Colin's tent . . . |
In his tent, Colin is snoring away,
. . . where Colin is fast asleep |
oblivious to what is going on outside; there is a sudden cry of pain from out in the woodland.
"What was that?" |
Mathew and Rhys are near the campsite when they also hear the call for help, but cannot see anyone.
"What if someone's in trouble?" |
“What if someone’s in trouble,” says Mathew, and tries to contact the others on his walkie-talkie, but without success.
"Why isn't anyone answering?" |
“Why isn’t anyone answering?” he shouts and Rhys tells him not to be so dramatic.
“I know you’re angry, but someone out there might need our help,” snaps Mathew.
"I'm trying to get some sleep here!" |
Colin’s head appears out of the tent and angrily informs them, “I’m trying to get some sleep here!” He is told that they just heard someone screaming, they do not know who it was and the walkie-talkie is not working.
Then Colin springs into action |
Colin quickly scrambles out of the tent, Mathew will go and find Mike, to see if he has heard anything while Rhys is told to find the rest of the group.
"I'm going to check that everyone's all right" |
Colin is determined that he is going to check that everyone is all right and they run off across the field.
Sioned is becoming anxious |
Meanwhile Sioned is sending a text, ‘Where are you?’ to DJ;
"He was supposed to be here ten minutes ago!" |
she informs her mother, “DJ was supposed to be here ten minutes ago!” Eileen replies that she should not have let him go away with the boys.
"I shall have to go on my own now" |
“And how is that helping?” Sioned demands, “I shall have to go on my own now.”
"I'll take you, Sioned" |
Eileen volunteers to take her, but she refuses.
"Tell him to follow me to the hospital" |
“Listen, if DJ turns up, just tell him to follow me to the hospital,” she says and her mother is anxious that she will be all right. “Perhaps he misunderstood and he’s waiting at the hospital,” Sioned goes on.
"Why isn't he answering your texts, then?" |
“Why isn’t he answering your texts then?” asks Eileen. Sioned explains that Matthew has all their phones – digital detox or something. “I don’t go to see you going on your own,” her mother insists,
"He would never miss today" |
but Sioned tries to sound confident that DJ will be at the hospital, as he would never miss today.
Eileen has had a letter |
As she leaves the house, Eileen picks up an envelope, which we see is from His Majesty’s Court Service, from the table, then puts it down again.
"Why aren't these walkie-talkies working?" |
As they trudge through the woods, calling Jason’s name; “Why aren’t these walkie-talkies working?” he snarls and Rhys simply wants to return to the campsite, explaining that DJ will be after their blood if he misses the scan because they are walking round in circles.
Then they meet Siôn |
Then they encounter Siôn who wonders why they are there; “The boys heard someone calling for help – presumably you,” replies Colin. Siôn says that it was not him; he went ahead and has not seen DJ since.
Colin takes charge of the situation |
Colin takes charge of the situation; “Listen, eyes peeled – we’re looking for Jinx, Jason and DJ.”
Jinx is also searching . . . |
Meanwhile Jinx is in another part of the wood, also shouting, but receives no reply;
. . . and spots someone by a tree |
there is the sound of thunder in the distance as he sees a figure sitting by a tree.
"I twisted my ankle" |
He finds that it is DJ, who tells him, “Siôn walked off, then I fell over a tree root and twisted my ankle.
"Have you got your walkie-talkie?" |
Have you got your walkie-talkie? Mine’s on the blink. I’ve been calling for help for ages.” Jinx answers that his is not working either.
DJ wonders where Jason is and grumbles, “I should be back by now!”
"Don't worry about the orienteering" |
Jinx tells him not to worry about the orienteering. “Not that – we’ve got the three month scan today. Sioned will have been up all night worrying about the babies – and we’ve never got this far before.
"I should be at Sioned's side" |
“I should be at her side.”
Neither of them has a map |
Jinx attempts to get him to his feet and then they discover that neither of them has a map;
"The blind leading the blind" |
“The blind leading the blind – we’ll never find our way back,” groans DJ.
Kelly comes out of the shop . . . |
Kelly is hurrying out of the shop, where Llinos is on duty,
. . . and meets Diane |
when she encounters Diane;
"Have you heard from Auntie Neet?" |
“Have you heard from Auntie Neet?” Kelly asks.
"Not since that photo" |
“Not since that photo of her with Mac the Moose [a steel and concrete sculpture of a moose in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan] – but you can’t expect her to get in touch every day, can you?
"She's enjoying herself too much to text us" |
“She’s enjoying herself too much to text us – and that’s what’s important. We were lucky to get an update at all. And I haven’t heard a word from Jason since the boys went away.”
Sioned arrives for her scan |
Sioned arrives at the hospital and is told to take a seat;
She looks at her phone . . . |
she looks anxiously at her phone
. . .and the next expectant mother |
and the rather more advanced mother next to her.
"Was it you, shouting for help?" |
DJ, assisted by Jinx, makes his ponderous progress through the woods and is met by Colin, Siôn and Rhys. “Was it you, shouting and screaming for help?” Colin demands.
