"Are you sure you're all right about things, Col?" |
Britt is fussing over Colin; “Are you sure you’re all right about everything today?”
"You and Kylie come first now" |
He tries to assure her that he is, stressing that she and Kylie come first from now on.
He leaves the house . . . |
He leaves the house and is on his way to the car when his phone sounds;
. . . and someone is trying to contact him |
when he sees that the call is from an unknown number,
Colin simply ignores it |
simply ignores it.
"You forgot the car keys!" |
Britt comes hurrying out of the house, shouting, “Colin, you forgot the car keys! Where’s your head at today?”
She gives Colin a hug |
She gives him a hug, then as she returns to the house,
Megan calls to them |
she sees Megan coming out of her shop, who cheerily waves to her and Colin.
Then another call |
As he gets into the car, his phone rings; this time he decisively rejects the call.
"Col, I'm leaving today at lunchtime" |
We see the caller is Yvonne, who leaves a message for him; “Col, I’m leaving today – at lunchtime. Stop ignoring me and phone me back, please.”
She hopes it will have the desired effect |
She hopes that this message will bear fruit.
Waiting for documentation at the children's home |
Colin is now at the children’s home, talking to Kylie as the paperwork is being completed; “Crossing the ‘t’s and dotting the ‘i’s,” as he puts it, “And then we’ll get the paperwork back.”
"Are you sure you want to have me back?" |
Kylie asks him, “Are you sure you want to have me back?” and he protests that of course they do, stressing that he is sorry for what he did.
"I'm really looking forward to having you back" |
“My head was all over the place – but I’m really looking forward to having you back.”
"What's wrong, Colin?" |
His phone rings yet again and Kylie can see that there is something wrong. He replies that an old friend is trying to get hold of him,
"Answer it, then" |
so she tells him to answer it.
"Nobody's going to take my attention today" |
“No, there’s no need,” he says, “Nobody’s going to take my attention today – no matter how many times they phone. Don’t you worry about him – he’s not important any more.”
When the phone sounds again, this time Kylie picks up the phone from the table and looks at it;
Kylie reads the message on his phone |
“Come and see me – I’m only here until lunchtime. And there’s an address.”
He is taken by surprise |
This takes Colin by surprise and Kylie warns that he does not have much time; she is going to hurry up the paperwork, so he can go to see his friend.
"There's no need for that" |
He insists that there is no need to do that, so she proposes that they can call there on their way back to Cwmderi. “You’ve done a lot for me, Col – it’s the least I can do,” she tells him.
"There are a couple of photo frames, too" |
Megan has gone to number 21, bringing some things which she has washed and ironed; “There are a couple of frames as well, to put photos of Kylie in,” which Britt thinks is a nice idea.
"You're supposed to make her feel at home" |
“You’re supposed to make her feel at home – that’s what I was told many years ago,” Megan adds
"Colin's much better after talking to you . . ." |
and Britt says that she cannot wait. She goes on that Colin is much better after talking to Megan at Apêl Maenan yesterday;
". . . he's like a new man today" |
whatever Megan said to him, he is like a new man today.
Colin arrives outside the house |
Colin’s car pulls up outside a large house; “Right, I think this is it,” he says,
"Are you sure you'll be all right?" |
“Are you sure you’ll be all right here for five minutes?”
"How many times do I have to tell you?" |
“How many times do I have to tell you?” responds Kylie, “Go!”
Colin knocks on the door . . . |
Colin walks up to the door and knocks;
. . . and is admitted byYvonne |
it is immediately opened by Yvonne and he nervously enters. She is about to hug him, but he recoils,
"Where have you been, Yvonne?" |
demanding, “Where the hell have you been, Yvonne?”
"Not everyone would open their home to a child" |
As they have a cup of tea together at number 21, Megan says that she is full of admiration for what Britt and Colin have done; “Not everyone would open their home to a child like you have.”
"Neil and Gloria did the same for us" |
Britt explains, “I don’t know where I’d be today if Neil and Gloria hadn’t done the same for me, Garry and Brandon. They gave us the stability we’d never had before – and I’ve turned out all right – well, I think I have – I’m happy, anyway! But it’s all thanks to them.”
"You must have enriched their lives as well" |
Megan is sure that the children enriched their lives as well,
"They deserve a medal for putting up with us" |
but Britt maintains that they deserve a medal for putting up with her, Garry and Brandon. “I’d like to see more of them, but they live so far away. We’re still in touch, of course.”
“If every child is appreciated what their parents did, like you do . . .” begins Megan, “But that’s another story.”
"It's a contact who helped me" |
Yvonne and Colin also have a cup of tea; “Who owns this big house, then?” he asks and she replies that it is a contact who is helping them.
"Contact – right!" |
“Contact – right!” he comments, “Why did you get in touch now, Yvonne? You’re taking a big risk.”
"I wanted to say goodbye" |
She repeats that she is leaving at lunchtime and wanted to say goodbye. His face falls and he realises that she is not be coming back.
"What about Delyth?" |
“What about Delyth? Where is she?”
