Sioned screams for her mother

Sioned, armed with a walking stick, screams for her mother;  “I’ve killed him, haven’t I?”

They discover the casualty is DJ

Eileen turns on the light, discovers that it is DJ and is very upset.   Sioned had suspected that it was a prowler, and is told to fetch a glass of water

Eileen prepares to call an ambulance

while her mother calls for an ambulance.

DJ is by now regaining consciousness and tells them there is no need for that;  “I’m fine,” he insists, “It was my fault.”

"What ate you doing here?"

Sioned slams down the glass of water on the table and demands, “What are you doing here?”

"I've been staying in the caravan"

He confesses that he has been staying in the caravan;  “Since when?   And who gave you permission?” she snarls, “Answer me!”

Eileen urges her to let him regain his senses, but Sioned shouts, “He can phone Non to come and get him – the waster!”

"I'm here on my own"

He replies that he is here on his own, and Eileen tells him to go to the spare room, as he cannot go anywhere after that knock.

Sioned is not at all placated,

"If I'd known it was him, I would have hit him harder!"

growling, “If I’d known it was him, I would have hit him harder!”   Eileen and DJ look at each other.

Garry has removed the 'Moduron Monk' sign . . .

In the morning Mark is on his round when he notices Garry taking down the sign from the garage.

. . . which does not go unnoticed by Griffiths

Ieuan Griffiths is coming round the corner by the surgery when he also sees what is happening and smiles.

DJ is having some breakfast . . .

Eileen has made breakfast for DJ, pointing out that he should have gone to hospital to make sure he was all right;  he simply takes a couple of tablets.

. . . which displeases Sioned

When Sioned enters the room, she is furious to see him there;  “It’s bad enough that you let him stay,

"You're giving him breakfast as well?"

“but you’re giving him breakfast as well?”   Eileen encourages her to give him a chance.

Sioned wants to know why he is back at Penrhewl;

"I've finished with Non"

he advises that he has finished with Non, and realised pretty quickly that it was not going to work.

"I knew that was going to happen!"

“I knew that was going to happen!” she snarls, and he stresses that letting Non come between them was the biggest mistake of his life, but he was too much of a coward to stand up to her.

“You deserve each other – and if you’re unhappy – good!” she growls.

"I'm going to put everything right"

He intends to put everything right, insisting that he wants Sioned and that is why he is there.   “Don’t insult me!   I’m not going to be a second choice for anyone!” she informs him as she walks out.

"I don't know what else I can do"

Eileen does not know what else she can do to help DJ, but he pleads with her not turn her back on him now;

"I don't have a life without Sioned"

“I haven’t given up yet – because I don’t have a life without Sioned.”

"You've got an all-day shift, haven't you?"

Kelly is on the phone to Anita;  “Just double-checking – you’ve got an all-day shift today, haven’t you?   I’m expecting a delivery, so I’ll just leave a message on the door for the courier.   See you tonight.”

"Why are you trying to keep Anita out of the way?"

Jason enquires why she is trying to keep Anita out of the way;  “It’s that obvious, is it?

"Mickey's coming over"

“Mickey’s coming here – I’m doing an article on him in the Western Post, OK?   Truth, nothing but the truth, Jase.”   He predicts that Auntie Anita will kill her.

"I could send her off on holiday"

Kelly jokingly replies that she has a plan B;  “I could send her off on her holiday when it’s published,”

"Good luck with that, Kelly"

and Jason wishes her good luck with that.

She is apprehensive

She does look slightly apprehensive.

"Death warrant, is it?"

Mark comes upon Garry sitting outside the Deri looking at some papers;  he suspects that it is a death warrant.

"Transferring my assets to Dani"

 “Transferring my assets to Dani – look,” Garry replies, handing him the papers.

"Sleeping with Jaclyn has cost you dearly!"

“Oh, Gar, sleeping with Jaclyn has cost you dearly!” Mark exclaims, “Number 7, the salon – Dani needs to sign this – shall I take it in to her?”

"She can have my shirt as well"

Garry sighs that he might as well – and she can have his shirt as well.

