12 July 2021

Garry looks out from his captivity

We see the view of Garry taken by the security camera in the interview room, as he looks out of the barred window.

The interview begins

DI Wilkinson comes in to begin the interview and Garry sits down.

"We have a warrant for further detention"

“Recording starts at 11:01am on 12 July 2021,” says the DI, “It’s been confirmed that I've been given a warrant for further detention – do you understand what that means, Mr Monk?”

"Is Jaclyn OK?"

All that concerns Garry is whether Jaclyn is OK, but that cannot be discussed with him.   “What’s the situation between you and Jaclyn Parri,” he is asked,

"Are you still in a close relationship?"

“Are you still in a close relationship?”

Garry explains that, as he has already said, they had an affair which is now over;  she is working for him as a chef in the Deri.

"Like I said, it's complicated"

“Like I said, it’s complicated.”   The DI asks if it is complicated enough that he wants to get rid of her, and is informed, “Jaclyn and I understand each other – she’s fine with that – and when you question her, she’ll say the same thing.   She will also say that Dylan was trying to shoot me and not her – she just stepped between us.”

"We have a statement saying you were holding the gun"

DI Wilkinson enquires, “We have a statement saying you were holding the gun, pointing it at Dylan – would you like to elaborate?”

"I was trying to force him to tell Dani the truth"

Garry sighs and begins, “It was Dylan’s gun – the only reason it was in my hand was I was trying to force him to tell Dani the truth.   I was going to phone the police to report him – it’s a long story!”

"I've got all day, Mr Monk"

The DI assures him that he has all day.

"He's a drug dealer who tried to kill me – twice!"

Garry resumes, “Dylan Ellis is a drug dealer – one who’s tried to kill me – twice!”

Siôn has actually had a customer

Tyler has purchased a couple of books from Siôn’s shop, one for Greta and the other for Seren.

"Has Iolo talked to you about Brychan?"

Siôn cannot resist the opportunity to ask, “Has Iolo talked to you about Brychan?” but Tyler cannot imagine why Iolo would talk to him about his new boyfriend.

Aled has just come in, bringing the cashbox for Tesni, who has gone to the hospital;

"They're not sure if she will pull through"

he informs them that Jaclyn is sedated at the moment, and they are not sure if she will pull through.   He feels rather uncomfortable, being with Tyler, and hurriedly leaves again.

"It is all a mess"

Siôn comments that it is all a mess,

"Dani's in a state as well – and the children"

and Tyler adds, “Dani’s in a state as well – and the children.”   Siôn will not accept any payment for the books,

After some thought . . .

and when Tyler has gone, he get out his phone,

. . . Siôn sends a text to Tesni

sending a short message to Tesni;  “Thinking of you.  x”

"The bullet is in a plastic bag at number 7"

Garry continues with his evidence, “The bullet that was removed from my body after Dylan shot me is in a plastic bag in number 7, High Street, Cwmderi.   If you go to Dylan’s house, you’ll find the drugs on the table in the lounge.”

"Were you treated after being shot?"

The DI asks if he was treated after being shot,

"In case Dylan found out I was still alive"

and Garry replies, “No – it wouldn’t be safe for me to be treated, in case Dylan found out I was still alive – he’s a dangerous man.”   He is asked why he did not phone the police,

"Believe it or not, I just don't trust you!"

and scornfully remarks, “Believe it or not, I just don’t trust you!”

"It makes sense you would want revenge"

The DI tells him, “If this is all true, Mr Monk, it makes sense to me that you would want revenge.   It makes sense that you were holding the gun, aiming it at Dylan Ellis, and Jaclyn tried to stop you.”

“Well, you can think that – but that is not what happened!” Garry points out, and his interviewer would like to know why Mr Ellis would want to shoot him – twice.

"Jaclyn and I wanted to run away together"

“The first time,” says Garry, getting up from his chair, “Jaclyn and I wanted to run away together – Dylan didn’t want that to happen.   He hated the fact that she was having an affair –

"He is obsessed with his sister"

“he is obsessed with his sister, so he tried to stop me.”

“So Mr Ellis stopped you and Jaclyn from being in a relationship?” says the DI,

"So you have a vendetta against him?"

“So you have a vendetta against him?”   Garry objects to the word ‘vendetta’,

"I just don't like drug dealers – do you?"

insisting that he just does not like drug dealers.

"What about the second time?"

Then he is asked about the second time Dylan tried to shoot him;

"I was forcing him to tell Dani the truth"

“It was because he was angry that I was forcing him to tell Dani the truth about what he’s like – that he had tried to kill me.”

"Now to Dani Monk"

Then the questions turn to Dani Monk;

"We're separated – on good terms"

Garry explains, “We’re separated – on good terms.   We share businesses, child care – she’s expecting Dylan’s baby.”   The DI wonders how he feels about that – is he happy?   “Ecstatic!” Garry snarls.

