Work starts on the big contract

The team from APD are starting work at the care homes, and Mathew is on the phone to Jason, back at the shop.   “We’ll discuss it later, OK?” he says,

"Jason is complaining that Tyler is in the shop today"

and then explains to Eifion that Jason is complaining that Tyler is working in the shop today;  “I have to ask his permission first, it seems!”

Iolo seems disturbed that Tyler is starting back already, and Eifion is of the opinion that they do not need him back at all,

Tyler needs a job!"

but Iolo points out that he needs a job, as he has had a hard time.

"I have to organise the rota with Jason"

Mathew makes it clear that he is not getting rid of Tyler, but he needs to organise the rota with Jason first.

"Have you seen Lois?"

“Have you seen Lois?   She was bringing stuff from APD,” asks Iolo, and Eifion replies that he sent her to get him some lunch.

"She's not your maid!"

This does not go down well with Mathew;  “Oi!   She’s here to learn – not to be your maid!   Iolo, tell Eifion what we want –

"Eifion can fetch it!"

“and he can go and fetch it!”

"Who decided Eifion's working on site?"

At APD Jason demands, “Who decided that Eifion’s working on site, with Tyler staying here?”   Anita answers that is what Mathew said, and it makes sense, as it is his first day back today.   “Mathew should have discussed it with me first!” Jason insists.

"As long as there's someone here to help me"

She tells him not to take it out on her;  “As long as there’s someone here to help me, I don’t care who it is.”

"Delivery – one bacon bap!"

Kelly comes through the door;  “Delivery!   One bacon bap – and there’s more where that came from,” she says.   He describes her as an angel.

"Romantic meal for two tonight?"

and she goes on, “How about a romantic meal for two tonight?”   Jason reminds her about Ifan, so she amends it to, “OK, three, then?”

"Now the relationship's not hush-hush any more . . ."

Jason mutters, “It will be better than the romantic meal for five that we usually have – but there we go, now the relationship’s not hush-hush any more, perhaps they can go out.”

Kelly is just happy that Auntie Anita is happy, and he agrees with that,

"I'm looking forward to seeing a lot less of Uncle Ieu"

adding, “I’m just looking forward to seeing a lot less of Uncle Ieu!”   Then he realises that Anita is listening.

"APD is doing all right because of Ieuan"

She insists, “APD is doing all right because of Ieuan.”

Kelly is curious about this

Kelly’s interest is piqued by this, and Anita goes on, “How do you think we got that big contract?”

"Because Griffiths is romancing Auntie Neet?"

Kelly is horrified;  “You got that contract because Griffiths is romancing Auntie Neet?   Excuse me!”

"You mean you didn't know?"

He cannot believe that she did not know, and wonders where she has been.

"That's corruption, Jase!"

“That’s corruption, Jase!   People need to know!” she squeals.

Jason makes it clear that if anyone finds out, “Those two are in a lot of trouble – so just don’t – please.   All I want to think about is that nice romantic evening with you tonight.”

Tyler is not looking forward to going to APD

At number 7, Tyler tells Mark that he is not looking forward to going back to work today;  “Especially with Eifion around.”

"Do I need to put my name on my milk?"

Mark enquires whether he needs to put his name on his milk, as that is what Ricky and his mates do in their house;  each of them labels his own milk.

"No – there's no need for that"

Tyler says that will not be necessary.

“So there are no house rules, then?” Mark goes on, and is told that he should just put the toilet seat down.

Mark unpacks his slippers . . .

He unpacks his slippers and puts them on the floor,

. . . and is feeling at home already . . .

looking happy.

. . . whereas his mother is not happy . . .

Meanwhile at Maes-y-Deri, Kath is already feeling Mark’s absence,

. . . as she handles his postman's hat

as she looks at his postman’s hat, which has been left behind.   Brynmor comes in, reporting that Mark is in his element;

"It will be quiet here without him"

“I can’t believe how little stuff he’s got – it will be quiet here without him.”

"We'll get a rest from his moaning"

Kath replies, unenthusiastically, that they will at least get some respite from his moaning.

"Do you want to out for a spin later?"

