Gaynor is 'tickling the ivories'

Gaynor is nostalgically playing a few notes on the piano at Llwyncelyn when Hywel comes into the house.

"Did Esther take her reading folder?"

She asks, “Did Esther take her reading folder?   I forgot to write in it.”   Hywel assures her that he did so.

"Izzy spent hours at this piano"

“Izzy spent hours at this piano – she insisted on playing this piece over and over again until it was perfect – I still can’t listen to Ave Maria.   Lois threw it in the bin in the end.”   She is in tears as she closes the piano lid;

"It's all too quiet now"

“It’s all too quiet now – is it time to go?”

He confirms that it is, and also that he will be there for her;  she is very grateful for that.

"I just can't believe he refused it!"

At Bryntirion, Griffiths is still going on about Siôn;  “I just can’t believe he refused it!”

"I didn't want the book that much, anyway"

and Anita is getting tired of this already, insisting that she did not want the book that much anyway.

"It's the principle"

“It’s the principle,” he protests, “I’m a councillor who goes out of his way to help local businesses!”

"This is Siôn White we're talking about"

Anita reminds him that this is Siôn White they are talking about, and how childish he can be.

“It’s bad enough he refused the voucher because it was a couple of days out of date, but he knew that it was a present for Mami!   It was the last present I bought her.”

Anita urges him not to let Siôn upset him,

"I won't let him win!"

but he growls, “It’s too late for that now!   I won’t let him win!”   When she asks what he is going to do, he is not sure yet, “But this isn’t the last chapter – understand?”

"All this over a book token?"

Anita shakes her head in disbelief.

"Our lodger was back with us"

As they sit on the bench by the alley, Jason tells Tyler, “Our lodger was back with us this morning,” but Tyler thought that he had moved out.   “He has, officially,” Jason adds.

"So you're offering bed and breakfast?"

“Ah, so you’re offering bed and breakfast, so he can have a word in the ear of Bethania’s developers?” Tyler deduces, but that is denied, as it would annoy everybody else in the community.

"Right, back to work"

Now they have to get to work, and Tyler maintains that he would have voted against it if he was entitled to vote.

“I didn’t realise you were a chapel-goer,” says Jason,

"It's safer in the hands of people like Megan"

but Tyler argues that the building is safer in the hands of people like Megan, rather than Ieuan Griffiths and Rhys.   “Perhaps Megan should do something to stop Sioned from opening this arcade!” Jason comments.

Rhys is selling off the chapel contents

As they are about to go into APD, they hear Megan’s raised voice, protesting against the selling off of the contents of the chapel.   Rhys has set up a stall in front of the building,

"It's a lack of respect!"

and she vociferously objects, “The problem is, it’s a lack of respect!   The sale has not gone through yet.”

"It's only a matter of time, Megan"

Rhys replies that it is only a matter of time;  “The developers have asked us to sell the possessions, and local people have the first chance.”

Cassie fancies a hymn board . . .

Cassie appears to be showing interest in one of the hymn boards, and he suggests that he can give her a good price for that.

. . . which would look nice in the Deri

She thought that it would look nice in the Deri, and he agrees, “A part of Bethania remaining in the village.”

"In a pub?"

Megan, however, objects most strongly to it being displayed in a pub.

Rhys has a phone call . . .

Rhys receives a phone call, summoning him to see Griffiths,

. . . and leaves Brynmor in charge

so he asks Brynmor to look after things for five minutes.

"There's no point bothering, Megan"

Megan is becoming increasingly upset, and Cassie comments, “People like Rhys make stealing from your grandmother look like a favour.   There’s no point bothering.”

"I'm trying to sell Bethania's stuff"

Rhys reports to Griffiths in the Deri;  “What’s wrong?   I’m trying to sell Bethania’s stuff.”   Now his employer has another job for him.

"How can I blacken Siôn White's name?"

“How can I blacken Siôn White’s name?” he demands,

"It was only worth £10"

and Rhys is surprised that he is still going on about that book voucher, which was only worth £10.

“Perhaps, but that’s not the point – its the principle of the matter –

"He made a fool of Anita"

“he made a fool of Anita.   All she wanted was Caryl Lloyd’s book.”

"Caryl Lewis, actually

Rhys corrects him that it is actually ‘Caryl Lewis’.

“If I had a copy of the book, I would know that –

"How can I make a fool out of Siôn?"