"Why did you take so long to look for me?" |
DJ wants to know why it took them so long to come and look for him.
"I've been worried sick about you!" |
“I’ve been worried sick about you!” says Colin, but they cannot go home yet as no-one knows where Jason is.
“The last time I saw him was by the river,” Jinx tells them, “He was in a foul mood, so I left him there.” Colin proposes that they go to the place where he was last seen;
"He can find his own way back to Cwmderi" |
“Why? He’s a big boy – he can find his own way back to Cwmderi,” sneers Jinx.
Rhys will assist DJ back to the camp |
Colin is insistent that they cannot just leave him and will continue the search; Jinx asks Rhys to take DJ back to the camp, “So he can phone the missus!”
Eileen summons up the courage . . . |
Eileen, in the farmhouse is looking very worried
. . . to open the letter . . . |
and eventually picks up the letter;
. . . and does not like what it says |
she reads what it says with considerable trepidation.
"This is where I left him . . ." |
Colin and Jinx reach the riverbank where Jason was last seen;
". . . he was talking about walking across" |
“This is the river he was threatening to walk through,” says Jinx,
They shout Jason's name . . . |
and they begin to shout Jason’s name again.
. . . but then Jinx notices something |
Then Jinx notices a map lying on the ground,
. . . down by the swirling waters |
close to the waters edge;
"He hasn't got into the water, has he?" |
“He hasn’t gone into the water, has he?”
"We have to call the police!" |
Colin is adamant that they have to phone the police.
The scan seems very clear |
Sioned is undergoing the ultrasound scan which clearly reveals that there are two babies;
"Are you still checking the hearts?" |
“Are you still checking the hearts?” she asks.
Eileen bursts in |
The door suddenly bursts open and Eileen appears; she is informed that the hearts are being checked and fears the worst.
"Is something wrong?" |
She asks if there is something wrong
"Everything's fine – with both of them" |
and is told, “Everything’s fine – with both of them.”
This is wonderful news for Sioned |
Sioned and her mother are overjoyed.
The emergency services have swung into action |
Now police and search teams have been deployed in the search for Jason.
"No way would he have fallen into the water" |
“He’s sensible – there’s no way he would have fallen into the water,” says Mathew, but Rhys points out that he is no expert.
"The rescue teams are out in the woods and on the water" |
Colin has been liaising with the police and reports, “The rescue teams are out in the woods and on the water. They’ve contacted Dai and Diane about the situation.”
As the sound of a helicopter can be heard overhead,
"I've already phoned Dai and Diane" |
DJ advises that he has already phoned Diane, as he thought it was the right thing to do.
Jinx goes to talk to the police |
Now the police would like a word with Jinx, as he was the last person to see him.
"I've got a bad feeling about this, boys" |
“I’ve got a bad feeling about this, boys,” Colin groans,
Another vehicle joins the operation |
as a Fire Brigade vehicle passes them.
"It's all a lot of fuss, Diane!" |
As they come out of the Deri, Dai is complaining, “It’s all a lot of fuss!” but Diane reminds him that they have to take it seriously.
"All right?" |
When Kelly approaches,
"Jason's gone missing on the boys' trip" |
he informs her, “Jason’s gone missing on the boys’ trip,” but Diane is confident that they will find him in no time.
"Search and rescue have been called" |
“Search and rescue have been called,” he continues; Kelly insists that they go to number 7 with her, but is told that the police are on their way to the bungalow.
"You look as if you need a sit down!" |
“I’ll sort that,” says Kelly, “You look as if you need a sit down!”
"Nefi wen! It's only been a couple of hours!" |
“Nefi wen! It’s only been a couple of hours – what a palaver!” moans Dai.
Eileen looks at the scan |
Eileen is sitting in the waiting room, looking at the photos of the scan, when Sioned joins her.
"I'm glad everything's all right" |
“I’m glad everything’s all right,” says Eileen and this feeling is also shared by Sioned,
"That's definitely a foot there" |
who points out that she can definitely see a foot in the photograph.
"A big one, like your father's feet" |
“A big one, just like your father’s feet,” recalls her mother.
"He would have loved too be a grandfather" |
Sioned is sure that he would have loved to be a grandfather.
"It feels like yesterday" |
“It feels like yesterday when we had photos like these,” says Eileen,
"We looked at them for weeks" |
“We looked at them for weeks – your father carried one in his pocket and it showed it to anyone with a spare second – he was so proud of you –
"He would be very proud of you now" |
“and he would be very proud of you now.”
"Thanks for being here, Mam" |
Sioned thanks her mother for being there,
DJ contacts her . . . |
then her phone sounds with a call from DJ;
. . . but she does not seem interested |
after a few moments’ pause, she rejects the call.
The police leave number 7 |
The police are just leaving number 7 after talking to Dai and Diane;
"Jinx must know something" |
“If Jinx saw him last, he must know something,” says Diane.
