A packet of biscuits escapes from the shop

A packet of biscuits comes rolling out of the door of the shop and Tegwen, who happens to be passing, retrieves it, handing it to Eileen.   “

"I love them"

I love them,” says Tegwen, and is told that they are a treat for Huwi-John.

“That’s the problem with the children as they get older – they expect you to bring something back for them,” and Tegwen says that Ken is the same, 

Howard comes into sight

then becomes aware of Howard, emerging from the alley.   

"What are you doing here?"

They look awkwardly at each other with Tegwen demanding, “What are you doing here?” 

"I have nowhere to go"

and he says that he has nowhere to go.   Tegwen explains to Eileen that he is her half-brother, and turns to him, growling, “Whatever you have to say, I don’t want to hear it!”

"He assaulted Eifion and killed Fflam"

Eileen fills her in on the details;  “He assaulted Eifion and killed Fflam – 

"He's got a cheek, coming to the village"

“he’s got a cheek, coming to the village at all,” and she goes back into the shop.

"Is that true?"

Tegwen demands if that is true, 

Howard remains silent

but Howard does not reply, so she walks away.

"How's Dylan the detective this morning?"

Megan is just opening her shop when Gwyneth comes across, asking how Dylan the detective is this morning;  “He said he’s helping you find Gareth.”   Megan does not know where he has gone today, as he left very early in the morning.   

"Isn't the man of mystery?"

“Isn’t he the man of mystery?” Gwyneth remarks, but as far as Megan is concerned, 

"I don't care, if he finds Gareth Wyn"

if he can find Gareth Wyn, she does not care how mysterious he is.

Then Gwyneth notices Dani coming out of the Deri and informs her, “I want to take Gwern to the cinema tonight, and perhaps a pizza afterwards.”   

"No, he has football practice to"night

Dani replies that he has football practice tonight, and there is a game this weekend;  she suggests they can do it another time, 

Gwyneth is not pleased

which does not go down well with Gwyneth.

The Newcastle cityscape

We see the view from a flat in Newcastle, 

Dylan drums his fingers on the table

where Dylan is drumming his fingers, irritatingly, on the table.   

"Nice flat – renting?"

Garry brings over two mugs of tea, and Dylan comments, “Nice flat – renting?” which Garry confirms is the case.

"You didn't come all this way to ask about rent"

“You didn’t come all the way to Newcastle to ask how much rent I pay,” he continues, and is told that Dylan needs his help.   “And why would I want to do that?” Garry wonders.

"Jaclyn deserves justice"

“Jaclyn deserves justice,” is the reply, “I loved her,” 

A photo of them together

and he takes out a rather dogeared photo of the two of them together.   “And I know that you did once,” Dylan goes on, “We can’t let Gwyneth get away with this.”

"Why would Gwyneth want to kill Jaclyn?"

Garry demands why Gwyneth would want to kill Jaclyn;  

"To get at me!"

“To get to me,” is Dylan’s answer, “She blames me for the time she spent in prison.”   It is pointed out to him that all he has is this theory.

The Post-it note makes another appearance

Then Dylan produces the Post-it note which he found stuck on Jaclyn’s forehead, and about which he did not tell the police;  he alleges that it is Gwyneth’s handwriting.   

"You know she also killed your brother"

“You know she also killed your brother.”

"And what do you want me to do?"

“And what do you want me to do?” asks Garry;  he is told that Dylan wants to get rid of her once and for all, whereupon Garry simply looks at him.

Tegwen is having a quiet cup of tea

In the Deri, Tegwen is drinking a cup of tea when Howard comes in, carrying his belongings;  “What do you want, Howard?” she demands, and he asks her to just listen.

"I know I've made mistakes . . ."

“I know I’ve made mistakes . . .” 

"You can say that again!"

and she sneers that he can say that again.   “Just listen, will you – I’m skint, Tegs.”   She concludes that he wants to borrow money again, which she will not agree to.   “No – I want a job,” he says.