“now, then, how can I make a fool out of Siôn – publicly?” he continues, “You’ve had experience in using social media.”

"I don't want to get involved"

Rhys does not want to get involved in this,

"I'm more than willing to take the blame"

but Griffiths assures him that whatever happens, he is more than willing to take the blame.

"There are a few things we can do"

Rhys is evidently convinced and says there are a few things they can do.

Kelly is doing some investigative journalism

As Kelly attempts, unsuccesssfully, to peer in through the window of the garage office, Jason is convinced that there is a story here somewhere.

"The village wins an arcade but loses a chapel"

“The village wins an arcade but loses a chapel.”

“I could write a cover story with a double-page spread – but I have to be sure first,” she tells him,

"Can I help you?"

and Sioned comes round the corner, wondering if she can help them.

"We're a bit worried, Sioned"

Jason points out that they are a bit worried, and Kelly takes over, “You’re taking advantage of young people and turning them into gambling addicts – it’s disgusting, actually!”

"I won't force anyone to use it"

Sioned answers that she is not going to force anyone to use her business;

"A problem for a gambling addict"

Jason points out, “I know that – having slot machines on the doorstep is going to be a problem for a gambling addict, for example.”   Sioned says that they do not know what machines they will be.

“Brynmor told us,” says Kelly,

"If Brynmor said that, it must be true!"

and Sioned sarcastically remarks that if Brynmor said it, it must be true.   Now she has some work to do – a new machine is arriving.

"Just watch me!"

“We won’t let you do this!” declares Kelly, but Sioned maintains there is nothing they can do to stop her.   “Just watch me!” Kelly threatens, “Nobody will be here supporting you at the grand opening – we’ll be protesting!”

Now she will go inside

Unconcerned, Sioned informs that there will be cake and bubbles waiting for them, and only when they are safely out of sight, she opens the office door.

Britt is relaxing, again

Britt is taking it easy at Penrhewl and has just finished a phone call

"He's still got a high temperature"

when Eileen comes back into the room, carrying some Calpol;  “He’s still got a high temperature, but he’s sleeping,” she says.

"Huwi left his coat at school"

Britt tells her, “Huwi’s teacher has just been on the phone – Miss Leah – she said Huwi left his coat at school, in case you’re worried.

"She said that Huwi's grandmother left in a hurry"

She said that Huwi’s grandmother had left in a rush earlier.”

Eileen is offended

This immediately puts Eileen in a bad humour

"You've taken hours to do this"

and she complains, “These orders – I finish them in an hour, but you’ve taken hours.   I’ll finish them now – and you can start on the cowshed – it needs a power wash.”

"I don't have time for that!"

When Britt protests that she does not have time,

"I have to look after Huwi!"

she is informed that she has no choice;  “I have to look after Huwi!”

"All right – I'll do it now, Granny!"

“All right, all right – I’ll do it now, Granny!” jokes Britt, but instead she gets out her phone and makes a call;

"Can you be at Penrhewl in half an hour?"

“Can you be up at Penrhewl in half an hour?”

Trade must be flat at the bookshop

Siôn is deploying a notice outside the bookshop, reading ‘Book a Month for Half Price!’ when Kelly comes to speak to him about to him about Sioned’s new venture.   “An arcade instead of a chapel?” he agrees.

"Whatever next?   A strip club?"

“Whatever next?   A strip club?” Kelly demands, “Auntie Marian would be turning in her grave – I’ll text you the details.”   Then

Rhys seems very engrossed in his phone

Siôn notices Rhys sitting on the bench opposite, looking at his phone.

After the funeral, Gaynor is sitting, looking at photos of Izzy, when Esther returns with Hywel,

"I thought you'd be at the Deri"

who assumed that she would be in the Deri with Colin and the others.   “No, I didn’t fancy it,” she replies, “Britt had to go back to work anyway – I just wanted to come home.”

"Is this Izzy?"

“Is this Izzy?” asks Esther,

"She's so pretty"

“She’s so pretty.

"Are you sad?"

“Are you sad?” and Gaynor says that she is, a little bit,

Esther gives her a hug . . .

so Esther gives her a hug.

. . . and a sweet

“Sweets always make me feel better when I’m sad,” she goes on, and Gaynor smiles.   Hywel is also looking happier.