Dai reminds her, “You heard what the bobbies said – he was fine when Jinx left him.
"He's asleep in the toilets" |
“For goodness’ sake, he’s in a pub somewhere, asleep in the toilets! You know what youngsters are like.”
Kelly says that she had better find some photos for the cops,
"Oh, no – Ifan!" |
then suddenly remembers Ifan, who she was supposed to get from the after-school club.
She rushes from the house |
She rushes out of the house.
"Nefi wen! There's always something!" |
“Nefi wen!” exclaims Dai once again, “There’s always something!” but Diane urges him to stop,
"There's a simple explanation" |
maintaining that there is a simple explanation.
"Decaf with two sugars" |
Back home at the farmhouse Eileen brings Sioned a cup of coffee, “Decaf with two sugars,” she says.
"I didn't want to upset you" |
“Listen, I didn’t ask you to come to the hospital today because I didn’t want to upset you – not after losing John,” Sioned tells her mother.
"The date of the court case" |
“That doesn’t mean I don’t want to be there for you now,” is the reply, “The truth is, I’m not sure . . . this is the date of the court case – early November.”
Eileen shows Sioned the letter |
She shows Sioned the letter; “That’s why I wanted to be with you and the twins today –
"While I can" |
“while I can.”
"I shall be at the court with you" |
Sioned is adamant that she will be at the court with her mother, although she may be, as her mother describes it, “Like a boat!”
"Then we can move on" |
Then they will be able to move on with their lives at last.
"I'm so sorry, Sioned" |
DJ limps in, full of apologies and is asked whether there is any news about Jason.
"Do you want to see Bill and Ben?" |
“Do you want to see the photos of Bill and Ben?” Sioned enquires, although she does not know at this juncture whether they are boys.
"Should we talk to Kelly?" |
Colin and Jinx have also arrived back in the village; “It’s so strange coming back without him,” Jinx comments, “Do you think we should talk to Kelly?”
"It might not be wise" |
Colin considers that it might be wise not to do so at the moment,
"Oi! What happened?" |
but then the door of number 7 opens and Kelly shouts, “Oi! What happened? Did you argue?”
"No, I didn't" |
Jinx says that he did not,
"You must know something" |
but she goes on, “You were the last person to see Jason, so you must know something!”
Jinx stresses that he has no idea where Jason is,
"I'm just as worried as you" |
and for her information, he is just as worried as she is.
She does not believe that |
She does not appear to believe this. Colin says that he will come into number 9 for a cup of tea.
"You shouldn't have been on your own" |
On the sofa at Penrhewl DJ appreciates that Sioned should not have gone through today on her own. She is just glad that her mother was there; “Mind you, having you there was the preferred option.”
"I can't believe they're in there" |
“I can’t believe they’re in there,” he remarks, “Do you want anything?” Sioned replies that she does want the toilet,
"I have to do that myself" |
but will have to do that for herself.
"It must have been amazing" |
As she leaves the room, her mother is coming in; DJ comments that it must have been amazing to see those babies on the screen.
"But it was heartbreaking" |
She agrees that it was, “But it was heartbreaking – we might as well face it – I’ll be in jail when they’re born.
"I need you to be there for Sioned . . . |
“And that’s why I want you to promise me something – I need you to be there for Sioned now! I mean it, DJ –
". . .not running away to Ireland" |
“no running away to Ireland every time things get tough.
"I won't be able to help" |
“You need to be there to help Sioned – because I won’t be able to.”
"You don't need to tell me to do that" |
“You don’t need to tell me to do that,” he answers.
Jinx brings Colin a cup of tea;
"You don't have to stay with me" |
“You don’t have to stay with me until Dani gets back,” he says,
"I don't want to go home" |
but Colin confesses that he simply does not want to go home.
“A miserable, empty flat awaits me.
"Kelly doesn't blame you" |
“Kelly doesn’t blame you, you know – she just wants to know exactly what happened.”
"Everyone will suspect me" |
Jinx predicts that this is what it is going to be like; “Everyone will suspect me – you know what people are like around here. Everyone blames Hywel for Tyler’s death.”
Colin points out that Jason is not dead,
"People look for someone to blame" |
but Jinx is adamant, “People look for someone to blame in situations like this – and it will be me!”
Bryntirion in darkness |
Bryntirion is in darkness, or rather an eerie blue light, when Dai and Diane come in. Diane is having trouble getting her case through the front door.
Diane looks at a photo |
Outside a screeching bird can be heard as Diane picks up a photograph and looks at it. When Dai locks the front door,
"Don't lock the door, Dai" |
she tells him not to do that as Jason might come home during the night.
"We could leave a light on" |
Dai suggests that they could leave a light on all night as well.
"I'm going to bed" |
Now he says it is time for bed;
Diane turns on a light . . . |
Diane turns a light as the screeching continues.
. . . and sits on the sofa |
She looks around the empty room and sits down on the sofa, feeling cold.
Bryntirion at night |
Our last view is of Bryntirion, with one window illuminated, as night falls.
