Sioned comes out of the farmhouse . . .
Sioned comes out of the farmhouse
. . . and picks up a toy tractor
and picks up a toy tractor from the ground, placing it on a wall.
She looks all around
She stands in the sunshine and looks at the scene around her. When Howard approaches, she does not notice him at first; he asks if she is OK
"I'm busy"
and she replies, “Busy,” before hurrying off.
"Like every farmer"
“Like every farmer,” he comments and is looking puzzled.
Three guesses as to what they have been doing
At number 9, Eleri comes downstairs, fastening her trousers, followed by Jinx; he protests, “You can’t go now – you haven’t seen the pain au chocolat.”
"It's important to say hello"
She blames him for dragging her upstairs, so he points out that it is important to say hello.
"Sometimes I think that's all you want"
“Sometimes I think that’s all you want!” she replies, rather curtly. He hopes that he will see her tonight, but she replies, “You’ll see me a lot sooner than that – the music session at Brynawelon – don’t say you’ve forgotten?”
Eleri is off to work
Off she goes to work.
"I'm still not sure about this"
Sioned takes two slices of toast from the toaster and, as she puts them on the table, Mathew says, “Look, I’m still not sure about this – leaving Penrhewl?” Sioned maintains that they have no choice,
'Where are we going to live?"
but he asks, “Where are we going to live? What are we going to do?”
"We have APD and Tamed"
She reminds him that he has APD and she has a share in Tamed, but Mathew maintains that Tamed is not going to be enough to support a family,
"Who knows what shape will APD be in?"
“And who knows what sort of shape APD will be by the time I go back?”
She informs him that she can get another job, but he stresses that she what she wants is to do less, rather than more.
"9 to 5 – not 24/7"
“Yes, 9 to 5 – not 24–7, like this place,” she replies
Mathew blames himself for what has happened; “If only I’d been more careful, spent more time lambing – and avoided this blinkin’ accident!”
"I don't think about anything else"
She would feel the same in his place, but he pleads with her not to be hasty; she answers that she thinks about nothing else
"What are you discussing?"
and at that moment Howard comes in, asking what they are discussing, but there is no reply.
"Perhaps I shouldn't asks"
“Perhaps I shouldn’t ask,” he goes on. Sioned tells him that there is tea in the pot and his breakfast is ready; she has to go to the village as they need a few things and will be calling to see her mother on the way home. Howard can sense that something is going on.
Jinx is singing at Brynawelon
At Brynawelon, five of the residents are being led in a sing-song by Jinx, the present song being ‘Calon Lan’.
Anita is singing
♫“None but a pure heart can sing,
Sing in the day and in the night.”♫
They will have a break
He says that they will have a five minute break and then he will take requests.
Anita wants Calon Lan again
Anita immediately makes a request, “Calon Lan”; Jinx says that everyone is fed up with that, but she insists, “No, I like that one.” She starts singing to herself, “I don’t ask for a luxurious life.”
"You're good with them"
Eleri remarks that Jinx is good with them and he explains that he is used to it after looking after his grandfather. She has work to do,
"What did you mean this morning?"
but he is anxious to find out what she meant this morning, by maintaining that he was ‘only after one thing’.
"I'll make dinner tonight"
He proposes to make dinner for them tonight.
“A singer and a chef – wow!” she exclaims, adding that she does not want any wine, as she needs a clear head tomorrow.
"Before the audience falls asleep"
“Now go back and start singing before the audience falls asleep.”
"We haven't got a spare builder"
Ieuan is at APD, fielding a phone complaint; “I know I promised and I’m sorry to disappoint you, but we haven’t got a spare builder at the moment.” The complainant abruptly ends the call, so he snarls, “Goodbye to you, too!” just as Diane comes in.
"Batteries for the TV remote"
She needs some batteries for the TV remote, the small ones; “Actually, I’ll have two – Dai doesn’t stop playing with it.
"Is everything all right here?"
“Is everything all right here?”
Ieuan tries to pretend that everything is fine, but she adds, “You just don’t have any builders.
"I heard every word"
“I heard every word– and I’ve heard several people complain that APD has let them down recently.”
"Mathew can hardly climb the stairs"
Ieuan points out that Matthew can only just about climb the stairs, never mind a ladder, so she wants to know where Howard is. “If I knew that, I’d be a millionaire,” he answers.
