Ieuan is making breakfast |
Next morning, when Kelly comes downstairs, she finds Ieuan making breakfast;
"If you're anything like your Auntie Neet . . ." |
“Smashed avocado on toast – if you’re anything like your Auntie Neet, I’m sure you’ll love it,” he says and she confirms that it is her favourite.
"I need all the energy I can get today" |
“I need all the energy I can get today – I have to see Diane.”
"The big showdown, is it?" |
He appreciates that this is going to be the big showdown; “Well, you’re doing your best – and if Diane can’t see that, then stuff her!” replies Ieuan. Kelly is really grateful for his support and for the fact that he is willing to be there. He is adamant that is what Anita would want.
"Lush smashed avocado!" |
Kelly is going to sort herself out and then she will be back for the lush smashed avocado.
Something on his phone pleases Ieuan |
When she has gone upstairs, he takes out
his phone and looks at something interesting, which pleases him greatly.
"I'm not sure about this, OK, Dani" |
At number 9, Jinx comments, “I’m not sure about this, OK? The timing is a bit . . .”
"Come on, kids!" |
Dani ignores him and calls for the children, telling them not to forget their books; she hopes that Mark will enjoy reading them stories tonight.
Jinx attempts to continue, “With Jason still missing, it doesn’t feel right to go away.”
"You need a break – and so do I!" |
Dani stresses that he has been looking for Jason all week and needs a break – as does she.
He protests that he does not even know where they are going, so how does he know what to pack.
"Just wear comfy clothes" |
“Just comfy clothes,” she advises, “And a nice shirt in case there’s a nice restaurant.”
He does not want to sound ungrateful and throw cold water on things, but he has had a really tough week.
"Are you looking forward to it now?" |
Her answer to that is to kiss him, then ask, “Are you looking forward to it now?”
"Yes, Dani" |
He reluctantly agrees that he is.
"Are teachers allowed to leave school at lunchtime?" |
As they cross the road from the deli, Lleucu asks her father, “Are teachers allowed to leave school at lunchtime?”
"The deputy cam, if he has been a good boy" |
He replies that the deputy can, if he has been a good boy. “It’s a pity the head isn’t as well-behaved,” she growls, adding sarcastically, when asked if she is looking forward to the six form session tomorrow,
"I'm sure it will be amazing!" |
“I’m sure it will be amazing!”
Diane is clearly exhausted |
Inside the Deri, it appears that Diane has dozed off;
Kelly approaches |
Kelly comes in and sits down opposite her.
"No excuses, right?" |
“Diane, listen – no excuses, right? I messed up – totally preoccupied – not in a good place – and I’m really sorry.”
"He wanted pink milk, like Kelly makes" |
Diane does not say anything, so she continues, “How’s Ifan today?” Apparently he would not eat his breakfast, because he wanted pink milk like Kelly makes.
"Do you think I can pick him up from school today?" |
“I made him a strawberry smoothie the other day,” Kelly recalls, “Do you think I can pick him up from school today?”
"Ifan is mine and Dai's responsibility" |
“Ifan is mine and Dai’s responsibility,” Diane groans, “We’re his blood relatives – and we have to learn to cope somehow.”
"Jason and I had an arrangement" |
Kelly is anxious to help; “Jason and I had an arrangement. Diane, I know we’re all traumatised, drained, exhausted –
"This is about what's best for Ifan" |
“but this is about damage limitation and what’s best for Ifan.”
"Well, we agree about one thing" |
Diane is glad that they agree on one thing and is asked if she has eaten anything today.
"Slap-up bar meal . . ." |
“Right, slap-up bar meal – on me – no arguments!” Kelly insists,
". . . or Pot Noodle!" |
“Either that, Diane – or two words – Pot Noodle!”
Siôn has new shoes |
When Cai and Lleucu return to Y Felin, they find Siôn with some trendy running shoes;
"It's unlucky to put new shoes on the table" |
Lleucu points out that it is unlucky to put a new pair of shoes on the table, and he replies, “Luckily I’m not superstitious!
"You inspired this, Lleucu" |
“You inspired this, Lleucu, after the chat we had the other day.”
