22 January 2020 (2nd)

Jaclyn lies motionless in her hospital bed . . .
In the hospital, Jaclyn is still lying motionless,
. . . then she removes her oxygen mask . . .
and Guto has fallen asleep by her bedside;  she begins to stir and removes the oxygen mask from her face.
. . . and speaks Guto's name
She whispers her son’s name,
At last, his mother is awake
and he suddenly realises, with amazement, that his mother is awake.
"Something is not quite right with Jim"
At Bryntirion, Jason tells Dai that something is not quite right with Jim;  “He just accepted the sack!” but Dai points out that he did not have much choice, with Debbie going on about compensation.
"We're up to our ears in work, Dai!"
“We’re up to our ears in work,” Jason reminds him, “Mathew and I work late every night – can’t you just ask him nicely to come back?   We need staff, especially now that Mam is off!”
"I know I'm letting people down"
His mother has just walked into the room and acknowledges that she is letting people down,
"There's no need to rush back to work, Mam!"
but Jason assures her that there is no need to rush to come back to APD.   She admits, “I’m not ready to come back to work – not yet,
"I want to pop to the village this morning"
“but I do want to pop to the village this morning.”   Dai regards this as a good sign, and she continues that she will have breakfast in the café.
"Like a full English, but a lot nicer!"
“We’ll have a full Welsh!” says Dai, and explains to Jason, “Like a full English, but a lot nicer!”
"Ifan will be fine, Sara!"
Dylan tries to reassure Sara that Ifan will be fine, but she stresses that they do not know that;  “The waiting is the difficult part,” he says, and she realises that it is the same with him and Jaclyn.
Both of them are off their food
Neither of them want anything to eat,
"Mam's awake and has been talking this morning"
and then a message arrives on Dylan’s phone;  he plays it to Sara.   She hears Guto’s voice, explaining, “Hi, Uncle Dyl – Mam’s awake – and she’s been talking this morning, so Dad, Tes and Mam-gu are all on their way over.   She seems OK!   She’s still a bit weak and tired, but she smiled at me and said my name!   Come over when you get a chance.”
Dylan does not look particularly enthused
Sara regards that as excellent news, but Dylan does not seem to share her enthusiasm;
"I'm going straight to the hospital"
he says he will get his shoes and go straight to the hospital.   Nevertheless, Sara is still anxious about Ifan.
Gwen is on duty again this morning
Down in the café, where Dai and Diane have just arrived, Gwen is serving Eifion,
"Is Jim all right?"
and Dai asks him how Jim is;  then tries to change the subject, wondering if Eifion has heard any more about Jaclyn.
"Colin saw the family going to the hospital"
“Colin said he saw the family going to the hospital in the car, but he didn’t get a chance to talk to them,” Eifion replies.
"She's gone, hasn't she?"
Of course, Diane immediately assumes, “She’s gone, hasn’t she?”
"Don't get ahead of yourself, Diane"
but Dai urges her not to get ahead of herself, and Eifion says that it may be good news.   Diane has now lost her appetite, and wants to go home.
"I only want coffee"
Dai pleads with her to sit down and have a full breakfast, but she will only agree to have some coffee, so Dai orders a coffee and a full Welsh from Gwen.
The family arrive . . .
Guto advises his mother that the rest of the family have arrived, and she actually waves to them as they approach;
. . . and are all overjoyed
they are overjoyed to see her awake again, and Tesni is getting quite emotional.
"You take your time, Jacs"
Gerwyn tells Jaclyn to take her time recovering, as she does not have to rush.
A selfie for Tesni's boyfriend
Tesni wants to take a selfie with her mother, to send to her boyfriend;
"I'm back with Mathew"
“I’m back with Mathew, and he sends his regards,” she says.
The nurse says that Jaclyn is very popular
A nurse comes in and tells Jaclyn that she is a popular woman.
Jaclyn gives Tesni the 'thumbs up'
The family will retire to the canteen for a coffee, though Brenda would prefer something stronger as they are celebrating.
"You mustn't overreact, Diane!"
In the café, Dai advises that if it is bad news from the hospital, Diane must not overreact;  “That’s easy for you to say!” she grumbles, but he reminds her that they do not know what the situation is.
"Is there any news, Dylan?"
Dylan comes downstairs from the flat, and Dai asks if there is any news.
"Jaclyn has spoken for the first time"
“I’m on my way to the hospital – Jaclyn has spoken for the first time, to Guto,” Dylan informs them,
"Give her our regards"
and they are both very relieved to hear it.
“What did I tell you?   You were getting ahead of yourself!” comments Dai, “Things are finally getting better, Diane.”
"She might never be the same"
She replies that they have no idea how Jaclyn is, and that she might never be the same.”