“Do you want to go for a spin in the car later?” Brynmor asks her, “I can leave the garage for today,”

"I thought I'd call in on Mark"

but she says she has a shift in the shop – and thought that she would call in on Mark.

“He’s only just gone – he might want some time to settle at number 7,” he suggests, but she has an excuse;  returning the hat he left behind, down the sofa.   She is not really in the mood for a drive today,

"We could have a takeaway instead"

so he proposes that they should have a takeaway instead, just the two of them, at, say, seven o’clock.   Brynmor assures her that Mark will be all right, but she is far from convinced of this.

"I'll head up to the site now"

Tyler arrives at APD and is welcomed back by Anita;  “I’ll head up to the site now,” he says,

"You're working with me, washing clothes"

but he is informed that he will be working in the shop today, washing clothes with Anita.   “I’m on the laundry?” Tyler demands, angrily.   She is pleased that he is back as she has loads to do;  apparently there are two bags from Brynawelon,

"I'll make us a coffee"

but, to ease him into the job, she will make a coffee before they start.

"We need more 22mm pipes"

Then Eifion walks in, announcing that they need more 22mm pipes;  he immediately starts making fun of Tyler;

"Beti Bwt was doing laundry"

“There he is,” and he begins to sing, “Beti Bwt was doing laundry.” [The novel Beti Bwt depicts a vivid portrayal of life in a Welsh village in the 1950s]

Anita tells him to stop, so he continues, “Have the police caught the man who attacked you?”

"A stranger could walk into the Deri"

and Anita considers it terrible that a stranger could walk into the Deri and attack him.

"Plenty of people don't like him"

“Who said it was a stranger?” enquires Eifion, “He might know them – plenty of people don’t like him.”

"Get the pipes and go back to the site!"

Anita snarls at him to get the pipes and go back to the site now.

Tyler is becoming suspicious

His comments seem to have made Tyler uneasy.

"How's it going, Mark?"

Kath visits Mark at number 7, asking how it is going;

"Plenty of room, no clutter"

“I’m getting on great here – there’s plenty of room, no clutter,” he replies and she produces his hat, not wanting him to have a cold head.

She has brought him some supplies

“And I’ve brought you some supplies from the shop,” she continues, but he protests he can go to the shop himself.   She says that she gets a discount, and tins are handy to have around.   He tells her to put them in the kitchen and he will pay her back next week.

"Aren't you going to offer me a cup of tea?"

“Aren’t you going to offer me a cup of tea?” she asks, but he has not got time, needing to sort out his room.   He is thinking of buying a new quilt cover like Ricky’s.

"Corned Beef hash?"

Then his mother suggests that she could start cooking something for his dinner;  “Corned Beef hash?”   You used to shovel that down!”

"With plenty of mashed potato?"

Mark’s resolve is weakening already, and he agrees, provided there is plenty of mashed potato as well.

Kath is quite satisfied

She looks well pleased with her efforts.

"You were in the village a long time"

At Penrhewl, Sioned remarks to her mother that she was in the village for a long time;  “I had to cover Kath’s shift in the shop – she was in a panic about going to see Mark.   He’s been mollycoddled – he’s moved in with Tyler –

"She compared your situation with Mark's"

“and she has the cheek to compare your situation with Mark’s!   She said you’ll never leave home!”

"DJ and I have been discussing our plans"

“Well, she’s got that wrong,” Sioned points out, “DJ and I have been discussing our plans for the future.”

"For marriage?"

Eileen assumes that this means marriage, but is assured that they are happy as they are.

"We are talking about having a family"

“But we are talking about having a family – I thought you’d be happy we want children.”

Eileen replies that she would love to be a grandmother, and is told not to be so old-fashioned;

"Penrhewl is the perfect place to raise children"

“A piece of paper isn’t important – anyway, Penrhewl is a perfect place to raise children.   I’m going to sort out tomorrow’s orders.”

Eileen is concerned

Eileen looks worried.

Eifion is heading for the skip

As Eifion puts discarded items into a skip, he asks when Mathew will be meeting Jason;

"I don't want to argue with him"

“I don’t want to argue with him,” is the reply,

"Have a pint together in the Deri"

and Eifion suggests that they could have a pint together in the Deri after work before it has a chance to fester.

