Last night's dinner
Next morning, Mathew and Sioned come downstairs, to find the remains of last night’s dinner still on the table, with some empty bottles.
"Look at this mess!"
“Look at this mess!” she shouts, then helps Mathew to the sofa. “He’s out, thank heavens!” she snarls
Mathew is pleased that at least Howard is at APD today.
"He's like a teenage boy!"
“Sorry, but this is like having a teenage boy who’s used to having Mami to do everything!” Sioned exclaims.
"I'm worried sick about APD"
“Do you have any idea what your mother is going to do with the farm?” Mathew asks her, “I’m worried sick about APD if Howard leaves.”
"We should support Howard"
Sioned has no idea about that, but insists that they should support Howard; “He’s worked hard here over the years and deserves a chance here.
"We will cope, all right?"
“Listen, I know you’re worried about APD – but we will cope, all right?”
"Urgh!"
Mathew finds what looks like a piece of pizza, stuffed down the end of the sofa and they both look disgusted.
That was a very short weekend
Eleri and Kyle are back from their extremely short weekend in London; they are carrying several bags. “Cwmderi’s like another planet after London,” Kyle observes,
"Are you happy to be back?"
“How do you feel? Happy to be back?”
She replies, “To be honest, no – in my head, I’ve started saying goodbye to the place.
"The end of something is always sad"
“But the end of something is always sad, isn’t it?”
“What about Garry?” he continues, “Are you going to say goodbye to him?”
"I have to get a replacement"
She points out that she works for him and will have to get a replacement for Brynawelon.
"I'm sure Garry can do that"
Kyle is sure that Garry can do that for himself. “I promise you that nothing sexual or romantic will happen between me and Garry.”
“What about any other business you may have?”
"There is no other business"
She stresses that apart from being Brynawelon’s manager, there is no other business; she is going to New York as his wife, and he cannot ask for more.
A text message arrives . . .
Then there is the sound of a text message on her phone; she looks at it and then walks out of the flat,
. . . and Kyle is suspicious
with Kyle looking suspicious.
Howard is loading the van
Howard is busy loading the APD van when Garry passes by;
"Do you have any work for me?"
“Do you have any work for me?” asks Howard,
"Of ever you want anything done"
“I know you own a few businesses – if ever you want anything done.” Garry does not have anything at the moment, but will keep him in mind. “Not just building work,” Howard points out, so Garry asks what other things he does. “Anything – I need money – I want to rent Penrhewl.”
"I hadn't heard she was getting rid of the place"
Garry had not heard that Eileen was getting rid of the place, but he is informed she is renting it out and Howard wants the chance to do that, more than he has wanted to do anything else in his life. “So, if you’ve got a job, anything, just give me a shout.”
"If anything comes up . . ."
Garry admires a bit of ambition and if anything comes up, he will let Howard know.
Cassie comes around the corner, carrying two box files; “Right, I’ve looked at these and I can help you read them,
"Do you know about the new farming rules?"
“but do you know about the new farming rules that have come in? Pollution and things?”
"Sioned does all that"
He replies that Sioned does that and, before her, Eileen. Cassie confesses that she is struggling with that, but there is a course which Howard can do.
His first thought is how much that will cost, so she encourages him to ask Eileen for more time.
"I can't let Eileen think I'm struggling"
“I can’t let her think I’m struggling – she has no faith in me as it is.”
"You have a lot to do in a short time"
Cassie suggests that he should start ‘sweet-talking’ Eileen, as he has lots of work to do in a short space of time.
"I've run out of cash"
Gwern comes into Maes-y-Deri, on the phone to Dani; he asks, “I’ve run out of cash at The Pizza Place – do you keep any here?” She tells him where he can find some,
"Right-hand drawer, OK"
so he opens the right hand drawer and finds what he is looking for. “Nice one – I’ve got it – I’ll pay you back tonight,” he says.
Something else catches his eye . . .
Then he notices something else in the drawer; an official envelope from the NHS.
. . . the reassembled letter
Looking inside, he finds the letter which was torn up by Garry and later reassembled on 20 May.
