"What should I wear? This one . . ." |
When Mathew comes into the shop flat, Rhys asks for advice on what he should wear, “This . . .
![]() |
". . . or this one?" |
“or this?” Mathew replies that it depends on the occasion, and hopes that it does not involve Abi and Gwen. “I’m going to meet them – to meet Gwen,” says Rhys.
![]() |
"So suddenly?" |
“I knew you were thinking about it, but so suddenly?” Mathew demands,
![]() |
"I don't call 12 years 'sudden'!" |
but Rhys does not regard twelve years as sudden. The next question is, “Will Lois be going with you?”
“You know what the situation is,” replies Rhys,
![]() |
"Lois is Gwen's mother" |
and it is pointed out to him that Lois is Gwen’s mother. “Why does it always have to be about Lois?
![]() |
"Gwen is my daughter, too" |
“Gwen is my daughter, too – everyone seems to forget that.”
![]() |
"Cup of tea and a couple of hours in bed" |
DJ and Sioned come into the farmhouse as he groans, “All I want is a cup of tea and a couple of hours back in bed!”
![]() |
"Make me some toast" |
Sioned wants him to make her some toast,
![]() |
Sioned has a shock |
and then suddenly shrieks in terror,
![]() |
Someone is on their sofa |
as she sees a stranger asleep on the sofa. (It appears that they have not noticed the broken window from the previous episode.)
![]() |
He picks up a chair |
The man, who we see is the fugitive from Deri Fawr, is equally terrified and backs away from them, picking up a chair to defend himself. “He was at Deri Fawr!” Sioned shouts, “I’ll phone John.” However, the man seems even more scared to hear that name, so she tries to calm things down.
![]() |
"I'm Sioned" |
She indicates by sign language that she is Sioned and points across to DJ;
![]() |
"Alaz" |
the stranger says that he is, “Alaz.” She continues, falteringly, to ask if he wants some food,
![]() |
"Food – please" |
which he calls, “Xurek – ji kerema xwe.” [Food –please] DJ wonders what she is doing,
![]() |
"Look, DJ, he's starving!" |
and she points out that the boy is starving.
![]() |
DJ has misgivings about him |
Alaz puts down the chair, as he finds that Sioned is a friend, but DJ is still looking suspicious.
![]() |
"Don't you think you should wait?" |
Mathew goes on, “I know you want to see Gwen, but don’t you think you should wait until she’s older?”
![]() |
"She asked to see me" |
Rhys makes it clear that she asked to see him, and that Abi will be there, too. “Wouldn’t it be safer to go through the official channels, in case?” Mathew asks.
However, Rhys is determined; “I’m going to meet her, and you’re not going to stop me!”
![]() |
"Take off that jacket – you look like a vicar!" |
Mathew advises him to take off that jacket, as he looks like a vicar, and wishes him good luck as he leaves.
![]() |
"You can pick up the taps" |
Then Mathew’s phone sounds and he finds that it is Lois; “Yes, great – you can pick up the taps at the same time,”
![]() |
He does not mention Rhys |
and he almost adds something, but thinks better of it.
![]() |
APD has secured another job |
Jason comes into APD and informs Anita, “The head of Tai Teifi Shelter wants us to go with the tender.” She is pleased to hear that,
![]() |
"The way things are going, we shall need it" |
and says that the way things are going, they will need the money, as £50 has now disappeared from the till.
![]() |
"Who would help themselves from the till?" |
Jason cannot understand it; “Who would help themselves from the till?”
![]() |
"Well, you know what I think" |
and she reiterates who she thinks is responsible. At that moment Lois comes in to collect the items for the worksite,
![]() |
"There's money missing from the till" |
and Jason rather awkwardly mentions the missing money from the till. “Anita has been through the books, doing the accounts, and . . .”
![]() |
"And you think it was me!" |
“And you think it was me!” growls Lois, but he denies that is what he is thinking,
![]() |
"Anta suggested it" |
but that Anita has suggested it. “Izzy had itchy fingers so I must be a thief too!” she assumes,
![]() |
"I'm not staying where people don't trust me!" |
“I’m not staying where people don’t trust me! Anita’s quick to point the finger – perhaps you should ask why!” and she storms off.