"It's harder to find us if we're apart" |
He is told that it is harder for the cops to find them if they are apart and he realises that they are in a relationship.
"How could you kill that girl?" |
“How did it come to this? How could you kill that girl?” he wonders and she immediately replies that she did not.
“So why are you doing this?” he wants to know and she says that it is complicated.
"Try me!" |
“Try me!” Colin snarls.
"I helped to bury the body" |
“I didn't kill her,” she repeats, “But I helped to bury the body.”
"So you were involved" |
Colin is visibly shocked as he realises that she was involved . . . complicit.
Kylie listens to the news |
Meanwhile Kylie is waiting in the car, looking at her phone and listening to the news on the radio;
"Yvonne Evans" |
“Police have just released images of the two women suspected of murdering a young woman in the Swansea area ten years ago. They are asking the public to provide any information on the whereabouts of Yvonne Evans and Delyth Fielding who lived in Cwmderi until recently. They are asking anyone with information about their location to get in touch as soon as possible.”
Kylie looks up that name . . . |
Using the ‘Chwilota’ search engine, Kylie looks up ‘Yvonne Evans’
. . . and finds the police photo |
and finds the police photo of her.
"Is there any connection with Colin?" |
She wonders if there is any connection with Colin being in the house.
Britt is on her phone when there is a knock at the door; she finds that it is Mark and had been expecting Colin back.
"I haven't heard from him this morning" |
Mark has not heard from him, so she explains, “He went to get Kylie this morning and I haven’t heard from him since.
"I keep phoning, but he hangs up" |
“I keep phoning, but he hangs up.”
After getting her to sign for a parcel, Mark comments that is not like Colin. Britt says that Kylie’s number has changed and that she cannot get through to anyone at the fostering place.
"I'll call him, then" |
Mark volunteers to call him, to see if he will answer.
“I’d go to the home myself, but Col has the car, so I don’t know what else to do,” she goes on.
"I wanted to say goodbye properly" |
As they sit with their cups of tea, Yvonne pleads, “I wanted to meet up to say goodbye properly, not . . .”
"It's Mark" |
Colin’s phone sounds again and he tells her that it is Mark.
"Does he know where you are?" |
She is very worried that he knows where Colin is,
"Nobody knows I'm here" |
so he states categorically, “Nobody knows that I’m here.” She does not have much time, so he wants to know when he can expect to see her again;
"When another body is found?" |
“Don’t tell me – when another body is found?” She urges him not to be like that.
"That's why you came back, isn't it?" |
“That is why you came back, isn’t it? All this nonsense about coming back to see your family – how much you missed us – how much you wanted to spend time with me.
"You were using me!" |
“The truth is, you were using me, weren’t you? You came back because they’d found the body and you were worried. You were panicking – that’s the truth!”
"I just wanted to try to do the right thing" |
Yvonne concedes that might have been the case to begin with; “I just wanted to try to do the right thing.” Colin recommends that she should do the right thing and phone the police.
"I would go to prison again" |
She protests that she would go to prison again, but he points out, “Not as a murderer. If what you just said is true, tell the police, clear your name.”
She screams, “I’d be in for life!”
"Tell the truth, Yvonne" |
but he reminds her that her conscience would be clear and that she can stop this nonsense. He emphasises that he will be there to help her and urges her to tell the truth.
"I can't!" |
Her reply is, “I can’t!”
"I don't have a choice, then" |
“I don’t have a choice, then,” Colin tells her, getting up and dialling a number on his phone.
"You're not doing this to me!" |
“You’re not doing this to me!” she shouts, seizing the phone from him, “I’m not going back to jail again!” She picks up her bag and announces that she is going now.
"You'll be running for the rest of your life" |
Colin is amazed that she is continuing to run, warning her that she will be running for the rest of her life.
"That's better than rotting in a cell" |
She maintains that is better than rotting in a cell.
“What sort of life is that? Looking over your shoulder, all day, every day! You’re not dragging me into this.”
"You're on your own from now on!" |
Colin retrieves his phone from her hand and sternly points out to her, “You’re on your own from now on!”
He is about to make his exit . . . |
He turns to walk out of the house, but as he approaches the front door,
. . . when Yvonne barges past him . . . |
she barges past him wielding a knife.
. . . and threatens him with a knife |
“I can’t let you do this,” she threatens.
"They left two hours ago" |
At number 21, Britt reports that they left the fostering home over two hours ago;
"At least I have Kylie's new number" |
“But at least I have Kylie’s new number now.” Mark advises her not to worry too much,
"They may have gone for a burger somewhere" |
as they have probably gone for a burger somewhere.
"I'm sure there's a reason" |
As she dials Kylie’s new number, she says, “I’m sure there is a reason Colin isn’t answering to either of us.” Then the call is answered;
"Kylie, where are you?" |
“Kylie – are you OK, love? Where are you? I’ve been worried.”
She is not sure of the answer |
Kylie answers that they have taken a bit of a detour and she is not sure exactly where she is – and Colin is not there – he has popped in to see a friend and he did not say who it was.
Yvonne is holding Colin at knifepoint |
Meanwhile Yvonne is still threatening Colin with the vicious-looking knife.