When Mark goes into the pub, Griffiths is nearby, gloating over Garry’s misfortunes;

"You're wise to close the garage"

“You’re wise to close the garage – the days of mechanics getting their hands dirty are over.   Technicians in flip-flops repair these electric cars.   What are you going to do with the site?”

Garry has not yet decided;

"Not that it's any of your business"

“Not that it is any of your business!”   Griffiths replies that the council provides grants to fill empty units –

"I'm always ready to help the electorate"

“I’m always ready to help the electorate.”

"If I need help, I'll speak to Hywel"

If Garry needs help, he will speak to Hywel.   Griffiths sneers, “Hywel has enough on his plate with that head teacher –

"Women shouldn't have powerful jobs"

“I’ve always said that women shouldn’t have powerful jobs – they can’t handle it like us men!”   He walks off, still smirking.

Eileen is on the phone to Hywel

Eileen is speaking on the phone and informs Sioned that she is going over to see Hywel;  “I told DJ that he can have a shower,” she adds, which does not go down well with her daughter,

"How did he get the key?"

who cannot believe he has been hiding in the caravan, and they did not know.

“How did he get the key?” she asks,

"I don't think it was locked"

and Eileen does not think that it was locked.

Sioned is starting to see a pattern here

“It’s odd that you mentioned DJ last night after all these months,” Sioned continues, “And you weren’t shocked to see him, either – did you know he was in the caravan?   Mam, I deserve the truth!   I can see that jobs have been done around the place – it’s obvious that DJ has been here.

"The cans, the pants – the weren't Hywel's!"

“The cans, and the pants – those weren’t Hywel’s.”

"He turned up a week ago"

Eileen finally confesses that he turned up about a week ago and that she lost her temper with him;

"Why did you let him stay here?"

“Why did you let him stay here?   And lie for him, of all people?”   She answers that she wanted to give him a chance to prove that he regrets what he did – and he does –

"He's heartbroken, Sioned!"

he is heartbroken.

"What he did to me was unforgivable!"

Sioned rages, “What he did to me was unforgivable – how much proof do you need to see what a waster he is?

"I need the pleasure of sorting this out myself!"

“You go and see Hywel – I need the pleasure of sorting this out myself!”

Mickey arrives at Llwyncelyn . . .

Jason is dealing with some APD paperwork when Mickey arrives,

. . . and Kelly brings him tea

and Kelly brings him a cup of tea.   “So, first things first, Auntie Anita doesn’t know anything about this chat,

"So keep schtum, right?"

“so keep schtum, right?”

"But the article will be in the paper"

He points out that the article will be in the paper and she is bound to find out;

"That's my problem"

“That’s my problem – cross that bridge if and when we come to it.

"Cheeky happy chappie!"

“Right, pictures.”   He asks if she wants him to smile;  “Absolutely – the readers want to see a cheeky happy chappie!” she tells him,

"You clearly enjoy your job"

and he can see that she clearly enjoys her job.

"Less stressful than preserving homo sapiens"

“Yes, I do – it’s less stressful than preserving homo sapiens – running a café and feeding everyone.”

He recalls that his first business was selling watches to students, and he made enough to open a shop.   Then he demolished it and built five houses;

"Merthyr boy comes good!"

she summarises, “Merthyr boy comes good!” and realises it has been a long time since she was back there.

“A couple of gins with Jessie Roberts always use to end up in a session,” she recalls,

"Gin June!"

and Mickey says that Jessie took after her mother, who everyone used to call ‘Gin June!’

"Right, down to business"

“Jessie and I were separated at birth – our mothers were actually in the same maternity unit – 36 years ago!   Right – enough about our past in Merthyr – down to business.”

"Thanks for coming over, Eileen"

Hywel thanks Eileen for coming over;  he did not want to discuss the matter on the phone.   “I’m very worried about Gaynor,” he begins, but Eileen does not know how she can help with this.

"Gaynor needs permanent peace of mind"

“Thank you for postponing the inquiry, but it is only temporarily, isn’t it?   She needs permanent peace of mind,” he says.