![]() |
Anita comes back in |
Anita has been keeping out of the way during this exchange,
![]() |
"Thanks for your input, Anita" |
and Jason thanks her for her input.
![]() |
"There's nothing wrong with his stomach" |
At Penrhewl, Alaz is ravenously eating and drinking; DJ remarks that there is nothing wrong with his stomach, but is told to be quiet by Sioned.
![]() |
"Thank you" |
“Sipas dekem,” [Thank you] says Alaz, so Sioned attempts to get some more information from him.
![]() |
"John Deri Fawr" |
“John – Deri Fawr,” she begins,
![]() |
The name strikes terror into him" |
but this obviously causes distress, so she concludes that something is not right.
![]() |
"He can't speak English, let alone Welsh" |
DJ comments that John said he was his sister’s friend’s son, but Sioned replies that he cannot even speak English, let alone Welsh. She thinks for a moment,
![]() |
"I am from Wales" |
then picks up a tea towel, emblazoned with the word ‘Cymru’ and indicates that she is Welsh.
![]() |
"Kurdish" |
Alaz gets the message and says that he is Kurdish.
“Do you think John’s sister knows Kurdish people?” asks Sioned, cynically,
![]() |
"He couldn't wait to get out of that shed" |
“I don’t know how he ended up at Deri Fawr, but he couldn’t wait to get out of that shed.
Again she tries by sign language to get more information, but as soon as the name John is mentioned, Alaz becomes panic-stricken,
![]() |
"Twp! Twp!" |
and repeats the word, “Twp! Twp!” [Welsh for idiot, which is how he must have been described multiple times by John]
![]() |
He shows the bruises on his body |
He shows them bruises on his body, again saying, “Twp!”
![]() |
"I've finished the books you gave me" |
Arwen and Gwern come into the bookshop, where she asks Siôn for more books; “I’ve finished the ones you gave me.” He says that she reads quickly and must take after her grandfather.
![]() |
"This is a good novel" |
He recommends a good novel, and then Gwern enquires if he has coloured his beard,
![]() |
"It's a bit pink" |
noticing that it is a bit pink.
![]() |
"What's that noise?" |
As Siôn is about to describe the novel, there is a strange rumbling noise, which appears to be initiated by a device which Gwern is holding. The humming happens again,
![]() |
"Must be interference from somewhere" |
and Siôn is sure that electrical interference is coming from somewhere. “I thought a bookshop was supposed to be quiet,” Arwen comments, and they run out of the shop,
![]() |
Then the pair of them run off |
much to Siôn’s annoyance.
![]() |
We are unmistakably in Cardiff Bay |
The scene changes to Cardiff Bay, with the red Pierhead Building in the background,
![]() |
Rhys sits, waiting for Abi and Gwen . . . |
as Rhys sits in a restaurant, waiting for the arrival of Abi and Gwen (or more correctly, Olivia).
![]() |
. . . rather anxiously |
He appears rather anxious,
![]() |
Then he sees them coming |
but then the two of them appear, and he psyches himself up for the meeting.
![]() |
"This is Olivia" |
Abi introduces Olivia to him, and he rather awkwardly says, “It’s lovely to meet you.”
![]() |
She smiles at Rhys |
His daughter smiles at him.
![]() |
"Lois!" |
Mathew follows Lois along the street and she turns,
![]() |
"Don't pretend that you don't know!" |
snarling, “Don’t pretend that you don’t know!”
He assumes that Rhys has told her about where he has gone, and she continues, “You’ve told him as well, have you? Just because Izzy stole, you can’t accuse the whole family!”
![]() |
Mathew is lost here |
Mathew is at a loss to know what she is talking about, so she advises him,
![]() |
"Talk to your staff before the accuse people!" |
“Talk to your staff before they go around accusing more people!” and she stalks off.
![]() |
Jason is approaching |
Jason is approaching so Mathew demands what that was all about;
![]() |
"Someone's been stealing from the till again" |
“Someone’s been stealing money from the till again – I was going to tell you, but I wanted to make sure first.”
![]() |
"And you accused Lois?" |
Mathew is furious that Lois was accused, but Jason puts that down to,
![]() |
"If not Lois, who is it?" |
“A misunderstanding with Anita. The thing is, someone has been stealing – and if it isn’t Lois, who is it?”
