Iolo admonishes Eifion |
Still at work on site, Eifion tells Iolo that Jason is looking for him, and he replies, “Last night was supposed to be a pint between two friends, not a chance for you to annoy Tyler.”
"It's too early for that sort of noise!" |
Then they hear the discordant sound of Mathew singing, and Jason maintaining that it is far too early for that sort of noise. He tells Iolo that the tiling company phoned,
"When can the tilers start?" |
wanting to know when they can start; the reply is, “When I’ve finished.” Jason says that they think they are starting next week, which is what it says in the contract.
"Does it say I've got two pairs of hands?" |
“Does it say in the contract I have two pairs of hands?” Iolo demands, “There we are then!” All the while the tuneless drone of Mathew’s singing can be heard, and Jason shouts at him to stop.
"Should we both talk to her?" |
At Penrhewl, DJ, who has been told the news, wonders if they should both talk to Eileen; “She’s made her decision – Huwi-John is getting the farm!” Sioned snarls,
"There's no point" |
“There’s no point you having a word with her – she’s even appointed the solicitor as executor, instead of me.”
DJ is quite aware that the two of them do not always agree,
"I'm disappointed in her" |
“But she’s gone too far this time – I’m disappointed in her.” Eileen is just walking in through the door
"Sorry I've disappointed you" |
and is sorry that she has disappointed him.
“You’ve been a good worker, but I’m not going to change my mind,” she confirms,
"See – there's no point in arguing" |
and Sioned says that shows there is no point in arguing. “You need a man to run the farm,” her mother continues.
"Last time I looked, DJ was a man" |
“Oh, please, Mam! And by the way, last time I looked, DJ was a man,” Sioned moans.
"I don't understand your problem" |
Her mother does not understand her problem, as she is getting Cae Glas, the shop and the café (about which we have heard nothing recently).
Sioned makes it clear that those businesses are totally reliant on the farm and she will not have any control of them.
"What if something happened to you – or Huwi?" |
“What if something happened to you while Huwi’s still small? Or what if something happened to Huwi? What then?” as she marches out of the room.
"After all she's done for you, Eileen" |
DJ is about to follow her, not able to believe what Eileen is doing to her daughter, after all she has done for her mother and the farm.
Brynmor has found a table skittles game |
Outside the garage, Brynmor has been searching through his treasure trove and come up with a table skittles game; Mark maintains that it is just the thing for number 7. Brynmor presumes that it is a moving-in present.
"Hiya, boys" |
Wilko approaches quietly, and Mark comments, “Do the cops train you to creep up on people like that, or is it just natural talent?
"Anyone would think you were wearing slippers' |
“Anyone would think you were wearing slippers.”
Tyler looks down and sees. . . |
Tyler smiles and then looks down
. . . those boots again |
to see Wilko’s boots, as Brynmor goes back inside to fetch the skittles.
"Nice boots" |
“Nice boots,” Tyler remarks, and Wilko replies that they are common enough. “I’m sure I’ve seen those boots before –
"I remember them clearly" |
“I remember them clearly,” says Tyler.
The skittles having been found, Mark and Tyler head back to number 7,
"I don't think they like me very much" |
with the DI watching them go. “I don’t think either of them like me very much,” he comments to Brynmor,
"Mark is not keen on the police, full stop" |
who replies that Mark is not keen on the police, full stop. Wilko puts down a magazine for Brynmor
"I wouldn't be surprised of they started making up stories" |
and goes on, “I wouldn’t be surprised if those two started making up stories about me to undermine me – you saw how they were with me, didn’t you? I’ve finished with that magazine.”
Brynmor 's suspicions continue |
Brynmor continues to look suspicious.
Sioned is not speaking to her mother |
Sioned is giving her mother the silent treatment;
"Can we talk about this, Sioned?" |
Eileen would like to talk with her daughter about it, but Sioned growls, “About what? Your obsession with some old-fashioned tradition
"Where the boys get everything" |
“where the boys get everything and the girls have to accept it?”
"He's not getting everything" |
Eileen insists that Huwi-John is not getting everything,
"Everything important!" |
but is told, “Everything important – the businesses aren’t worth anything without the farm! What if Huwi doesn’t want to be a farmer? What if he wants to sell the whole lot and move away? What’s happened to you? I thought you were a strong, modern woman. Does Huwi-John deserve everything because he’s a boy?
