembers what the initials stand for . . . |
“TENS – Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation!” He says that it sounds like something from Doctor Who.
. . . then she blinds him with science |
“You stick these pads on your back and the electricity helps your body release endorphins – you can use it after the birth if you have an episiotomy or if you tear.”
"Too much information, thank you, Dani!" |
Aled, behind the bar, protests, “No – too much information, thank you!” and she describes him as a wimp as she goes upstairs; Mark warns her to watch out for those Daleks.
Mark is going to continue on his post round,
"I'm organising a surprise party" |
but Aled informs him that it is Dani’s birthday soon, and he is organising a surprise party.
"I hope she enjoys it more than the paddling pool" |
“I hope she enjoys it more than the paddling pool yesterday,” comments Mark.
"Just drinks and a buffet" |
It will be nothing fancy but just a few friends having drinks and a buffet.
"Jaclyn could do it for you" |
Mark makes the suggestion that Jaclyn could do it for him, but is reminded about the affair.
"If she hadn't, you wouldn't have a brother on the way" |
“Yes, but mind you, if she hadn’t destroyed the marriage, you wouldn’t have a brother on the way,” says Mark.
"And she's made a short list of names" |
Aled mentions that Dani has already made a shortlist of names for the baby; “But I can’t tell you.”
"Come on – I won't tell anyone" |
However, after some persuasion from Mark,
Aled divulges the names |
he reveals that it includes, “Tommy, Caleb, Hendrix – you know, Jimmy – Llwyd and Dylan Junior.”
“If I had my way, I’d go for Caleb,” Mark decides,
"Caleb – butty boy – on the telly" |
“Butty Boy – on the telly!” Aled looks at him blankly, so he goes off on his round.
Hywel is glad the matter has been dealt with |
Eileen has gone to Llwyncelyn to advise Hywel that everything has been sorted, until Gaynor feels strong enough to defend herself.
"Talking about me, were you?" |
At that moment she walks in, and assumes that they have been talking about her.
“As Eileen has sorted things out, you might as well know – there’s a letter there from the council asking you to appear before the governors,” Hywel explains, but Eileen points out that it has been postponed until she feels stronger.
"I don't care about that" |
“Why is it is important?” wonders Gaynor, and he points out that her future is at stake. “I don’t care about that,” she adds,
"You'll feel differently later" |
but Eileen is sure that she will feel differently when she gets her strength back.
"I'm not sure if I ever want to go back" |
“I’m not sure if I ever want to go back – I’m serious,” she advises them, and she walks out of the room.
"Mam's put in the money for the divorce" |
At Maes-y-Deri, Vicky asks Mark if he has checked his bank account today; “Mam’s put the money in for the divorce.” He is more interested in working out which name Dani will choose for the baby, and reels off the list of names given to him by Aled.
Mark considers opening a sweepstake |
“I thought it would be fun to open a sweepstake,” he continues, despite promising Aled that he would not breathe a word.
"You haven't answered my question" |
Vicky is angry that he has not replied to her question, and he abruptly says, “She’ll get the money back – I like the name Caleb.”
"Are you doing this because you want her back" |
“Mam has moved on, Mark – you should, too,” Vicky recommends, “Are you doing this because you want her back? Have you forgiven her for everything?”
"I'm not going to divorce Debbie" |
He is quite determined that he is not going to divorce Debbie.
“Why do you want to be with someone who wants to marry someone else –
"She doesn't give a damn about you" |
“and who doesn’t give a damn about you?” she demands, but Mark simply gets up and walks out of the room.
"The day will come . . ." |
Later, at Llwyncelyn, Hywel says, “The day will come when you will be glad to have a reason to get up in the morning and have a job to go to. I don’t want to see you throw everything away – “
"This is grief, Gaynor" |
“this is the grief, Gaynor, I know that from experience.”
She appears to be otherwise engaged . . . |
She appears to be ignoring him and looking at the sympathy cards, then she decides she wants to go for a walk –
. . . then decides she is going for a walk, alone |
and would rather be on her own.
"There's no point hassling her, |
Rhys, who has been sitting silently until now, tells his father, “There’s no point hassling her – wait until she is ready to listen.”
"I'm worried that she's being rash" |
Hywel is worried that she is being rash, but is advised, “She needs to deal with everything – you can’t rush that process. Be patient with her like you were with me when I was ill –
"She'll talk to you when she's ready" |
“she’ll talk to you when she’s ready. Anyway she still might not want to go back to school, even after getting better – and that’s OK – people’s perspective can change.”
"How are we supposed to live then?" |
“And how are we supposed to live then?” Hywel demands; now Rhys appreciates that he is not just worried about Gaynor’s future, but is thinking about her income.
