No-one wants to get involved with Dylan

Dylan is on the phone to someone, needing a favour, but the anonymous response is, “I’ve told you not to ring this number – you’ve run out of favours.”

"I want you to sort it out"

Dylan goes on, “I know who killed Jaclyn – I want you to sort it out – this is the last time I’ll contact you, I promise.   What are you going to do?”

Then the phone goes dead

The phone line goes dead and Dylan looks very worried about what he is going to do next.

Iolo is doing some paperwork

Iolo is catching up with some of his plumbing paperwork at his father’s house when Eifion comes in and informs him, “I’m telling you, I’m a genius!”   Iolo cannot understand how buying number 10 makes him a genius.

Eifion explains his reasoning

As he brandishes his slice of toast, Eifion explains, “No local will buy it because of what happened to Jaclyn.   Anita won’t sell it to anyone from away, because of the community and principles – and all that nonsense.

"Then Eifion Rowlands, salt of the earth, walks in"

“Then I walk in, Eifion Rowlands, local lad, salt of the earth for rescuing Britt from the fire.”

"About time you stopped milking that cow"

Iolo advises him to stop milking that cow, and is told, “Don’t call Britt a cow!” then continues with his plan,

"Of course I'll sell the house to you cheaply"

“Anita will say, ‘Of course I’ll sell the house to you cheaply, Eifion, love.”

"I sell it to 'English McEnglish-face'!"

“Then, a few months after moving in, I pretend I can’t stop thinking about poor Jaclyn, so I put the house back on the market and sell it for a profit to “English McEnglish-face’!   Or is that too racist?”

"And how will Anita feel?"

Iolo describes it as unprincipled, demanding how Anita will feel;

"All she wants is a clear conscience"

“All Anita wants is a clear conscience, and she’ll get that by selling to a local.   She’s happy, I’m happy – what’s the problem?”

"In any case, you can't afford it"

Iolo stresses that a local person will not be living there, and in any case he cannot afford it.

"But if you lent me the money . . ."

Eifion has an answer to that problem as well;  “But if you lent me the money, we could share the profit – fancy a couple of months in Australia?”

"Dad would never speak to me again"

Iolo is quite sure that his father would never speak to him again.

“Of course he would – you know what you two are like – a couple of weeks of blanking each other in the Deri,

"You'd soon be friends again"

there will be a crisis, crying, hugs, friends again.”   Iolo makes it clear that he does not want anything to do with the idea.

A meeting has been called

Some posters are being fixed by Tyler to the door of Bethania, reading, ‘Meeting to oppose the sale of the chapel, tonight the Deri 18:30.’

"The members have agreed to sell"

Rhys points out to him that the members have agreed to sell, but Tyler replies, “Jinx wants to change people’s minds.”

“Why are you doing his dirty work?   You’re not a member,” Rhys sneers,

"I became a member last week"

and is told that Tyler became a member last week.   He insists that a lot of people are worried about the building,

"But you're . . ."

and Rhys begins, “But you’re . . .”

"Gay people can't attend chapel?"

“What – gay?” Tyler demands, “Gay people can’t attend chapel?”   Rhys maintains that they have not been the most liberal of places,

"Jesus was a single man in his 30s"

but is informed, “Jesus was a single man in his 30s, who enjoyed hanging out with his twelve friends –

"Telling people to love each other"

“he went around the place, telling people to love each other, so . . .”

"Ieuan, perhaps there's a problem"

Rhys gets out his phone and contacts Griffiths;  “Ieuan – about the Bethania sale – perhaps there’s a problem.”

Dylan is deep in thought

Dylan is sitting in the Deri, looking very pensive, when Megan comes in,

"That's what I used to to with Rhian and Gareth"

assuming that he is there to see Gabriel, but is told that Dani has taken him to feed the ducks.   “That’s what I used to do with Rhian and Gareth a long time ago,” she recalls.

He seems mesmerised by his phone

Although it is obvious that he is staring at his phone,

"I had something to sort out, Megan"

Megan goes on, “Talking of Gareth, I had intended to ask you, but you went out very early.”   He replies that he had something important to sort out,

"Have you managed to get in touch with Gareth Wyn?"

but she is very eager to find out if he has managed to get in touch with Gareth Wyn.

"My contact is bound to be able to help"

Dylan alleges that he has a good contact who is bound to be able to help;  he is confident of getting an address for her son, and will e-mail his contact.

"I'm grateful for your detective work"

Megan is very grateful for his detective work, and at that moment Gwyneth comes in;

"What have you found out, Dylan?"

“Detective, is it?” she enquires, “What have you found out, Dylan?   Atlantis – or who killed JFK?”

He stares intently at her

Dylan is staring fixedly at her as Megan explains that Dylan hopes to find Gareth Wyn for her – they have not been in touch for years.

"I just want to know he's safe"

She just wants to know that he is safe.

"All parents want to know their children are safe . . ."

“All parents want to know that their children are safe,” says Gwyneth, “There’s nothing worse than worrying that something’s happened to Gwern,” then she turns to Dylan,

". . . isn't that right, Dylan?"