"What do you think I am – a job centre?"

“What do you think I am – a job centre?” she asks, 

"I did some work at Penrhewl"

and he explains that he did some work in Penrhewl, cash in hand – until Eileen found out.   He knows that they have not found a replacement and that they are desperate.   

"I just want you to speak to Eileen"

He wants Tegwen to speak to Eileen and ask her to give him a chance – he maintains that he just wants an honest job.

He imagines that he will be staying at a hostel tonight and, after some thought, she agrees that she will speak to Eileen;  

"I won't lie to her"

“But I won’t lie to her – and I can’t promise she’ll forgive you either – 

"I wouldn't forgive you!"

“because I wouldn’t!”   She gets up and leaves the Deri.

"I didn't know you did house calls"

There is a knock at the door of Bryntirion, and Anita did not realise that Rhys did house calls;  “Only for my favourite clients,” he laughs, and she offers him a cup of tea, 

"Any news about number 10?"

wondering if he has any news about number 10.

"I've found a cash buyer"

“Yes, I’ve found a buyer – cash buyer, no chain, who’s eager to move quickly,” Rhys begins;  

"I hope it's someone local"

she hopes that it is no-one from away, as he knows how she feels about that.   “No, it’s a local man, a Welsh speaker who wants a foot on the ladder – 

"But the way wages are round here . . ."

“but with the the wages the way they are around here, he can’t afford the asking price.”

Anita had assumed that would be the case and confirms that she is still interested, 

"Who is it, then?"

but wants to know who it is.   

"Me!"

“Me!” he announces, and she is momentarily speechless.

Kath can see some financial advantages here

Gwyneth and Kath are painting one of the chapel pews, as Kath remarks, “There’s some good money to be made out of this – while idiots like Sioned are willing to pay a fortune for some painted wood!”   

Gwyneth has other things on her mind

Gwyneth seems to have other things on her mind at the moment and tells Kath that she is not in the mood.

"Come on – it's not the Mona Lisa!"

“Come on – you’re painting a bench, not the Mona Lisa,” says Kath.   

"Did you used to paint with Mark and Stacey?"

Gwyneth asks if she used to paint with Mark and Stacey when they were little;  

"No, I stuck them in front of the telly"

“No, I didn’t have time – I stuck them in front of the telly and hoped for the best,” Kath answers.

"I used to paint with Gwern when he was little"

Gwyneth recalls that she used to paint with Gwern when he was little, but does not think that he does it these days.   

"Children lose interest"

“That’s what children are like – they lose interest,” says Kath, but is told that he had real talent, and Gwyneth hates thinking that he does not do it any more.   Now he is into computer games and football.

"I uses to carve into the chapel's furniture"

Kath remembers that she used to carve into the chapel’s furniture at that age;  “And bad things as well!   Until I got caught – I got thrown out of Sunday school – and I got a clip from my Gran.”

"And now you've got one of the benches in your house"

“Look at you now – you’ve got one of Bethania’s benches in your house,” says Gwyneth, but Kath insists that she is still the same, 

"What have you done, Kath?"

so Gwyneth goes to have a look at what she has done.   

"I haven't finished yet!"

She insists that that she has not finished yet, and knows what Gwyneth is thinking, which is described as disgusting.

Up in Newcastle, Garry remarks, “You keep calling her a murderer – what exactly are you, then?”   

"I haven't killed anyone"

Dylan maintains that he has not killed anyone, 

"No – you just shot me and dumped me in a river!"

and Garry continues, “Oh, no – you just shot me, wrapped me in a bag and threw me in a river – but, no, you’re not a murderer.”

"I was under a lot of strain"

Dylan gives the excuse that he had a good reason for doing it at the time, arguing that he was under a lot of strain.   He points out that Garry is still there;  

"No thanks to you!"

“No thanks to you!” Garry snarls.

"She didn't deserve to be killed!"

