Izzy is still hard at work
Izzy is putting the finishing touches to a string of hearts to decorate the Deri when Aaron returns from school,
"Is everything ready for tonight?"
and asks if everything is ready for tonight.
A card has arrived for Aaron . . .
“A card came for you in the post,” she informs him, and he opens it, to find a large red heart on the front,
. . . and when he reads it . . .
and inside, letters cut from magazines, spelling out ‘Love you millions??’
. . . he jumps to a conclusion (as do so many in Cwmderi)
He has an idea, and with a sly smile slips it into his school bag.
Sioned and Jim are plotting something
Outside Penrhewl, where it is still raining, Sioned hands Jim a cake tin and a bag of decorations;
"Hurry up and finish it"
she urges him to hurry, so that he can finish it, while she keeps a lookout for Eileen.   “Thanks for your help with this,” he says.
Sioned is on sentry duty, watching for her mother
She watches for the approach of her mother.
"I've been busy preparing for tonight"
In the café, Eifion complains that he has not seen much of Izzy this week, and she explains she has been too busy preparing for tonight.   “Well, as this is the only time I’ll spend with my girlfriend today, here you go,” he tells her,
Eifion gives her a present . . .
giving her a present.
. . . . which Izzy discovers is one of her own candles
She finds that it is one of the candles which she has herself made,
"You're busy making them for other people"
and he points out, “You’re so busy making candles for other people, you can’t enjoy them.” She is sorry she has not bought anything for him, but he is not bothered.
"Is this how things are going to be – polite and awkward?"
Jason comes to the counter, and Kelly looks at him rather self-consciously;   he asks for a cappuccino, and she enquires, “Is this is how things are going to be?   Polite – awkward?”
Kelly has sorted things out with Sara
but he hopes not.   “Sara and I have sorted everything, so it would be nice if we made an effort to be ‘fine’,” she suggests,
"We can move on –as friends"
“And to move on – as friends.”
"As a friend, do I get it for free?"
Jason tries his luck;  “As we’re friends, do I get that cappuccino for free?” and she describes that as a nice try.
Jim's heart-shaped cake
At Penrhewl, Jim is has about completed the decoration of his heart-shaped cake, which he has prepared for afternoon tea.   Sioned comes in and warns him to hurry, because Eileen is coming.
"What's going on here?"
Eileen immediately suspects that something is going on,
Jim presents Eileen with a red rose
and is delighted to see what Jim has prepared for her – and even gives her a red rose, as he wishes her, “Happy Valentine’s Day!”
She knew that they were up to something, maintaining that they have been like naughty children all day, and assumes that this was all Sioned’s idea.   She replies, “It was nothing to do with me,”
"I made the cake in the flat"
and Jim explains that he made the cake in the flat.
"I'm taking Huwi for a walk"
Sioned is going to take Huwi for a walk, so they can ensure you their afternoon tea.   Eileen and Jim express their love for each other.
A rather indeterminate pattern on the top
Kelly brings Jason his cappuccino, and he wonders what exactly is the design she has made on the top.
"I thought a heart might be inappropriate"
“Well, I was going to make a heart shape – but then I thought it might be . . . inappropriate,
"Turn your head to the side and squint a little"
“so, if you turn your head to the side and squint a little – it might, sort of, look like a . . .”
"It's a frog, Kelly!"
Jason correctly interprets it to resemble a frog,
"Yes, not a heart"
and is very impressed by Kelly’s efforts.
"Just checking what time you want me tonight"
Aaron comes into the café, and tells Izzy he just wants to check what time he is required tonight.   She replies that it should be about six,
Aaron's action is not sufficiently covert
and Aaron leans down, not surreptitiously enough, to slip something into her bag.
"Your hand was in Izzy's bag!"
Eifion demands what he is doing;  “Your hand was in Izzy’s bag – what have you taken?”
Eifion removes the card
Eifion picks up her bag, and asks if there is anything missing from it;  he takes out the card, and hands it to Izzy.
"It's lovely, Aaron!"
She reads, “Love you millions too ??” and thanks him, saying its is lovely.
"She's far too old for you!"
However, Eifion will not let the matter rest, and stresses, “She’s almost your sister – and she’s far too old for you!”
Aaron cannot  get out of the café quickly enough
Aaron rushes out of the café in embarrassment, and Izzy berates Eifion for what he said.
Already in a furious mood . . .
When Aaron arrives home, he is very depressed, and slams the fridge door;  then his phone sounds,
. . . Aaron then finds that his mother sent him the card
and he discovers a text from his mother, asking if he got her card.   He is exasperated.
Ffion's and Rhys' quiet meal is about to be disturbed
Ffion and Rhys are in Tapas, when Hywel and Gaynor also arrive;
"Everyone's celebrating St Valentine's Day then?"
