4 April 2023

Hywel is suffering from flashbacks . . .

In the hospital, Hywel’s condition is being monitored, and he is reliving the crash, when he told Tyler to turn off the phone and a split-second later, the collision occurred.

. . . and wakes up with a start

He sits up and looks around him with a dazed expression.

The accident is being covered on the radio

At Penrhewl a news report on the radio announces, “We’re receiving news of a fatal accident on the outskirts of Cwmderi in Carmarthenshire during the early hours of the morning.   It was a collision between a car and a minibus, carrying guests from a local wedding.   The police say that the accident has led to more than one death and that many others are in hospital, with some in a serious condition.”

Sioned is in need of a cwtch

Sioned comes into the room and DJ gives her a hug.

Iolo is also listening . . .
Iolo is also listening to the radio, as the report continues, “Also in Cwmderi, a man’s body was found in the Monk’s Motors garage – the police say that the circumstances are suspicious, and they are appealing for the public to come forward with any information that might help the investigation.”

. . . while Greta eats her breakfast

Meanwhile Greta is eating her breakfast and Iolo is in tears, as the bulletin continues that one man has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Iolo turns off the radio . . .

Iolo turns off the radio

. . . and looks at Greta . . .

and looks down at Greta,

. . . who is unaware of what has happened

who is blissfully ignorant of the gravity of the situation.

Dani is waiting

Dani is in the hospital waiting room when DI Fielding comes in,

"The doctor said you were here"

having been told by the doctor that she was there.

"I wanted to make sure you're OK"

“I was on my way to the station and I wanted to make sure you’re OK,” she says.

"Garry should be with Gwern"

“What have you done with Garry?   He should be with Gwern,” Dani protests,

There is no reply

but the DI does not say anything.

Britt has been brought home – alone

A car pulls up outside the Deri and Britt alights, significantly, alone, and carrying a white bag;

She heads to number 21 . . .

she makes her slow way to number 21

. . . and is about to open the door

and is about to open the door when Siôn appears and does it for her.

"Dani hasn't replied"

She is not sure how Gwern is, as Dani has not replied

"Do you want me to come in?"

and she refuses Siôn’s offer to go in with her.

"Iolo will need you"

She thanks him but recommends that he should go home, as Iolo will need him.

Dani is in a state of desperation

Dani is in a state of desperation;  “I know it's difficult,” says the DI,

"We're not in a position to release Garry"

“But we’re not in a position to release Garry.”   Dani cannot understand why he was arrested in the first place.

“I can’t reveal too much, but as you’re both parents to Gabriel . . .” the DI begins, and Dani wonders what this has got to do with Gabriel.

"We suspect it was Dylan's body in the garage"

“I’m sorry to tell you, but we suspect it was Dylan’s body in the garage.”

Dani will not accept this;  “No, because if he was back in the village, he would have told me,” she insists,

"He would have wanted to see Gabriel"

“He would have wanted to see Gabriel.”   She is told that the police are still building a better understanding of what happened,

"We're treating the case as murder"

but they are treating the case as murder.   Dani is horrified.

Gaynor is by Hywel's bedside

Gaynor is now sitting beside Hywel’s hospital bed

He realises someone is there

and he gradually becomes aware that someone is there and looks round.

"Who looks worse – you or me?"

“Well, who looks worse – you or me?” she asks.   Hywel is concerned about Esther,

"She's with Kath"

but is reassured that she is with Kath.

“The car came from nowhere – how is everybody else?” he demands,

"Don't worry about that now"

and Gaynor tells him not to worry about that now.   He insists that he has to know;

Gaynor, tell me, please!"

“Gaynor, tell me, please!”

"Mr Llywelyn?"

At that moment a police officer comes in and wants to speak to Mr Llywelyn.

Dai surreptitiously reaches for a piece of cake . . .

At Bryntirion, Dai reaches for one of the pieces of leftover wedding cake, but is reprimanded by Diane;

. . . but Diane is watching him

“What are you doing?   Remember the diet!”

