Rhys catches up with the news

Rhys is drinking coffee in the deli while reading about the recent events at Penrhewl in the Western Post;  ‘Local farmer allegedly shot by neighbour’, reads the headline.

"She deliberately shot Howard?"

He turns and asks Sioned, who is working behind the counter, “Is it true – she deliberately shot Howard?”

"No!"

She immediately answers, “No, it’s not – and if anyone else asks, you can tell them the same thing!” as she charges Eleri £3.58 for her order.

"There's nothing like service with a smile"

“There’s nothing like service with a smile,” comments Eleri as she leaves;

"I'm happy here"

DJ suggests that Sioned should go home, but she insists that she is happy there.

“It doesn’t look like it,” he replies, but Sioned maintains that Rhys was looking for some gossip.

"He won't be the last one, either"

“He won’t be the last one, either,” DJ predicts.

"The samples are on the counter"

Mathew is at Bryntirion, informing Jason, “The van’s at APD and the samples are on the counter.”

"I've got things to do"

Jason complains that he has things to do, but Mathew has scaffolders waiting for him, so he cannot do it.

"This is one of our biggest jobs"

“Jason, we have to go – this is one of our biggest jobs – we can’t afford to make a mess of it.   Anita’s off all week – so there’s only you and me.

"You have to go, all right?"

“You have to go, all right?”

"I heard about Kelly"

Then he suddenly realises that Jason has his own problems;   “I’m sorry, Jase, I forgot to ask – I heard about Kelly.”

"What have you heard?"

Jason enquires what he has heard;  “About stealing the dogs at Penrhewl – it’s on the news – haven’t you heard?”

Jason was completely unaware of this and is told that there is an article in the Western Post.   “It says that Eileen has been charged with the shooting of Howard!”

"I didn't know anything about that!"

Jason does not know anything about this and Mathew wonders where he has been lately;  “Eileen has been charged with shooting Howard, who was trying to steal the hunting dogs from Penrhewl.   Kelly was helping him.”   Jason looks outraged.

Ffion is looking at houses . . .

Ffion is looking at properties in the window of Tomos ac Ellis

. . . as salesman Rhys comes out

when Rhys comes out of the door;  he asks if she has heard the news,

"Scandal!"

and she described it as ‘scandal’.

"A little bird tells me you want to sell"

“I’ve heard something else, too,” he goes on, “A little bird tells me you want to sell.”

"Stories spread quickly in this village"

She groans that stories spread quickly in the village and is surprised that he is still working there, now that Griffiths is selling up.   He explains that he still has to pay the bills in the meantime.

"I can save you a trip"

“Have you talked about selling Cysgod y Glyn with anyone?   I can save you a trip,” he volunteers,

"I'm in a hurry, Rhys"

but she is in rather a hurry.   “How about lunchtime?   I can come to you in school or at home.”

She tells him to come at 1:30pm

She concedes that they can have a quick chat if he calls in at about 1:30pm;

Rhys looks triumphant

Rhys looks rather pleased with himself.

Eileen looks miserable

At the other extreme, Eileen is scowling as she lounges on the sofa in her dressing gown after looking at her copy of the Western Post.   Sioned comes in;  “Please tell me you’ve moved since Susanna Reid!” she exclaims and Eileen demands what else she can do.

"Do some tidying up or cooking"

Sioned suggests tidying up or cooking, going out for some fresh air, as sitting there is not healthy;

"Back and forth from sofa to bed"

“All you’ve done for days is to go back and forth from the sofa to the bed.”

Eileen ask what her daughter would do;

"Celebrate the fact that I got bail"

“Celebrate the fact that I got bail,” is the reply, “They could have locked you up, but they didn’t – you’re home and you’re free – you should be happy.”

"While everyone in the village gossips about me"

“While everyone in the village gossips about me?” snarls Eileen, “I’ve read the article – everyone will know!”

"Innocent until proven guilty"

Sioned points out that they will know she has been charged, but reminds her mother, “Innocent until proven guilty.”

"And that terrible photo!"

“And that terrible photo!” Eileen shouts, flinging the newspaper across the room.

"Cool down, Mam"

Sioned urges her to cool down, but she moans, “It will go on and on for months until court –

"People will still be talking about me!"

“and until then people will still be talking about me, still think that I shot Howard deliberately!”

"Well, that's what you told me, anyway"

“But you didn’t – well, that’s what you told me, anyway,” Sioned replies, “You should hold your head up high – unless you’re lying.”   Eileen again is adamant that it was an accident.   “There we are then, why are you hiding?”