“Everyone’s celebrating Valentine’s Day, then,” Hywel comments, and Ffion remarks that the romantic gene must run in the family.
"We're going away for a day next week"
Rhys reveals that his ‘proper’ present for Ffion is going away for a night next week, and, not to be outdone, Hywel maintains that he was thinking of doing something similar as a surprise.   “Well, as its half term – I’m not telling you where we’re going,” he tells Gaynor,
Hywel can do better than that
“But I didn’t think it was worth going for one night – I thought we’d go for two or three.”
"Once the prices have dropped again, is it?"
“Once the prices have dropped again, after the weekend, is it, Hywel?” is Ffion’s explanation for this.   He wants to join them for a drink before they go to the Deri, but Ffion suggests, “You don’t want to be with us on your romantic night.”
"Izzy has virtually forced me to go to the Deri tonight!"
Rhys says that he has been forced by Izzy to go to the Deri later – to the Antur’s Valentine’s Night;
Ffion does not want to go
Ffion does not look particularly pleased by the prospect.
"Aaron – you should have been at the Deri half an hour ago!"
Izzy knocks on Aaron’s bedroom door and reminds him that he was supposed to have been at the Deri half an hour ago.
"Please don't feel ashamed about the card"
“Please don’t feel ashamed about that card – I love it – it shows that your family means a lot to you.”   From inside the room, a voice tells her to go away, but she continues that he should not be worried about Eifion;
"Eifion's an idiot!"
“He’s an idiot, probably sulking because no-one sent him a card – including me!   Aaron, please, I need your help –people are starting to arrive at the Deri – there’s heavy metal music playing and I don’t know how to change it!   Please, I need your help!” she begs.
The Deri has laid on the food, delivered by an unknown barman
At the Deri, where the food is being laid out, Brenda and Iori are getting into the spirit of things,
Dancing with a walking stick must be rather awkward
and they start dancing.   Aaron has obviously been persuaded, and comes in with Izzy, who says that someone must have fixed the playlist.
"You may as well stay, in case it happens again"
“You may as well stay, in case it happens again,” she tells him.
"Watch what you say tonight, Eifion!"
She also warns Eifion to watch what he says, or there will be no romance for him tonight.
Izzy points out this is a private event
Izzy approaches Brenda and Iori, and points out that this is a private event – tickets only;  “If you haven’t got tickets, I want those headbands and specs back, and you’ll have to leave.”
They accuse Izzy of being 'singlist' and 'ageist'
Brenda says that it is a disgrace if she cannot come to her local and enjoy a drink with her friend;  “Is it because I’m single?   You can’t do that!   There’s a law against it – it’s ‘singlist’ and ‘ageist’!”
"No ticket – no entry!"
Iori even describes it as a hate crime, but Izzy is unmoved, insisting that no ticket mean no entry.
Iori eventually pays up
Iori gets out his wallet and purchases two tickets;  he informs Brenda, “She said the headbands and the glasses are included in the price, didn’t she?”
They collect as many headbands and glasses as possible
and they proceed to gather up as many as they can find.
Sara is all on her own this Valentine's night . . .
Kelly has discovered a note from Sara, explaining that she is with Dylan tonight, and hopes that Kelly will enjoy the peace and quiet.
. . . and does not know what to do with herself . . .
Kelly looks into the fridge.
. . . coincidentally, Jason is in much the same position
Meanwhile, Jason is watching television at Bryntirion, but does not seem to be able to find an interesting channel.
Kelly decides to go to the Deri
Likewise, Kelly is not impressed by the television offerings, and, around the same time, they both decide that they are going out.
"I'm going out for a pint, Mam!"
Jason shouts to his mother upstairs, “I’m going out for a pint!   I’ll see you later.”
Kelly picks up her keys and puts on her coat, ready to leave the flat.
The evening is in full swing
In the Deri, Izzy is selling more of her candles, and Aaron is in charge of the music.
Rhys pays Izzy
When Gaynor comes in, she compliments Izzy on the decorations;  Hywel and Rhys go to the bar.   Izzy asks all those present to form teams of two;  “And remember, you don’t have to be in the same team as the person you arrived with.”
Kelly immediately wants to go
When Kelly comes in, she takes one look at what is going on, and turns to leave again;  Izzy says that it will be fun, but Kelly responds, “I’d rather stick pins in my eyes, like!”
Jason had forgotten it was St Valentine's Day
Jason had also forgotten that it was St Valentine’s Day,
"You don't have to be a real couple"
but they are encouraged by Brenda, “You don’t have to be a real couple – I’m in a team with Iori!”