"A bit of marzipan won't make much difference"

He does not think that a bit of marzipan would make much difference, and in any case it is full of nuts and lots of vitamin B.   She points out that it is full of sugar and fat.

Ieuan Griffiths comes hurrying in through the back door,

"Didn't your mother teach you to knock?"

and Dai moans, “Crikey Moses!   Didn’t your mother teach you to knock?”

"Anita and I should be together at a time like this"

Ieuan thought that he and Anita should be together at a time like this.

"Why are you on your own, then?"

Dai quite logically enquires, “Why are you on your own, then?” and is told that Anita has taken Amanda to the station.

"We haven't phoned them"

Diane invites Ieuan to sit down and he advises that they have not phoned the newlyweds, as Anita did not want to ruin their honeymoon.   Diane is concerned that someone is bound to mention it on social media.

😢"Nothing conveys true grief like a couple of emojis!"😢

“Yeah,” mutters Ieuan, “Nothing conveys true grief like a couple of emojis!”

"Yes, I'll phone them now"

“It might be better coming from us – yes, I’ll phone them now,” Diane decides.

"Tell them that the 'whatsits' are all right"

“Yes, and you can tell them that the ‘whatsits’ are all right – the couple on the bus – friends of Kelly’s family in Merthyr,” Ieuan says,

"Oh, you mean Susan and Peter"

and she realises that he means Susan and Peter.

"Kelly will be out on the Piña Coladas to celebrate!"

“That makes a world of difference!” exclaims Dai, “Kelly will be out on the Piña Coladas to celebrate!”

"I'm only trying to help!"

Ieuan insists that he is trying to help and that it is important to say something positive.

"I'll go upstairs and do it now"

Diane will go upstairs to make the phone call.

Ieuan fancies some cake

Meanwhile, Ieuan looks hungrily at the wedding cake,

"Someone might as well have some pleasure here!"

and Dai growls, “Yeah, go on then – someone might as well have some pleasure here!”

But when Ieuan is about to cut a good-sized piece . . .

but when Ieuan picks up the knife to cut himself a chunk,

. . . Dai's scowl make him change his mind

Dai makes it clear that he should just have a small piece which has been already cut.

"We really can't sail today . . ."

At Penrhewl, DJ is on the phone explaining that they really cannot sail today;  “Yes, I know what I said, but we really can’t –

"My mother-in-law has been in an accident"

“my mother-in-law has been in an accident.   Right, well, I’ll have to let you know.”

"I'll take Huwi with me, then"

Sioned, who is in tears, suggests that they have to check the stock, but she will not go with him.   He will take Huwi, to give him a bit of fresh air,

"He has no idea, poor dab"

and Sioned sobs, “He has no idea, poor dab, and I didn’t say goodbye when we left.”

"She'll be fine – you'll see"

reassures her that her mother is not going anywhere and is in the best hands;  there is nothing they can do until she comes out of theatre.   “She’ll be fine – you’ll see.”

"I can't lose her, DJ – I can't!"

“And what if she’s not?” Sioned demands, “I can’t lose her, DJ – I can’t!”

Garry awaits interrogation

At the police station, Garry is joined in the interview room by DI Fielding and a solicitor;  “How is he?” Garry asks,

"We don't have any more information"

and is told that unfortunately they do not have any more information at the moment.

"You have no right to keep me here . . ."

“You have no right to keep me here when my son . . .” Garry begins, but it is pointed out that he is receiving the best possible care.

He appeals to his solicitor

He urges his solicitor to do something,

"You are under suspicion of murder!"

but is reminded by the DI, “You are here under suspicion of murder.”

"Gwyneth getting away with everything again!"

“Yeah, while Gwyneth is getting away with everything again!” he snarls.

"Miss Jones died a few hours ago"

The DI informs him that Miss Jones died a few hours ago of her injuries.

