26 January 2021

DJ is still lying on the road . . .

We see DJ lying motionless in the road;

. . . and behind the shattered windscreen Aled has 'lost it'

behind the crazed windscreen, Aled is the grip of a panic attack and is breathing very rapidly, gripping the steering wheel.  [We see a newly-erected steel fire escape staircase which is covering the ‘Welcome to Cwmderi’ mural by the garage.]

He goes towards DJ

He gets out of the car and staggers across towards DJ,

"I've killed him!"

bending down and exclaiming, “His head’s bleeding – I’ve killed him — do something!” to Dylan,

Dylan seems paralysed

who urges him not to touch DJ, but neither of them do anything about calling an ambulance.

Aled steers around the inert figure and escapes . . .

Aled hurries back to the car and drives away from the scene of the incident;

. . . round the corner by the Medical Centre

“Where are you going?   You can’t leave!” Dylan shouts at him, and is left there alone, also panicking.

Cassie jumps to an immediate conclusion

Cassie comes out of the Deri wondering what the noise was, and discovers the inert DJ;  “What have you done to him?” she demands,

"I found him like this"

and he protests that he found DJ like this.

Cassie summons an 'ambiwlans'

Cassie immediately phones for an ambulance,

"And I'm going to tell the police that you were here!"

warning him, “And I’m going to tell the police you were here!”

Aled seeks refuge at number 10

Meanwhile, Aled, who could not have got very far before abandoning the car, bursts in through the back gate of number 10;  he looks at the blood on his hands

He goes up to the back door

and then bangs repeatedly on the door of the house, which is uncharacteristically locked.

"Aled, what's happened?"

Tesni lets him in and wants to know why he is in such a state;  fortunately for him, she is alone in the house,

"I've killed him!"

and he rages, “I’ve killed him!   Sorry – I had nowhere else to go –

"Help me, Tes, please!"

“help me, Tes, please!”

Now Dylan has blood-stained hands

Cassie cautions Dylan not to move DJ,

"What happened?"

and then Jaclyn arrives from the café, asking what happened.   Dylan comes up with a tale about hearing a thud and coming out of the house to see a car driving away;  he describes it as a hit and run.

"That's your story now, is it?"

“That’s your story now, is it?” says Cassie, sceptically,

"Do you see my car anywhere round here?"

and he demands whether she can see his car anywhere around.

Jaclyn asks her what she thinks happened, and is told that Cassie did not see anything;

"Why would Dylan lie? — to save his own skin?

“So Dyl saw more than you – why would he lie?”    she demands.

"You would never cover for anyone but yourself!"

Nevertheless, she looks accusingly at her brother, and says, “I’m not doing this again – you want me to believe it wasn’t you?   You would never cover for anyone but yourself!”

"This is different – I did it for my son!"

He replies that this is different – he stresses that he has lied for his son,

"Your son?"

and she cannot believe what she has heard.

Aled stares at his hands

Inside number 10, Aled looks at his hands and Tesni encourages him to breathe deeply;  “Breathing isn’t going to help me!” he snarls,

"You haven't said who or why"

“I’ve killed someone.”   She reminds him that he has not said who or why;  she does not know what she is supposed to do.

He sobs, “I tried to check if he was breathing, but Dylan said . . .”

"What – Uncle Dylan was there?"

She is shocked that her Uncle Dylan was also there, and then they hear the sound of a siren.   “The police are looking for me!” he shouts and tries to hide.

"No, it's an ambulance"

Tesni looks out of the window and reassures him that it is an ambulance, and that know one knows he is there;

"The police will drag me off to prison"

“Did anyone see you?   If they were looking for you, we would know.”   He predicts that they will come to find him and drag him off to prison,

"You need to tell me the truth, Aled"

but she attempts to convince him, “You’re safe here with me – what you need is to tell me the truth if you want me to help you.”

"It was DJ – I've killed DJ!"

He nods his head, and finally reveals, “It was DJ – I’ve killed DJ!”

Tesni is lost for words

Tesni is dumbfounded.

Sioned arrives as the ambulance is about to leave

The crew have loaded the casualty into the ambulance, and a police car is also in attendance;  Sioned comes running down the street, followed by her mother, and they agree to follow the ambulance to the hospital.