“You think running is the meaning of ‘happy in your skin’, do you?” she demands.
"Well, I've accepted my 'Dad body'" |
Her father says that he has accepted his ‘Dad body’
He returns to the school |
and now has to get back to school; he is looking forward to her accompanying him to the sixth form session tomorrow.
She still has not made up her mind whether to move to the sixth form in September
"Who painted 'Cofiwch Dryweryn' on the wall" |
and enquires of Siôn, “Who painted ‘Cofiwch Dryweryn’ on a wall in the village?” [‘Remember Tryweryn’ – the Afon Tryweryn valley was flooded in 1965 to create Llyn Celyn reservoir, in order to supply Liverpool and Wirral with water for industry.]
"Jinx, or possibly Guto Parri" |
Siôn believes that it was Jinx who painted it, or it might have been Guto Parri;
"Mind you, I've picked up a few paintbrushes!" |
“Mind you, I’ve picked up a few paintbrushes for the language!” he adds.
"Did you go to jail?" |
Lleucu wants to know if he went to jail; “That’s what I’d like to do,” she enthuses, “Take action for the language – instead of talk – just like Saunders Lewis wanted us to!”
Siôn detects a kindred spirit |
Siôn realises that she is a kindred mind.
Dani is ready to leave |
Dani comes downstairs, ready for their outing and
"Very smart!" |
Jinx is very impressed by her appearance.
"I'm making an effort" |
“I’m going away, so I’m making an effort – have you got everything?”
"You can be the navigator" |
is still eager to know where they are going, so she shows him on her phone; “You can be the navigator.”
"Dani – this date . . ." |
He finds that it is Cwt Bugail [Shepherd’s Hut], but then draws her attention to the date she has booked. “Tonight – June 12th,” she replies,
". . . is in 2025!" |
but he indicates that the date is in 2025.
"I knew it was too good to be true" |
“Oh, I knew it was too good to be true – these places are always fully booked! I’m sorry, Jinx!”
"We can go another time" |
He is not really bothered and says that they will go another time;
She storms off upstairs |
she angrily storms upstairs
"Hiya, Mark" |
as he gets out his phone and calls Mark.
"Ifan needs stability and routine" |
“As you said, Ifan needs stability, he needs routine – he thrives when he’s got order. That’s why I’m mortified by what happened yesterday,” says Kelly.
Diane appreciates that it was a one-off; “I was angry with the situation and I took it out on you.
"He's the only piece of Jason I've got left" |
“The thing is, Ifan is the only piece of Jason I have left – and I’d do anything for him, but as he gets older, there is no telling how his needs will change.”
"It's a massive commitment" |
Kelly appreciates that it is a massive commitment; Diane would be prepared to make it in a flash, if she was sure she still had the energy.
"A home full of love and support" |
“All I want is for Ifan to be brought up in a home full of love and support.”
"I can do it – I want to do it!" |
“I can do it,” Kelly assures her, “I want to do it – and I owe it to Jason – who knows?
"One day he may be back in Ifan's life" |
“One day he may be back in Ifan’s life.”
"Are you sure about this?" |
Diane is by no means convinced of that and demands whether Kelly is sure about what she is saying.
“I’m sure!” Kelly declares and is reminded that she will not be on her own; Ifan can stay with Dai and Diane every . . . Friday night, possibly, so Kelly can have some freedom.
"Ifan would love that" |
Kelly confirms that Ifan would love that.
DS Thomas arrives |
At that moment they are interrupted by DS Thomas;
"Is there any news?" |
she had been told by Dai that Diane was at the Deri. “There has been a development in the case,” she begins,
"Can we go somewhere more private?" |
requesting that they could go somewhere more private to talk. Diane looks anxiously at Kelly.
"Can you tile?" |
At APD, Mathew asks Howard, who is duly clad in an APD fleece, whether he can tile. “I did a friend’s bathroom once,” is the reply,
"I got them all upside down" |
“I had to start again because every tile was upside down.”
"Didn't you notice the pattern was upside down?" |
Mathew wonders why he did not notice the pattern was upside down
"No pattern – they were all white" |
and is informed, “No pattern – they were all white.”
