Gwern has come home early from school
Cassie is surprised to see Garry bringing Gwern home from school, thinking that he must be ill;
"A boy in his class said Gwyneth had killed someone"
“He’s been in a fight – a boy in his class told him his mother was a drug dealer, and that she had killed someone,” Garry explains.   Cassie remarks that children can be so cruel, and he admits that he should have told Gwern yesterday.
She appreciates that it is difficult to know what to say, but Garry’s mind seems to be made up;
"The best thing to do is make sure he never sees Gwyneth again!"
“The best thing to do is make sure he never sees Gwyneth again!”
Eileen has been speaking to Kath on the phone
Eileen looks furious as she ends a phone call;
"You'll never guess who that was – Kath Jones!"
“You’ll never guess who that was – Kath Jones!” she growls to Sioned, “She wants to give Penrhewl first refusal on renting the two fields – cheek!
"She steals the fields from us, then wants us to pay her!"
“She steals them from us, and then wants us to pay her!”
Sioned assures her that they will get those fields back, but her mother cannot understand how, pointing out that the solicitor does not seem optimistic.
"Sorry you didn't get a night off at the beginning of the week, Eifion"
When Eifion comes in, Eileen apologises to him that he did not get a night off at the beginning of the week;  he replies that it does not matter, and she goes on that things are very hard round the farm at the moment.
"I'm off next week, anyway"
“I’m off next week, anyway,” he adds,
Thia is news to Sioned and her mother
which comes as a surprise to Eileen and Sioned.
"Jim wrote it down in the diary . . ."
“I’ve got a holiday – I booked it a while back – Jim wrote it down in the diary,” he says, and finds the relevant page.
". . . here it is"
“Here it is – ‘Eifion on holiday’.   Izzy and I are going to Bath for the week.”
Sioned is suspicious
Sioned is immediately suspicious,
"No, I can't change the date"
and he insists that he cannot change the date, although they point out it does not give them long to find cover for him.
“You can do it – you enjoy lambing!” he tells Sioned, “Anyway, I’ve paid for the hotel.”   Eileen is sure that they will not be able to cope without him for a week, but he does not know what else he can say.
As Eileen remarks that things are going from bad to worse,
Sioned is doing some checking
Sioned looks at the diary and then at Eifion;  she seems to have an inkling of what has happened.
Dai removes the poster in the Deri
In the Deri, Dai removes one of the posters advertising Diane’s reading of her book;  Cassie demands what he is doing, and his excuse is, “Under the circumstances, we have to cancel – can you let everyone know?
"With all the drug barons and gangsters around, it's not safe!"
“Diane’s fine, but under the circumstances, with all the drug barons and gangsters around, it’s not safe!”
Cassie replies that it is not that bad,
"Says the woman who lived under the same roof as one of them!"
and he sneers, “Says the woman who lived under the same roof as one of them – don’t tell me you didn’t know!”
"I had no idea about the drugs!'
Cassie rather abruptly informs him that she had no idea, and has told the police all that she knows, but Dai continues, “We’ll be much safer at home, feet up, with the doors locked!”
"Cassie and the customers are safe!"
Garry makes it clear to him that Cassie and the customers are safe;  they will have the Writing Club, Diane will read from her novel, they will have a party, and everyone will be happy.
"You put that poster back up!'
He orders Dai to replace the poster on the wall, and is told, “I hope you’ve got good security here – that’s all I can say!”
"Can you keep an eye on Gwern for an hour?"
Then Garry asks if Cassie can keep an eye on Gwern for an hour, as he needs to sort something out, and stresses that he is doing this for Gwerrn.
Sioned is busy with the laptop
At Penrhewl, Sioned is looking at the laptop when Eifion comes in, remarking that dinner smells nice.
“Have you packed to go away yet?” she asks him,
"Isn't it convenient that Jim isn't here?"
“Isn’t it convenient that Jim isn’t here to say whether he wrote it in the diary?”   Then she shows him what she has found somewhere – the crumpled sheet of paper on which he was practising the handwriting;
"This isn't Jim's writing, is it?"
“This isn’t Jim’s writing, is it?   You did it – you should be ashamed of yourself – forging a dead man’s signature!
"All you care about is taking your girlfriend on holiday"
“We’re grieving and trying to cope, and all you care about is taking your girlfriend on holiday!”
"You've got a strange way of showing it!"
He very unconvincingly alleges that he is grieving as well, and she snarls, “You’ve got a strange way of showing it!   This will break Mam’s heart – she depends on you, Eifion!”
"I offered to be her business partner, but she refused"
He protests that he offered to be her mother’s business partner to help her, but she refused.
Sioned demands,  “Are you surprised?   You have no idea how to run a business –
"We all know that Cadno ran things"
“we all know Cadno ran things when you were here.”
"None of you appreciate me!"
He shouts, “If it wasn’t for me, you wouldn’t have a farm!   None of you appreciate me – not even Jim!   I’m the one out there, farming – what did he do?   Give two fields to flippin’ Kath Jones!”