"I can look after the shop"
She proposes to look after the shop,
"I'm not a builder, Diane"
but he protests that he is not a builder. “No, but you can go and see Mathew – he may not be able to move far, but he can phone and find the builders –
"He can give Howard an earful!"
“and he can give Howard an earful!”
Ieuan is reluctant to disturb Mathew, but she points out that he is the boss; “Dai and I worked too hard to see this place go bust! So off you go!”
Then the phone rings, so Diane immediately picks it up;
"Good morning, Diane Ashurst speaking"
“APD, good morning, Diane Ashurst speaking.”
"They won't impress Eleri"
In the deli, Sioned predicts that the quiches Jinx has just purchased will not impress Eleri. He informs her that he is going to make a salad and new potatoes to go with them, then wonders who mentioned Eleri.
“You’re not trying to impress anyone else, are you? A woman like her wants style and fuss, not a quiche – although they are lovely, of course.”
"Make sure you put plenty of butter on the potatoes"
Eileen, on the other hand, tells him not to take any notice, but to make sure he puts plenty of butter on the potatoes.
"Do you just want to upset my customers?"
When he has gone, Eileen asks, “Do you want something – or do you just want to upset my customers?”
"I want to sell Penrhewl"
Sioned makes the stark announcement, “I want to sell Penrhewl!”
Eileen was not expecting that
which causes her mother extreme surprise.
Ieuan is at the farmhouse; “I don’t want you to think I’m moaning, but the business will be ruined if things carry on like this. I’ve been on my own at APD for weeks.”
Howard has come in and is listening
Howard has just come in through the front door and listens to this conversation, as Mathew points out that Siwsi does shifts sometimes.
"That's what Howard is supposed to do"
“Yes, behind the counter – she doesn’t mix cement and climb ladders – that’s what Howard’s supposed to do.”
"I'll have a word with him"
Mathew will have a word with him and make sure that he is at the shop more often,
"You may as well close down now"
but Ieuan insists, “If he’s not there all day, every day, you may as well close down now.”
He is accused of overreacting by Mathew, who is told, rather angrily, “You’re not the one letting customers down every day.”
"He'll have no choice but to stay at APD"
“Between you and me, things are going to change around here – so he’ll have no choice but to be at APD,” says Mathew,
"What's that all about, then?"
which Howard finds very puzzling.
"The place is too much of a strain, Mam"
Sioned is explaining to her mother, “The place is too much of a strain, Mam – I’m running from one place to another and I don’t have the time. I don’t have time for Math, or to be a mother – and I’m tired – more than I’ve ever been before.”
"Things will get better"
Eileen vaguely replies that things will get better, but Sioned wants things to get better now.
"We'll never get an offer like that again"
“It’s a shame that you didn’t realise this when Quantum Hydro Works wanted to buy – we’ll never get an offer like that again.”
"You sound as if you're in favour of selling"
Sioned is surprised that her mother sounds as if she is in favour of selling;
"Why don't I come up later?"
“I can see that you’re under strain and that we need to discuss this properly – why don’t I come up later?”
APD's phone goes unanswered . . .
The phone at APD is ringing,
. . . as Diane is otherwise occupied
but Diane ignores it as she is playing a game on her phone; “Number 41,” says a voice on her mobile.
"I thought you were looking after the place"
Ieuan has heard the phone ringing and comes in, but it stops just as he is about to pick it up. “I thought you were looking after this place,” he reprimands Diane, but she tells him that she is winning; just then the mobile announces that the game is over.
"I've lost now!"
“I’ve lost now!” she complains
She is playing 'Blinko Buzz'
and shows him the screen indicating the online bingo game.
"You'd get more sense out of a donkey"
Ieuan informs her that Matthew said he would sort things, “But good luck to him, talking to Howard – you’d get more sense out of a donkey.”
"You can go and see Anita before dinner"
Now Diane suggests that she will stay there to help; with the two of them, they can finish the work quicker, so that he can go and see Anita before dinner.
"That's very kind, Diane"
He is in favour of that idea, so she will stay behind the counter and he can go and sort the orders out round the back.
"No playing bingo at work, please"
As he goes, he warns Diane, “No playing bingo at work, please.”
"Can you get more dog food?"
Sioned is sweeping up in the farmyard when Howard asks her to get more dog food next time she goes shopping.