Visible from Cysgod y Glyn – not a good idea
Eleri walks up the back street by Cysgod y Glyn, where Garry is waiting for her; “You should have the documents by Thursday night,” he advises, which she considers is rather tight.
"How did it go in London?"
“Yes – but he’s the best – you won’t get stopped in passport control. How did it go in London?”
"I hate him – how do you think it went?"
Eleri snarls, “I hate him – how do you think it went? I also wanted to ask you . . . if Huw refuses to come with me, would you check up on him?”
Garry agrees that he will . . .
Garry agrees to that, then takes a small package from his pocket;
. . . and takes the phone from his pocket
“A phone – I’ve saved my number in it – if you ever need anything.”
"I don't know what to say"
She does not know what to say, except to thank him.
Garry walks away . . .
As he walks away,
. . . but someone has been watching
we can see that Kyle has been following her.
"You can't look at other people's mail"
When Dani returns to Maes-y-Deri, she finds Gwern looking at the letter and tells him, “You can’t look at other peoples mail!”
"I had a right to know"
He insists, “I had a right to know about this – didn’t you think it would help me? Knowing that Seren had saved a little girl’s life.”
"It was Seren's death that saved her
Dani is rather of the opinion that Seren’s death saved her,
"I don't understand . . . "
but he argues, “If Sarah had to go like that, I don’t understand . . .”
"Not everything's about you, Gwern!"
“Not everything’s about you, Gwern!” she shouts; he maintains that he would have liked to have read the letter.
"I haven't read it yet"
“I haven’t read it yet – neither has your Dad. Why would I want to know how part of Seren is keeping another child alive?”
"But the letter is still there"
Gwern points out that the letter is still there.
"This is one job I won't miss"
As she is dealing with the farm paperwork, Siôn declares, “This is one job I won’t miss – reports about our strategy to control pests.” Mathew comments that people think she leads a glamorous lifestyle and, at that moment, Dorian walks in.
"Is it OK if I have a shower?"
“Is it OK if I have a shower?”
"Do what you want"
Sioned tells him to do what he wants, but then he takes off his shirt and it is about to hand it to her, offering to take off the rest of his clothes.
"No, I don't want those!"
“No, I don’t want those!” she snaps. He remarks that Long John Silver is not going to do it.
"The washing machine is over there"
Mathew directs him to the washing machine, adding that the tumble dryer is out the back.
"Mags dries my clothes in front of the Aga"
Dorian complains, “Mags dries my clothes in front of the Aga,”
"What does that have to do with me?"
but Sioned cannot understand what that has to do with her.
"Well, you're the housewife"
“Well, you’re the housewife – that’s what you do on a farm.”
"I'm going to the village"
Sioned is furious and decides that she is going to the village;
"She's beautiful when she's angry"
Dorian comments, “She’s beautiful when she’s angry, isn’t she?”
Mathew glowers at him
When he sees Mathew’s furious look, he retreats, saying that he will go and have a shower.
"You never change, do you?"
Gwern goes to see Garry at the MFC flat; “You never change, do you?” so Garry wonders what he has done now. “That letter – just because you didn’t want to read it, you didn’t think I’d want to.”
"The transplant letter"
Garry realises that this is about the transplant letter; “Yeah, Dad, the letter saying how grateful these parents are after Seren saved their daughter’s life –
"Why didn't you want me to know that?"
“why didn’t you want to know that?
"It doesn't matter to me!"
Garry growls, “It doesn’t matter to me if Seren’s organs saved a classroom full of children – what’s it to me?"
“That one good thing came from her death?
"Isn't it some comfort?"
“Isn’t it some comfort that she gave life to another girl,” Gwern wonders. One of Seren’s heart valves . . .”
"What part of 'I don't care' don't you understand?"
Garry stops him there; “What part of ‘I don’t care’ don’t you understand?”
"It would help you – and Dani"
Gwern is convinced that his father does care, and thinks that if he was to read the letter it would just help him – and Dani, too.
“You always think you’re right, don’t you?
"This time, you're wrong"
“But this time, you’re wrong.
"I can't believe how tidy the street is . . ."