"She has to face the consequences"

Eileen explains that she has to face the consequences, and he reveals that she is not planning to return to work.

"Early retirement is the best thing . . ."

“Early retirement is the best thing for her in terms of her health –

". . . then we could just forget about the other business"

“and then we could just forget about the other business.”

"The governors have to hold an inquiry"

Eileen makes it quite clear that the governors have to hold an inquiry, or they will be criticised.   He insists that he is trying to help her out here;

"It would avoid any bad publicity"

“It would avoid any bad publicity for the school.”

“Don’t try to tell me what to do, Hywel,” she responds, and he maintains that she has a lot to learn about politics in education.   It is important to have the support of councillors.

"I'm not doing any deals with you"

She spells it out that she is not doing any deals with him or anyone else,

"Well, you'll regret it, believe me"

so he makes the veiled threat, “Right, well, you’ll regret it, believe me,” and she leaves the house.

Garry gets a drink . . .

Garry takes his drink from the bar

. . . and sits in the corner

and goes to sit in the corner, looking depressed;

Cassie queries Mark's frequent visits

Mark comes downstairs, and is told by Cassie, “You’re back and forth like a clerk in an attorney’s office.”   He points out that they have both signed it,

"How they divide the crown jewels"

how they divide the crown jewels, so there is no turning back.

"Who do I work for – Garry or Dani?"

“He’s closed the garage – what’s happening here?   Who do I work for – Garry or Dani?” she enquires.

"I shall be the manager!"

Mark, with a grin, tells her a tale that they are turning the Deri into a community pub, and that he will be the manager.   She mutters, “What else does one expect from a donkey, but a kick?”

"Another coffee, please"

DI Wilkinson asks for another cup of coffee,

"I wish I could drink it without sugar"

and she wishes that she could drink coffee without sugar;  “It’s not difficult, and it’s not a big sacrifice,” he replies, adding that he is not training for a competition, but just competes against the clock.

"You really deserve a knighthood"

Kelly is highly impressed by Mickey;  “You really deserve a knighthood for all the money you’ve raised for charity – it makes me feel guilty, actually,

"The only way I've helped is Community Service"

“because the only way I’ve helped the community is community service.   I was young and impressionable – but I really like the idea of having a toy bank in Cwmderi.”

"I can set you on the way, Kelly"

He will help set her on the way, and she comments, “You’re breaking the mould of the ruthless businessman.”

"Merthyr boys have big hearts!"

He gives the excuse that Merthyr boys have big hearts, and recalls the good old days.

Jason is home

Just then his phone sounds, as Jason comes in through the back door;

"Problem on the site in Cross Hands"

“I have to go – a problem on the site in Cross Hands,” says Mickey.   Jason has seen that site, and did not know that it was one of Mickey’s.

Mickey may be able to put some work APD's way

“We’re looking for subcontractors,” he is told and Mickey leaves his card.

Kelly will send the photos to him before they go to print;

"When the girls see that cheeky smile . . ."

“And when the girls see that cheeky smile, they’ll be queueing up to get work done!” she predicts.

DJ, with his minimal amount of luggage

Sioned is washing-up when DJ comes into the room, carrying his bag;

"Getting Mam to do your dirty work"

“You’re a real coward, you know,” she says, “Getting Mam to do your dirty work for you,” but he admits that he put Eileen in an impossible situation.

"My wedding day was supposed to be the happiest day"

“You’ve hurt us both so much – my wedding day was supposed to be the happiest day of my life – and you were probably sleeping with Non while I was sorting everything out!”

"Non was messing with my head"

He gives the excuse that Non was messing with his head, and he did not know what he was doing.   “Cancelling the wedding would have been something,” she roars,

"But to leave me outside the chapel!"

“But to leave me outside the chapel!”   I still have nightmares, DJ!”

"I didn't mean to hurt you"

He lamely replies that he did not mean to hurt her, and that it was a rash decision, but she does not want to hear it.