"You're overfeeding them!"
She angrily points out that she bought loads last week, accusing Howard of overfeeding them.
"She's the only one who listens to me"
“Only Chips, she’s the only one who listens to me, so she deserves the odd treat.” Sioned points out that she will be useless if she is ill, then apologises for snapping at him
"Come on – I'm not stupid"
He assumes that she has a lot on her mind; “Come on, I’m not stupid – you had your head in the clouds earlier and you changed the subject when I walked in the room.”
"You're imagining things"
Sioned maintains that he is imagining things, but he goes on to say that he heard Mathew and Griffiths talking; “They said things are going to change here.”
Eileen arrives
As her mother has just arrived, Sioned has the perfect excuse to change the subject,
"Especially if you want to leave this place"
but Eileen begins, as she walks towards them, “We have a lot to discuss, especially if you want to leave this place.”
"Leave?"
“Leave?
"What the hell's going to happen to me?"
“What the hell’s going to happen to me?” shouts Howard.
Eleri looks at the fridge contents
Eleri opens the door of the fridge to see the two quiches sitting inside; with a sigh, she closes the door again
"Please say we're having something with those quiches"
and remarks to Jinx, “Please say we’re having something with those quiches.”
"Change of plan"
He advises that there has been a change of plan; “Don’t say we’re having a greasy takeaway from across the road?” she groans.
"We're going out for a meal"
“No, we’re going out for a meal – I know you hate surprises, right, but tonight, Mademoiselle, I want to prove to you that I’m not only after one thing.
"Go and put on your best dress"
“So I want you to go home and I want you to put on your best dress, OK?
She likes the sound of this
“Go on, then.”
"But this is your legacy – and the children's"
At the kitchen table in Penrhewl, Eileen insists, “But this is your legacy, and Huwi-John’s and Jac’s and Lili’s as well. Perhaps some day one of you will want to come back here to farm.”
"You were persuading me to sell"
Sioned comments, “It wasn’t that long ago you were trying to persuade me to sell.”
"Things have changed since then"
Eileen stresses that things have changed since then – they will never get as good a price as Quantum Hydro Works offered.
"We don't know without trying"
“We don’t know that without trying,” says Sioned,
"There's a better option – renting"
but her mother suggests that there is a better option than selling – renting.
“You get to move from here, but the money still comes in.”
Ieuan taps on Anita's door . . .
Ieuan taps on Anita’s door in Brynawelon, but receives no reply, so he opens the door.
. . . then finds her sleeping
Inside, he finds Anita fast asleep;
He cannot waken her . . .
when he calls her name and touches her arm, she does not wake,
. . . so sits on the bed . . .
so he sits on the bed
. . . and looks concerned
and looks concerned.
At the brasserie
At the brasserie once more, Jinx and Eleri are sitting at the table; he comments that most of the food is based on cheese. However,
"I'll choose an aperitif first"
Eleri is not interested in then menu at the moment, but wants to choose an aperitif first.
"I didn't think you were drinking tonight"
“I didn’t think you were drinking tonight,” he reminds her,
"I can't come without trying their cocktails"
but she maintains that she cannot come to a place like this and not try the cocktails.
“Negroni or Campari Spritz?” she debates,
"Is that the red drink that tastes like medicine/"
while Jinx and enquires whether that is the red drink that tastes like medicine. She accuses him of having no taste,
"Although you did choose this place"
“Although you did choose this place so perhaps I’m wrong.”
"Was that supposed to be a compliment?"
He wonders if that was supposed to be a compliment. “You did choose it, didn’t you?” She queries, “Or did APD get vouchers for working on the place?”
"Why would I get vouchers from APD?"
He demands why he would get vouchers from APD and she reveals that she is only pulling his leg; “You’re so easy to wind up!
"It's one on the cute things about you"
“It’s one of the cute things about you.” He does not believe that he has ever heard her use the word ‘cute’ before.
“I’m showing my soppy side – and I haven’t even had a drink yet,” Eleri smiles.
Diane is addicted to that bingo . . .
In the Deri, Diane is still playing the bingo game on her phone, where she has apparently won a game
. . . and now she has won a game
and is looking very pleased with herself when Ieuan comes in.
"You're not playing that again?"
“Don’t tell me you’re playing bingo again, are you?” he sneers and she thinks that she is on a roll today.