As he collects his order from Eileen, Howard is praising Siôn; “I’ve never seen anyone like him before – I can’t believe how tidy the street is –
". . . even outside MFC!"
“even outside MFC!”
Eileen regards it as a shame that he cannot help with cleaning up the litter as well;
"But being responsible for a farm . . ."
“But being responsible for a farm and learning the regulations as well as working in APD – I’m surprised you have time for sleep.”
"I want you to speak to Dorian . . ."
Just as he is leaving, Sioned comes in, wanting a word about Dorian; “I want you to speak to him. Has he been living in a cave?
". . . his attitude to women!"
“His attitude towards women – he thinks it’s my job to cook, clean and wash his dirty pants – just because I’m a woman!”
"Sounds like him"
“Sounds like him,” Howard groans, “But he’d listen to you or Mathew more than me, though.”
"Why do you let him bully you?"
“Why do you let him bully you?” she demands, “He’s always trying to make a fool of you.
"Show some backbone!"
“If you’re serious about running Penrhewl, show some backbone!”
Siôn was praising you the other night"
Mark has been cleaning the windows and then comes in for his lunch; “Siôn was praising you to the hilt the other night,” Eileen tells him, “Saying how hard you work but that you won’t take any praise.”
"That's not why I'm doing it"
He explains that is not what he is doing it; “I just want to improve things here,” but she goes on that hard work should be rewarded.
"I'll buy you a drink in the Deri . . ."
She is determined to do something about it and offers to buy him a drink in the Deri,
". . . I want to talk to you about something"
as she wants to talk to him about something.
"Gwern came to see me about the letter"
Now Garry has gone to Maes-y-Deri; “Gwern came to see me, about the letter. Sorry, Dan, I thought you read it and got rid of it.”
"Part of me wants to"
She confesses that she cannot to do either, although part of her wants to, but then . . .
"They're very selfish"
Garry regards that little girl’s parents as very selfish; “And now they want to feel better about it by wanting some blessing from us.”
"You may be right"
Dani says that he may be right.
"If you want to read it, I won't stop you"
“If you want to read it, I won’t stop you –
"I never want to know what it says"
“but, whatever it says, I never want to know – are we clear about that?
This box is locked . . .
Kyle is in the office at Brynawelon, where he finds that various boxes have been locked
. . . as is the filing cabinet . . .
and he cannot get into them.
. . . so he rifles through some files
He looks at files on the desk, then the door opens and Eleri comes in,
"What are you doing here?"
demanding, “What are you doing here?”
“I want to know how the interviews are going,” he replies. Again, she angrily demands why he is there;
"What was in that parcel?"
this time he snarls, “I saw you,” and she realises that he followed her. “What was in the parcel?”
"I haven't opened it yet"
Eleri maintains that she does not know, because she has not opened it yet. “Do you still love him?” She insists that she cannot just switch off her feelings.
"You were distant and preoccupied in London"
He noticed that she was distant and preoccupied in London,
"I'm trying"
but she protests that she is trying, so he instructs her to try harder
"Don't see Garry again!"
not to see Garry again. Then he leaves the office.
Dorian is playing darts
Dorian has been engaging in a game of darts at the Deri
"A classy event"
and elsewhere Eileen is proposing a classy event in the community.
| "Here, in the Deri?"| |
Mark imagines that it will be in the Deri.
"Tamed, of course"
“Classy, I said – in Tamed, of course! Seeing I’m Siôn’s partner, it’s only natural to hold it there. Because you’ve been such a support to him,
"I thought you'd like to help"
“I thought perhaps you would like to help.”
"I'm helping the community, not Siôn"
He makes it quite clear that he has been helping the community, not Siôn.
"I've invited the Western Post"
“And that’s what this event will do, bring the community together; I have invited the Western Post, to raise awareness of Siôn’s hard work.”
"And advertising for Tamed, too"
Mark is smiling and nodding his head; “And advertising for Tamed too,” he comments, but she maintains that she had not thought about that.
"I'm the 'First Lady' now"
She considers that perhaps she should, because, as she was told by a customer the other day, she is the ‘First Lady’ now.