The result of Rhys' work on the phone

Rhys has been doctoring a photo he took of Siôn outside his shop, and the notice now reads ‘I like conning people’.   Siôn has taken this to Jinx,

Jinx finds this rather amusing

who tries to hide his sniggers, and points out that 59 people have already liked it – which then goes up to 60.

"I wasn't conning anyone!"

“What am I supposed to do?” asks Siôn, “The voucher had run out – the date could clearly be seen – I wasn’t conning anyone!”

"They're obviously playing dirty"

Jinx concludes that they are obviously playing dirty, and Siôn suggests that he could go to the police,

"Do you really want to do that?"

but Jinx asks if he really wants to do that.   Siôn admits that it will take up too much time, and he wants to strike back now, and that is why he is at Cysgod y Glyn – to get Jinx’s help

"There's more than one way to skin a cat"

“I can’t do clever things like this,” he replies, “Griffiths has a former ‘influencer’ on his team.”   Siôn is sure that there is more than one way to skin a cat, wondering if Jinx has half an hour to spare.

Kath's house is looking like a junkyard again

It was obviously a bad idea to leave Brynmor in charge of the chapel contents, as many of them seem to have been transferred to Maes-y-Deri.   “Rhys was selling them for a good price,” he says, as he brings some more items into the house.

“I take it that the pupit is outside?” Kath remarks,

"That would have been great for you when you're preaching!"

and he says that would have been great for her when she is ‘preaching’.   She warns him that she has not started yet.

Gwyneth is back . . .

Then Gwyneth arrives again;  “I wasn’t clear enough the other day, was I?” Kath snarls,

. . . to return the money to Brynmor . . .

but she has come to return the money to Brynmor,

. . . but he will not take it

who will not accept it.

“I see you’ve been buying at Bethania,” she continues, and Brynmor confesses that he cannot help himself.   “You could always upcycle them – old drawers like this can go for a fortune after a coat of paint.”

"Was there anything else?"

Kath glares at her, and she realises she has outstayed her welcome,

"Right, I'd better go"

so she leaves the house.

Eileen is using barbed wire

Eileen is struggling with a length of barbed wire to repair a fence when DJ arrives;

"You look like you do do with some help"

“You look like you could do with some help,” he remarks, but she does not want him to get into trouble with Sioned.   He takes off his jacket and predicts that it will not take long.

"I appreciate you're not awkward around me"

“I appreciate the fact you’re not awkward around me after everything,” she says,

"Go and look after Huwi"

and he tells her to go and look after Huwi, as the boy will want his mother when he wakes up.

"Or his grandmother!"

“Or his grandmother!” she groans, “A teacher at the school mistook me for his grandmother – it made me feel old and lonely.”

"Look after yourself, Eileen"

He offers to talk to Sioned, but she tells him not to do that, maintaining that she is all right.   “Look after yourself,” he says as she walks away.

Megan is downhearted

In the Deri, Kelly is sitting at the bar when Megan comes in, looking very depressed, and admits that she was far away.   “I’m glad I’ve seen you, actually,” says Kelly, “I’m organising a protest against Sioned’s arcade.”

"Some of us are still fighting to keep Bethania"

Megan groans, “Some of us are still fighting to keep Bethania,”

"You have to let it go, Megan"

but Kelly advises that she has to let it go.

Surely you mean 179 years, Megan

“Let it go?   The chapel’s been there 125 years!” Megan protests, (though in a previous episode, she was looking up at the chapel, with the date 1843 clearly displayed).

"You don't need a building to do good work"

Kelly reminds her that things change;  “You don’t need a building to do good work these days.”

"It's a tradition, a community"

Megan protests that Bethania is more than that – it is a tradition, community, companionship.

"Look around – the community is still here"

“Megan, take a look around – the community is still here;  Jinx is running the Sunday school, me and Jase are trying to stop the gambling hub, you do amazing stuff with Apêl Maenan – Siôn is . . . well, you know, Siôn is being Siôn!   I know it’s sad, OK, but it’s not the end – and the members have voted to sell, so it’s going to happen.   Don’t waste your energy on something that you can’t control – good things can happen when you just decide to move on.”

"This is for you to put up on the wall"

Cassie returns to the bar with a box of crisps, and Megan presents her with the hymn board;  “This is for you to put up on the wall –

"Perhaps Rhys is right in one way"

“perhaps Rhys is right in one way – it’s important to have a part of Bethania in the centre of the village, in order to remember it for ever.”

