Megan is concerned as she looks up . . . |
Megan stands,
. . . at Bethania |
looking up at Bethania, and appears very concerned.
Anita is making the coffee |
At Bryntirion, Anita is pouring out the coffee when Griffiths comes in, and she ignores him.
"Are you going to tell me, then?" |
“Are you going to tell me, then? Come on, Anita, you’ve been angry with me since last night.
"I can't apologise until I know what I've done wrong" |
“I can’t apologise until I know what I’ve done wrong.” She continues to drink her coffee, so he exclaims, “Anita!”
"When were you going to tell me?" |
“When were you going to tell me?” she demands, “That you’re helping the company that wants to buy Bethania – and that you’re going to make money from the sale?”
"Oh, that" |
Now he can understand her attitude;
"Yes, that, Ieuan!" |
she goes on, “Yes, that, Ieuan! Why didn’t you tell me?”
He replies that he knows how she feels about Bethania and agrees that he should have told her,
He blames Megan and Siôn |
but stresses that the offer was made a while ago; “Siôn and Megan kept it from you.”
Anita maintains that hiding the truth and lying are exactly the same;
"I don't want to live with someone who lies to me!" |
“I don’t want to live with someone who lies to me!”
"You want to finish with me?" |
He is very concerned that she wants to finish with him; however she says, as she puts strawberry jam on her toast, “No – but it is time you moved out of here –
"You're in everybody's way!" |
“you’re in everybody’s way, all the time.”
He was under the impression that she was happy to have him there, and she reminds him, “You have your own house, Ieuan!” He sadly announces that he will go and pack his things, so he can get out of her way.
Anita receives a text |
As he is leaving the room, Anita receives a text message;
"There's a vote today" |
“A message for Chapel members – there’s a vote today to decide whether we want to sell Bethania.” This surprises Griffiths, and she elaborates, “They want us to go to the vestry to vote. There will be a meeting in the Deri later for the result.”
He predicts that they might vote to keep it open, and then everything will be all right.
"I have faith in the membership" |
Anita declares, “It will be all right – I have faith in the membership! But that’s not what you want, is it?”
"The last thing I wanted to do was to hurt you" |
Griffiths says that he is sorry, and the last thing he wanted to do was to hurt Anita. He goes to pack.
Kath is feeling depressed |
Kath is looking very ‘down’ as Brynmor pours out a cup of tea; she asks him to get the marmalade,
"I can see you're tired" |
and he can see that she is tired. “Yes, I just couldn’t settle again last night,” she groans,
She has been reduced to watching 'Friends' |
“I came down in the middle of the night to watch ‘Friends’.”
He is concerned that she came downstairs, and points out that she could have fallen; he did not hear her, and she answers that he was snoring like a pig.
"No wonder you're like a dishcloth this morning" |
“No wonder you’re like a dishcloth this morning, then,” he rather unhelpfully comments, “Drink your coffee – you’ll feel better after that.”
She is quite sure that will not make any difference;
"It's driving me round the bend!" |
“I haven’t slept properly for ages – it’s driving me round the bend!” she moans, “I just can’t get comfortable, you know.”
"We'll sort it out, Kath" |
He promises that they will sort it out, but she cannot see any way of doing that, and the doctor said that it will take time.
"Have a bit of faith" |
Brynmor urges her to have a bit of faith that she will be fine; “It’s easy for you to say that,” she tells him.
Bad move – leaving Eifion in charge |
In the Deri, Cassie is preparing for some time off. She informs Eifion that the food order will arrive at 10:30; “Check it – we were short of a box of ready salted last time.
"Britt will be here at lunchtime" |
Britt will be here at lunchtime with the food for Jason’s birthday party – remember to check that.” He encourages her to go and enjoy her day off, but she stresses, “I’m serious, Eifion – it will be busy later with Bethania’s members coming here.”
That Hygiene Rating of 5 is in jeopardy |
“What do you think will happen there?” he wonders, and Cassie cannot see them voting to sell it. “I’m not so sure about that – not many go to chapel these days, and it costs a fortune to run.”