Mark has gone right off his drink
Mark appears to have suddenly been put off his drink, as she drones on, “It feels so good to help this village, doesn’t it?
Howard comes in
Howard comes in and finds his cousin by the bar, who announces, “Here he is, the virgin!”
"Howard's description was perfect"
Cassie knew who he was directly he opened his mouth; Howard’s description was perfect.
How are Posh and Becks – the idiots at Penrhewl?"
“A younger version of George Clooney?” Dorian suggests, “How are Posh and Becks – those two idiots up in Penrhewl? They expect me to cook for myself and wash my own clothes.”
"What kind of world are we living in?"
With mock outrage, Cassie regards men cooking and washing clothes as ridiculous; “What kind of world are we living in?”
"You have to make more effort around the house"
Howard tells him that he has to make more effort around the house; “Sioned’s working and Mathew can’t do anything.” Dorian maintains that the tidiness of Penrhewl farm is all thanks to him.
Eileen hears Penrhewl mentioned
This is overheard by Eileen, who immediately comes across; “What did you say about Penrhewl?”
"Eileen, this is Dorian"
and is introduced to Dorian.
"I'd think you were Sioned's sister"
“Eileen – not Sioned’s mother? I see the similarities but I’d think you were Sioned’s sister.
"I admire the way you kept Penrhewl going"
“I admire the way you have been keeping Penrhewl going.”
Eileen acknowledges that Howard has been helping a lot, but Dorian goes on, “You’re a businesswoman – that’s what farming needs these days – a good head for business. I’m going to enjoy talking with you, Eileen.
"I'm going for a walk"
Eleri drinks a glass of wine and Kyle proposes going for a walk; “On your own?” she asks. He wonders whether she wants to come with him and introduce him to some of her friends.
"I may be late"
“I may be late,” he goes on, “You won’t have to make any excuses for not sleeping with me tonight.”
"You promised not to do anything"
She enquires as where he is going, so he imagines that she is worried about Garry; “No, because you promised not to do anything,” she reminds him
"I'm going for a bath"
and is now going for a bath.
Kyle delves in her handbag
Kyle goes straight to her handbag and takes out the keys to Brynawelon.
Garry is looking at photos of Seren . . .
Garry is looking at photographs of Seren on his phone, when a message from Eleri appears;
. . . when there is a warning from Eleri
‘Be careful – Kyle might be on his way over.’
Garry takes a drink . . .
Garry takes another sip of his drink
. . . and goes to look out of the window
and goes to look out of the window.
"You've changed your mind, then"
Gwern has been to get a pizza and discovers that Dani has changed her mind when he returns,
She is becoming emotional
as she is reading the letter.
"Are you OK, Dan?"
He wonders if she is OK, but she is not sure of that; “It’s just, hearing that they’re so happy makes me feel angry.
"It's so unfair"
“It’s so unfair.”
"Have I made things worse?"
Gwern is afraid that he has made things worse; she says that is not the case,
Then letter goes back into the drawer
but would know like him to put it away, please.
"Veggie Diavolo pizzas"
She is told that they have Veggie Diavolo pizzas, which she regards as lovely; “Go and get the plates,” she tells him.
Kyle is back at Brynawelon
Kyle is at Brynawelon, using his expertise, plus a little brute force,
In the box . . .
to gain access to the box;
. . . is obviously what he was looking for
he very quickly finds the document he is looking for and smiles broadly.
He photographs the three pages
He proceeds to photograph the three pages of the document with his phone,
Turning to the cabinet, he finds . . .
then, using the keys from Eleri’s bag, opens the small filing cabinet, where he finds in the top drawer the parcel given to her by Garry.
. . . the phone
He takes out the phone and looks at it,
then the sketch which Jinx made a few days ago, reaching the conclusion that he has been under a misapprehension.
. . . something which makes him exceedingly angry . . .
In a fury he flings everything across the room, sits down in the chair
'To the most beautiful woman in the world'
and studies the inscription under the sketch; ‘To the most beautiful woman in the world. 🩶 H Jenkins ’ 26’