"Ah, the truth is coming out now!"
Sioned is glad to see that the truth is coming out now;  “You’re sulking because Jim didn’t give you anything – grow up!   Like I said, you’re so selfish.”
He maintains that Jim’s death suits her perfectly;
"Now no-one can stop you influencing your mother"
“Now nobody can stop you influencing your mother – you like taking advantage of weak people!”   She orders him out, and he is very willing to oblige, promising that he will find another job,
"Let's see how you cope without me!"
and they will see how they cannot cope without him.
"Good luck, finding a job with your history!"
“Good luck, finding a job with your history!” she yells at him as he leaves.
Garry waits in the interview room
The camera in the interview room of the police station shows Garry waiting;
"Garry Monk – coming to the station voluntarily!"
DI Davies walks in, commenting, “Garry Monk – coming to the police station voluntarily – I’ve never seen that before!”
"I have some information – but if you're not interested . . ."
Garry smiles and points out, “I have some information, but if you’re not interested . . .”
"Sit down!"
The DI tells him to sit down, and he explains, “I’m here to tell you the history between Gwyneth and this Bethan Price.
"Gwyneth was working for this Bethan Price, selling drugs"
“Gwyneth was working for her, dealing drugs.”
"Why didn't you inform us?"
The DI rebukes him for not mentioning this earlier, but he maintains, “I only found out after they fell out with each other – Gwyneth tried to trick her by cutting the drugs.
"In retaliation, she kidnapped our son, from school"
“In retaliation, Bethan, or Jessie, or whatever you want to call her, kidnapped Gwern, our son – from school.”
"And you didn't report that either"
“And you didn’t report that either,” sighs the DI, but he says he could not take the risk, as if Jessie had found out she would have hurt Gwern.
"She was a dangerous woman"
He stresses that she was a dangerous woman, but realises that he should have told the police before.
"Why are you telling me now?"
“Why are you telling me now?” DI Davies demands,
"I want to make sure she goes to jail for a long time!"
and he replies that he wants to make sure that Gwyneth goes to jail for a long time.
Izzy is getting ready for their trip to Bath
Izzy is packing her case, ready for the weekend, and instructs Eifion when he comes in, to pack more than five pairs of pants and some socks.   She has seen a nice restaurant, and wants him to look smart.
"Sioned twigged that I forged Jim's signature"
He stops her there and advises, “I can’t come – Sioned twigged that I forged Jim’s signature in the diary.”
"Eileen will forgive you if you apologise"
Izzy naïvely asserts that Eileen will forgive him if he apologises,
"Too late – I've resigned!"
but he continues, “It’s too late – I’ve resigned.   I won’t work for anyone who doesn’t appreciate me.   I don’t know where I shall work now – and I don’t care.   Somewhere far away from here – come with me!”
"You're being ridiculous, Eifion!"
When she refuses, he concludes that he will have to go on his own, but she accuses him of being ridiculous, and he walks out of the flat,
Izzy is confused
leaving her somewhat confused.
"Sorry I took so long – I've been down at the station"
In the Deri, Cassie is continuing to read Diane’s novel when Garry returns, and is admonished for taking so long;  “I’m sorry – I’ve been at the police station all afternoon,” he tells her,
"The police want to ask Gwern some questions"
“Would you be willing to do me another favour?   The police want to ask Gwern some questions, and I need you to be present – I can’t be there in case I influence him.”
"Gwern doesn't know anything about the drugs"
Cassie assures him that Gwern does not know anything about the drugs, as Gwyneth kept everything to herself, but agrees to accompany the police upstairs.
Gwern is playing on his iPad
Gwern is playing on his iPad, and is told that Detective Davies wants to ask a few questions;
"Don't be afraid to tell the truth"
Cassie tells him not to be afraid to tell the truth.   “I’m just going to ask a couple of questions,” says the DI,
Gwern is shown a photo of Bethan/Jessie
“Have you seen this woman before?   Perhaps her hair was different then.”
"It's the nurse I saw outside school"
When Gwern sees the photo, he immediately says that she is a nurse;  “I saw her outside school – she told me that Mam had an accident and took me back to her flat.”
"Did she do anything to hurt you?"
He confirms that she was not nasty to him,
"I don't know why she didn't take me to see Mam"
and is not sure why she did not take him to see his mother.
"Thank you – you've been very helpful, Gwern"
The DI thanks him, saying that he has been very helpful.   He asks, “When will Mam be coming home?”
"We're not sure yet when she will come back"
and is told that they are not sure yet;  then he returns to his iPad.
Garry gives Eileen a drink 'on the house'
Eileen is in the Deri, and Garry says that it is nice to see her out and about again;
"Gwern was very brave"
then he asks Cassie how it went, and she reports that he was very brave.   The DI thanks them and leaves,
Diane arrives, with a box of books
just as Dai and Diane are arriving.
"I can't hide in Penrhewl for ever"
Eileen tells Diane that she cannot hide in Penrhewl for ever, and the least she can do is support Diane.
"What will happen if Eileen notices?"
