DJ arrives at the deli . . .

DJ arrives at the deli and unlocks the door;  

. . . about to start work

he looks around and mutters, “Right,” before starting work.

"How about this one?"

At Llwyncelyn, Hywel is showing Esther some new clothes he has bought for her, but she is seriously not impressed.   When he asks what she thinks, 

"I don't like the colour, pattern or shape"

she comprehensively replies, “I don’t like the colour, the pattern or the shape,” which leaves him rather discouraged.

"It looks like I'm going back to Carmarthen, then"

“Well, it looks like I’m going back to Carmarthen,” he grumbles 

"I like the clothes I already have"

as she protests that she likes the clothes she already has.   He insists that as it is the Summer holidays, she ought to have new clothes, but she is adamant that it should not be those.

"We're going to be later for the Holiday Club"

“Come on – we’re going to be late for the Holiday Club,” she urges him;  he picks up his bags of shopping and his suede jacket to follow her.

"Are you open yet?"

DJ has just put on his apron when the door opens and Mathew enquires whether he is open yet.   “Not yet, but I will be in a minute,” is the reply, “I’m back to the normal hours this week.”

Mathew asks how Sioned is and is told that she is recovering;  “Give, her my love,” says Mathew.   

"There's a lot to do before opening"

DJ feels as if he should have been there an hour earlier because there is a lot to do before opening.   “Yes, I need to go, too,” realises Mathew, looking at his watch, 

"Do you want me to turn this sign round?"

“Do you want me to turn this sign round?”   DJ gets to work.

"I'm tired of seeing this"

Cassie carries a large cardboard box to the bar and tells Kath that she is tired of seeing it around the pub.   It is the lost property box and she intends to sort it out today.

"We have a stocktake to do today"

Kath objects that they have a stocktake to do, but Cassie’s response is, “Surely we can do more than one thing in a day – if there are phone numbers on some of these, I’ll phone them.”

Kath goes to have a look, in case there is anything interesting, and the rest can go to Apêl Maenan.   

Where has Anita been?

Anita, who we have not seen for quite a while, comes in;  “I thought I’d pop in to see how you are and catch up a bit,” she says, 

Kath finds this rather distasteful

just as Kath finds a single sock in the box and holds it up with a look of disgust.

"Look – it's Ieuan's!"

“Hold on – yes, look – it’s Ieuan’s!” Anita exclaims.   

"Why would he take off his socks in the Deri?"

Kath wonders why on earth Ieuan Griffiths would take off his socks in the Deri, and Cassie is amazed that there is a name label in the sock.

"His mother insisted he should label everything"

“His mother insisted that he should label every item of clothing he owned,” Anita explains, “Throw it away, will you?   Can I have a takeaway coffee, please?

“How are things going here, then?” she continues, “It looks as if you’re having fun.”   

"Two important jobs in one day?"

Kath complains that Cassie wants to do two important jobs in one day, and Cassie in turn reminds her that if they do it today, there will be less to do tomorrow.

“Yes, I’d forgotten how much fun it is to work here,” Anita recalls, “Not all the time – but on the whole, yes.   You two wouldn’t have bought the place otherwise.”

"Do these belong to him as well?"

Kath has been delving deep into the box and come up with a pair of pink fluffy handcuffs [apparently last seen on 17 July 2014].   “Do these belong to Griffiths as well?” she demands, but Anita refuses to say a word about that.

Jason is looking at more house details

In APD, Jason is looking at the details of a house on the Tomos ac Ellis website when the door opens 

"I've got an order for you"

and Howard asks if it is safe to come in.   “I’ve got an order for you – I’ve folded the pages in the catalogue.”   

"Why didn't you write in on a piece of paper?"

Jason takes a look at what he has there, suggesting that he should write it all down on a piece of paper.   

"It's easier this way"

Howard maintains that it is easier for him this way.

"What's he doing here?"

Anita walks in, with her takeaway coffee, and immediately exclaims, “What’s he doing here?”   It is explained that Howard is there to order building materials, and Jason will have to order in a few things.   