"You're not going to solve anything like this" |
“You’re not going to solve anything like this,” he tells her, so she insists that he should come with her.
"Come with me" |
“Come away – we can talk properly and work out what to do,” she says, but Colin refuses to run away. “I won’t let you phone the cops,” she warns him.
"Are you going to keep me as a hostage?" |
“What are you going to do then? Keep me as a hostage? Hide me in an attic or a basement somewhere? Look at yourself! This isn’t like you, Yvonne – you’re better than this!
"Let's go to the police together" |
“Come on, put the knife down – let’s go to the police together – you and me.”
Her resolve seems to be wavering
She lowers the knife . . . |
as he continues, “Go on, just put it down – that’s it.”
. . . but still holds on to it |
In tears, she hugs him, while still holding the knife and Colin believes that the crisis is over.
Then they hear Kylie's voice |
However, there is a knock at the door and Kylie shouts for him; Colin tells Yvonne who it is.
"You said no-one knew you were here" |
“You said no-one knew you were here!” Yvonne snarls;
"She was in the car" |
he explains that she was in the car and he had no choice.
"There's no other way out of this" |
“Please don’t drag her into this, OK? Come on, Yvonne – you were about to come with me, please, there’s no other way out of this.”
"We'll go out the back, Col" |
She determines that they will go out the back, so Kylie will not know; “Please, Colin, I don’t know what to do – my head is spinning!”
"Yes, if that is what you want" |
He humours her, agreeing that they will go out the back if that is what she wants.
"I just want to do what's best for you" |
They walk away from the front door, as he assures her that the last thing he wants is for her to get hurt; “I just want to do what’s right for you – so that you’re safe – trust me.
"I'm sorry, Yvonne" |
“I’m sorry, Yvonne.”
He suddenly grabs the knife and they both fall to the floor,
Kylie listens to the commotion inside |
with Kylie outside, listening to the struggle and the screams. She is still on the phone to Britt as she peers through the letterbox and shouts Colin’s name,
"What's going on, Kylie?" |
which causes Britt some anxiety.
Kylie hammers on the door and informs Britt that she does not know what has happened.
"What have you done?" |
Inside it appears that Yvonne has inadvertently stabbed Colin; he sits on the floor, clutching his chest, demanding, “What have you done?”
"I wasn't trying to" |
Yvonne insists, “I wasn’t trying to – don’t worry!”
Kylie is watching |
as we can see Kylie looking through the letterbox at what is happening.
"Yvonne is in there . . ." |
She moves away from the front door and informs Britt that it is Yvonne;
". . . I think she's stabbed him!" |
“The woman the police are looking for – I think she’s stabbed him!”
"I'm so sorry, Colin" |
Yvonne repeats how sorry she is and then rushes away;
"Call an ambulance!" |
Colin tells her to call an ambulance, but she returns with a towel,
"Put pressure on it" |
instructing him to put pressure on it.
"I'll drop you at the hospital" |
“We need to get you out to the car and I’ll drop you at the hospital.
"I ned an ambulance!" |
Colin insists that what is needed is an ambulance, but she answers, “I can’t – Kylie might have phoned the police!”
"Stop putting yourself first for once!" |
Colin appears to be slowly losing consciousness and urges her, “Stop putting yourself first for once – I need help – please!”
Kylie is now back in the car |
Kylie runs back to the car and on the phone Britt needs to know where she is, but she cannot remember.
"Are there any roadsigns?" |
“Are there any roadsigns? Anything?” Britt demands, but Kylie is afraid to get out of the car.
"Can you send your location?" |
“It’s just really, really important that we get help to Colin – can you send me your location by text? On your phone, on the text, send my location!”
"My phone battery's nearly gone" |
To make matters more difficult, the battery on Kylie’s phone is about to expire. Britt instructs Mark to phone the police and he does so, but at that moment the battery does fail.
"Did she send the location first?" |
“Did she send the location first?” asks Mark and we assume that that she did.
"I'm going to phone the ambulance now . . ." |
Colin holds the towel over his abdomen while Yvonne says that she is going to phone the ambulance now –
". . . but I can't be here when they arrive" |
but is adamant she cannot be there when they arrive.
"There's a lot of blood" |
“There’s a lot of blood,” he gasps and once more she maintains that she never wanted to hurt him; she begs him to believe that. “I don’t feel well!” he groans and as he appears to be lapsing into unconsciousness
"I'm so sorry, Col" |
she repeats that she is so sorry.
He begs her not to go and leave him, but rather to stay with him;
The Dyfed Powys constabulary arrive |
at that moment approaching sirens can be heard as a police car arrives outside.
"Please hurry!" |
Kylie tells them to hurry
They burst into the house . . . |
and they burst into the house.
. . . and Yvonne is arrested |
“Yvonne Evans, I’m arresting you on suspicion of the murder of Laura Thompson and of wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm to Colin Evans.”
She is handcuffed . . . |
As the caution is read out, Yvonne is handcuffed and looks down at Colin,
. . . while Colin watches helplessly |
who is still just managing to cling on to consciousness.