Now Diane is concerned about what will happen if Eileen notices the book is in memory of Jim, but he says she is worrying about nothing.
"Anita said I should reflect the content of the book"
Explaining her unusual attire, Diane says that Anita suggested that she should reflect the content of the book.
"Which of you ladies would like a signed copy?"
Dai is eager to sell some more copies of the book, first tackling Anita and Cassie, but Anita replies that she has already bought one, and thinks she should ask for a discount;
"It's full of errors"
“I’ve only had time to read one chapter – and it’s full of errors,” she complains, but Dai points out
"Well, Siôn was the proof reader"
that Siôn was supposed to check everything, as the proof reader.   He asks that, as a favour to Diane,
"Could you pretend you enjoyed the book?"
they could pretend that they have enjoyed the book, and urges them not to heckle tonight.
Garry is about to call Dani . . .
Garry goes upstairs to the flat, and is about to ring Dani again,
. . . but Gwern comes into the room
but Gwern comes in;
"I'm sorry I couldn't be here when the police were asking questions"
“I’m sorry I couldn’t be there when the police were asking questions,” he says
"Is Mam in jail?"
Gwern immediately asks, “Is Mam in jail?” and Garry answers that she is, that it is not because he talked to the police, but because of a lot of things.   “Are the things Ryan said about her true?” is Gwern’s next question,
"That's what the police are trying to find out"
and he is told that is what the police are trying to find out.   Garry is sorry he did not tell him yesterday,
"Everything will be all right"
but assures him everything will be all right.
“How can you say it will be all right, if Mam doesn’t come back?” he demands, and goes back to his room.
"Listen, Dan, things are difficult here"
Garry again gets out his phone and leaves a message for Dani;  “It’s me again – I hope you and Seren are all right.   Listen, Dan, things are difficult here – please come back –
"I need you – Gwern needs you"
“I need you.   Gwern needs you.”
"'I'll have to punish you for this!' says Maldwyn"
Diane’s reading is in full swing;  “‘I’ll have to punish you for this!’ said Maldwyn, but Dana replied that he is not enough of a man.   Before Dana had time to protest, Maldwyn struck her over and over!   Back on the ship, the other pirates were frightened.”
Now the mermaids are swimming
As she continues droning on about mermaids jumping into the sea and swimming to London, which should have been ‘shelter’,
Cassie does not look exactly enthralled
the audience is becoming restless,
"In Memory of Jim Probert, the Generous Giant"
and Eileen has just discovered that the novel is marked ‘in Memory of Jim’
The reading is disturbed
and drops it on the floor.
"It was my idea – Diane knew nothing about it"
Dai is quick to point out that it was his idea, and Diane knew nothing about it.
Eileen walks out of the Deri,
It appears that someone liked it
and there is half-hearted applause for Diane’s performance.
Eileen returns to the farmhouse
Eileen arrives back at the farmhouse and turns on the kettle;  she sees a note propped up against the teapot,
Eileen opens the letter
and as she opens it, Sioned comes in.     “Have you seen Eifion since this morning?” her mother asks, “He’s left!   He’s resigned!”
"We don't need him – we can cope"
Sioned replies is that they do not need him, and can cope without him,
"What planet are you on, Sioned?"
but Eileen demands what planet she is on;  “We can’t cope with the farm work without him!” but Sioned says they will find someone else.
“By tomorrow?” Eileen rages,
"Selling the place would be best"
“Selling the place would be best – this house was supposed to be the perfect place to raise Huwi, but without Jim, what’s the point?   It’s true – why has Eifion done this?”
Sioned cannot bring herself to explains the reason
Sioned cannot bring herself to tell her mother the truth.
"That didn't go quite as I expected"
Diane groans, “That didn’t go quite as I expected,” but Dai predicts that Eileen will be fine.
"Publishing that novel was a mistake"
“I think publishing that novel was a mistake,” she goes on, “Not many people were impressed with my writing.”
"Did you really mean what you said?"
She goes over to Cassie, wanting an honest answer;  “Did you really mean what you said about my writing?”
"Well, it is your first novel"
She replies that she only finished reading it today, and stresses that it is Diane’s first novel.
“It was better than my first effort, ‘Rose Beween Two Thorns’,” Cassie answers, “What’s important is that you carry on writing, and learn from your mistakes.
"Perhaps we can meet to discuss what you could do differently"
Perhaps we can meet to discuss what are you could do differently next time.”
♫ "Happy birthday to Cassie" ♫
Then they are surprised to see Garry coming to the bar, carrying a birthday cake, and singing, “Happy birthday to Cassie.”
Who is the mysterious hooded figure?
Unnoticed by her, a hooded figure has just come into the Deri.
"It was the least we could do"
Garry says that it was the least he could do for her, especially today:  “You’ve been good to Gwern and me.”
"Yes, happy birthday, Mam!"
Then a voice behind Cassie says, “Yes, happy birthday, Mam!”   The hood is removed to reveal Cassie’s daughter, Mai,
Cassie is astonished
who does not look particularly pleased to see her mother.