![]() |
"I hope you're OK with blueberries" |
It is strange to hear Rhys speaking in English; “I hope you’re OK with blueberries – that’s all they had,” and Abi says that she loves blueberries – any kind of superfood.
“Me too – like to keep healthy, running and stuff,” says Rhys,
![]() |
"All kinds" |
and apparently Olivia is great at sports, so he asks which is her favourite and she answers that she likes all kinds.
![]() |
"She's on the school football team" |
Abi says that she is on the school football team;
![]() |
"Next time we'll have a kick-about" |
“Right, next time we’ll have to have a kick-about, OK?” he says.
Then Abi’s phone sounds, and as she goes to answer it,
![]() |
"Is Lois coming?" |
Olivia asks, “Is Lois coming?” Rhys replies that she couldn’t make it, which causes some disappointment, so he adds that he is sure she would really like to next time.
![]() |
"I thought taking her shopping would help" |
Meanwhile, Abi is saying, “Yes, I know, Mum, but she’s been really quiet recently, so I thought taking her shopping might help. Sorry, I should have told you – she seems a lot happier.
![]() |
"Lois might come next time" |
When Abi returns to the table, Olivia tells her that Lois said that she might come next time, and smiles at her father.
![]() |
"Look, Sioned – he can't stay here!" |
At Penrhewl, DJ makes it quite clear that Alaz cannot stay there,
![]() |
"He can't go back to John, either" |
but Sioned insists he cannot go back to John either; “He was being kept in a shed, DJ! You saw those bruises.”
![]() |
"He's wearing my jumper!" |
Alaz comes back in after having had a wash, and DJ complains, “He’s wearing my jumper!” Sioned maintains that it looks better on him than on DJ. He is tired of this; “Enough of the diplomatics – I’m calling the police,”
![]() |
Alaz disappears upstairs again |
but before he can do anything, there is a loud banging on the door and Alaz escapes rapidly upstairs.
![]() |
"Where have you hidden him, then?" |
John Deri Fawr bursts in; “Right, come on, then – where have you hidden him?” he snarls, and Sioned says she has no idea who he means. “Don’t playing games with me, good girl – you know exactly!” he continues, “My farmhand – the one you were worried about the other day!”
![]() |
"Why would I want to steal your farmhand?" |
“Why would I want to steal your farmhand?” she demands, and he maintains that is what she is like.
![]() |
"You can't accuse her like that!" |
DJ intervenes to point out that he cannot march in and accuse Sioned like that.
![]() |
"She's more than happy to creep around my farm!" |
“Why not? She is more than happy to creep around my farm!” rages John,
![]() |
"Where did he come from, then?" |
but Sioned asks where he came from.
“He’s my cousin’s son,” is the angry answer, so she considers it odd that he has run away, in that case. She wonders if he has phoned his cousin or the police,
![]() |
"I'll call the police for you" |
and offers to do that herself, but he does not want that, arguing that there is no need, because he is sure that the runaway will turn up.
![]() |
"If I find out he was here all along . . ." |
“If I find out that he was here all along . . .” John begins, but then walks out of the farmhouse.
![]() |
"He's such an idiot" |
In the Deri flat, Arwen tells Gwern, “He’s my grandfather, but he’s such an idiot!”
![]() |
They laugh at Siôn's confusion |
as they talk about their fun with the device.
![]() |
"Are you going to share the joke?" |
Cassie comes upstairs for her break and wonders if they are going to share the joke, but Arwen replies that they were discussing school work.
![]() |
"Whatever's that?" |
Then Cassie hears that peculiar humming sound,
![]() |
"Is it coming from the kettle?" |
and imagines that it comes from the kettle, or possibly the lamp.
“Can you help me with my homework?” asks Arwen, but Cassie points out that she was not very good at school; then the noise starts again, but Cassie is becoming suspicious.
![]() |
"Do you have five minutes, Cassie?" |
Matthew arrives and wonders if Cassie has five minutes for a chat;
![]() |
The children make a quick retreat |
Arwen and Gwern decide to make themselves scarce, but Cassie was under the impression they needed help with homework. They seem keen to go.