"It's 'Blinko Buzz'"
She reveals that the name of the app is ‘Blinko Buzz’.
"I didn't like to wake her"
She asks how Anita is today and he is able to answer that, as she was sleeping when he went there and he did not like to wake her up. Diane advises that he should go over earlier next time.
"You need to put yourself and Anita first"
“You need to put yourself and Anita first, not someone else’s business.”
He offers her another drink, but she must get home,
"Before Dai reports me to the police"
“Before Dai reports me to the police for not making his dinner.” She is glad that she could help at APD today.
He goes over to the bar
Ieuan wanders over to the bar, takes out his phone
"Right, Blinko Buzz"
and mutters to himself, “Right, Blinko Buzz.”
Howard is leaning on the gate
Howard is looking over a farmyard gate when Sioned approaches.
"This isn't the way I wanted you to find out"
“This wasn’t the way I wanted you to find out – just so you know, we’re not selling, just renting.”
"I'm not important, am I?"
“It doesn’t matter, I’m not important, am I? I’m not one of the family.”
"We still care about you"
She makes it very clear that she and Mathew still care about him.
"You're welcome to stay with us"
“I know you’ve been hurt, but you’ve still got the job at APD – and if we find a house that’s big enough, you’re welcome to stay with us to start with.”
"You have a house here – a home"
“You have a house here – a home,” he insists
"But I'm not happy here"
but Sioned replies that she is not happy there. He cannot understand why;
"It's special to be out here in the countryside"
“It’s special to be out here in the countryside, working the land you know like the back of your hand.”
"I just want an easier life"
“I just want an easier life,” Sioned sighs, “I want to be able to go home at night, close the door and not have to worry about the lambing, stock, deliveries, the slurry pit – or whether it’s going to rain tomorrow.”
"Things like that keep me going"
“It’s things like that keep me going,” Howard tells her.
“Like it or not, sometimes things have to change,” she says,
She leaves Howard gazing across the fields
then walks away, leaving Howard looking across the fields.
"That was amazing"
They have finished their meal at the brasserie, which Eleri says was amazing; Jinx, however, remarks that blue cheese does nothing for him,
"Opposites attract"
so she maintains that opposites attract.
He has been sketching
Then he reveals what he has been doing; drawing a sketch of Eleri,
"That's amazing as well"
which she also describes as amazing, so he assumes that she is drunk.
"You've got so much talent"
“You’ve got so much talent – what are you doing singing in an old people’s home?” He reminds her that she offered him the job.
"If you could do anything . . ."
“If you could do anything in your life, what would you do?” she enquires.
"Live on a beach in Australia"
He maintains that he would like to live on a beach in Australia, but she really meant a job;
"Not a barman or builder"
he does not know that, only specifying not a barman or a builder.
"What about a full-time artist?"
“What about a full-time artist?”
"I would need my own gallery"
He says that he would need his own gallery to exhibit his masterpieces.
"I've really enjoyed tonight"
Eleri is about to leave and will be taking the sketch with her; she has really enjoyed tonight
"Sorry if `I'm not always nice to you"
and is sorry if she is not always nice to him.
“You’re making fun of me now,” he groans, but she emphasises that she is telling the truth.
She kisses him
She gets up and kisses him.
Howard does not think he can eat
Howard, sits down at the kitchen table as Sioned advises that dinner will not be long now. He does not think that he can eat and Mathew can understand that he is upset.
"I'm excited – I can rent Penrhewl!"
“I’m not upset – I’m excited I don’t know why I didn’t think of it sooner – I’ll rent Penrhewl!” exclaims Howard.
Eileen bursts out laughing
Eileen laughs at the very suggestion;
"I know what I'm doing"
he insists that he knows what he is doing, but is told by Eileen that there is more to farming than fencing.
"I want to rent Penrhewl to a family"
“I want to rent Penrhewl to a family – a young couple who want to start farming.”
"Don't I deserve a chance, then?"
“Don’t I deserve a chance, then?”
"You'll have to find a job somewhere else"
She is sorry but insists that he will have to find a job else somewhere else.
"After everything I've given to this place!"
“After everything I’ve given to this place! All the hours I’ve worked to keep the place going! Stuff you all!”
He storms out of the farmhouse . . .
He gets up and walks out of the house,
. . . much to Sioned's concern
much to Sioned’s concern.