"Sorry for sending Lois on that errand"

Mathew will phone him now, and Eifion goes inside to see Iolo;  “Sorry for sending Lois on that errand earlier –

"Let me buy you a drink in the Deri"

“let me buy you drink tonight, in the Deri after work – Mathew’s coming.”

"I shall have to check with Dad"

Iolo will have to check with his father, as it is his turn to look after Greta.   Eifion describes it
as ‘team bonding’.

Brynmor is preparing for the meal

Brynmor has laid out the glasses and cutlery on the table in preparation for their takeaway meal

"Crispy duck and pancakes"

and is ordering the food by phone;  “Oh, yes – crispy duck and pancakes – she loves those.

"Seven o'clock on the dot?   That's great!"

“Everything will be here at seven o’clock on the dot?   That’s great.”

"If he's not too busy, awarding dodgy contracts"

Kelly asks Anita, “Seeing lover boy tonight?   If he’s not too busy, awarding dodgy contracts.”

"He's keen to see me"

Of course, Anita does not like this, pointing out that he is keen to see her although he is busy.   “I thought he’d take you out for a posh meal, you know, to celebrate the fact you’ve gone public,” Kelly adds.

“Well, I would have liked to have gone to Ieu’s house, but he’s coming here instead,” Auntie Anita replies,

"Behave yourself, Kelly!"

and when there is a knock at the door, she warns Kelly to behave.

Griffiths wants to watch the telly

Ieuan has brought a bottle with him, and says, “Midsomer Murders is on tonight – an episode I haven’t seen.   I’m an expert at guessing who the murderer is, even if I say so myself.”

Kelly is taking notice

Kelly is looking sceptical,

"Yes, I like a mystery"

as Anita agrees that she also likes a mystery.

"You're here – again!"

“Ieuan, isn’t this a surprise?  You’re here – again!” remarks Kelly,

"Yes –I can't stay away"

and he says that he cannot stay away.

Maes-y-Deri is in darkness . . .

Much later, Kath arrives back at Maes-y-Deri to find the place in darkness,

. . . with all the food on the table . . .

the food waiting on the table,

. . . and a note inviting Kath to help herself

together with a note, inviting her, ‘Help yourself – there’s crispy duck and a special meal for two.’

Kath feels guilty

She is very downhearted.

"I told you he was the murderer"

The episode has ended, and Griffiths boasts, “There we go – I told you he was the murderer, didn’t I?” and Anita offers him a coffee.

Ieuan's phone rings

His phone sounds and he appears very reluctant to answer it, so Kelly, peering round from the kitchen, wonders why.

"Are you going to answer that?"

“Are you going to answer that?” she enquires,

"Yes, right, I'll be there now"

and he does so, promising someone that he will be there now.

Kelly wants an explanation

Kelly sits down to listen to his explanation;

"A councillor's work is never done"

he puts on his jacket and maintains that it was someone asking about a report, adding that a councillor’s work is never done.

"Do you want some Amaretto in it?"

Anita asks whether to put some Amaretto in his coffee, but he announces that a problem has come up, and he needs a clear head to sort it out.   She insists that he is ‘off the clock’ till the morning,

"I can't ignore someone who needs help"

but Ieuan argues, “I’m not the sort of man to ignore someone who needs help,” and leaves the house,

Anita is severely irritated

which irritates Anita intensely.

"Where's Mathew, then?"

Eifion is at the bar in the Deri when Iolo comes in, and wonders where Mathew is;

"Problem with the staff"

“He couldn’t make it – problems with the staff,” is Eifion’s reply, “He wanted to go and see Jason.”

"Who's looking after Greta?"

Then Tyler also arrives and immediately wants to know who is looking after Greta;  he is told that she is with Siôn.   “If I’d known you would dump him with her, I would have looked after her,” he growls.

"After washing all those clothes!"

Eifion cannot resist winding him up with, “We thought you’d be too tired, after washing all those clothes,”

"Greta is nothing to do with you!"

but is abruptly reminded that Greta is nothing to do with him.