“And I’m sure you feel the same way about Gabriel.”   He agrees that he does,

He is still staring at her

and he watches her she walks away, then returns to his phone.

"Have you changed your mind?"

When Rhys comes into the Deri, Iolo asks, “Have you found a buyer for number 10?” and Rhys suspects that he may have changed his mind.

"He's going to take advantage of Anita"

“No, but I think Eifion will put in an offer,” Iolo continues, “Look, between you and me, I think that he is going to take advantage of Anita.   She’s willing to sell to someone local at a discount, and then he’ll sell it on for profit a few months later.

"It would cause a lot of bad blood"

“It would cause a lot of bad blood.”

"I've heard there is another local offer"

Rhys tells him not to worry, as he has heard that another local person is going to put in an offer, but cannot of course reveal their identity.

"I have to try and persuade them not to change their minds"

He is staying for the meeting, as Griffiths cannot get back until later, to persuade them not to change their minds.   He is warned that a lot of people have strong feelings about Bethania being turned into flats.

"It would mean a lot of work for you"

Rhys reminds Iolo that it would mean a lot of work for him, but he will not be at the meeting.   “These people don’t use the place – but they don’t want anyone else to use it either!” Rhys rages.

Iolo has heard more than enough

Iolo has not finished his pint, but does not want to hear any more, so immediately hurries out.

"Tea will be in five minutes, girls . . ."

Esther and Seren are working on their family trees in the Deri flat and are told by Dani that tea will be in five minutes;

". . . so go and wash your hands"

she takes an interest in what they are doing and tells them to go and wash their hands.

Dani is concerned about Esther's family tree

Then she looks at Esther’s family tree and does not appear particularly happy.

"I hoped more people would turn up"

In the Deri as they prepare for the meeting, Jinx tells Siôn that he had hoped for more people to turn up, but is told that they have more than a quorum and might as well start.

"Thanks for attending this meeting"

“Thank you all for attending this meeting, members of Bethania chapel,” says Jinx,

"First item on the agenda . . ."

“First item on the agenda, that we members should overturn the decision to sell the chapel to the developer.”

"Can I say a word?"

Rhys asks if he can say a word as Ieuan Griffiths is not yet there,

"This meeting is for members only!"

and Megan points out that the meeting is for members only, but he is undeterred;  “I thought you wanted to save the chapel for the community – well, I belong to the community.”

"Should Rhys be allowed to speak?"

They take a vote on whether Rhys should speak, and decide they should listen to him.

"The decision has already been made"

“First, I’m surprised that this meeting has been called, as the decision has already been made,” says Rhys, but Siôn insists that the members have the right to have another vote.

"Will you hold another vote until you get the answer you want?"

“What if you lose that vote?   Will you hold another and another until you get the answer you want?” snarls Rhys, “This village needs more affordable homes than an empty chapel –

"Stick to your original decision"

“if you’re worried about the village, stick to your original decision.”

Gaynor has come to collect Esther

Gaynor has come to the Deri flat to collect Esther;  Dani says that she has been entertaining Seren.   When Gaynor offers to have Seren next time,

"If you don't have any 'visitors'!"

she is told, “If there aren’t any ‘visitors’,”

"It won't happen again, Dani"

and apologises about that, also assures Dani that it will not happen again.

"Sheryl isn't on her family tree!"

“I see Esther’s been doing her family tree – Sheryl isn’t on it!” Dani rather pointedly comments,

"Yes, we shall have to add her on"

and is told that she will have to be added.

"And no mention of her biological family"

“And no mention of her biological family.”

"We're trying not to confuse her"

Gaynor maintains that she does not know them and that they are trying not to confuse her.   “I think Sheryl would like her to know where she came from and why,” Dani suggests, upon which Gaynor says that it is up to her and Hywel to decide when to do that, as she leaves the flat with Esther.

"Do it for the community!"

Rhys continues his speech, “More houses and more people will make the village a more prosperous place to live – do it for the community!”

Siôn is not in agreement

which brings disapproval from Siôn.

Then Jinx asks Siôn if he will take the chair for a minute, so he can address the meeting.

"Thanks for the passionate speech . . ."

“Thanks for the passionate speech in favour of selling the chapel – I see now how you’re so good at your job –

". . . people with more money than sense!"

“selling houses to people who have more money than sense!   The image you created about the future of the area without the chapel is appealing –

"Like your spiel, it's just an illusion"

“but like your spiel, it’s just an illusion.”

Megan definitely agrees with that

This meets with Megan’s wholehearted approval.

"Another nail in the valley's coffin"

“If we sell Bethania, it will be another nail in the valley’s coffin.   Do we want to get rid of a place where people can spend time without having to pay for the privilege?

"We are all connected to the place"

“We are all connected to the place, and not just members – everyone’s been to a wedding, a christening, a funeral there.   In a world where people feel more isolated, having somewhere where people can come together to look after each other is more important than ever.

Rhys realises that he has lost the argument

“If we sell the chapel, that opportunity’s gone for ever.”