"Bacon baguettes from 'Tamed'" |
Griffiths comes in with lunch for the staff; “Bacon baguettes from ‘Tamed’, as Howard missed out yesterday.” Mathew jokes that he ought to check the safe,
"Honest money from my new enterprise" |
but it is pointed out, “This was paid for with honest money from my new enterprise. You know Rhys’ holidaying couple?
"Mami's house is a lot nicer than number 10" |
“Mami’s house is a lot nicer than number 10!”
"You poached them?" |
“You poached them?” demands Mathew.
"Where did you stay last night, then?" |
Howard wants to know where he stayed last night, in that case;
“At number 7,” is the answer,
"Did you give Kelly a cut?" |
so Mathew enquires if Kelly was given a cut of the money. “No – she was glad of the company,” he replies.
“You took advantage of her situation to make money to pay for baguettes?” demands Mathew; Griffiths describes it as a win-win situation,
"Kelly doesn't have to know – does she?" |
stressing that Kelly does not have to know about the money.
"A snood" |
The DS explains that a piece of clothing has been found that could have belonged to Jason, but that has not been confirmed yet; “A ‘snood’ – a woman found it while paddle boarding about eight miles from where he went missing.”
"A bright orange one?" |
“An orange snood, like, bright orange?” Kelly asks, but they are waiting for a DNA report. “It’s Jason’s – he was wearing it when he went missing – I’ve seen the missing person’s description.”
"And blood was found on it" |
DS Thomas adds, “I should also mention that blood was found on the clothing – but, as I said, I have to emphasise . . .”
"It's unlikely you'll find him alive, isn't it?" |
Kelly interrupts, “What does that suggest, then? I don’t know – did he hit his head after falling into the water? If it is Jason’s blood, it’s unlikely you’ll find him alive, isn’t it?”
The DS says nothing . . . |
The DS makes no comment,
. . . and Diane is in tears |
but Diane is in tears.
"That's not bad" |
As they munch on their bacon baguettes, Howard comments, “That’s not bad,” and is told not to talk with his mouth full. Griffiths receives a message on his phone – the latest news about Jason.
"They've found a 'snood' with blood on it . . ." |
“They’ve found a ‘snood’ with blood on it – they haven’t confirmed yet,
". . . Kelly is convinced it's Jason's" |
“but Kelly is adamant it is his.”
"You go and check that `Kelly's all right" |
Mathew instructs him to go and check that Kelly is all right and APD will be closed for the rest of the day.
"Take care of her, mind!" |
He tells Griffiths to take care of her; “The last thing she needs now is to be deceived.”
Dani come into number 9 |
Dani arrives back home at number 9,
Jinx is wearing an apron |
where she finds Jinx wearing an apron;
"What's going on?" |
“What’s going on?” she demands, “Mark insisted that the children stay with him – Cheryl is doing a film night or something,”
"I've run you a bath" |
Jinx tells her that he has run a bath for her,
"I don't want a bath – I want my deposit back!" |
but she protests, “I don’t want a bath – I want my deposit back from Cwt Bugail!”
"They're happy to change the date" |
He reveals that he has phoned them and they are happy to change the date.
“I’m just gutted!” she exclaims, “I wanted to do something nice, go somewhere special, just you and me.”
"Anywhere is special if you're there!" |
Jinx emphasises that anywhere is special if she is there,
"Yeah, it is cheesy!" |
then realises that it sounded very cheesy.
"What's important is that we're together" |
“What I’m trying to say is we don’t have to go anywhere – what’s important is that we’re together. I don’t know what I would have done without you recently.
"Go and sink into that bath" |
“Go upstairs, sink into that bath and I’ll bring you a glass of Prosecco.”
Kelly is reorganising |
Kelly is reorganising at number 7
"You seem busy" |
when Griffiths comes in, remarking that she seems busy. “I’ve bought a new cupboard for Ifan –
"Diane has agreed that I'll be his guardian" |
“Diane has agreed that I’ll be his guardian, so he’s coming to live with me –
"He'll have this space down here" |
“it makes sense that he has a space down here as well as upstairs.”