“You know that Jaclyn wouldn’t hurt anyone – she didn’t deserve to be killed!” insists Dylan, 

"No, she didn't"

and Garry does agree with him there.   

"If someone killed Britt, you'd want revenge"

“If somebody killed Britt, you’d want revenge.”

"But I'd take revenge myself!"

It is emphasised that, “The difference is, if anyone killed Britt, I’d take revenge myself!”   Dylan informs Garry that he is selling Tapas, and all the money will go to Garry.

“I don’t need the money!” Garry growls, and it is assumed that he is happy to continue being a tenant.   

"You want me to kill the other of my child?"

“Let me get this straight, so we understand each other.   You want me to kill Gwyneth – the mother of my child?”   

"Yes!"

Dylan makes it crystal clear that is precisely what he wants.

"Should I watch Gwern at football training?"

Gwyneth asks Kath, “Do you think I should go and watch Gwern at football training tonight?”   Kath wonders if he would want her there, and she glumly replies, “More than likely not – I just want us to have a close relationship again.”

"You can't change children"

Kath advises, “Children turn out like children turn out – you can’t change them.”   Gwyneth asks which child-raising manual contained that advice;  

"The school of life"

“The school of life,” is the reply, “Look at our Stacey and Mark – exactly the same Ready Brek for breakfast, and both turned out completely differently.   Nothing to do with Dyff and me – that’s how they are.”   

Brynmor is back . . .

Brynmor comes in and is warned that the paint on the pew is still wet;  

. . . and takes an interest in the design

he admires Kath’s artwork,

"I haven't finished the rest yet"

but she protests that it is a pair of eyes and she has not finished the rest of the face yet.   

"Sioned will pay a fortune for that"

“What’s wrong with you two?   Sioned will pay a fortune for that.”

He realises that she has not heard the news;  

"Jinx wants all the furniture back"

“The chapel is not closing now and Jinx wants all the furniture back – I told him that we had this.”   Kath is not at all happy to hear this.

"I've been looking for a place for some time"

At Bryntirion, Anita says that it is an unexpected offer, and is told by Rhys, “I’ve been looking for a place for some time.”   

"But it's unfair, isn't it?"

She regards it as unfair, because he knew that she was willing to accept £20,000 less from a local person.   He goes on, “There’s usually more local competition for a house like this – 

"Because of . . . why happened"

“but the truth is, there hasn’t been any local interest because of . . . what happened.”

"I just want a home to live in"

“Now that doesn’t bother me at all – a house is a house and I just want a home to live in.”   

"I think I'll wait  few months"

Anita thinks that she will wait for a few months so that the memory of what happened to Jaclyn has faded a bit, and he says that is completely fair.

"A local person might buy it – or perhaps not . . ."

“Perhaps a local person may want to buy it in a month or two – but perhaps not.   In the meantime the house is empty 

". . . and I will have found somewhere else"

“and I will have found somewhere else.   

All this mock sincerity

“Hand on heart, Anita, I don’t think you’ll get a better offer, especially without a chain.   

"You won't have to pay commission"

“We could have a private sale, so you won’t have to pay commission.”

"Oh, all right, then . . ."

She finally agrees to this, but does not want it dragging on;  

". . . but I want things to move quickly!"

“I want things to move quickly, seeing that I’m doing you a big favour.”   He assures her that within a few weeks everything will have gone through and she can sleep easily, 

"You've made a local man very happy"

knowing that she has made a local man very happy.   She looks rather sceptically at him.

Eileen is hard at work

Eileen appears very flustered as she stirs some concoction on the stove;  

"We can't carry on like this!"

Britt comes in, declaring, “We can’t carry on like this!”   Eileen predicts that things will get better from next week.   “That’s what people always say, and it never happens,” Britt continues, “You need to employ a farmhand!”

"Howard was all right"

Eileen points out that good ones do not grow on trees, but Britt insists that Howard was all right.   