"I can't do the food for Jason's party!" |
Britt comes in, rather flustered, and announces that she cannot do the food for Jason; “It’s like a circus at Cae Glas!
Cassie is not happy about this |
“Phone Kelly and tell her – she’ll be fine – she only wanted some snacks,” Britt advises,
"Eileen's waiting for me!" |
“I have to go – Eileen’s waiting for me,” and she hurries out of the pub.
Eifion seems very keen to get rid of Cassie,
"Don't worry – I'll ring Kelly now" |
promising that he will ring Kelly, but as soon as she has gone,
He seems to have an alternative plan |
puts his phone away and appears to be planning something.
Anita is looking at her phone |
Anita is sitting at Bryntirion, looking at her phone when Griffiths comes back into the room, carrying his very small bag of belongings.
"Right, I think I've got everything" |
“Right, I think I’ve got everything,” he says. She comments that he can always come back if he has forgotten anything.
"I can tell them to find another company" |
“Look, I can always tell them to find another company,” he offers,
"But you should have told me, Ieuan" |
but she says there is no need, as he is a businessman, but she does add that he should have told her. “Yes, I understand that now – right, I’ll go to Mami’s house to sort everything out.
"Come over for dinner later?" |
“Come over for dinner later?” he pleads.
"It's not an easy job, is it?" |
Anita softens her stance and proposes that she will come with him to sort things out; “It’s not an easy job, is it?” This comes as a great relief to Griffiths, who says that he does not deserve Anita.
"Look, about Bethania . . ." |
“Look, about Bethania . . .” he adds, and she stops him there,
"We shall only start arguing" |
afraid that they will start arguing. She suggests that they should leave to do the sorting out, and he is very pleased to comply.
Brynmor is doing motorbike repairs |
Brynmor is sitting in the garage, tinkering with a motorcycle part, when Mark thanks him for the use of the toilet;
Mark has been experiencing bladder problems lately |
“I was bursting” he exclaims.
Brynmor says that it is a pity there are no public toilets in the village;
"No loos, the chapel could close . . ." |
“No loos, the chapel could close – we won’t have a village left.”
Mark is quite confident that they will not sell the chapel;
"We could be in an apocalypse . . ." |
“We could be in an apocalypse, and Megan would still open Bethania! I’d better go – I’ve got a lot of parcels.”
Gwyneth comes in . . . |
As he continues on his round, Gwyneth arrives, asking if she is still doing the Reiki session with Kath.
. . . and Brynmor pays her for the Reiki session |
Brynmor confirms it and pays her in cash; she hopes that Kath is feeling all right, and he points out that she is not at her best when she is tired.
"I'll make sure she gets a good night's sleep" |
Don’t worry – I’ll make sure she gets a good night’s sleep,” Gwyneth confidently predicts.
"So you're taking his side?" |
Anita and Ieuan are walking, arm in arm, along the street when they are spied by Megan; “Well, well, well – here they are! So you’re taking his side? The man who’s helping to sell off this village’s history. The chapel means nothing to you.”
"You know what Bethania means to me!" |
Anita angrily replies, “How can you say that? You know what Bethania means to me!”
"That's not what your actions are saying!" |
“That’s not what your actions are saying!” is Megan’s response, so Anita decides that she is not going to take anybody’s side, and wil’ take a step back from the committee. “Of course you are – but I thought you were more conscientious than this!” Megan growls.
"I don't care what you think!" |
Griffiths tries to interrupt here, but is told, “I don’t care what you think!”
"Perhaps you should not 'cast the first stone'" |
He remarks that, as a Christian, perhaps she should not ‘cast the first stone’.
"You kept the offer from the other members" |
“It wasn’t conscientious to keep the offer for Bethania from the other members,” he maintains, but Megan is confident that they would not want to sell. “Why didn’t you tell them, then?” he asks, “Unless you’re worried that they will accept the offer.” Anita thinks it is high time they continued on their way,
"At least we agree on something, Anita!" |
and Megan is in agreement with this.
"Can you go and get a bottle of wine?" |
Griffiths asks if Anita will buy a bottle of wine for them later; he has a phone call to make, and as she goes into the shop,
"I want you to do something, Rhys" |
he contacts Rhys. “I want you to do something.”