"I'm sure Reg and Jean will look after it"

Cassie replies, “I’m sure that Reg and Jean will look after it for you.”   Siôn and Jinx come in,

She deliberately ignores Siôn

and Megan completely ignores Siôn as she leaves the pub.

The latest bout in the feud

Siôn is very keen to show Cassie what Jinx has produced on his phone;  a cartoon of Griffiths, captioned, ‘what are these?’

"We've gone viral!"

“We’ve gone ‘viral’!” he exclaims, but Jinx points out that 150 ‘likes’ is not quite ‘viral’.   “Did you like the hashtag ‘#stupidcouncillor’?” Siôn asks, “That was my idea.”

"All this over a book token?"

Kelly is not impressed;  “All this over a book token?” she says, but Siôn regards it as a matter of principle.

"I don't want any trouble"

“Speak of the devil – what will you have, Mr Griffiths?” asks Cassie, warning that she does not want any trouble.

"This could make the front page!"

Kelly maintains that this could make the front page of the Western Post.

"Are you sure you want to take me on?"

“Right, are you sure you want to take me on?” snarls Griffiths, “You’re a brave man if you do.”

"I'm not scared of you!"

Siôn makes it quite clear that he is not scared of Ieuan.

“I’m willing to give you one more chance – let Anita have her book!” is his challenge.

"With pleasure – but I want her to pay £7.99"

“Fine, with pleasure, but I want her to pay £7.99,” is the reply.

"You're going to regret this!"

Griffiths promises that Siôn is going to regret this, but as he turns to leave,

"Cowardly, unprincipled bully!"

is told, “I don’t think so – it’s about time someone stood up to a cowardly, unprincipled bully like you.”

Looking around, Griffiths say, “You’re all witnesses – I’m sure my solicitor we want a word with you when he takes up my case.   Good luck, Siôn – you’ll need it!”

"Half a pint for Jinx"

When he has gone, Siôn buys Jinx half a pint.

How come Britt knows this Howard?

Britt has contacted Howard to do her cowshed work for her, and when she pays him, he complains, “That’s what you gave me for the last shed – this one has been a lot more work – give me another fiver.”

She hands over another fiver

She does so, and he says he will try to keep his mouth shut;  anyway,

"I don't intend to stick around"

he does not intend to stick around for people to find out.

Britt asks where he is going,

"Keep your nose out!"

and he tells her to keep her nose out;  then they hear Eileen’s voice,

She is praised by Eileen

and Britt is praised for doing a good job, and for looking after Huwi when he woke up.   She said that she wanted to phone home and check how Colin was after the funeral this morning.

"I forgot about the funeral"

Eileen had completely forgotten about that.   “Colin and Gaynor were brave – they didn’t want a fuss,” Britt tells her.

"You're a good liar"

When Eileen goes back to the house, Howard reappears, complimenting her on being a good liar.   “I have to be, working with her,” is Britt’s reply.

Cassie installs the hymn board

The hymn board from the chapel has been installed in the Deri, and DJ regards it as rather odd, having chapel stuff in a pub.   He is expecting Sioned to join him later,

Sioned is not happy . . .

and at that moment she comes in, not looking happy.

. . . and DJ is immediately aware of that

“DJ said you were busy preparing for the opening night,” says Cassie, and Sioned asks for an orange juice;

"Let's go and sit down"

they go to sit down,

"It's the time of the month!"

where Sioned announces to DJ that it is ‘the time of the month’.

She had thought that perhaps . . .

"We've only been trying for a month"

but he reassures her that they have only been trying for a month, and that it will happen for them.

"I think I'll have the burger tonight"

“I think I’ll have the burger tonight,” she says.

"Pint, please"

The next one in through the door is Howard, who orders a pint.

"I didn't catch your name"

“I’ve seen you around but I didn’t catch your name,” Cassie tells him.   He replies rather abruptly that is because he has not told her,

"I want a pint, not a friend"

and that he wants a pint, not a friend.

He looks at Mathew's business card

He takes from his pocket a business card, that of Mathew Price from APD.

Gaynor comes downstairs . . .

When she comes downstairs in her dressing gown, Gaynor finds a picture on the table, drawn by Esther,

. . . and finds a picture by Esther . . .

representing herself and Gaynor on the ground and Izzy up in the sky.

. . . which makes her smile

This brings tears to her eyes, but she smiles.