"Does Gwern know?"

“Does Gwern know?” he immediately asks, and the DI appreciates that this is a very serious and difficult situation, and that is why they are there to get the truth and justice.

"If you have nothing to hide . . ."

“If you have nothing to hide, everything will be over as quickly as possible and we’ll get you straight back to your son.

Cassie solemnly walks towards  . . .

Cassie walks slowly

. . . number 9 with her flowers . . .

towards the police tape surrounding number 9

. . . and places them on the pavement

and places a bunch of flowers on the ground nearby;  as she muses on what has happened,

"Do you really think she deserves your tears?"

Britt is approaching.   “Do you really think she deserves your tears?” Britt snarls.

"She was a mother and a friend"

“Whatever happened, she was a mother and a friend,” Cassie replies.

"My family is going through hell because of her"

Britt forcibly points out that the family is going through hell because of Gwyneth;  “She’s still at it now – even though she’s dead!”   Cassie was merely coming there to pay tribute and did not mean to upset anyone.

“What did you expect, Cas?   Flowers – no – that’s sick!” Britt shouts,

Britt tears the bunch of flowers to pieces

picking up the flowers and doing her best to shred them;

"Grieve for someone who deserves it!"

“If you really want to grieve – grieve for someone who deserves it!” and she walks away.

Britt goes into number 21 . . .

Britt goes into number 21

. . . and picks up Colin's jacket

and picks up Colin’s leather jacket;

This is looking ominous

she sits down in tears and holds it close to her.

Dai is removing the temptation

Dai is picking up the remains of the wedding cake and putting it into a plastic container when Diane comes back downstairs;

"Kelly want to fly home straightaway"

“Kelly wanted to get a flight home straightaway,” she says, and Dai imagines that the news would put a dampener on the all-inclusive buffet.   “But I persuaded them to stay,” she continues, “There’s nothing they can do here.”

"Spain feels a long way away"

Ieuan remarks that Spain feels a long way away today,

"You just want to hold them tight"

and Diane sighs, “When something like this happens, you just want to hold them tight, no matter how old they are.”

"They will look after each other"

Dai reminds her that they are out there together and will look after each other.

The policeman has gone already

Gaynor comes back into the ward after the policeman has gone, and remarks that he was not there very long;  she is sure that it was simply a formality.

"You should be able to come home tomorrow"

She has spoken to the doctor, who confirms that Hywel should be able to come home tomorrow.   “Listen, if you’re worried about that alcohol test, don’t be – you couldn’t possibly be over the limit.”

"Yesterday was supposed to be happy . . ."

He does not look so sure about that, and says, “Yesterday was supposed to be happy – one second everyone was singing – and the next . . .”

"You said she came from nowhere"

Gaynor reminds him that he said that Gwyneth came from nowhere and there was nothing he could have done;  the police are not blaming him.

"I didn't say anything about the phone"

“You don’t understand – I didn’t say anything about the phone,” he replies,

"What do you mean?"

and she looks blankly at him;

"You phoned me – I wasn't concentrating!"

“You phoned me from the hotel – I wasn’t concentrating.   It was a second, but it was enough.   No, the accident was my fault!”

Gaynor is horrified

Gaynor looks horrified by this.

Sioned is looking at her phone

At Penrhewl, Sioned is sitting at the table, looking at her phone when DJ comes back in;  “I was quick because I had a helper,” he says,

"I told him she was out, selling cakes"

“But he was asking about his mother – and I told him she was out, selling cakes.   How about going for a walk?”

"Then hospital might phone"

Sioned wants to stay there in case the hospital phones, and the signal is bad out in the fields;  “Perhaps I should phone them.”   DJ reminds her that Eileen will be in theatre for a while and it is better is to stay busy.

He tries to persuade her with a load of manure (?)

“We’ve got a lot of manure that needs to be shifted – I can see you that you’re tempted,” he jokes,

"No – I'm staying here"

but she is adamant that she is staying there.