"Would you say you're angry?"

“Would you say you’re angry that your wife is expecting a baby with the man who tried to kill you?” he is asked.

"I was not the one who fired the gun!"

Again Garry makes it perfectly clear that it was not him who fired the gun.

"She's still sedated in the ICU"

Tesni arrives home from the hospital and tells Aled that there is no change;  “She’s still sedated in the ICU.”

"She'll be all right, Tesni"

Aled encourages her that her mother is tough and will be all right.   “What if she’s not?” sobs Tesni, and does not want anything to eat,

"I'll go up for a nap"

but will go and have a nap.

Still no contact from Dylan

Aled has also not heard anything about Dylan, so he dials the number

"Just answer the phone, please, Dad!"

and says, “Just answer the phone, please, Dad!”

"Brychan's shy"

Outside the shop Iolo is talking to Kelly;  “Brychan’s shy – he finds meeting new people hard,” and she hopes that he has told Brychan what an amazing friend she is.   “Well, we don’t talk much,” he says.

"Have you . . . you know?"

She presumes that they have . . . “You know – is he handsome?   Nice body?   I’m excited for you – make sure he respects you – you deserve it.   I love Tyler –

"Tyler treated you like . . ."

“but he treated you like . . . and I’ll never forgive him!”

"I've forgiven him, Kelly"

Iolo says that he has forgiven him, and Kelly concludes, “You’re a better person than me – so enjoy yourself with Brychan –

"The mysterious fitty"

“the mysterious fitty!”

DI Wilkinson visits number 9

As Iolo is about to go in through the front door of number 7, DI Wilkinson is knocking on the door of number 9.

"Don't leave the flat, Mam"

In the chip shop flat, Aaron is in a very nervous state;  he begs his mother and Colin not to leave the flat.

"Don't answer it, Colin!"

When the buzzer sounds, he urges Colin not to answer it, throwing a cushion across the room.   They wonder what on earth is going on.   “Come on – I don’t like seeing you like this,” his mother worries.

"It's my fault that Garry's in jail!"

“It’s my fault that Garry’s in jail!” Aaron admits,

"Dylan's been forcing me to deal drugs"

“He was angry because Dylan had been forcing me to deal drugs for him.”

They cannot believe it

Britt and Colin look at each other with horror.

"I found out he had been unfaithful"

At number 9, Sara is telling the DI, “I found out he had been unfaithful, so I ended things.”

"With Dani Monk?"

He assumes that she means with Dani Monk, but she points out there were other women as well;

"I don't know where he is"

she does not know the current whereabouts of Dylan, as they finished a while ago.

"Did you ever see him with a gun, or drugs?"

She is asked whether she ever saw him with a gun or drugs,

"No, never"

and she denies this;  the DI says that have not yet charged Garry.   He asks, “Is there anything else you can tell me about Mr Ellis?   Would you say he’s a dangerous man?

"We have a record of a phone call you made"

“Miss Francis, we have a record of a phone call you made – you were worried that Mr Ellis had hurt Dani Monk.”

"I just wanted to get my own back"

She dismisses that as a misunderstanding, and simply wanted to get her own back because of his infidelity.

"Wasting police time is a serious matter"

“So you lied to the police – you understand that wasting police time is a serious matter?   Why are you protecting him, Miss Francis?”

"I'm scared of what he could do"

After some thought, she explains, “Because I’m scared of what he could do.”

"So Dylan's been forcing you to do this for weeks?"

“So Dylan’s been forcing you to do this for weeks – and Garry knew?” Britt demands, “Why didn’t you come to us?”

"I couldn't, Mam"

Aaron replies that he could not,

"Everything will be all right now"

and Colin assures them that everything will be all right now.   Britt rages, “It looks like Garry did shoot Dylan – I could strangle him!”

"Aaron's the victim here!"

Colin points out that Aaron needs to go to the police now;  “He’s the victim here!”

"Dylan will kill me!"

However, Aaron refuses to go to the police, as Dylan will kill him.   “The police will make sure you’re safe from Dylan,” Colin rather naïvely insists, “It’s not right that he gets away.”

"I'm his mother, and I say no!"

Britt makes it perfectly clear that they are not going to involve the police;  “I’m his mother, and I say no!”

"He could scare me sometimes"

Sara continues that Dylan never hurt her, but he could scare her sometimes;  “Don’t tell him I said that.   I have no idea where he could be –

"His friend in Swansea – Daf Morris"

“the only place he’d disappear to was his friend in Swansea – Daf Morris.”

"Dafydd Morris?"

This name immediately attracts the DI’s attention;  “Dafydd Morris?   Do you think they were in business together?”

"He was a supplier for Tapas"

Sara was told that he was a supplier for Tapas, but Dylan said a lot of things.   She assumes that he knows who Daf Morris is,

"I've come across his name a few times"

and DI Wilkinson has come across his name a few times.

