Sara gives Dylan detailed instructions

Sara is going somewhere, and is briefing Dylan to take care of Ifan in her absence;  “There are slices of apple and carrot in the box,” but he protests that the apple is turning brown already, and he will buy fresh fruit.   She continues, “If you give him grapes, make sure they’re cut in half.”

"Shall I cut the carrot into origami shapes?"

He sarcastically asks if he should cut the carrot into origami shapes, but she points out that Ifan could choke on them – and there is a spare set of clothes, just in case.   

"If anything happens, I'll deal with it"

He is confident that if anything happens, he will deal with it;  “This isn’t the first time I’ve looked after a child,” 

"This si the first time you've looked after my child"

but she emphasises that it is the first time he has looked after her child.

“I know Ifan is your world, so I’ll look after him as if he were mine,” he assures her, 

"Remember to pick him up before lunch"

and as she leaves, she reminds him to pick Ifan up before lunch.   This comes as a surprise, as he thought it was to be at four o’clock;   

Dylan tries to contact someone

he immediately gets out his phone.

"I read FHM when I was your age!"

Guto is reading a copy of Decanter magazine, which puzzles his father;  “I read FHM when I was your age!” he comments, 

"That won't help me become a sommelier"

but Guto replies that looking at pictures of naked girls will not help him become a sommelier – which he explains to mean a wine expert.

"After the state of you the other night . . ."

His mother moans at him about his overindulgence the other night, and he answers that he has learned his lesson now and grown up.   

"He used to wear a 'dicky bow'!"

She recalls that when he was five, he thought he was grown up and used to go round wearing a ‘dicky bow’.

"Why can't you take me seriously – like Dylan and Sara do?"

“Why can’t you take me seriously?” Guto moans, “Dylan and Sara do – do you know what?

"Dylan wants me to take a bigger rôle in the business"

“Dylan’s really supportive – he even said he wants me to play a bigger rôle in the business.”   

"And we can guess what 'business' that is, can't we?"

This is regarded with some apprehension by his parents, and Guto goes on, “We’re going to discuss it this week – he has big plans for me!”

Gaynor wonders what the school has in store for her today

Gaynor is preparing for school, and groans, “Goodness knows what I’ll find there today!”   

"I'm sure Ffion can cope"

Hywel is sure that Ffion can cope, but Gaynor points out that it is a big step from being deputy to being head.   Then she wonders what she did with her keys, and he says they are under some files which she has just put down.

"I'll go and check on the bathroom"

He tells her that he will be going to the playgroup and popping into the garage;  “And I’ll go to the house to check on progress with the bathroom.”   Gaynor asks if he will be staying at Llwyncelyn tonight, and he replies that he was thinking of moving back to his house tomorrow;  

"I promise we'll have a nice evening"

he will cook dinner tonight, which she describes as their ‘last dinner.’   He promises that they will have a nice evening.

"It will be very odd without you here"

“It will be very odd here without you,” she ponders, and he suspects that she does not really want him to leave.   

Dylan appears in the garage

Gerwyn is hard at work under the bonnet of a car when he becomes aware of Dylan, standing there;  

"Guto was upset with you this morning, then?"

“Guto was upset with you this morning, then?” he says, “He told me – he’s pretty open with me – sees me as a confidant, perhaps.   You know, someone he can rely on.”

"Your final chance to do this pick-up"

Then Dylan gets to the point of his visit;  “I wanted to give you a final chance to do this pick-up – are you on board?”   

'I'm not 'on board' with anything to do with you!"

Gerwyn snarls that he is not ‘on board’ with anything to do with Dylan, who regards that as disappointing.

"Guto is eager to help Uncle Dyl out"

“But Guto will be delighted – he’s desperate to help Uncle Dyl out,” Dylan smirks, 

"Leave Guto alone!"

and once again is told, in no uncertain terms, to leave Guto alone.   “It’s either you or him!” Dylan informs him.

"I wanted to know if we can reschedule"

Then Dylan’s phone rings;  “I just wanted to know if we can reschedule? 

"OK, don't worry – I'll be there"

“No – OK, don’t worry – I’ll be there.”   

Gerwyn is very suspicious

He takes another look at Gerwyn, 

Dylan grins and leaves

and grins as he walks out of the garage.

Gaynor is after Ffion, again

At school, Ffion is not feeling her usual self;  

"Where's that report about free school dinners?"

Gaynor wants to know the whereabouts of a report about free school dinners that she was compiling, 

"I e-mailed it to you – I think"

and Ffion thinks that she e-mailed it, but is not too sure.   

"The meeting's in half an hour!"

“The meeting’s in half an hour!” Gaynor growls, and her humour is not improved 

"Hand stuck in the vending machine?"

when she receives a phone message that a year 7 pupil has their hand stuck in the vending machine, 

Ffion thinks this is rather amusing . . .

which Ffion finds rather funny, 

. . . but Gaynor clearly does not see the funny side

but Gaynor does not share her amusement.