Jason has smartened himself up |
In the afternoon, Kelly and Jason (who actually looks reasonably smart) are in the Deri for his birthday party and are looking at the card from Tyler, who will buy him a couple of pints, as he has the afternoon off.
Eifion's version of 'snacks and finger food' |
Eifion comes in with the food, announcing, “Snacks and finger food.”
"I was expecting sandwiches and cakes" |
“Whoa!” says Kelly, “I was expecting sandwiches and cakes!” Tyler picks up one of the items and looks puzzled by it;
"Mini fish finger with a twist" |
Eifion explains that it is a ‘mini fish finger with a twist’. Kelly is seriously unhappy; “What the hell?” she squeals.
"It tastes like spicy socks!" |
Tyler brands it ‘disgusting’, demanding what Eifion has put in it; “It tastes like spicy socks!” Eifion comes to the conclusion that their palates are not sophisticated enough, explaining that there is wasabi in it.
'Sausage rolls, cheese and pineapple" |
“Oh, for God’s sake, I wanted snacks!” rages Kelly, “Sausage rolls, cheese and pineapple sticks, crisps, Bara Brith – all that!” Eifion points out that he has made a selection, and that perhaps she will like the ‘marshmallow twists’.
"Happy birthday, Jase!" |
Nevertheless, Kelly wishes Jason a happy birthday.
Gwyneth is not welcomed at Maes-y-Deri |
Kath is making her slow way around Maes-y-Deri when a visitor arrives in the form of Gwyneth. “What right do you have to march into my house like that?” Kath snarls.
"Brynmor organised a Reiki session for you" |
Gwyneth explains that Brynmor asked her to come, and has organised a Reiki session for her.
"Reiki?" |
Kath is far from happy about this.
"It's very sad, Mrs Morris . . ." |
In the shop flat, Rhys is carrying out instructions and has phoned Mrs Morris; “It’s very sad,” he agrees, “Thinking about how lively the chapel used to be –
". . . but we need to be realistic" |
“but, as we discussed, we need to be realistic. Offers like this don’t come around very often – and with water and electricity costs going up and up . . . yes, exactly – thanks for the chat.”
Another name ticked off his list |
He looks very pleased with himself as he ticks her name off the list.
"I wouldn't serve this to a dog!" |
In the Deri, Kelly decides that she is going to get a sandwich from the shop; “I’m starving!” and Tyler reckons that he would not serve this food to a dog.
"Well, you've eaten most of it!" |
Eifion tells him to stop moaning, as he has eaten almost all of it. Kelly judges, “This food is rank, and you can’t pretend otherwise. If you think I’m paying for this rubbish, you’ve got another think coming! I didn’t order this!”
Cae Glas' mixer has packed up |
Britt comes in, but only because Cae Glas’ mixer has packed up, and she has to borrow one from the pub.
"It looks like it came out of a garbage bin!" |
Kelly raises her complaint; “I ordered snacks for Jason’s birthday – and what is this? It looks like it came out of a garbage bin!”
"You've made this look horrible!" |
Britt looks angrily at Eifion; “You cooked these? You’ve made this look horrible – chicken and marshmallow?” As Jason tries to stifle his laughter, Eifion describes it as his marshmallow surprise, and Kelly once again is adamant she will not pay a penny;
"Jase, stop sniggering!" |
she also reprimands Jason for his amusement.
"From now on I'll do the cooking" |
Britt insists that she does not expect Kelly to pay; “I’m so sorry – from now on I’ll do the cooking!” she decides.
"Reiki – good grief!" |
As Gwyneth assembles her materials, Kath exclaims, “Reiki! Good grief!” Gwyneth points out that she does not have to believe in it for it to work;
"At least give it a chance" |
she should at least give it a chance. “Chakras and hocus-pocus? I don’t think so!” growls Kath,
"How's the surprise going?" |
as Brynmor comes in through the front door, and asks how the surprise is going.
“Well, it was a surprise, all right, Brynmor!” and Gwyneth complains that she does not believe in Reiki.
"She's the last person I'd let touch me!" |
“Even if I did believe in that nonsense, she’d be the last person I’d let touch me!” Kath vows.