"You're not accepting his business, surely?"

“You’re not accepting his business, surely?” she continues.

"Can you leave this to me, please?"

“Anita, can you leave this to me, please?” Jason replies, and should be able to deliver at the end of the week.   “Are you are paying now?” he asks, but Howard would like him to send an invoice.

"What on earth are you doing, Jason?"

As he leaves, Anita is shaking her head in disbelief;  “What on earth are you doing, Jason, after everything he did to Kelly?” she snarls.

Jason informs her that he has promised Kelly that he is going to leave Howard alone;  

"I'd be no better than him"

“If I dealt with him my way, I’d be in jail – and no better than him.”   She is still adamant that Jason should not be accepting his business – 

"He shouldn't be allowed anywhere near the place"

in fact he should not be allowed anywhere near the place.

"Au contraire, Anita"

“Au contraire, Anita, the least we can do is to accept his business – and now there’s no trade discount for Howard – oops!   

"I promised Kelly I'd leave him alone"

“I’m not happy he’s around the place, either, but I promised Kelly I’ll leave him alone – and that’s what I intend to do.   She is the important one here, isn’t she – not us?”

"Have you been looking at this house?"

Then Anita sees what is displayed on the laptop;  “Have you been looking at this house?” and he tells her that Kelly wanted to go and see it, as it has just come on the market.   

"Jason, that's lovely!"

Anita is delighted;  “You’re going to buy a house?   Jason, that’s lovely!   That’s exactly what Kelly needs – something positive and a new chapter.”

"I didn't go"

Then he breaks the news that he did not go to see it and she cannot understand why;  

Jason finds it difficult to answer

he finds it difficult to answer that question.

Hywel displays one of the dresses

In the Deri, Hywel is displaying one of the dresses he bought for Esther;  

"Good grief, Hywel!"

“Good grief!” says Cassie, “Esther is young and ‘cool’,” but he considers that it is pretty.   

"This is the sort of thing you should get"

Kath shows him something on her phone and suggests that this is the sort of thing he should get her.

“Yes, she was wearing something similar when we went out to eat,” comments Cheryl.   Hywel does not want to buy the same old things, but Kath insists that he does want to buy something she will like.

"This is available in Carmarthen"

Cassie has also been looking on her phone and announces, “This is available in her size at the shop in Carmarthen right now.”   Cheryl enquires as to what she should do with all the lost property, and is told that it can go to Apêl Maenan.

"Can I sell them online?"

“There’s some good stuff here – can I sell them online?   We can share the profit,” Cheryl suggests.   

"As long as they're out of here"

As far as Cassie is concerned, she can sell the lot, as long as they are out of the Deri.   Hywel has to take this stuff back to the shop, 

"All right – a half, then"

but is persuaded to have half a pint before he goes.

Anita points out that the house has a lot of potential, something which Jason already knows;  

"It could be the perfect home"

“It could be the perfect home,” he says, 

"Why are you refusing to buy a house with her?"

so she demands why he is looking at the photos, if he refuses to buy a house with her.

"I don't know what to do"

“I’m not refusing to buy a house with her,” he protests, “I don’t know what to do.”  

"Kelly's not happy with the situation"

 Anita reminds him that Kelly is not happy with the situation as it is – so what is stopping him?

“For one thing, I haven’t got a hope in hell of getting a mortgage with my credit history.”   Anita realises that this is a result of the gambling and wonders if he has talked to anyone.   

"I have a financial advisor"

She imagines that perhaps there is a way;  she has a financial advisor.

Jason is not interested, but she continues, “You might be able to get a mortgage if you talk to a professional.”   

He insists that he does not want to, but Anita goes on and on, as she does, “You can’t bury your head in the sand – what’s so hard about talking to someone?”

"All the damage I've done to people by gambling"

“I don’t want to talk to someone because I don’t want to be reminded of all the damage I’ve done to people by gambling – all right?” he shouts.