"What are you going to do?"

Eleri is once more at APD, asking if Jason has worked out what he is going to do;  “About Kelly, the money, the house?”   When he says that he has not, she continues, “So you’re just going to bury your head in the sand?”

"Do you actually want anything?"

He demands whether she wants anything, or if she is just going to stand there, poking her nose into his business.   She maintains that she is only trying to help, and offers to do the accounts while Anita is away.

Kelly is surprised to see her there"

Kelly comes in, surprised to see Eleri there;

"In thought I was taking Ifan to school"

“I thought I was taking Ifan to school today,” she tells Jason, but he has already done so.

"Were you with Howard . . ."

He confronts her;  “The evening of our wedding anniversary – the night you forgot – were you with Howard, the man who threatened you?

". . . the man who threatened to rape you?"

“The man who threatened to rape you?   Were you?”

"Can you give is five minutes, please?"

Eleri is caught in the middle of this until Kelly approaches her and requests, “Can you give us five minutes, please?”   Eleri asks if Jason will be all right on his own and when assured that he will be, she promises to see him later and struts out of APD.

Jason wants answers

Kelly and Jason look at each other.

"Just round the fields and back . . ."

Sioned has managed to persuade her mother to go outside;  “Just round the fields and back –

". . . we don't have to go near the village"

“we don’t have to go near the village,” she stresses.   Eileen declares that if she sees anyone, she will come straight home.

"Is it true that you shot him?"

Then Cassie arrives at the farm, informing them, “I’m on my way to visit Howard in hospital.   Is it true that you shot him?”

Sioned answers for her mother that it was not deliberate.

"After pretending to look for him"

“But she did it – after pretending to look for him with me, because she knew I was worried about him,” Cassie continues, “You didn’t want to find him, did you?

Sioned finds this shocking

“You knew he was in that shed the whole time and that he had been shot.   What came over you?”

"He and Kelly were trying to steal the dogs"

Eileen insists that he and Kelly were trying to steal the dogs – she does not know why.

"He doesn't deserve this"

“Howard has done some bad things, but he doesn’t deserve this,” says Cassie.

"I think you should go now"

Sioned takes charge;  “I think you should go now – we’ve said Mam didn’t do it deliberately!”

"We've all accidentally shot someone!"

“Of course – we’ve all raised a gun and accidentally shot someone!” sarcastically remarks Cassie.

"You''ll be up in court for libel!"   — no, Sioned, 'slander'

Sioned points out, “Unless the court says differently, Mam’s innocent – if you go around saying the contrary without proof, you’ll be up in court first for libel!”

Cassie chuckles to herself as she leaves the house.

Eileen sits down

Eileen sits down at the table

"I can't say I agree with what you've done . . ."

as Sioned growls, “Well, I can’t say I agree with what you’ve done,

". . . but we have to stick together – for the twins' sake"

“but we have to stick together now – for the twins’ sake.   I need you, Mam.”

"You didn't want to know me a few weeks ago"

She is reminded that she did not want to know her mother a few weeks ago;

"A lot has happened since then"

“A lot has happened since then,” Sioned reminds her.

"I did it for the dogs"

Kelly explains, “It wasn’t easy working with him – I did it for the dogs.”

"Dogs?   And chickens before that!"

Jason is dismissive;  “Dogs?   Can you hear yourself?   It was chickens before that!   You sound ridiculous – you tried to ‘spike’ him!”

"I don't expect you to understand"

Kelly does not expect Jason to understand,

"Can't you remember what you put every through?"

but he rants on, “Can’t you remember what you went through?   What you put everyone through?

"You spent our wedding anniversary with Howard!"

“Because I do – you spent our wedding anniversary with Howard!”

"Our marriage was over long before that!"

Kelly screams, “Our marriage was over before our wedding anniversary, Jase!   Why are we discussing this?   This is exactly why we’re not together!   Just let it go and move on!”

She marches off

She marches towards the door as Jason demands, “Is that what our marriage was to you – a joke?   It must have been –

"You don't give a damn about me . . ."

“you don’t give a damn about me!”

She squeals, “Of course I worry about you!”   He emphasises that he put her first through everything – even this money, now.

". . . perhaps you don't deserve a penny!"

“Perhaps what people are saying is true – that you don’t deserve a penny.”

"Who's saying that?"

She wants to know who is saying that

"You know I need that money!"

and warns him, “Don’t go back on your word – you know I need that money!”   She slams the door behind her.