"What if John hadn't died?" |
Then she changes tack; “What would have happened if John hadn’t died?
"Don't go there, Sioned" |
“Come on, it’s a fair question, Mam –
"Would you leave it to him or me?" |
“if John hadn’t died, what would you have done with the farm? Leave it to him or to me?”
"To John, the eldest" |
Eileen replies that she would have left it to John, the eldest.
"I'm the eldest – but I'm a girl!" |
Sioned furiously points out that she is now the eldest; “But I’m a girl! I’ve always suspected that you would have preferred it if I’d died, instead of John – and now you’ve confirmed it!”
Off goes Sioned in a rage |
She marches out of the house, as her mother is left in tears, wailing, “That’s a terrible thing to say,”
"What's the matter, Eileen?" |
and at that moment, Jaclyn comes in,
She cannot explain |
and Eileen is unable to explain, through her sobs.
Mark appears to be good at this |
At number 7, Mark is demonstrating his prowess at table skittles, but Tyler is not interested.
"Look, forget about Wilko" |
“Look, forget about Wilko – I don’t like him any more than you, but what you’re saying doesn’t make much sense,” Mark says.
"I know I saw those boots!" |
Tyler is quite adamant that he saw those boots;
"Why would he still be wearing them?" |
“Right – if he did attack you, why would he still be wearing those boots around?” Mark wonders, “And why would he want to injure you in the first place?” Tyler does not know the answer to that, but is certain he does know what he saw.
"I'm going for a walk" |
Now he is going out for walk, as he has a headache, but is advised not to go anywhere near Wilko; “There’s no point throwing accusations around.”
All has been explained to Jaclyn |
Eileen has now calmed down and Jaclyn says that what she is doing is fair enough. “Sioned and Huwi are lucky to have a careful mother who thinks about their future.
"Sioned speaks without thinking" |
“You know Sioned – she gets angry and speaks without thinking. You two are used to falling out.”
Eileen does not like upsetting Sioned; “She’s hurt now – and when she’s hurt, she’s dangerous!
"I have no idea what she's going to do next!" |
“I’m worried because I’m not going to change my mind – and I have no idea what she’s going to do next.”
Two random girls walk across the street |
Two girls walk across the zebra crossing in the village as Sioned has bought some flowers from the shop;
"Are they for someone special?" |
Tyler asks if they are for someone special,
"Yes" |
and she replies, “Yes,” but says no more.
Tyler is on surveillance duties . . . |
He is standing in a concealed position, keeping watch on Wilko’s house; his patience is soon rewarded when the DI emerges and goes next door to the Deri.
. . . and considers his next move |
Tyler deliberates on what he will do next.
Lois asks questions about plumbing |
On the building site, Lois summarises, “So PVC pipes are better,” and Iolo points out that they may be easier,
"Copper pipes are better in constricted areas" |
but copper pipes are better in restricted areas, and the joints are supposed to last longer. He asks her to pass him the silicone gun, just as Eifion comes out with a cup of tea.
"Would it have killed you to make us a cup?" |
“Would it have killed you to make us a cup as well?” Lois enquires, and he alleges that she is the tea boy. As Iolo walks away to take a phone call,
"Which are better – copper or plastic pipes?" |
she asks, “Tell me, Eifion, which are better, copper or plastic pipes?” He has no idea,
"Stick to filling the skip and making tea!" |
so she tells him, “Stick to filling the skip and making the tea!”
Iolo has an emergency call-out |
Iolo reports that he has to go, as the boiler in the café at Llanarthur is on the blink; Eifion protests that he cannot just go, but Lois is perfectly willing to clear up stuff for him, so he leaves.
Eifion wonders what Lois knows about plumbing, and she answers, “More than you, obviously.”
"Oh – Mathew's off again!" |
Then from inside come the sounds of Mathew singing ‘Myfanwy’ in his own inimitable manner.
"It's not official" |
Wilko visits number 7 and asks Mark if Tyler is there; “I want a word with you about him,” he says, “It’s confidential – can I sit down? It’s not official,”
"Good" |
which Mark is glad about. “Look, I know you don’t like me – and that’s fine – but I also know that you get on well with Dani.”