"You need to get things in order, Jason"

She will not give up, but maintains that he needs to get things in order;  

"What about Ifan's future?"

“What about Ifan?   What about his future?   Look, the sooner you deal with this, the better,” she says, 

Anita gives him the phone number

as she writes down the telephone number and gives it to him.   “Have a word with her, just to see what your options are,” she instructs him.

DJ is dejected

DJ sits behind the counter at the deli, looking discouraged;  his phone sounds 

There is a call from Sioned 

and he sees that Sioned is calling;  “Hiya – are you OK?   Did you sleep all right?   

"I've been open since nine"

“I’ve been open since nine on the dot – Mathew was my first customer and he was asking about you.   It’s been all right here, but the lunch rush hasn’t started yet – 

"That's when we shall make our fortune"

“that’s when we shall make our fortune.”

Cassie asks what Hywel is panicking 

"I can't do anything right with her"

and he replies, “I can’t do anything right with her.”   

"Don't be so hard on yourself"

Cassie can say that the clothes are a bit old-fashioned, but he should not be so hard on himself.

"I should know what she wants, what she likes"

“I’m her father – I should know what she wants, what she likes,” says Hywel, and is told that he needs to ask for help.   “But it’s my responsibility in the end – and I want to be a better father to Esther than I was to Rhys,” he groans, “He hates me most of the time.”

"She's turned out better than many in this village"

“Look, Esther has turned out better than many in this village,” Cassie reminds him, “You should be proud of that.   She thinks the world of her father – everyone knows that.”

"You should have seen her when I showed those clothes"

“You should have seen her when I showed her the clothes,” he answers, and Cassie does not blame her, but offers her help if he needs it – especially when it comes to clothes.   

"Off to Carmarthen again"

He leaves for Carmarthen with his bags.

"Who fancies lunch in the deli?"

Mathew comes into APD and asks, “Who fancies lunch in the deli?   I’m paying.   I want to support DJ – it’s his first day back.”   Anita is in favour of this, 

"I think I'll stay here"

but Jason is going to stay there.   

"Don't forget that phone call, Jason"

Of course before she goes, she reminds Jason to make that phone call and he looks sadly at the paper.

"This looks like real suede"

“This looks expensive, doesn’t it?” comments Kath, “It looks like real suede.   Extra large, but nothing to say who owns it.”

Cheryl has wasted no time in listing it on the Internet, 

"£11 for the scarf – all right?"

and within a matter of minutes has had an offer of £11 on a scarf.   “We can get a takeaway with that,” says Kath.

"We'll do the kitchen after the cellar"

Cassie decides that they need to do the kitchen after the cellar and then an offer appears on the jacket – 

"£75!"

£75 – which surprises all of them, and will be enough for them to have a night out.

“And you’re getting a promotion as well,” Cassie announces, 

"You can have half the profits"

“You’re in charge of lost property from now on – you can have half the profits.”   

"Half?   That's 50%, Cassie!"

Kath considers that is rather a generous amount.

DJ brings the orders

DJ comes from the deli kitchen with the orders for Mathew and Anita;  

"You're the only customers I've had today"

“Thanks for coming – you’re the only customers I’ve had today.”   

Anita is convinced that people will come once they realise he has opened again;  “Have you put it on social media?   You have announce these things – do it now.”   

"I won't take more than £20 today!"

DJ replies that Sioned deals with that sort of thing, and is worried that he will not take more than £20 today.

"I'll order another one for Jason – and one for dinner"

Mathew decides that he is going to order a takeout as well;  “For Jason – he’ll have one of these – it looks nice.   And I’ll take another one to have for dinner.”

"There's no need to feel sorry for me"

DJ protests that there is no need to feel sorry for him, but Mathew stresses that it will save him cooking 

"It looks better than anything I could make"

and also looks better than anything he could make.

Anita suggests he should think of something to attract people, but Mathew’s idea of ‘Pay what you like’ is rejected by Anita, 

"No – Kelly tried that!"

as Kelly tried that and it definitely did not work.