"I'll come back for measurements and photos"

At Cysgod y Glyn, Rhys says that he will come back to do the measurements and suggests that Ffion can get rid of some of the stuff before they take the photos.

"It's not messy in here"

Ffion does not regard the place as messy, but he maintains that things can look different in photos

"It needs to be more neutral"

and that she needs it to look more ‘neutral’, so the new owner can imagine their stuff there – without all the clutter.

“Shall we say Thursday?” he asks,

"I haven't said I'm ready yet"

but she tells him to slow down, as she has not said that she is ready yet.   He warns her not to wait too long and is sure that he can help her to find somewhere else, in fact he can show her some options now.

"Detached, rural, garden, swimming pool?"

“What do you want – detached, rural, garden, swimming pool?”

"You're putting pressure on me, Rhys!"

Ffion angrily protests, “I don’t know yet, Rhys!    You’re putting pressure on me!   Look, it was a bad idea trying to rush it during my lunch break.   I’ll give you a ring when – well, if – I decide to sell through you.”

"I'm sorry"

Very disappointed, he apologises

Rhys slinks away . . .

and slinks out of the flat;

. . . and Ffion regrets what she said

Ffion feels that she has been harsh on him.

Kelly arrives at the hospital

Kelly gingerly enters the hospital ward and Howard is surprised to see her;  he says that he is much better than he was and Kelly has brought him some grapes.

"It was either grapes of daffs"

“It was either grapes or daffs, so . . .”

She announces that the cops have been to see her

"Are we in a lot of trouble?"

and he asks if they are in a lot of trouble.

"Ive told the cops everything"

“Who knows?   Eileen has threatened to press charges and I’ve told the cops everything.

"The vet said the dogs were in a hell of a state"

The vet in the sanctuary backed me up and said the dogs were in a hell of a state, but they are now improving, thank God.”

"I told them the truth – in the end"

Howard confesses that he told them the truth as well, “In the end,” so Kelly hopes that they will be all right.   “As long as Eileen doesn’t get us for trespassing,” he cautions.

"Our stories are straight"

“Anyway, if she presses charges, it’s her word against ours – our stories are straight,” say Kelly,

Cassie arrives

just as the door opens and Cassie comes in.

"She's not trying to get you to lie for her?"

“What stories?” she demands, “She’s not trying to get you to lie for her, is she?” Cassie asks Howard.

"We've told the cops the truth"

Kelly replies that it is the opposite;  they have told the cops the truth.

“What is the truth?   Whose daft idea was it to steal Penrhewl’s dogs?

"Who dragged Howard into this mess?"

“And who dragged Howard into this mess in the first place?   I have a good idea who did.”

Rhys is lounging in the flat

Rhys is sitting in the shop flat, looking at his phone, when Matthew comes in,

"Jason should have brought it over this morning"

complaining on the phone, “Jason should have brought it over this morning – all right, I’ll bring it over before the end of the day.”

"We said we'd try to keep this place tidy"

Then he looks at the state of the place and asks, “Rhys, come on – we said we’d try to keep this place tidy.”

"What's the point?"

Rhys urges him to calm down;  “What’s the point of going to work when I’m going to lose my job in the long run?”   He is told that there is no need to be like that;  if a new buyer wants to keep Tomos ac Ellis as it is,

"They won't want slobs who miss work"

they will not want slobs who miss work.

"I'm looking for Jason"

Mathew leaves the flat to try and locate Jason.

"It wasn't her fault"

Howard tries to explain to Cassie, “It wasn’t her fault – I’ve told you – I wanted to stop Eileen as much as she did.   Eileen made my life hell!”

"You don't have to take her side!"

Cassie replies that he does not have to take Kelly’s side and he insists that he is not.   “Only one person is responsible for what happened to me, the dogs, to Kelly – she’s the one you should be blaming!”

"In  a few more days, I'll be out of here"

Cassie asks how he is feeling and he says that the sepsis has cleared up;  in a few more days he will be out of there.   She asks where he will go and he answers, with a puzzled look, “Deri Fawr!”   Cassie does not like the thought of him being on his own, to which he points out that he cannot see his sisters looking after him – or his mother.

"There – he'll be on his own at Deri Fawr!"

She snarls at Kelly, “There we are, then he’ll be on his own at Deri Fawr!   On his own, if anything goes wrong.”

Kelly is regretful

Kelly looks suitably penitent,

"I shall be fine!"

while Howard insists that he will be fine.

Haven't seen that memorial before

Mathew walks past what looks like a War Memorial, which I cannot recall seeing before, and approaches Cysgod y Glyn.