"There's no need for that, Kath" |
Brynmor protests there is no need for that, but Kath insists that there is, “After what she did to Ricky!
"He'd taken her drugs when he fell off the roof!" |
“He’d taken her drugs when he fell off the roof!”
"I didn't sell him the drugs" |
Gwyneth makes it clear that she did not sell him the drugs; “Perhaps not – but you were a part of the whole thing!” As Gwyneth tries to apologise,
"Get out of my house!" |
Kath shouts at her, “Get out of my house! I don’t want you here!”
Gwyneth beats a hasty retreat |
Gwyneth wisely picks up her equipment and leaves.
"Don't you think it's rather insensitive?" |
In the Deri, Jason considers Rhys’ presence to be rather insensitive; “Have to see the result, do you? Can’t help yourself?”
"I'm an estate agent, Jason" |
Rhys answers that he is a estate agent who works for buyers and sellers.
"They're more stupid than I thought" |
“If he and Griffiths think the members of Bethania are in their pockets, they’re more stupid than I thought!” says Megan,
"Perhaps you don't know the members as well as you think" |
and Rhys suggests that perhaps she does not know the members as well as she thinks.
"Right, I'm going" |
Tyler is leaving, as he is not a member,
"Even Siôn can't be here" |
and Megan remarks that she has had a lot of apologies this evening; “Even Siôn can’t be here,”
"No-one will want to get rid of the chapel" |
and Kelly maintains that no-one will want to get rid of the chapel; Megan hopes that she is right.
Eunice Griffiths' photo . . . |
At the Griffiths house, where Mami’s photo is prominently displayed, Anita has enjoyed her meal.
. . . in the palatial Griffiths residence |
“We deserved that – this clearing is hard work,” Ieuan comments, “You did a good job with those books,”
"I put a few Welsh books to one side" |
and she says that she put a few Welsh books to one side, thinking that she could perhaps take them to Y Winllan, to see if Siôn would want them.
"To Mami, Happy Christmas" |
She also found a book token for Y Winllan, and reads the card; “To Mami, Happy Christmas, lots of love, Ieuan. It’s a few days past the date, but I don’t think that matters.”
"I'm not going to use it" |
He tells her to take it, because he is not going to use it, and thanks her for helping him.
"One of the rooms upstairs is locked" |
Then she points out that one of the rooms upstairs is still locked, and if he knows where the key is, she can start sorting that out.
What secrets lurk behind that locked door? |
He gives the excuse that he does not know where the key is, but is sure that it will turn up – and emphasises they have already done a lot of work.
"What will you do with the rest of the stuff?" |
“Have you thought what you will do with the rest of the stuff?” she asks, and he thinks that it can stay where it is for now.
"It still feels like Mami's house" |
He says that it still feels like his mother’s house.
"I'm wondering what the result of the vote is" |
Anita asks what time it is, as the meeting in the Deri is about to start; “I’m just wondering what the result of the vote is.”
At that moment, Megan rises to her feet, and Jason comments that there are not many there.
"It doesn't help that Auntie Neet has jumped ship" |
“It doesn’t help that Auntie Neet has jumped ship, either,” says Kelly.
Jason asks Rhys what he thinks the result will be, and meets with the enigmatic reply, “Honestly, it could go either way.”
"Thank you all for staying . . ." |
“I don’t think many more will turn up,” Megan begins, “But thank you all for staying.
". . . I have the result here" |
“I have the result here,” and she pulls a sheet of paper from the envelope.
Anita pours another glass |
At Griffiths’ house, Anita pours Ieuan another glass of wine as a message alert sounds on his phone; “This will be Rhys,” he says,
"Oh – I wasn't expecting that" |
“Oh – I wasn’t expecting that,”
"What doe it say?" |
and Anita is very anxious to know what it says.
The result is evident from Megan's expression |
The scene shifts back to the Deri, where Megan folds the sheet of paper with a despondent look on her face.
"It's business, that's all, Megan" |
“It’s business, Megan, that’s all,” Rhys tells her, “I’m just trying to make a living.”
But to Megan, it is the end of an era |
She is devastated.