"Don't you have any shame?" |
“Don’t you have any shame?” he asks, and walks out of the house.
"Cledwyn heard we were opening a café" |
Sioned tell her mother, “Cledwyn Huw heard we were opening a café – he saw an opportunity.”
Eileen in enjoying sampling the wares |
He appears to have supplied them with a sample case of cans and also some bottles, labelled with words such as ‘Cwtch’.
"Do you fancy joining one of those dating apps?" |
Eileen seizes the opportunity to mention, “I heard that he joined a dating app after Lynwen left him – do you fancy joining one of those?”
"And end up with some idiot like Cledwyn Huw?" |
Sioned does not relish the thought of some idiot like Cledwyn Huw waiting for her.
"You may still have feelings for DJ" |
Her mother suggests that she may not be ready yet – she may still have DJ on her mind. “I’m trying not to think about DJ,” is the reply, which Eileen takes to indicate that she still has feelings for him.
DJ has sneaked in through the front door . . . |
We see that DJ has just crept silently in through the front door
. . . and listens in |
and is listening to their conversation;
"I just can't turn my feelings off" |
“I can’t just turn my feelings off,” says Sioned and her mother predicts that it will be a while before she gets over it, especially as they both suited each other so perfectly.
"It made me love him even more" |
Sioned agrees with that evaluation; “The fact that so many people were surprised we were a couple just made me love him even more.”
DJ finds this promising news |
The eavesdropping DJ finds this encouraging,
"Until Non came back, of course!" |
as Sioned continues, “I don’t think any man will understand me the way DJ did – or love me, either – until Non came back, of course!”
"What if he said he'd made the biggest mistake of his life?" |
“What if he came back here now – and said he’d made the biggest mistake of his life?” her mother hypothesises,
"He wouldn't do that" |
but Sioned is certain that he would not do that. “If he did – could you take him back? Would you?” Eileen adds.
"No! I hate him, Mam!" |
“No!” is Sioned’s firm answer, “I hate him, Mam – I do, because he made me feel safe, pretended to be different to other men – and then broke my heart!”
DJ is peering around the edge of the door to witness this declaration,
"I never want to see him again – or hear his name!" |
as Sioned goes on, “I never want to see him again – or hear his name! It’s not extreme, Mam – it’s the way I feel. Why are we discussing this anyway?
"I don't want to waste a second discussing that pig!" |
“I don’t want to waste another second discussing that pig!”
She looks at the word on her can |
She picks up the can in front of her, which reads ‘Cariad’ [love], and looks disparagingly at it. DJ fears that all hope is now gone.
"Rhys – before you go . . ." |
Rhys is on his way out to the gym when his father stops him; “I think you misunderstood me earlier – I do care about Gaynor – she’s my priority.
"I have living costs" |
“But the truth is, I have other priorities, like living costs.”
"Everyone has living costs" |
Rhys replies that everyone has living costs, and the gym is not doing too special.
“But nobody depends upon you,” his father points out,
"I have Esther to worry about" |
“I have Esther to worry about – she’s just a little girl. We have years of raising her ahead of us – can you imagine how expensive sending her to university will be? Then there are taxes and bills.”
"You won't be the first couple to do that" |
Rhys replies that they will not be the first couple to survive on one income,
Hywel predicts that Gaynor will be moaning |
but Hywel moans, “She will complain that she can’t go on a nice holiday or have the best wine.”
Rhys stresses that she has made it clear that she is not going back; “For now, perhaps, but . . .” Hywel begins,
"There's no point going on and on" |
but his son tells him there is no point going on and on; he must wait for her to make a decision.
Mark publicises his sweepstake |
Mark is trying to drum up support for his sweepstake idea, and is telling Jason the choices.
"There's a fair bit of variety there" |
“There’s a fair bit of variety there,” Jason replies, but stoutly refuses the opportunity to bet,
"Oh, sorry, Jason – I never thought!" |
and it finally dawns on Mark that Jason has a gambling problem.
"It's not your fault – I'm responsible for myself" |
“Don’t apologise – it’s not your fault – I’m responsible for myself – no-one else,” says Jason as he walks away.
Iolo has been overdoing it |
Iolo emerges from the alley, looking as if he has overdone the keep fit routine;
"I'm opening up the gym!" |
Rhys calls to him that he is opening up the gym.
"I've just finished a session" |
“Look, to be honest, I’ve just finished a session in the house,” Iolo tells him, but Rhys insists that does not count.
"You need to do some weights" |
“You need to do some weights,” he recommends, “And you’ll be helping me out – the summer has been so flat, I need the place to get busy – can you come now? You’d be amazed how many people hate working out in an empty space.”