Jaclyn addresses Dylan, “We have to stick to the same story – don’t deny that you were here!” she warns him,

"Thanks, Jac"

and he is grateful.

"What – for me saving your skin again?"

“What – for me saving your skin again?   You can start by explaining about Aled.”

"Are you ready to give a statement?"

A police officer, whose name is not mentioned, comes across and asks if they are ready to give a statement,

The ambulance conveys DJ to hospital

and the ambulance departs very carefully round the narrow corner by the medical centre.

Aled is given a glass of water

Tesni brings Aled a glass of water;

"I shall have to confess what I've done!"

he concludes that he will have to go across there and confess what he has done, “That I have killed DJ!

"It wasn't him I was trying to . . ."

“He wasn’t meant to be there – it wasn’t him I was trying to . . . he stepped in front of the car.”

"You wanted to hit someone else?"

She cannot believe that he was trying to hit someone,

Aled will say no more

but he does not want to discuss it – not with her, with the police, or anyone.   “The first thing you need to do is get rid of that blood – we'll put your top in the wash,” she tells him, “Go and get cleaned up.”

She sends him to get cleaned up

He heads upstairs to the bathroom and Tesni looks very confused.

Cassie arrives home at number 9 in a state of shock,

"What's going on outside the Deri?"

and Garry demands what is going on outside the Deri;  “There’s an ambulance out there, and police,” he says.

"It's DJ, poor thing – he was hit by a car"

She announces that DJ, poor thing, was hit by a car;  he has gone in the ambulance, but she does not know if he is alive.

“I wasn’t there when it happened – but Dylan was, acting very suspiciously,” she continues, “You’re pretty touchy yourself!”

"Why would I want to hurt DJ?"

He protests that he has been in the house all day, and in any case, why would he want to hurt DJ.

Dylan's involvement interests Garry

He would be interested to know why Dylan was there, surmising that he might have done it.

"Something strange is going on"

“I don’t know, Garry – the only thing I do know is that something strange is going on,”

"Why don't you ask him yourself?"

she replies, “If you’re so worried about him, why don’t you ask him yourself?”

Garry ponders his next move

Garry sits and thinks.

"How long does it take to do a scan?"

In the hospital, Sioned is becoming increasingly anxious;  “How long does it take to do a scan?” she asks her mother,

"I'm going to find a nurse"

“I’m going to find a nurse,” but Eileen advises that there may be other people ahead of DJ.

"Something has happened!"

“Or something has happened!” Sioned sobs.

"The doctors know what they are doing, Sioned"

Eileen assures her that he is in the right place – the doctors know what they are doing;  if something had happened, they would have told her.

"I'm not family, am I?"

Sioned doubts if they would, pointing out that she is not family.

Dylan is definitely 'rattled'

Inside Hywel’s house, the constable takes their statements and, as Dylan looks at the blood on his hands, is told by Jaclyn, “Well, it all happened so quickly, but when I arrived, Dyl was trying to help DJ and Cassie was phoning for an ambulance.   There was no-one else there.”

"Do you remember anything?"

The officer asks if Dylan remembers anything;   “I heard a noise, came out of the house and saw the car drive away –

Lying through his teeth – as usual

“it was a white hatchback, but there was nothing else, sorry.”

The constable takes his leave of them

They are thanked for their help and the constable leaves.

"Do you think he believed us?"

“Do you think he believed that?” wonders Dylan, and she answers that he had better hope so.   She wants to know how long he has known about Aled, and he says that he has only just found out, but she is doubtful about that.

“Has he told you who his mother is?” she demands,

"It's Bethan"

and he replies that it is Bethan.

"I knew that baby was yours"

“I knew it – I knew that baby was yours!” she rages, “You knew it too, didn’t you?”   Dylan remains silent.

Aled has borrowed one of Guto's shirts

Aled comes downstairs, wearing one of Guto’s shirts;  Tesni reassures him that her brother will not notice that one is missing.

"I will wash the clothes"

She will wash the bloodstained clothes, but then there is a knock at the door,

A knock at the door scares Aled

and again Aled panics.

The policeman is making door-to-door enquiries

Tesni speaks to the officer, who is making door-to-door enquiries, she pleads ignorance about the accident,

Aled's phone rings . . .

while Aled’s phone sounds in the kitchen, so he goes outside the back door.