Gerwyn climbs from the subterranean depths

Gerwyn is in the pit under a car when 

Peace offerings from Jaclyn

Jaclyn arrives with a flask of coffee and his sandwiches;  he says that he will have them later, 

"I'm sorry Dylan has brought this drugs business to us"

and she apologises, “I’m sorry that Dyl has brought this drugs business to our door.”   

He seems to doubt her sincerity

He wonders if she really is sorry.

“I didn’t realise how bad it was to start with – did you know that Gwyneth works for him?” she goes on, 

"People have the ability to say no"

and Gerwyn replies that is her choice, and that people have the ability to say no.   

"What if the children started messing around"

“But the drugs aren’t just our problem, Ger – they ruin lives – what if the children started messing around?” she demands.

"I've got this car to finish

He is eager for her to leave, and says that he has to finish this car, 

Jaclyn leaves the garage . . .

so she goes, rather reluctantly, 

. . . and Gerwyn is very worried

and Gerwyn looks very worried.

"Well, I can't find the report"

Ffion cannot find the report in question;  “What am I supposed to do about this meeting?” Gaynor demands, 

"I'm beginning to wonder whether you even did it!"

“I’m beginning to wonder whether you even did it!   You’re the deputy, who has let me down!”

"I've done a lot to help you recently!"

Ffion protests that she has done a lot to help recently, with that skiing trip and so on, and advises that Gaynor should show some gratitude.   

"That's the job – what do you want – a medal?"

“That’s the job, Ffion – what do you want – a medal?” is the gruff reply.

Ffion is definitely feeling off-colour

Ffion is feeling increasingly unwell, and collapses into a chair, as Gaynor drones on about not appearing professional.   

"Are you all right, Ffion?"

She then realises that something really is wrong, as Ffion is almost passing out.

"Don't go so fast, then!"

Hywel is at the garage, and complains, “There’s a knock on the driver’s side when I hit around 70.”   Gerwyn’s solution to that is not to go so fast, and appears unsure of when he can look at the car.   

What is this that Gerwyn has noticed at the end of the street?

This is emphasised when Gerwyn sees Dylan and Guto at the other end of the street, 

It appears to be money changing hands

where a wad of money is changing hands.

Hywel is now being totally ignored

By this time Gerwyn is completely ignoring Hywel, and is determined that he has to close the garage;  “I can’t do it today – I have too much to do – sorry, Hywel.”   

"Does Garry know you're closing at lunchtime?"

“Does Garry know you’re closing at lunchtime?” Hywel demands, and he is offered a discount if he does not tell Garry.   Gerwyn rapidly finishes locking up.

Jaclyn is still taking the medication

Jaclyn is taking a couple of tablets when Dylan arrives, needing a favour;  

"I want someone to look after Ifan this afternoon"

“I need you to look after Ifan this afternoon – something’s come up, and it will just be half an hour.”   

"I almost died, remember?"

She refuses, pointing out that she should be resting, as he will recall, she almost died.   

"Just put him in front of the television"

“Just put him in front of the television – you can rest on the sofa,” is Dylan’s answer to that, but she makes it clear she is not doing him any more favours.

"You never think of others, Dyl!"

“You never think of others, Dyl!” she declares, but he emphasises that something important has come up.   “What could be more important than looking after a child?” she demands, “Why not take him with you?”   He says that would not look very professional, but she is sure that they will understand.   

Dylan has to admit defeat

He gives up the argument and leaves the house.

"Where is he, then?"

At the same moment, Gerwyn comes in through the back door;  “He just wanted me to look after Ifan,” she informs him, 

"He's up to something, and I'm going to find out what!"

and he is sure that Dylan is up to something, which he is going to find out about.

"Do you want me to phone a doctor?"

Gaynor has brought Ffion some water, and is now very concerned about her, asking whether she should phone a doctor, but is told that Ffion is feeling better;  “I’ve put much pressure on you, haven’t I?” realises Gaynor, 

"Not the first time you've done that!"

and Ffion reminds her that it is not the first time she has done that.

“It’s not natural to faint like that during a chat – how are your iron levels?” Gaynor enquires, 

"I'm pregnant!"

and Ffion hesitates before saying anything, but then reveals that she is pregnant.   

Gaynor was not expecting that

This comes as somewhat of a surprise to Gaynor, and Ffion says that they had not planned it, so it is rather a shock.   

“How does Rhys feel about it?” is the next question, but Ffion has not had the chance to tell him yet, 

"Please don't say anything, Gaynor"

and begs that Gaynor should not say anything.   She will probably tell him tonight.

"I'm sorry about the way I spoke"

Gaynor assures Ffion she will not say a word, and is apologetic for the way she spoke earlier;  

"Don't worry – I'm used to it!"

“Don’t worry – I’m used to it!” Ffion groans.

Ifan is on the swing in the park

At the playground in the park, Dylan is pushing Ifan on the swing, as a stranger talks to him;  

"If you had told me this ten years ago, I'd have said you were nuts!"

“If you’d told me ten years ago that we’d be in a park, pushing swings, I would have said you were nuts.”   Dylan points out that things change, but the stranger, apparently called Dafydd, maintains, “People don’t!   Is this permanent, then?”   Dylan is very noncommittal about that

"Do you like coming to the park with Uncle Daf?"