"There's no other way to get a drink tonight"
Kelly concludes that there does not appear to be any other way of getting a drink tonight, and Jason says he is game if she is.   They purchase two tickets from Izzy.
“I was hoping to have a quiet drink tonight,” Kelly moans, and Jason asks if she does not have any wine in the flat.
Jason seems to warm to the idea of a limerick
As Izzy informs everyone the first task is to write a limerick, the first line of which is ‘There were two shy lovers from Cwmderi’,
"Shoot me – shoot me now!"
Kelly mutters, “Shoot me – shoot me now!”
Jim and Eileen enjoy their afternoon tea
At Penrhewl, Jim and Eileen are enjoying their afternoon tea in front of the fire, and Jim is very happy with the cake he has made;  “I was worried about making you a cake, because you’re such a good baker –
"I think that cake's as good as yours!"
“but I think it’s as good as yours!”
“You’ve learned something from me over the years, then,” Eileen replies, and he says that today has been a good day.   He is confident that there will be more days like today, and he apologises about yesterday, admitting that he was wrong – but he could not see it.
"Promise you'll always tell me the truth"
He adds, “I know it’s hard, but I want you to promise me one thing – that you’ll always tell me the truth.
"Don't pretend that everything's fine"
“If I get confused, I don’t want you to pretend everything’s fine – I want you to tell me if I’m wrong.   I don’t know about you, but I’m going to have another piece of cake.
"Do you want another piece of cake?"
“Do you want some?”
She replies, “No – it’s a bit . . . dry –
"You wanted me to tell the truth!"
see, you wanted me to tell the truth!”
What are 'curry' and 'slurry' doing in a romantic poem?
Izzy announces that there are only two minutes left to finish their limericks, and Iori comes up with curry rhyming with slurry,
There is some difference of opinion about Hywel's last line
while Gaynor points out to Hywel that his proposed line does not scan,
"That's not right, Gaynor"
but he will not accept her suggested replacement.
"That's not how they speak in Cwmderi"
Rhys rejects what Ffion has thought of as being ‘North Walian’ and not how they speak in Cwmderi;
She is now quite enjoying the evening
after being reluctant to come, she is now quite enjoying the evening.
"Wearing nothing but his wellies!"
Jason comes up with the line, “Wearing nothing but his wellies!” and Kelly accuses him of having a weird sense of humour.
"I don't want my name in a limerick!"
She objects when his next line ends with ‘Kelly’ and makes it quite clear she does not want her name in a limerick.
"Who's this Kerry, then?"
He changes it to ‘Kerry’, and enthuses that Kerry is lovely;
"She's hot – and likes wearing wellies!"
“She’s hot, and likes wearing wellies!”   Izzy decrees that the time is up, and they should bring over their entries,
"That's enough poetry for one night – I'm going home"
but Kelly decides that she has had enough poetry for one night, and she is going home. Jason agrees that it is about time that he also should be going back, and cannot envisage their limerick winning, anyway.
"I don't want anyone thinking that Kelly likes wellies!"
Kelly instructs him. “Take the paper away with you, because I don’t want anyone thinking that Kelly likes wellies.”
"Thanks for your help tonight, Aaron"
Izzy thanks Aaron for his help tonight, and says that he has been ‘fab’.   She pays him, but initially he is reluctant to accept it.   She is insistent, as he has done a good job,
"I'm saving up to buy something really special"
and he says he is saving up to buy something really special.
"I didn't think you'd walk me all the way into the flat"
Kelly and Jason arrive back at the café flat;  “When you said you were going to walk me home, I didn’t think you’d actually walk me all the way into the flat,” she says,
"I'm a gentleman, Kelly"
but he points out that he is a gentleman, and stresses that she is safely home.
"Would it be all right if I gave you a good night cwtch?"
He wishes her good night, but when he reaches the top of the stairs, he wonders, “Do you think it would be all right if I gave you a good night cwtch – as a friend –
"Friends sometimes do that, don't they?"
“because friends do that sometimes, don’t they?”
"Why not?"
She agrees that does frequently happen;  “So why not?”
Jason embraces her
and they do indeed cwtch.
"Am I permitted to give you a good night kiss – as friends?"
He further enquires whether he might be permitted to give her a good night kiss, as friends, because people do that as well – on the cheek.
“On the continent,” he continues, “Even the boys kiss each other on the cheek in France –
"Just here, on the cheek – OK?"
“so I’m just going to  – here, OK?   Are you ready?”
At exactly the right moment, she turns her head
However, when he kisses her, she turns her head, and the kiss develops into something else;
"Oops!"
“Oops!” Kelly comments;
There is a repeat performance . . .
then they do it again,
. . . then Jason's jacket is discarded . . .
and he discards his jacket.
. . . and they head towards the bedroom
Kelly leads him towards the bedroom.