"In case you change your mind"

He maintains that he is going to hang around in case she changes her mind.   She informs him, “You did me a favour – to think I could be married to you now.

"Rhys was a lot better than you, too!"

“I moved on quickly – I slept with Rhys that night – he was a lot better than you, too!”

This hits home to DJ . . .

This seems to take the wind out of DJ’s sails, and she returns to her washing-up;

. . . and he slinks away

he sadly turns and leaves the farm.

Garry has given Mark a drink

In the Deri, Garry has bought Mark a drink, and intimates that he may have more jobs for him to do,

"If you're happy to be paid in lager"

if he is happy to be paid in lager.

"You need to slow down as you get older"

Mark returns to his round, and Ieuan Griffiths, who is standing by the bar, comments to Cassie, “You look tired – you need to slow down as you get older.”   She makes the point that she is younger than him;

"The years catch up quicker with you women"

“But the years catch up quicker with you women – it’s all that makeup – the natural moisture leaves the skin.”

"A break before your job as a barman?"

When she walks away, he turns his attentions to Garry, in the corner;  “Taking a break before starting a full-time job as a barman?” he enquires,

"Best way to save money – sack the staff"

“It’s the best way to save money – sack the staff.”

"I'm not sacking anyone"

Garry makes it clear that he is not sacking anyone, but Griffiths continues, “Come on – the divorce will cost you a fortune, like everyone else.”

Garry’s answer is that it will be worth every penny, and Griffiths admires his determination;

"It's how quickly you get up"

“It’s not the size of the blow, but how quickly you get up.”

"You're an expert, are you?"

“And you’re an expert, are you?” demands Garry, and Griffiths comes to the conclusion that he does not look as if he wants to get back up.   “If you don’t mind, I’ve got stuff to do!” Garry snarls,

"The end of the Monks' empire"

but is advised not to throw away the sign on the garage, as it is a historical relic – the end of the Monks’ empire.   Chuckling, he walks away.

"Not a word to Anita, mind!"

When they hear the door of Llwyncelyn open, Kelly reminds Jason not to say a word to Anita;

However, it is DJ

however she finds that it is DJ, and they wonder what he is doing there.   “Sorry to call without warning,” he says,

"Where's your partner in crime, then?"

and Kelly wants to know where his partner in crime is.

"Even Sioned didn't deserve that!"

He announces that it is over.

“Oh, is it now?   I think what you did was despicable!” she squeals, “Even Sioned didn’t deserve that!”   DJ has had enough for one day and urges her not to start;  he just needs somewhere to stay,

Kelly does not want to accommodate him

but Kelly tells him that there is no room to swing a cat in the house.

Jason, however, takes a more conciliatory approach;

"You can sleep in Mam's and Dai's room"

“You can sleep in Mam’s and Dai’s room – it’s fine, not a problem.”

Kelly's quizzical look

Kelly cannot understand his attitude, and when DJ has gone upstairs,

"I've been forgiven – he deserves the same"

Jason reminds her, “I’ve been forgiven, haven’t I – after making a real mess of things?   He deserves the same.”

Sioned is sitting quietly on the sofa when her mother returns,

"We've picked another date for the wedding"

and she sarcastically remarks, “We’ve picked another date for the wedding – is the mother of the bride happy now?”

"I hoped you could sort it out"

Eileen had been hoping that they would find a way to sort it all out;  she has never seen her daughter so happy as she was with DJ and thinks it is a shame to throw it all away.

"I could never be happy with DJ again!"

“I can never be happy with DJ again,” Sioned declares, “He makes me sick!”   Her mother reminds her that she was head over heels in love with him, and needs to try and find that again.

"I would have to be desperate"

“I would have to be desperate to take him back – I can hear him now, saying he loves me – saying he’s never felt like this before.

"I never want to see him again, Mam!"

“I never want to see him again, Mam!   And don’t try to change my mind.”

"I'm over DJ" — methinks she doth protest too much

Eileen insists that she just wants what is best for her daughter;
  Sioned is adamant, “I’m over DJ – and I’m looking forward to meeting someone you can be proud of, too.”