"We can't have someone like that on the farm"

“We can’t have someone like that on the farm – we shall cope,” Eileen insists.

Then Tegwen comes in, explaining that the door was open;  Eileen informs her that DJ and Sioned no longer live there.  

"It was you I wanted to see"

“No, it was you I wanted to see,” says Tegwen, “This is about my half-brother – I’m not here to defend him, but you have the right to hear the facts.   He’s my half-brother – we’ve never been close.   

"He was always following the wrong crowd"

“He had a hard time growing up, always following the wrong crowd.”

“Like the dog-stealing crowd?” Eileen enquires, and Tegwen confirms that he has done a lot of the dirty work for other people and been threatened into doing things he should not have.   She is not there to defend him, but it is not all black and white.

"And you want me to give him a job?"

“And you want me to give him a job?” realises Eileen.   

"No, to be honest, I don't"

Tegwen says that, to be honest, she does not, and it would make her life a lot easier if he left the place – but he is still her brother.

“He asked me to have a word on his behalf, so here I am – I’ve tried – this is his number,” she continues, 

"This is his number"

 she puts down a piece of paper on the table 

She leaves Penrhewl 

and then walks out of the farmhouse.   Britt remarks that everyone deserves a second chance.

Rhys looks at his new purchase

Rhys and his father survey number 10 from across the road;  “Congratulations,” says Hywel, “I don’t know why Anita gave you a discount – 

"It was cheap enough already"

“it was cheap enough already.”   Rhys maintains that he has a talent for these things;  

"And a father who'll lend you the money!"

“Yes, talent – and a father who’ll lend you the money!” 

"You'll get it back quickly enough"

 Rhys is certain that he will get it back quickly enough.   They will go to the Deri for a pint to celebrate.

“I’ll be there in a minute,” Rhys says, 

"I've got a very nice property for you . . ."

and immediately gets out his phone;  he speaks in English, “Hi there, I’ve got a very nice property coming up in Cwmderi that would suit you –

". . . holiday home or AirBnB"

“either as a holiday home or AirBnB.”

Howard is at Penrhewl 

Now Howard is at Penrhewl;  “Tegwen asked me to give you a chance to explain,” Eileen tells him, 

"I don't think I'll ever get over it!"

“So come on, explain yourself.   Stealing dogs for fighting – how could you do such thing?   I don’t think I’ll ever get over what you did to Fflam.”   

"I don't think I will, either"

Howard replies, “I don’t think I will either – you’re not going to offer me a job, are you?”

"Would you, if you were in my position?"

“Would you, if you were in my position?” snarls Eileen, 

He shakes his head

and he sadly shakes his head, but as he is on his way out of the door, he adds, not that he expects it to make any difference, that he did enjoy working there.

"Out in the fresh air with the animals"

“Out in the fresh air with the animals,” 

"It's a privilege to live here"

and Eileen agrees that it is a privilege to live there.  “I hope your son will get to enjoy it – it’s a shame he isn’t old enough to help out now.”

"I had another son once – John"

“I had another son once – John,” she informs him, “He would be about the same age as you now.   I often think how things would be if he were here to run the farm.”   

Eileen becomes emotional

She dissolves into tears, 

"I'm sorry – for everything"

and Howard is very sorry for everything.   

She breaks down in tears

As he leaves the farm, Eileen is weeping bitterly.

Megan has dozed off . . .

Megan is dozing in her armchair 

. . . when Dylan returns

when Dylan returns from his journey and raps on the door to waken her;  she asks where he has been and he says that he had a long journey to make.   

"Any luck?"

“Any luck?” she asks, and he nods his head.

"I've found someone who's willing to help us"

“I’ve found someone who’s willing to help us.”   

Garry is looking at the photo . . .

Meanwhile back in Newcastle, Garry is looking at the photo and the Post-it note;  

. . . and planning what he will do next

he appears to be planning his next move.