Mark confirms that they have been friends for years, and the DI alleges that he is there for her sake.
"I'm worried about Tyler's mental state" |
“I’m worried about Tyler – his mental state – when he stayed in the Deri, his behaviour was quite odd. He got up at night for water, left the tap running and remembered nothing in the morning. Dani’s worried – he’s suffered a serious head injury – who knows what the long term effects will be?”
"He said he had a headache earlier" |
Mark recalls that he said earlier he had a headache, and Wilko regards that as confirmation; “Has he remembered anything or said anything about the attack?” he asks, and Mark replies that he has not.
"Keep an eye on him" |
“Do me a favour and keep an eye on him,” Wilko asks, “If he does remember something, or starts to act oddly, tell me, not Dani –
"I don't want Dani getting more upset" |
“I don’t want her getting more upset.”
The back door opens |
The back door opens and Tyler returns, so the DI makes a hasty exit;
"What did he want?" |
“What did he want?” Tyler demands,
"He wanted to look at the skittles" |
and Mark makes up some story about him wanting to have a closer look at the skittles,
"Pull the other one!" |
which Tyler does not believe.
"We shall have to carry on with 'Calon Lan', then" |
At the chip shop flat Ffion is talking to Colin about the choir; “We shall just have to carry on with ‘Calon Lan,’ then,” Colin sighs, but she points out that it would be nice to learn a new song as well. He suggests, “Myfanwy?” and Ffion calls that a bit predictable.
"I've got the very song – 'Y Cwm'!" |
Then he suddenly has a flash of inspiration, “Hold the boat!” he exclaims, “I’ve got the very song – ‘Y Cwm’! Singing and harmonising about love for the valley.”
"But Mathew stays at the back" |
Ffion has a proviso; that Mathew stays at the back,
"What are we going to do about him?" |
and Colin wonders what they are going to do about him. “I don’t know what we can do without breaking his heart,” she sighs. Colin suggests that they find a tune that is really, really simple,
"He can't hold a note in a bucket!" |
but she is sure, “If we sang ‘Gee Ceffyl Bach’ [‘Gee Little Horse’, a popular Welsh nursery rhyme], he would still be out of tune. He can’t hold a note in a bucket, Colin!”
"But the poor chap is so keen!" |
He points out that the poor chap is so keen, and Ffion concludes that ‘Y Cwm’ it is,
"Right at the back" |
and they will put Math right at the back.
Arwen will also be there tonight |
“If you don’t mind, I will have to bring Arwen with me to tonight’s rehearsal,” Ffion adds.
The day's work is over |
Eifion and Lois are back from the building site in the APD van,
"How did it go, then?" |
and Jason asks how the afternoon went;
"Apart from Iolo skiving!" |
“Fine – apart from Iolo skiving!” Eifion replies,
"I did a lot of the preparatory work" |
and Lois explains that he had to deal with an emergency call-out, but she did a lot of the preparatory work.
Eifion quips, “It won’t take her long to lay gas pipelines to America!”
"Iolo should take you on as an apprentice" |
and Jason maintains that Iolo ought to take her on as an apprentice, arguing that they have a lot of old ladies on their books, who would prefer to have a woman in the house, rather than . . .”
Jason points towards Eifion |
He points disparagingly towards Eifion, who says that women are not much use carting bricks and cement.
"You're more prejudiced than Aaron!" |
Lois accuses him of being more prejudiced than Aaron, but he regards it as simply fact.
"Where's Michael Bublé, then?" |
Jason asks what has become of ‘Michael Bublé’ – meaning Mathew, and learns that he has gone home for a shower before choir practice.
"Thanks for your help today, Lois!" |
Jason thanks Lois for her help today, and they all head homewards.
"I assumed you wouldn't want to eat with me" |
As Sioned fills the kettle, her mother is doing the ironing, and comments, “I haven’t made tea – I assumed you wouldn’t want to eat with me.”
"I'll have something when DJ gets back" |
Sioned decides that she will have something with DJ when he comes back from choir practice.
"Jaclyn thinks I'm being very fair" |
“I was talking to Jaclyn earlier – she thinks I’m being very fair,” Eileen goes on,
"What does she know about farming?" |
and Sioned sneers that she does not know much about farming.
"She knows about love and family" |
“Perhaps not, but she does know about love and family.”