![]() |
"It's a sensitive matter, to be honest" |
“It’s a sensitive matter, to be honest,” Mathew admits.
![]() |
"Would you like another smoothie?" |
At Cardiff Bay, Rhys asks if they would like another smoothie, or some lunch, but they will have to go soon.
![]() |
"What was she like at school?" |
Olivia is anxious to know, “What was she like at school?”
![]() |
"She was lovely and gentle, like you" |
and all that Rhys can come up with is to say that she was lovely, and gentle like Olivia.
He confesses that was a bit of a lad,
![]() |
"Why didn't you stay together?" |
but Olivia goes on, “Was she in love with you? Why didn’t you stay together?”
![]() |
"We were young" |
He replies that they were young, and Abi explains that it is not that simple,
![]() |
"We shall miss our train" |
and in any case they had really better go, or they will miss their train.
![]() |
"Was she sad when she gave me away?" |
Olivia will not be silenced, wanting to know, “Was she sad when she gave me away?” and Rhys knows that she was;
![]() |
"Can we meet up again?" |
he asks if they can meet up again,
![]() |
"Will Lois come next time?" |
and Olivia is anxious that Lois should come next time.
He finds this question difficult to answer,
![]() |
Rhys takes photos of Olivia |
but says, “I’ll do my best – do you mind if I take a photo before you go?” and Olivia is pleased to agree.
![]() |
"Bye" |
Then they leave for the station
![]() |
Rhys has a lot to think about |
and Rhys looks very thoughtful.
![]() |
"Don't you trust me, or what?" |
In the Deri, Anita objects to there being an audit; “Don’t you trust me, or what?” she growls.
![]() |
"I just want Cassie to double-check it" |
Mathew says that he just wants Cassie to double-check it,
![]() |
"Let him do it, Anita" |
and Jason encourages Anita to let him do it.
![]() |
"It's not your work that's being criticised!" |
“It’s not your work that’s being criticised!” she rages, “And I have a lot more experience than Cassie!”
“I just want to make sure no-one’s stealing, before I accuse anyone, Mathew insists; but Anita is quite adamant that someone is, and is also stealing his stock.
![]() |
"Don't expect me in tomorrow!" |
“But if you’re not happy with my work, don’t expect me in tomorrow!” she roars, slams down her key on the bar, and flounces out.
![]() |
"I'll go, Mathew " |
Jason will follow her and try to calm her down.
![]() |
He seems a lot happier now |
Alaz is looking at something on the laptop and is laughing;
![]() |
"What are we going to do next?" |
DJ wants to know what they are going to do next. “If he’s a refugee, we have to call the authorities,” he reminds Sioned,
![]() |
"I want to find out what the situation is" |
but she wants to find out what the situation is before they do anything.
“There must be some charities that can help us,” she insists, but DJ says they do not know anything about him,
![]() |
"He could kill us in our sleep" |
and that he could kill them in their sleep. “Look at him – he’s been abused by our neighbour – and who knows who else,” she says,
![]() |
"Just one night, that's all?" |
“Just one night, that’s all, right? To show that we’re not all like John, at least.”
![]() |
"I'm sorry about what happened earlier" |
Lois is walking past the bus stop and heads towards the Deri, where Mathew is just coming out. “I’m sorry about what happened earlier,” he tells her, “I had no idea.”
![]() |
"I felt as if no-one trusted me" |
She says that she felt as if no-one trusted her, and he asks if she will come back to work;
![]() |
"You need someone with tidy plumbing skills" |
“I might as well – you need someone with tidy plumbing skills,” she answers,
![]() |
"Yes, Tyler's not a natural plumber" |
and Mathew concedes that Tyler is not a natural plumber.
“I loved Izzy but it’s not easy being her sister, even now,” Lois sighs, “But there we are – every family has something.”
![]() |
Rhys is back from his assignation |
Rhys has arrived back in the village and approaches them. Mathew will see Lois in work tomorrow and leaves the two of them together.
![]() |
"Being honest with each other is the important thing" |
“Rhys, what I said about being friends – I’m glad you’re OK with that,” she tells him, “As you said, being honest with each other is the important thing,” and as she goes along the street,
![]() |
He looks at the photos on his phone |
he takes out his phone and looks at the photos of Olivia.