"All right, but half an hour, tops" |
Iolo is adamant that he will not do any more than half an hour.
Mark is spending a lot of time in the Deri |
Mark is at the bar of the Deri again, looking miserable; “You might as well move in,” Dani comments,
"Vicky's driving me mad!" |
and he groans that Vicky is driving him mad. She was not aware that Vicky was back.
“Debbie sent her to persuade me to divorce her,” he says,
"You're still married, are you?" |
and Dani is surprised that they are still married; she was under the impression that they divorced a long time ago.
He explains that they have to wait two years; “It’s a long story, but the two years are over now
"She wants to marry this Matteo" |
“and she wants me to divorce her, so she can marry this Matteo.”
Dani sits awkwardly on a stool as he goes on, “I always thought we’d get back together some day.”
"Why would you want to get back together?" |
Dani wonders why he would want to after everything she has done. “Because she’s Debbie,” he guesses.
“Look, nobody gets married, thinking it will end in divorce, but people change,” she advises, “Debbie’s changed – she’s not the same person now.”
He wonders if Dani is regretting going through with the divorce, and she replies quite clearly, “No! I’m not saying that it’s not difficult – in the beginning, anyway,
"You deserve better, Mark" |
“but when you realise there’s no turning back – and that you deserve better – it’s easier.”
"I'd like to believe that, Dan" |
Mark would like to believe that.
Eileen is clearing up |
They seem to have got through a lot of cans and bottles at Penrhewl,
DJ is back again after hearing Sioned's answer |
and Eileen is clearing up the empties, when DJ comes in again;
"The beer gave her an excuse to open up" |
“The beer gave her an excuse to open up,” Eileen tells him, and he confesses that he heard everything.
"She hates me!" |
“She hates me!” he exclaims, but Eileen does not consider it that black and white; he knows what she is like – when she gets hurt, the tough side comes out.
"She hides her true feelings" |
“She hides her true feelings – and you have to find a way to make her realise how she really feels,” Eileen tells him. He demands how he is supposed to do that, and is told to speak to her, perhaps not tomorrow, but before long.
"She'll never change her mind!" |
“Is there any point? She’ll never change her mind!” he snarls dejectedly, but Eileen thinks that he may still have a chance.
Iolo staggers home . . . |
Now even more exhausted, Iolo staggers back into number 7, with his leg causing him some discomfort,
. . . and lowers himself to the sofa |
and collapses on to the sofa.
He looks at the iPad . . . |
He looks at his iPad, which causes him some amusement,
. . . where he is demonstrating the exercises |
watching himself strenuously exercising, and mutters, “Unbelievable!”
He has only just reclined . . . |
As soon as he lies down, Dani arrives, and he says that he is too tired to make her a cup of tea;
. . . when Dani arrives |
“I’ve just done two workouts, back to back – one here and one in the gym with Rhys.”
"Yes, I saw your video" |
She has seen his video, and enquires if he has asked Rhys for tips for the next one.
"Rhys is worried the gym will go out of business" |
“I couldn’t, as he is worried the gym will go out of business, because no-one goes there these days – I feel sorry for him. I think that perhaps Tyler and I should stop doing these videos – the last thing he needs is more competition.”
“Why don’t you let Tyler do the videos,
"How about concentrating on plumbing?" |
“and then you can concentrate on plumbing?” she suggests,
"Guess who your new landlord is!" |
“Anyway, guess who your new landlord is! I wanted to say ages ago, but with this divorce, things have just settled down.”
"Can you ban home workouts?" |
Iolo hopes that, as landlord, she can ban home workouts, but she tells him to shut up
"Come on – workout number three!" |
and make her a cup of tea, now; “Come on – workout number three!
"Milk and two sugars, please" |
“Milk and two sugars, please – and decaf, if you’ve got some.”
Mark is no longer argumentative" |
When Mark returns to Maes-y-Deri, he is in a more conciliatory mood
Vicky is surprised by his change of mind |
and informs Vicky that he is ready to start discussing things with the solicitor;
"You can tell your mother if you want to" |
“You can tell your mother if you want to.” He goes upstairs to bed, and Vicky looks puzzled at the sudden change of mind.
A nocturnal intruder at Penrhewl |
During the night, someone with a small torch comes into Penrhewl and makes their way to the fridge;
A camera is lurking inside the fridge |
opening the door, we see that it is DJ, who helps himself to a can from the shelf.
An 'avenging angel' appears in the background |
He opens it and we can vaguely see someone moving behind him; there is a thud and he falls to the floor,
That is one can he will not be drinking |
a rivulet of beer trickling from the can across the floor.