"I'm glad you've reached an agreement" |
Griffiths is glad that she and Diane have reached an agreement, “Especially now that the police have found . . .”
"I'll get us a takeaway" |
“Are you staying tonight? I’ll get us a takeaway – we can FaceTime Auntie Neet,” says Kelly,
"On the condition that I pay" |
but he stipulates one condition that he should pay and he looks very uncomfortable.
"Did you know that Siôn has been arrested?" |
As they sit at the table in Y Felin, Lleucu asks, “Did you know that Siôn has been arrested for fighting for the language?” Her father did know that and tells her that there is more food if she wants it.
He points out that, “Dadi’s noodles are the best!”
Siôn returns to the house . . . |
Just then, Siôn returns from his exercise
. . . and shows off his tattoo |
and reveals that he now has had a tattoo on his arm, ‘Cofiwch Dryweryn’.
Lleucu laughs and is told, “Like you said, sometimes actions speak louder than words.”
"You're a legend, Siôn!" |
She regards him as a legend,
"Siôn – you idiot!" |
but Cai calls him an idiot.
"I'll get the rest of Ifan's stuff tomorrow" |
Kelly will go back to Bryntirion tomorrow to get the rest of Ifan’s stuff,
She is amazed at all that food |
then notices the food which Ieuan has assembled for their meal. “You deserve a treat,” he announces and she says that it is no wonder that he is skint.
“I wanted a word with you about that,” he begins,
"Sorry – I can't afford to lend you anything" |
but she regrets that she cannot afford to lend him anything.
"Here's your share" |
“No, I don’t want to borrow anything,” he stresses, “The opposite in fact – here’s your share.”
"Share of what?" |
Kelly is surprised by the money he is offering her,
"Some guests stay at my house last night" |
and he rather guiltily explains, “Some people, guests, stayed in my house last night – that’s why I came over here – but do you deserve half the profit.”
"Having you here last night was priceless!" |
She flatly refuses anything; “No – the fact you turned up here last night when you did was priceless. Honestly – you have no idea.”
"But I made a profit" |
Again he stresses that he made a profit,
"I slept like a baby all night" |
but Kelly continues, “I slept like a baby all night, just because there was someone else in the house – so I don’t care, one hundred, two hundred, two thousand profit – I want to you to . . . I want you to know that you’re welcome here any time, OK?”
"Win-win!" |
He describes this as, “A win-win situation.” She has realised that she needs people around her;
"That's the only way I shall get through this nightmare" |
that is the only way she will get through this nightmare.
"Fancy a poppadom?" |
Ieuan promises her that he is not going anywhere; “Fancy a poppadom?”
"Yeah – go on, then!" |
and they get stuck into their meal.
There is food next door as well |
A similarly lavish spread is at number 9; “You know, I could get used to this,” comments Dani,
"We'll have to have a 'Cwt Bugail' night more often |
so Jinx proposes that they will have to have a ‘Cwt Bugail’ night more often.
“It’s weird, though – just doing nothing – sitting here, enjoying ourselves – no kids!” Dani sighs.
"There's something I want to tell you, OK?" |
He agrees that it has been a week and a half and adds, “Listen, Dani, there’s something I want to tell you, OK?
"I just want you to know . . ." |
“I want you to understand, erm, and I’m not expecting . . . I just want you to know, more than anything . . .”
Then Dani's phone rings . . . |
At this inconvenient point, Dani’s phone rings;
. . . and she goes into the kitchen |
when she sees who it is, she goes into the kitchen.
"Well, thanks for telling me" |
“Yes – already? OK, well, thanks for telling me.”
"Is everything all right?" |
Jinx asks if everything is all right
"It was only Mark" |
and she makes the excuse that it was just Mark reporting that the children are asleep. Jinx wants to continue their conversation, but she is more intent on making a cup of tea.
A taxi arrives . . . |
A taxi arrives outside the shop
. . . and someone gets out . . . |
and a female figure gets out;
. . . none other than Sara Francis |
the camera gradually reveals that it is Sara Francis, Jason’s former wife, who ran away to Australia at the end of 2021.