Sara is immediately concerned;  “Is he dangerous?   He’s been around my son.”   She is told that she has no reason to worry,

Sara is given the DI's direct line number

but is given a card bearing the DI’s direct line number.

“If you hear from Dafydd Morris or Dylan Ellis, can you please phone?” he says, “Or if you think of anything else that’s relevant.”

"I did put a tracker of his phone once"

As he is about to leave, Sara confesses that she did put a tracker on Dylan’s phone for a few months, if that would be of any help.

"Can I take your phone?"

The DI asks to take her phone, to see if there is any pattern.

"Any news on Dylan Ellis?"

She goes upstairs to fetch the phone, and the detective makes a call to the police station;  “Any news on Dylan Ellis?   The minute you find him, I want to talk to him –

"I want everything you have on Dafydd Morris"

“and I want everything you have on Dafydd Morris on my desk.”

Iolo finds . . .

When Iolo comes downstairs at number 7, he finds Tyler dressed as the mythical Brychan;

. . . Brychan, the imaginary librarian

“Well hello, sexy – are you pleased to see Brychan?   What do you want to do tonight?   Go out for a meal – clubbing?   Or do you want to go back upstairs?”

"My head's all over the place at the moment"

Iolo regards this as rather weird;  “My head’s all over the place at the moment – all this stuff with Garry.”

"More of a reason to go for a date tonight"

Tyler maintains that is more of a reason to go out for a date tonight – to enjoy themselves and forget about things.

"I want to go out with Tyler, not Brychan"

Iolo eventually agrees, “But I want to go out with Tyler, not Brychan.   Go and get changed.”

DI Wilkinson returns to Garry . . .

Garry is becoming rather disheartened as the DI returns to the interview room;  he wants to say something off the record before the tape is turned on.   “Have you found Dylan?”

. . . and the interview resumes at 4:25pm

There is no reply, but the recorder is turned on, resuming the interview at 4:25pm.

“For the benefit of the tape, I am showing Mr Garry Monk item MW1 – do you know him?”

Garry is shown a photo of Daf . . .

Garry looks at the photograph of Daf and says that he does not recognise him, neither does the name Dafydd Morris mean anything to him.

. . . which he says he does not recognise

“Why?   What’s he got to do with anything?” Garry asks, and the interview is paused, with the DI immediately leaving the room.

"Am I free to go?"

“Am I free to go?” Garry demands,

"Not yet"

but is told that he cannot go yet.

Siôn visits Tesni – again

Siôn has visited number 9, and when Tesni comes downstairs, Aled is ready to leave for work;

"He's brought you a book"

“Siôn’s brought you a book,” he says as he goes.

"Are you OK?"

Siôn asks if she is OK and explains the book is something to take her mind off things – if that is possible.

"There is still no change"

She says rather unconvincingly that she is all right, but there is still no change in her mother’s condition.   Siôn is very sorry to hear that, and she appreciated his text.

"I wanted you to know I was thinking of you"

“I just wanted you to know I was thinking of you,” he continues,

An embarrassing silence ensues

and there is an awkward silence;  “Right, I’d better be going.   If you need anything, just let me know.”

"Garry, are you all right?"

Britt is speaking to Garry on the phone;  she wants to know if he is all right,

"I'm in trouble, Britt – they don't believe me"

but he groans, “I’m in trouble, Britt – they don’t believe me.”

“I don’t know what to believe after talking to Aaron,” she growls, and he warns her that the police could be listening to the call.

“By the way, Aaron told me about you helping him to find work – it’s my job to do that, Garry, not yours!   How could you hide that from me?”

"Do you want me to phone a solicitor?"

He insists that it is important nobody finds out that he helped Aaron, and they agree on that.   “What do you want me to do?   Phone a solicitor?” she asks, but he promises her that he is innocent – Dylan tried to shoot him;

"Fid out how Jaclyn is – and what she has said"

he demands that Britt find out how Jaclyn is – and what she has said.   He will phone again if he has the chance.

"Perhaps he is guilty"

Britt tells Colin that it is not going well;  “The police don’t believe him.”   Colin suggest that perhaps he is guilty, as she heard what Aaron said.

"Dylan tried to shoot him!"

Britt is quite adamant that he is innocent;  “Dylan tried to shoot him – he’s just told me!”   Colin maintains that is even more of a reason for Aaron to tell the police the truth.   “No, Garry wants us to keep it quiet,” she replies.

Aaron is listenng

As Colin insists that Aaron’s testimony could help them build a case against Dylan, rather than Garry, we see Aaron peering round a door in the background.

"I'm not going to lose Aaron!"

Britt’s mind is made up;  “Stay out of this, Col!   Perhaps I’ve already lost Garry, but I’m not going to lose Aaron!”

Aaron is dialling 9 9 9

At that moment Aaron is dialling 999 on his phone.