“How about appealing to families?”   DJ dismisses children eating for free, as he would lose money, 

"How about a loyalty card?"

and then loyalty cards are suggested.   “Every time someone spends a specific amount they get a stamp on their card and when they have got so many stamps they get a discount or something.”

"Yes, I like the sound of that . . ."

DJ quite likes that idea, reasoning that it is a way of getting customers back time after time and it would not cost him anything.   

". . . it's certainly worth a try"

It is certainly worth a try.

Cheryl's sales are ready for posting

Cheryl has bagged up various items from the lost property box and Kath thanks her for all her help today;  “We can start arranging that night out out now – I’m looking forward to it.”

"Hywel, you've lost what?"

She answers the phone as Cheryl picks up all the parcels to take them to be posted;  “Hywel, you’ve lost what?   Have you?   

"Light-coloured, real suede"

“What kind is it?   Light-coloured, real suede, extra large, you say?   

They realise what has happened . . .

“Hang on a minute.”

. . . andKath points at the parcel

She looks at Cheryl and points to the parcel, then resumes her conversation;  

"Sorry, there's no sign of it"

“Sorry, Hywel, there’s no sign of it – on the bar?   No, there’s nothing here, sorry.   

"I'll keep an eye out, of course"

“I’ll keep an eye out for it, of course.”

Then she urgently instructs Cheryl, “Go now, before we get caught – go on!”

Cheryl makes a hasty exit

and she rushes out of the Deri.   

"Everything all right, Kath?"

Kath reports to Cassie that everything is quiet there.

DJ has quickly invented an app

DJ brings Mathew the items he has ordered and has come up with a design for the loyalty card;  Anita is glad that she could help.   “It reminds me of the time I worked here with Meic,” she reminisces, “And then Kelly – 

"It's nice to know I've still got it"

“it’s nice to know that I’ve still got it.”

Mathew will pay for the meal 

"Thanks for this, mate"

and DJ thanks him for his generous gesture.   

"I'll definitely be back tomorrow"

“The food was lovely and I will definitely be back tomorrow,” Mathew tells him.

"Are you sure you like everything now?"

Esther is very pleased with the replacement clothes;  “Are you sure you like everything now?” Hywel demands 

'They're lush, Dad"

and she describes them as ‘lush’.

"Mind you don't grow for a while"

He is relieved to hear that and warns her not to grow for a while;  he also got himself something after losing that jacket and asks for her evaluation.   

"Give me a twirl . . ."

“Give me a twirl,” she tells him, 

". . . yes, very smart!"

adding that he looks very smart.   

"I'm going to wear this top to Keira's party"

“I’m going to wear this top to Keira’s party next week – with jeans – but not this pair,” she says.

Hywel realises that he has a lot to learn, and Esther will help him;  “We are all right, aren’t we?” he says, 

"Yes, we are all right, Dad"

and she agrees that they are.

"Was there paint on the list I gave you?"

Howard comes back into APD, where Jason is looking at his phone;  “I just wanted to check – was there paint on that list I gave you?” 

"Yes, Howard, there was paint"

and Jason assures him that there was.   

Then Anita comes in, enquiring if he has spoken to that financial advisor.

"I have no hope of getting a mortgage"

“Yes, and as I expected, I have no hope of getting a mortgage,” he replies.   

Howard does some eavesdropping

Howard has not yet reached the door and stops to listen to what they are saying.   

"More red flags that 'Parc y Scarlets'!"

“I’ve got more red flags than ‘Parc y Scarlets’!” [Rugby Union stadium in Llanelli]  Jason goes on, and does not know how long before those red flags expire.

"If I won the lottery, I'd give it all to you"

“Oh, I am sorry, Jason – if I won the lottery, I’d give it all to you,” says Anita, and he is pleased that the matter is now out in the open.

"Kelly can't have what she deserves because of me!"

“Kelly can’t have what she deserves because of me!” Jason snarls, 

Howard quietly leaves

and Howard finally leaves the shop.