"You couldn't care less about me" |
Sioned is very much aware that her mother could not care less about her, but is accused of not caring about Huwi’s future.
“What about DJ? Have you thought how your decision will impact his future – after everything he’s done for you?”
"He can work with you" |
Her mother suggests that he can work in the shop and café with her.
"Dad would be heartbroken by this!" |
“I went to Dad’s grave today – I was there all afternoon,” says Sioned, “He’d be heartbroken by this – but you made your decision – there’s nothing I can do.” Her mother is glad that she understands that. “I’ve done everything for you – and for this place – a place that means everything to me, but you’re the one who has to live with this decision, Mam! I just hope you won’t regret it.”
Everyone disperses after choir practice |
As they leave the chapel after choir practice, Brynmor is returning to Maes-y-Deri, and Siôn is also going home.
"It's Mathew's round at the Deri" |
Eifion wants to know what is wrong with everyone, and insists that it is Mathew’s round at the Deri.
"You can't sing!" |
Arwen comes out of the chapel and does not mince her words; “You can’t sing!” she tells Mathew,
He attempts to prove otherwise . . . |
who immediately launches into a verse of ‘Calon Lan’
. . . and she shouts at him to stop |
until she urges him to stop.
"Everyone's too nice to tell you" |
“You’re terrible and you’re out of tune! Everybody’s too nice to tell you.”
Eifion and Colin melt away into the darkness,
"Thanks for being honest, Arwen" |
and Mathew thanks her for being honest; “At least the truth is out now, isn’t it?”
Ffion and Arwen go home |
Ffion summons her daughter to come home, which is only a few doors away.
"I had to wait for fresh chips, Ty" |
Mark returns to number 7, apologising to Tyler that he had to wait for fresh chips; Tyler had forgotten to put the plates in the oven to warm,
"I think I should phone the police" |
and suggests, “I think I should phone the police because of what Wilko did to me.”
"You've got no proof, have you?" |
Mark stresses that he does not have proof.
"I know I'm right!" |
“I know I’m right – I don’t know how or why, but I know I am!” Tyler insists.
“We’re mates, and we trust each other, don't we, Ty? Trust me now that you’re not making a lot of sense –
"You had a bad knock to the head" |
“I’m worried about you, right? You had a bad knock to the head.”
"What did he say when he was here?" |
“Come on – tell the truth – what did he say when he was here?” Tyler demands, “I know – the skittles, yeah, yeah! Forget the chips,” he shouts, as he seizes his jacket and walks out of the house.
"I suppose you could mime" |
In the Deri, Colin suggests that he could mime, but Mathew cannot believe that he is that bad. Eifion wonders if he could do something else,
"All a choir does is sing!" |
but he points out that all a choir does is to sing.
"Master of the Robes" |
“You could be ‘Master of the Robes’, is Colin’s next idea, “Choose what we wear for gigs and tours and things.”
"I'm not wearing a kilt" |
“As long as you don’t choose Welsh flannel or kilts!” warns Eifion, but Colin maintains that he has very good legs.
"Miss World legs, Mam-gu Mwnt used to say" |
“Mam-gu Mwnt used to call them ‘Miss World Legs’!’ he boasts; however Eifion refuses to wear a skirt.
"All right – I'll do it" |
Mathew decides that he will do it, and goes across to the bar,
"Three pints, please, Ger" |
requesting three pints from Geraint.
Tyler confronts Wilko |
Tyler knocks on the door of Wilko’s house
"I know you attacked me!" |
and informs him, “I know you attacked me!” The DI laughs at the suggestion, pointing out that no-one would believe him anyway.
"Proof is exactly what I'm going to get!" |
“Not until I’ve got proof – and that’s exactly what I’m going to get!” Tyler snarls, looking down at Wilko’s boots. “I’m going to make you pay for this!”
"Stop making a fool of yourself" |
He is told to stop making a fool of himself and the door is closed in his face.
Wilko removes his boots |
Wilko goes to a cupboard and takes out a rubbish sack; he removes his boots, and then his phone rings with a call from Dani.
"I'm looking forward to seeing you" |
“I’ve just got home from work – I won’t be long. I’m looking forward to seeing you.”
The boots go into the sack . . . |
puts the boots into the sack
. . . and are taken outside |
and takes it outside the back door.