Dylan enters Jaclyn's hospital room
Some time later, Dylan arrives at the hospital and goes into Jaclyn’s room, where she is still alone;  “I’ve been so worried about you,” he says, and she knows exactly why he was worried.
"How much do you remember?"
He asks how much she remembers about what happened,
"Everything – and I shall tell the police that!"
and is alarmed when she replies, “Everything – and I’m going to tell the police everything.”
The family return, and Dylan beats a hasty retreat
At that moment the rest of the family return, and Dylan thanks Guto for contacting him;  Brenda is surprised that Dylan is leaving already, giving the rather inadequate excuse that it is all a bit too much for him.
Gerwyn smells a rat
Gerwyn is wearing a puzzled look, and his mother did not know that Dylan was such a wimp.   When Guto wants to go and check if Dylan is all right,
"No – stay with me, love"
his mother tells him not to, but rather to stay with her.
"I was rash and impatient – and I'm sorry!"
At Penrhewl, Dai insists, “I was rash and impatient – and I’m sorry!” which Jim thinks is very unlike Dai.
"It was a misunderstanding"
When Eileen comes in, Jim informs her that Dai sacked him yesterday, but Dai prefers to call it, “A misunderstanding – I’ve come round to say sorry, and offer him his job back.”
"Thanks – but no thanks!"
Jim thanks him for this offer, but adds, “No thanks,”
Dai is confused
which leaves Dai very confused.   Jim continues, “I don’t want to work for APD any more – you were right to sack me –
"Anyway, I don't care!"
“and anyway, I don’t care!”
"I'm not leaving until you agree to come back"
Dai makes it quite clear that he is not leaving the house until Jim agrees to come back, as they need him;  Jim and Eileen look at each other,
"What's going on here?"
and Dai wonders what is going on.   “You can’t be punishing me for having an off day yesterday?” he says.
"There's something you need to know . . ."
Jim announces, “There’s something you need to know,”
". . . I've got dementia"
and as Eileen goes to stand by his side, he continues, “I’ve got dementia.”
Dai cannot believe it
Dai is, at first, speechless, but then incredulous.   Jim goes on, “That’s why I don’t want my job back – there’s no telling how I would behave or what I’d do.
"I could be a complete embarrassment for APD"
“I could be a complete embarrassment for APD.”
Dai protests that people his age do not get dementia;
"You're just a bit forgetful – like the rest of us"
“You’re just a bit forgetful at times – like the rest of us!”   Jim reveals that he was diagnosed before Christmas, and definitely does have dementia.
"It's not all bad – well, not yet, anyway"
“It’s not all bad – well, not yet, anyway,” he adds, and Dai is lost for words.
They return to number 10
Gerwyn and the family arrive back at number 10, and Guto is encouraged to go to bed and get some sleep, but he insists,
Guto is just pleased that his mother is OK
“I’m fine – I’m just so glad that Mam’s OK.”
"Your Mam was a bit negative about  Uncle Dyl"
His father thinks that Jaclyn was negative about Uncle Dyl, but is told not to start on about that again;  “It’s a relief that Mam is better – that’s what is important!”
"Fish and chips for dinner tonight!"
Brenda proposes that they have fish and chips tonight to celebrate.
"It took guts to tell Dai"
“It took guts to tell Dai,” Eileen says, “I’m very proud of you.”   Jim answers that it was the only way to shut him up, and she enquires about what happened yesterday.
"I was less careful than usual"
He is not sure;  “I was less careful than usual – I didn’t screw the brackets in properly.”   She remarks that everyone makes mistakes, but he knows that it was bound to happen some time;
"It could happen here – you know that, don't you?"
“It could happen here – you know that, don’t you?”
"We must tell Eifion"
They agree that they must tell Eifion, as it makes sense.
"I could do with some help on this job"
Round the back of APD, Jason is loading up the van, and stresses, “I could do with some help on this job, Dai, if Jim is around.”
"You didn't go over there, did you?"
Noticing Dai’s glum expression, he assumes, “You didn’t go over there, did you?   Did you get cold feet?”
"Jim thinks it's a good time to stop"
On the contrary, Dai declares that he did go over there;  “Listen, Jim’s been thinking, and he’s decided now is a good time to stop.”
"He should work a month's notice, at least"
Jason maintains that he should work a month’s notice at least.   “That would be difficult, after I sent him packing!” Dai rages, and he forbids Jason to go over and talk to him.
"Look, he's not getting any younger"
“Look, he’s very busy on the farm – and he’s not getting any younger,” Dai points out;  Jason replies that none of them are getting younger.
"I was mixing cement in my sleep last night!"