. . . and he finds it is Dylan

He answers the phone in a frantic state, and Dylan wants to know where he is;

"I need you to come to the house"

“I need you to come to the house – we need to talk,” Dylan insists,

"I can't do that!"

but Aled is adamant he cannot do that.

"The police will see that as guilt"

“I’ll come and get you – don’t run away, or the police will see that as guilt, OK?”

"But I did it!"

Aled acknowledges that he did it, and is sternly warned never to say that again.

Aled brings the call to an end

Aled terminates the call, much to the annoyance of Dylan, who rapidly leaves the house,

Dylan has picked up a brush and dustpan . . .

carrying a brush and dustpan, with Jaclyn still sitting on the sofa.

. . . he can just be spotted beyond the police car

Tesni is telling the police officer, “Dad went to work this morning and Mam had a shift – there’s no-one here except me.   I didn’t know anything had happened until I heard a siren.

"I saw the ambulance through the window"

“I saw the ambulance through the window – it was horrible!”   Aled quietly comes back in through the back door.

Dylan does some cleaning up . . .

Dylan is out in the street, sweeping up the broken glass from the pavement

. . . and is under Garry Monk's scrutiny

when Garry emerges from the garage and looks at him, very suspiciously.

"I'll make us a cup of tea"

At Penrhewl, Eileen will make a cup of tea

Sioned is overwhelmed with grief

and Sioned once more breaks down in tears;  her mother tries to comfort her,

"Everything will be all right"

“Look, it will take some time, but everything will be all right, you’ll see.”   Sioned points out that she does not know that, but is told, “DJ’s young, healthy – and he’s alive!”

"Mam, he's in a coma!"

“But he’s got to have an operation!” wails Sioned, but apparently it is only on his elbow, and nothing major.   “Mam, he’s in a coma!” her daughter exclaims, but it is pointed out that it is for his own benefit.

"I'm going back – I never should have left him!"

“But what about the effect of the concussion?” Sioned goes on, “No, I’m going back – I never should have left him!”

"You need to support him when he comes home"

Eileen stresses that she is no help to him there;  “You need to rest – you need to support him when he comes home.”    Sioned expresses doubt whether he will come home, but is reminded that she knows from experience that being in an induced coma is for his own good, and that she needs to be more positive.

"I always lose everyone!"

“How can you tell me to be more positive?” she roars, “I always lose everyone!”   Eileen is confident that she is not losing DJ, and that he will get through this.

Sioned receives a call from Jaclyn . . .

Sioned’s phone sounds,

. . .enquiring about DJ

and she finds it is a call from Jaclyn, enquiring if there is any news.

"Was that Aled on the phone?"

Dylan is interested to know if that was Aled on the phone;

"You're only his father when it suits you!"

“Oh, you care now, do you?” Jaclyn snarls, “You’re only his father when it suits you – he’s missing – he could say anything and drop you in it!”

"If he tells the truth, I could be charged"

Dylan protests that he had to lie to the cops to clear up Aled’s mess;  “If he tells the truth, I could be charged for concealing information.”

"Why don't you take responsibility for once?"

She screams at him to stop being so selfish and to take responsibility for once.

“I didn’t kill DJ!” he reminds her, and she informs him that DJ is in an introduced coma;  Sioned told her that on the phone.

Dylan is relieved to hear this, but Jaclyn is going to try and find Aled,

"He's not a murderer – unlike his father!"

to tell him he is not a murderer;  “Not like his father!” she emphasises.

"Was it Uncle Dyl you wanted to hurt?"

As they sit silently at number 10, Tesni begins, “You know, earlier you said Uncle Dyl was there outside the Deri – and you said DJ got in the way?   Was it Uncle Dyl you wanted to hurt?”

"Why would you want to hurt him?"

There is no answer, and she protests, “He’s my uncle – why would you want to hurt him?”

"He said horrible things to me"

Aled replies, He said horrible things to me – he said he’s ashamed of me.”

"Why would he say that?"

Tesni wants to know why he would say that;

"We're best friends, aren't we?"

she maintains that Aled can tell her, as they are best friends.

"More than friends – we're cousins  . . "

He enlightens her, “We’re more than friends – we’re cousins.

". . . Dylan's my father!"

“Dylan’s my father!”

This is a tremendous shock to Tesni

Tesni looks extremely shocked by this revelation.