“You know what my problem is with you – you broke up my marriage, and now you’re trying to steal my job!” Tyler rages,

"I know you attacked me!"

“And I know you attacked me!”

"That's not true, Ty"

Iolo intervenes to point out that is not true, but Tyler is quite convinced that Eifion crept up behind him in the dark.

"Because he was with me!"

“You’re wrong – he didn’t attack you – because he was with me!” stresses Iolo,

Tyler storms off

and Tyler walks straight out of the pub.

Eifion reminds Iolo they were not together all night,

"Did you do it?"

and Iolo asks, “Did you do it?”

"I didn't do anything to Tyler"

Eifion stresses that he did not do anything to Tyler, and proposes that they should have that drink,

"I'm going to fetch Greta"

but Iolo has had enough and is going to fetch Greta.

"Sorry I'm late, Kelly"

Jason comes in through the back door of Bryntirion, apologising to Kelly for his late arrival;  “There were some staffing issues I needed to sort out with Mathew – again!”

"You missed the chilli for two"

Kelly informs him that he missed the chilli for two and a classic episode of Midsomer Murders;  “With Auntie Anita and Ieuan canoodling on the sofa.”

"Not in front of Ifan, I hope"

He hopes that this was not in front of Ifan, and enquires if Griffiths is still there;

"Do you know why, Jase?"

“He leaves at the same time every night – do you know why, Jase?” she informs him,

"His car turns into a pumpkin?"

and Jason sarcastically supposes that his car turns into a pumpkin after ten o’clock.

"Go on,  Miss Marple, tell me"

He invites Miss Marple to tell him;

"Auntie Anita's the 'bit on the side'!"

“Because he’s got another woman – Auntie Anita’s the ‘bit on the side’ – but she doesn’t know it yet.   First of all, you're asking me to compromise my journalistic integrity and keep quiet about a dodgy contract.   Now you’re asking me to keep quiet about Griffiths possibly two-timing my auntie!”

"You've got no proof, Kelly"

Jason emphasises that she said ‘possibly’;  “You’ve got no proof – you don’t know that for a fact – you’re just saying it because you don’t like him.   Only this morning you said how nice it is that that Auntie Neet is happy.”

"I'm going to keep my beady eyes on him, Jase!"

“And that’s why I’m going to keep my beady eyes on him, Jase!   He’s not allowed to mess Auntie Anita around – OK?” she vows.

Eileen appears worried

Eileen is looking concerned at Penrhewl;  Sioned comes in, recalling a toy that she had when she was a child – wooden animals and a farm.

"I hope you haven't given them to Huwi"

“You haven’t thrown them away have you?   I can’t find them.   And I hope you haven’t given them to Huwi –they’re mine, and I want to give them to my kids.”

Eileen invites her to sit down for a minute;

"A Shetland pony – there's plenty of room here"

“Do you know what I’d like to buy when we have children?” Sioned goes on, “A Shetland pony – there’s plenty of room here.”

“I want to talk to you about what we were discussing earlier,” her mother begins, and again Sioned refuses to get married.

"I want to be open with you about my plans"

“Yes, I know that, but, seeing that you’re being honest with me about your plans, I want to be open with you about my plans.

"I've done my will"

“I’ve done my will – after what happened to Jim, and having that virus, I thought it would be best to have everything in black and white, so we all know where we stand.”

"Leaving everything to the cats' home?"

“You’re not leaving everything to that cats home?” Sioned jokes, and is told, “You’ll get the shop and Cae Glas – you’ve worked so hard, you deserve it.

"Huwi will get Penrhewl"

“Huwi will get Penrhewl.”

Sioned is shocked

Sioned cannot believe this,

"Huwi will have a livelihood"

so it is explained that Penrhewl will ensure that Huwi has a livelihood until he passes it on to his son.

"That's not fair, Mam!"

“That’s not fair!   What about my children?” rages Sioned.

"I've made my decision, Sioned"

Eileen has made her decision, and thinks it will be best for everyone and for the farm.

Hell hath no fury like a Sioned scorned

Sioned is openmouthed with shock and anger.