"Right, shall we have a vote?"

Siôn asks if they can have a vote,

"What's this nonsense all about?"

and at that moment Griffiths bursts into the pub, demanding what this nonsense is all about.   “A meeting of the members of Bethania,” he is advised,

"There is no Bethania – you've sold it!"

but maintains that there is no Bethania, as they have sold it.

Jinx insists that they can change their minds, and Siôn requests everyone in favour of overturning the original decision to raise their hands.

"You'll be liable for breach of contract!"

Griffiths objects, reminding them, “If you change your minds you’ll be liable for breach of contract – and could all be sued!”

"No contract has been signed"

Jinx informs him that no contract has been signed;  “That’s just a matter of time,” blusters Griffiths.

"Bullying and threatening to get his own way!"

“We don’t appreciate a county councillor bullying and threatening to get his own way!” emphasises Jinx,

"Lets have a vote"

and Siôn for the third time calls for the vote.

All hands are raised

All hands are raised,

Griffiths votes against

and the only ones against are Griffiths and Rhys,

"You're not members!"

neither of whom, Megan is quick to point out, are actually members.

They are happy with their decision . . .

It is declared that there has been a unanimous decision to reconsider and to save the chapel,

. . . and there is a round of applause

which is greeted by applause from the members, while Griffiths and Rhys creep away.

Dylan creeps in again . . .

Dani is tidying up in the flat when Dylan again appears in the doorway;

. . . much to Dani's annoyance

“We can’t carry on like this – you sneaking in – it isn’t right!” she exclaims.   He replies that he is not sneaking,

"I've come to say good night to Gabriel"

but has simply come to say good night to Gabriel, because he is his father.   “Act like that, then – and not like a stalker!” she tells him, “Look, Dylan, I know you want to be part of his life, but I need privacy too.”

"It's not important"

His phone sounds, but after looking at the screen, he rejects the call, maintaining that it is not important.

"Sort yourself out, Dylan!"

She continues to instruct him to sort himself out;  she does not want another man who will not give her any space.

As soon as she leaves the room, he takes out his phone and calls back;

"I need some help"

he is told, “A busy man who can’t answer his phone.”   Dylan says that he needs some help, but is informed, “No, we can’t help you.”

“They killed my sister – what if they want to do something to my son?” he demands,

"We both know who you have to phone"

and the voice on the phone tells him that they both know who he has to phone.

The line goes dead again

Despite Dylan’s entreaties, the phone once more goes dead.   He appears to be running out of options.

"Ah, Griffiths – unlucky"

Siôn says, “Ah, Griffiths – unlucky – you’ll have to tell your clients that Bethania is not for sale.”   Griffiths replies that it is not as if empty chapels are rare in the area, and Jinx calls him an idiot.

"Who do you think we can reopen Bethania?"

“When do you think we can reopen Bethania,” Siôn asks, and Jinx predicts that it will be difficult, as they will have to get back all the furniture.

Megan is feeling celebratory

Megan comes over in a very positive mood, bringing Jinx a drink to show her gratitude, but he says that he is all right with his pint, so she drinks it instead, saying that it is a pity to waste it.

"Take it easy, Megan"

Siôn warns her to take it easy, but she insists that they have to celebrate

"That swine Griffiths and his lapdog!"

after they beat, “That swine Griffiths and his lapdog, Rhys Llywelyn!”

They decline to make any comment

They are sitting at the other end of the bar, as Megan goes on that she was convinced they would win in the end.   Jinx will escort her home,

"Those traitors!"

and she agrees, “I don’t want to spend a second longer with those traitors!”

Griffiths appears to be making a phone call, Hywel comes in and wonders what is the matter with Megan.

"The members changed their minds"

Rhys gives him the news that the members changed their minds about selling Bethania, and Hywel tells him, “You’ll have to take your selling skills somewhere else.”

Now Hywel is 'being tapped' for some money

Rhys says that he has already found one, a very good investment;  “Would you lend me some money to buy number 10 from Anita?   It’s too good an opportunity to pass up.”

"The members have come to their senses"

Back home, Megan informs Dylan of the good news about Bethania;  “The members have come to their senses and decided not to sell the chapel.”

"Oh great"

He does not sound interested as she describes the evening’s events.

"Have you heard from your contact?"

Then she wonders if he has heard anything from his contact, and is told that he has not;

"He doesn't want to get involved"

that contact cannot help them, and does not want to be dragged into other people’s problems.

"But I have to know"

Megan is very insistent that she has to know, and he confesses, “There is one other person, but I didn’t want to ask him.”   Megan pleads with him to try and he says that he will.

"Let me finish what I have to say"

As soon as she is out of the room, he makes another call – his last hope.   With the clock is ticking ominously in the background, he says, “It’s Dylan . . . just let me finish what I have to say, please.

"Gwyneth killed Jaclyn"

“I know who killed Jaclyn – Gwyneth – I have evidence.   Are you still there?”

At the other end of the phone, as the clock strikes the hour,

"Yes, I'm here"

Garry Monk answers, “Yes, I’m here.”