Gary cannot see any way out

In the interview room, DI Fielding remarks that the building is in Garry’s name;

"The body was found in your your garage"

“And Mr Ellis’ body was found in the pit in your garage.”   Garry argues that it does not mean he put him there.

“You’ve never seen eye to eye with him, have you?” the DI continues.

"I don't kill people I don't like"

Garry concedes that they were never ‘friends’, “But I don’t kill people I don’t like, either,” he adds.

“So you say the first time you saw Mr Ellis in the garage, he was dead?” is the next question.   Garry confirms this.

"What was the last time you were in the garage before then?"

“And when was the last time you were in the garage before that?”   Garry maintains that he has not been in there for a few months.

"Can you explain the stolen goods in there?"

The DI wonders how he can explain that a number of stolen goods, reported a few weeks ago, were found in the garage.

"And you think I'm responsible"

“And you think I’m responsible for these now?” he demands.

The DI has video evidence

She shows him CCTV footage that explains that they have been working with Northumbria Police for weeks;  “And we know everything about your little operation.”

"That looks like Tyler Davies-White . . ."

Garry looks closely at the video and remarks, “It looks to me like it’s Tyler Davies-White in that footage –

". . . perhaps you should be talking to him"

“perhaps you should be talking to him, not me.”

The DI does not reply

The DI looks across at her colleague, but says nothing.

"Can you stay a little longer?"

Up in the Deri flat, Cassie has been minding the children, and Dani asks if she can stay a little longer.

"You'd be doing me a favour"

“I can’t go home anyway – so you’d be doing me a favour,” Cassie answers, “Are you going back to see Gwern?”

"They're carrying out tests and stuff"

Dani says that they have sent her home, “While they carry out tests and stuff.”   Dani is going to show some sympathy, as Iolo is now family;

"Life is cruel, isn't it?"

as she is about to go out of the door, she comments, “Life is cruel, isn’t it?”

DJ is back

Sioned is doing some washing up when DJ comes back in;

"Mam always says cooking is the answer to everything"

she remarks, “Mam always says that cooking is the answer to everything – but I haven’t decided what it’s going to be yet.”

"It's the hospital, DJ!"

Her phone sounds, but when she sees it is the hospital she is too nervous to answer it, and wants him to do so.

"Hello"

Unfortunately we do not hear the conversation.

"The messages confirm everything"

DI Fielding points out, “The messages between you and Mr Davis-White confirm everything.”

"There's no escaping this time"

Garry looks a broken man as she goes on, “You’ve been very hard to catch over the years, Mr Monk – but there’s no escaping this time.   You can’t blame anyone else, because there’s no-one else left.

"It doesn't have to be for ever . . ."

“Your days in the Cwm may be over – but it doesn’t have to be for ever.

". . . I'm sure the court would offer leniency . . ."

“I’m sure the court would appreciate honesty and offer leniency if you gave us the whole truth.

". . . and your son would be happy to have you home"

“And I’m sure your son would be happy to have you home as soon as possible – wouldn’t he?”

"OK – the whole truth – but one condition"

After a few seconds’ thought, Garry agrees her terms;  “OK, I’ll tell you everything – Dylan, Gwyneth – the whole truth – but there is one condition.”

The DI waits with bated breath

We are not permitted to hear what that condition is.

Iolo lies on the sofa

As Iolo lies on the sofa at Y Felin, there is a knock at the door,

"Dad – Dad!"

and he nervously calls to his father to answer it.   Siôn is in the kitchen and opens the door

The visitor is Dani . . .

to find that it is Dani.

. . . who embraces Iolo

She and Iolo embrace each other in floods of tears;

"You know what?   He never stopped loving you "

“I’m so angry with him for dying!” she growls, “You know what?   He never stopped loving you.

The camera lingers on a photo on the bookcase

The camera moves to a photo of Iolo and Tyler with baby Greta on the bookcase.