"Have you seen Jason/'

He asks Ffion if she has seen Jason, which she has not, but appreciates that he has a lot on his mind at the moment.

"Nobody has see him on the jobs today"

“Nobody has seen him on the jobs today – although he seemed all right earlier,” Mathew goes on.

"Perhaps he's been held up"

Ffion surmises that he may have been held up on a job;  he walks away as she is about to go into her flat.

"Something smells nice"

DJ comes into the farmhouse, remarking that something smells nice;  Sioned informs him, “Mam is making cawl,” and he assumes that she is feeling better.

"I'm taking one step at a time"

She replies that she is taking one step at a time.

"She's coming to the village with me tomorrow"

“And she’s coming to the village with me tomorrow,” Sioned announces, although her mother maintains that she has not decided yet.   “Well, I’m not taking no for an answer – so you don’t have a choice!” she is told.

"Should you go?"

“Should you go with her to the village?’ asks DJ, when Eileen has gone to check on Huwi-John.

"She has to face people some time"

Sioned says that she has to face people some time.   “You don’t want people to think we support what she did,” he warns.

"This could drag on for months"

Sioned reminds him that Eileen is her mother;  “This could drag on for months – we don’t have a court date yet.   It could last a year and we don’t want Mam like this the whole time – underfoot, needing care – especially when the twins arrive.

"I'm doing this for us, DJ"

“We’ll need a grandmother, not another child – I’m doing this for us, DJ.”

"Diane hasn't seen Jason either"

Kelly reports to Mathew that Ifan is with Diane, but she has not seen Jason either;  Mathew is still trying to contact Jason by phone, without success.

"Was he all right when you saw him?"

“Was he all right when you saw him?” he asks.

"We had a tiff"

Kelly says that they had a tiff;  “You know what Jason’s like – he will have gone for a walk to clear his head – and he’s only been gone a couple of hours.   You know what he’s like without his phone – useless.”

"Did you quail over this Eileen stuff?"

“Did you quarrel over this Eileen stuff?” Mathew enquires;  he is told that it was about the divorce, when Jason threatened not to give Kelly any money.

"He was stressed, Math – but we all are"

“He was stressed, Math – but we all are,” she replies.

"I was much too pushy"

Rhys arrives again at Cysgod y Glyn, apologising about earlier;  “I was much too pushy,” he confesses.

"I just panicked"

Ffion insists that she should be apologising for snapping at him – she just panicked.

“About moving – it’s a big step for me.   I’ve lived here for so long, it will be in the end of an era if I leave.

"A lot has happened here"

Rhys recalls that a lot has happened there

"This is the only home Arwen has had . . ."

and she adds, “This is the only home Arwen has had –

". . . when you talked about someone else living here . . ."

“so when you talked about someone else living here, it hit me.”

"I shouldn't have tried to rush you"

He realises that he should not have tried to rush her, but she appreciates that he was only doing his job;

"Perhaps it's what I needed"

“Perhaps it’s what I needed.”

He maintains that change can be good sometimes and asks whether she has talked it over with Arwen.   “She’s fed up with this place,” Ffion groans,

"Moving may he the answer for both of you"

so he suggests that moving may be the answer for both of them.

"You're much better when you're not being pushy"

“You’re much better when you’re not being pushy,” she smiles, “Next week!   Arrange the photos and put this place on the market next week – it will give me time to tidy up a bit – and make the place more ‘neutral’ – with less clutter.   If not now – when?   And like you said, a change can be good – thanks for being patient with me.”

"Although I can be a bit pushy!

Rhys thanks her for trusting him, “Although I can be a bit pushy!”

Mathew comes through the alley . . .

Mathew is still attempting to contact Jason as he comes through the alley

. . . and meets Kelly

where Kelly meets up with him;  neither of them have seen any sign of Jason.

"He'd better have a good reason for missing work!"

“He’d better have a good reason for missing work!” Mathew snarls.   Kelly tells him to forget about Jason and to go and enjoy his evening.

They hear a strange noise

Then they hear the sound of a taxi arriving outside the Deri;

Jason is singing drunkenly

Jason, who appears to have had more than a few drinks and is singing, is accompanied by Eleri.

“I thought you didn’t want people to see us together,” she reminds him.

“I don’t care – perhaps they’ll learn something,” he replies, as they go into the Deri, “I’ve had the best day!”

"The day's not over yet!"

Eleri assures him that it is not over yet.

They look at each other

Kelly and Mathew look aghast at this scene.