He is serious that they need someone to replace Jim;  “I was mixing cement in my sleep last night!” he recalls.
Dai is deep in thought
Dai appears to be giving the matter some serious thought.
"Old age is creeping up on me"
Eifion comes into the farmhouse, complaining about how cold it is outside;   “Old age is creeping up on me,” he jokes,
They want to discuss something with him
and is invited to come and sit down at the table, as they want to discuss something important with him.
“Something about Jim’s health, Eileen says,
"That's terrible, Jim!"
and Jim announces that he has dementia;  Eifion tries to look surprised, and remarks that it is terrible.
"Not at the moment – but it will get worse"
“No – it’s not – not at the moment, anyway,” says Jim, “But it will get worse, and I wanted you to know in case I did something stupid while I was working on the farm – at least, you would know why.”
Eifion promises to look after the place
Eifion assures him that he does not have to worry;  “I’ll look after the place – I promise I’ll do my best for Penrhewl, in the months and years to come!”   Eileen says that it really helps to hear that.
"Everything tastes better when you're happy!"
Around the table in number 10, the family is consuming fish and chips;  “Everything tastes better when you’re happy!” declares Brenda, and Gerwyn goes so far as to maintain that mushy peas are the poor man’s caviar.
"I can't wait to have Mam home again"
Tesni cannot wait to have her mother home again, but is warned that they must not rush things.
"Did she mention Dylan when she woke up?"
Gerwyn asks Guto if his mother mentioned Dylan when she woke up, and is told but she just wanted the family to know the good news.   Tesni calls it the best news that she has ever had,
"We can enjoy the future as a family"
and Brenda says that they can relax again, and enjoy the future as a family.
"These mushy peas don't agree with me"
Gerwyn is still looking pensive;  he says he is going for a walk, as mushy peas do not agree with him.
Sara is feeding Ifan, with limited success
In the Deri, Ifan is sitting in a high chair as Sara feeds him, and she remarks that it is nice that Dylan has something to celebrate.   He does not look in celebratory mood,
Dylan's nerves are obviously 'shot to pieces'
and accidentally knocks over a glass of wine.   As Sara clears it up,
"There's something I have to do at work"
he decides that there is something he has to do at work, and leaves in quite a hurry.
Is Ifan deliberately being unco-operative?
Ifan does not look particularly keen to eat anything.
"You don't need to send it now, Mam"
Diane has discovered the letter which Dai deposited in the bin, and Jason tells her that she does not need to send it now that Jaclyn is on the mend.
"In the bin is where that belongs!"
When Dai comes in, Jason shows him the letter, and he maintains that it belongs in the bin.
"I'm the one who should decide that"
“I’m the one who should decide that – no-one else,” Diane informs him, “I want to resign as a councillor.”
"You need some patience in this place sometimes!"
“You need some patience in this place sometimes,” Dai growls, and will not be dissuaded by Jason;
"It's about time she heard a few home truths!"
“It’s about time she heard a few home truths!   She should be glad that Jaclyn’s recovering, not using it as an excuse to feel sorry for herself all the time!”
"It's all you, you, you!"
Diane is by this time in tears, as he continues ranting, “It’s all you, you, you!   Not everyone in this village is as lucky as us, believe me!   I could tell you a few things – it’s about time you put things in perspective, Diane!”
Is Dylan contemplating taking drastic action?
By Jaclyn’s bed, Dylan appears to be fiddling with the drip attached to her arm when Gerwyn comes into sight;
"What are you doing here?"
he demands what Dylan is doing there.   “The same as you, probably – I’ve come to see Jaclyn,” he answers.
"You can go – I'll stay with her"
“How long have you been here?” Gerwyn demands, “You can go now – I’ll stay with her.
"Jaclyn wasn't exactly keen to see you"
“Listen, Dylan, I don’t want to push it, but she wasn’t exactly keen to see you this morning, was she?”   Dylan puts it down to her being confused;  “Or perhaps she does not want to see you!” Gerwyn suggests.
"I'll come back when she's making more sense"
“Right, I will come back again when that she’s a bit stronger, and making a bit more sense,” Dylan says.
"I'll tell the staff Jaclyn doesn't want to see you"
This does not meet with Gerwyn’s approval;  “I’ll tell the staff that Jaclyn doesn’t want to see you,”
"And why would you do that?"
and Dylan wonders why he would do that.
"Just doing what Jaclyn wants"
“I’m just doing what Jaclyn wants,” is the reply, “I’ll let you know if she changes her mind.”   Again Dylan maintains that she is not thinking straight, but does in fact leave the room;
He watches them . . .
he watches for a few seconds through the glass,
. . . and then leaves
and then walks out of the hospital.