“Do you like coming to the park with Uncle Daf?” the man asks Ifan, then turns to Dylan;  “How do you manage it?   Working for me, and this?’   Dylan replies that he gets by.

Gerwyn is keeping watch on them

From a distance, they are being watched by Gerwyn, 

"A couple of the boys say you're getting sloppy"

as Dafydd continues, “A couple of the boys have been talking, saying that you’re getting sloppy.”   

"I've sorted out the problems"

Dylan assures him that he has sorted out the problems and there is no need to worry.   

Gerwyn witnesses something being handed over

He is handed something with instructions for the pick-up;  “Where and when to collect the shipment – will it be you?”   

"Someone else will be doing it"

Dylan replies that somebody else will be doing it, and Dafydd hopes that it is someone that they can trust;  “No more slip-ups, do you hear?” and he walks away.

Hywel is cooking dinner

Hywel is cooking dinner when Gaynor returns home and hands him a toothbrush;  

"It's for me, when I come to stay"

“For the new bathroom – it’s for me, when I come to stay,” she informs him.   

Gaynor needs some alcohol

Then she sits down and takes a swig of wine;  

So much for keeping it a secret

“Ffion’s pregnant!” she exclaims, “She almost fainted in school today, so she had to tell me – but please don’t tell anyone!   It’s a secret.”   

"I didn't know they wanted children"

Hywel does not look very impressed by this;  “I didn’t know they wanted children,” he says, and she tells him that it was not planned.   

"I shall have to find another deputy to cover the maternity leave"

Gaynor’s main concern is that she will have to find another deputy to cover the maternity leave, 

Hywel is shocked by the news

and Hywel is in a state of shock.   Then they hear Esther calling from upstairs, and Gaynor goes to her.

Ifan is pretty active

In the park, Ifan is running around energetically, 

"He brought a child with him – I think he's gone soft"

as Dafydd, in his car nearby, is reporting by phone that the matter is sorted;  “Someone else is doing it, but someone he trusts.   You won’t believe this, but he brought a child with him – I think he’s gone soft – but I’ll keep an eye on him.   

"At least we know his weakness now"

“At least we know what his weakness is now.”

He zooms in with his phone . . . 

He takes a photo of Dylan and Ifan in the playground with his phone, carefully zooming in on them, 

. . . carefully composing the photo

before driving away.

"Ooh, pasta for dinner!"

Gaynor reports that Esther is now fast asleep, and sits down to her meal of pasta;  

"From tomorrow I shall have to make my own dinner"

“I shouldn’t complain because from tomorrow on I’ll have to make my own dinner.   I shouldn’t have told you about Ffion.”   

"It's like something you read in one of those terrible magazines!"

He replies that it came as rather a shock – his own son having a baby with his ex-wife;  “It’s like something you read in one of those terrible magazines!”   Gaynor reminds him that they seem very happy together, 

"I can't help but feel it's not right for Rhys"

but he sneers, “For now – I can’t help but feel it’s not right for Rhys.   I don’t think he’s old enough yet.   He didn’t want the other baby he had!”

"Eat your food before it gets cold"

Gaynor says that he is older now, and encourages Hywel to eat his food before it gets cold.

Ffion's test kit shows . . .

At Cysgod y Glyn, Ffion is staring at a pregnancy test kit, 

. . . quite clearly, 'Not Pregnant'

and sees that it clearly reads ‘Not Pregnant’.   Then her phone sounds, 

Rhys will be late tonight

and there is a message from Rhys, informing her that he will be in the gym until ten tonight.

All the exertion has tired Dylan

Sara returns home to the café flat to find Dylan asleep on the sofa, 

Gerwyn has also arrived

and coming upstairs behind her is Gerwyn.   

"We had a great time!"

He reports that it went well, and they had fun together, then she goes to see Ifan in the bedroom.

"I saw you today, Dylan – you're sick!"

“New experience – being responsible for someone else,” remarks Gerwyn, “I saw you today, with Ifan – you’re sick, do you know that?   Putting a child in danger!”

"I don't know what you think you saw"

“I don’t know what you think you saw,” Dylan replies, “It was an old friend, that’s all.   And if I were you, I’d worry more about my own son.   

"Are you going to do this pick-up, then?"

Are you going to do this pick-up, then?”

"Yes, I'll do it for you"

This time, Gerwyn has changed his mind, and replies that he will;  “I’ll do the pick-up for you – or you will have taken every child in Cwmderi with you.   But there is a condition – 

"I don't want you near Guto, or anyone else"

“I don’t want you near Guto, or anyone else – and I want you to leave Sara and her son alone as well.   You’re on your own from now on Dylan – do you understand?”

"Anything you say, boss"

Dylan with his ingratiating smile, tells him, “Anything you say, boss,” and Gerwyn leaves the flat.   

A veiled threat from Dafydd

A text appears on Dylan’s phone;  the photo of him and Ifan is captioned, “Great meeting Ifan today.   Good luck on Friday.”
